We fabricated a reflectance based sensor which relies on the diffraction pattern generated from a bio-microarray where an underlying thin film structure enhances the diffracted intensity from molecular layers. The zero order diffraction represents the background signal and the higher orders represent the phase difference between the array elements and the background. By taking the differential ratio of the first and zero order diffraction signals we get a quantitative measure of molecular binding while simultaneously rejecting common mode fluctuations. We improved the signal-to-noise ratio by an order of magnitude with this ratiometric approach compared to conventional single channel detection. In addition, we use a lithography based approach for fabricating microarrays which results in spot sizes as small as 5 micron diameter unlike the 100 micron spots from inkjet printing and is therefore capable of a high degree of multiplexing. We will describe the real-time measurement of adsorption of charged polymers and bulk refractometry using this technique. The lack of moving parts for point scanning of the microarray and the differential ratiometric measurements using diffracted orders from the same probe beam allows us to make real-time measurements in spite of noise arising from thermal or mechanical fluctuations in the fluid sample above the sensor surface. Further, the lack of moving parts leads to considerable simplification in the readout hardware permitting the use of this technique in compact point of care sensors.

The present work proposes a new sensing methodology, which uses Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) to measure in vivo the surface strain and strain rate on calf muscles while performing certain exercises. Two simple exercises, namely ankle dorsi-flexion and ankle plantar-flexion, have been considered and the strain induced on the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle while performing these exercises has been monitored. The real time strain generated has been recorded and the results are compared with those obtained using a commercial Color Doppler Ultrasound (CDU) system. It is found that the proposed sensing methodology is promising for surface strain measurements in biomechanical applications.

Anatase Ag-TiO2 microwires with high sensitivity and photocatalytic activity were synthesized via polyol synthesis route followed by a simple surface modification and chemical reduction approach for attachment of silver. The superior performance of the Ag-TiO2 composite microwires is attributed to improved surface reactivity, mass transport and catalytic property as a result of wiring the TiO2 surface with Ag nanoparticles. Compared to the TiO2 microwires, Ag-TiO2 microwires exhibited three times higher sensitivity in the detection of cationic dye such as methylene blue. Photocatalytic degradation efficiency was also found to be significantly enhanced at constant illumination protocols and observation times. The improved performance is attributed to the formation of a Schottky barrier between TiO2 and Ag nanoparticles leading to a fast transport of photogenerated electrons to the Ag nanoparticles.

Glaciers are natural reservoirs of fresh water in frozen state and sensitive indicators of climate change. Among all the mountainous glaciated regions, glaciers of Himalayas form one of the largest concentrations of ice outside the Polar Regions. Almost all the major rivers of northern India originate from these glaciers and sustain perennial flow. Therefore, in view of the importance and role of the glaciers in sustaining the life on the Earth, monitoring the health of glaciers is necessary. Glacier's health is monitored in two ways (i) by mapping the change in extent of glaciers (ii) by finding variation in the annual mass balance. This paper has been discussed the later approach for monitoring the health of glaciers of Warwan and Bhut basins. Mass balance of glaciers of these two basins was determined based on the extraction of snow line at the end of ablation season. A series of satellite images of AWiFS sensor were analysed for extraction of snowline on the glaciers for the period of 2005, 2006 and 2007. The snow line at the end of ablation season is used to compute accumulation area ratio (AAR = Accumulation area/Glacier area) for each glacier of basins. An approach based on relationship of AAR to specific mass balance (computed in field) for glaciers of Basapa basin was employed in the present study. Mean of specific mass balance of individual glacier for the year 2005, 2006 and 2007 of Warwan basin was found to be -ve 0.19 m, -ve 0.27 m and -ve 0.2 m respectively. It is 0.05 m, -ve 0.11 m and -ve 0.19 m for Bhut basin. The analysis suggests a loss of 4.3 and 0.83 kmA(3) of glacier in the monitoring period of 3 years for Warwan and Bhut basins respectively. The overall results suggest that the glaciers of Warwan basin and Bhut basins have suffered more loss of ice than gain in the monitoring period of 3 years.

