We have constructed a space-filling (Corey-Pauling-Koltun) model of an alternative structure for DNA. This structure is not a double helix, but consists of a pair of polynucleotide strands lying side by side and held together by Watson-Crick base pairing. Each of the two strands has alternating right- and left-handed helical segments approximately five base pairs in length. Sugar residues in alternating segments along a strand point in opposite directions. A structure slightly different from the present one proposed earlier by ourselves and another group and in which sugars in a strand all point in the same direction is ruled out. The present structure yields natural solutions to the problems of supercoiling of DNA and of strand separation during DNA replication. This model is energetically more favorable than the double helix.

Photophysics and photochemistry of cyclobutanethiones 1-5 have been studied with the view to generalize the a-cleavage reactions of cyclobutanethiones. The above cyclobutanethiones possess a unit intersystem crossing efficiency from S1 to T1, a high self-quenching rate (-4 X lo9 M-' s-'), and a short triplet lifetime (<0.50 ws). Photolysis of 1-5 yields in benzene a product resulting from 1,3-transposition and in methanol two cyclic thioacetals. The origin of these products is