A new bis-indolyl-based colorimetric probe has been synthesized. This allows a Michael-type adduct formation for the detection of cyanide ions. The probe shows a remarkable color change from red to colorless upon addition of the cyanide ions in pure water. The cyanide ion reacts with the probe and removes the conjugation of the bis-indolyl moiety of the probe with that of the 4-substituted aromatic ring. This renders the probe colorless. The mechanism of the reaction of the probe with the cyanide ion was established by using 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and kinetic studies.

We present a method for differential ratiometric measurement of reflectance change due to molecular adsorption using a diffractive microstructure fabricated on a reflectance contrast enhancing substrate for bulk refractometry and surface molecular binding detection applications. The differential method suppresses signal fluctuations due to thermal or concentration gradients in the sample flow cell by more than 40x and enables the real-time measurement of molecular interactions on the surface with a noise floor of about 70 pm. In a communication system in which K nodes communicate with a central sink node, the following problem of selection often occurs. Each node maintains a preference number called a metric, which is not known to other nodes. The sink node must find the `best' node with the largest metric. The local nature of the metrics requires the selection process to be distributed. Further, the selection needs to be fast in order to increase the fraction of time available for data transmission using the selected node and to handle time-varying environments. While several selection schemes have been proposed in the literature, each has its own shortcomings. We propose a novel, distributed selection scheme that generalizes the best features of the timer scheme, which requires minimal feedback but does not guarantee successful selection, and the splitting scheme, which requires more feedback but guarantees successful selection. The proposed scheme introduces several new ideas into the design of the timer and splitting schemes. It explicitly accounts for feedback overheads and guarantees selection of the best node. We analyze and optimize the performance of the scheme and show that it is scalable, reliable, and fast. We also present new insights about the optimal timer scheme.

We report on the novel flow sensing application of piezoelectric ZnO thin film deposited on Phynox alloy sensing element. Characterization of piezoelectric ZnO films deposited on Phynox (Elgiloy) substrate at different RF powers is discussed. ZnO films deposited at RF power of 100W were found to have fine c-axis orientation, possesses excellent surface morphology with lower rms surface roughness of 1.87 nm and maximum d(31) coefficient value 4.7 pm V-1. The thin cantilever strip of Phynox alloy with ZnO film as a sensing layer for flow sensing has been tested for flow rates ranging from 2 to 18 L min(-1). A detailed theoretical analysis of the experimental set-up showing the relationship between output voltage and force at a particular flow rate has been discussed. The sensitivity of now sensing element is similar to 18 mV/(L min(-1)) and typical response time is of the order of 20 m s. The sensing element is calibrated using in-house developed testing set-up. 2 + 4] self-assembly of a pyrene-functionalized Pt-8(II) tetragonal prism (2) is achieved using a newly designed star-shaped organometallic acceptor (1) in combination with an amide-based ``clip'' donor (L). The propensity of this prism (2) as a selective sensor for nitroaromatics (2,4-dinitrotoluene, 1,3,5-trinitrotoluene, and picric acid), which are the chemical constituents of many commercial explosives, has been examined.

Clock synchronisation is an important requirement for various applications in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Most of the existing clock synchronisation protocols for WSNs use some hierarchical structure that introduces an extra overhead due to the dynamic nature of WSNs. Besides, it is difficult to integrate these clock synchronisation protocols with sleep scheduling scheme, which is a major technique to conserve energy. In this paper, we propose a fully distributed peer-to-peer based clock synchronisation protocol, named Distributed Clock Synchronisation Protocol (DCSP), using a novel technique of pullback for complete sensor networks. The pullback technique ensures that synchronisation phases of any pair of clocks always overlap. We have derived an exact expression for a bound on maximum synchronisation error in the DCSP protocol, and simulation study verifies that it is indeed less than the computed upper bound. Experimental study using a few TelosB motes also verifies that the pullback occurs as predicted.

ADVANCED MULTIFUNCTIONAL INORGANIC NANOSTRUCTURED OXIDES FOR CONTROLLED RELEASE AND SENSING. We demonstrate here certain examples of multifunctional nanostructured oxidematerials for biotechnological and environmental applications.Various in-house synthesized homogeneous nanostructured viz.mesoporous and nanotubes silica and titania have been employed for controlled drug delivery and electrochemical biosensing applications. Confinement of macromolecules such as proteins studied via electrochemical, thermal and spectroscopic methods showed no detrimental effect on native protein structure and function, thus suggesting effective utility of oxide nanostructures as bio-encapsulators. Multi-functionalitywas demonstrated via employing similar nanostructures for sensing organic water pollutants e.g. textile dyes.

A simple thermal evaporation method is presented for the growth of crystalline SnO2 nanowires at a low substrate temperature of 450 degrees C via an gold-assisted vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. The as-grown nanowires were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, and were also tested for methanol vapor sensing. Transmission electron microscopy studies revealed the single-crystalline nature of the each nanowire. The fabricated sensor shows good response to methanol vapor at an operating temperature of 450 degrees C. (C) 2012 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Coordination self-assembly of a series of tetranuclear Pt(II) macrocycles containing an organometallic backbone incorporating ethynyl functionality is presented. The 1 : 1 combination of a linear acceptor 1,4-bistrans-Pt(PEt3)(2)(NO3)(ethynyl)]benzene (1) with three different dipyridyl donor `clips' (L-a-L-c) afforded three 2 + 2] self-assembled Pt-4(II) macrocycles (2a-2c) in quantitative yields, respectively L-a = 1,3-bis-(3-pyridyl)isothalamide; L-b = 1,3-bis(3-pyridyl)ethynylbenzene; L-c = 1,8-bis(4-pyridyl)ethynylanthracene]. These macrocycles were characterized by multinuclear NMR (H-1 and P-31); ESI-MS spectroscopy and the molecular structures of 2a and 2b were established by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. These macrocycles (2a-2c) are fluorescent in nature. The amide functionalized macrocycle 2a is used as a receptor to check the binding affinity of aliphatic acyclic dicarboxylic acids. Such binding affinity is examined using fluorescence and UV-Vis spectroscopic methods. A solution state fluorescence study showed that macrocycle 2a selectively binds (K-SV = 1.4 x 10(4) M-1) maleic acid by subsequent enhancement in emission intensity. Other aliphatic dicarboxylic acids such as fumaric, succinic, adipic, mesaconic and itaconic acids caused no change in the emission spectra; thereby demonstrating its potential use as a macrocyclic receptor in distinction of maleic acid from other aliphatic dicarboxylic acids.

We consider the wireless two-way relay channel, in which two-way data transfer takes place between the end nodes with the help of a relay. For the Denoise-And-Forward (DNF) protocol, it was shown by Koike-Akino et al. that adaptively changing the network coding map used at the relay greatly reduces the impact of Multiple Access Interference at the relay. The harmful effect of the deep channel fade conditions can be effectively mitigated by proper choice of these network coding maps at the relay. Alternatively, in this paper we propose a Distributed Space Time Coding (DSTC) scheme, which effectively removes most of the deep fade channel conditions at the transmitting nodes itself without any CSIT and without any need to adaptively change the network coding map used at the relay. It is shown that the deep fades occur when the channel fade coefficient vector falls in a finite number of vector subspaces of, which are referred to as the singular fade subspaces. DSTC design criterion referred to as the singularity minimization criterion under which the number of such vector subspaces are minimized is obtained. Also, a criterion to maximize the coding gain of the DSTC is obtained. Explicit low decoding complexity DSTC designs which satisfy the singularity minimization criterion and maximize the coding gain for QAM and PSK signal sets are provided. Simulation results show that at high Signal to Noise Ratio, the DSTC scheme provides large gains when compared to the conventional Exclusive OR network code and performs better than the adaptive network coding scheme.

Regenerating codes are a class of codes for distributed storage networks that provide reliability and availability of data, and also perform efficient node repair. Another important aspect of a distributed storage network is its security. In this paper, we consider a threat model where an eavesdropper may gain access to the data stored in a subset of the storage nodes, and possibly also, to the data downloaded during repair of some nodes. We provide explicit constructions of regenerating codes that achieve information-theoretic secrecy capacity in this setting.
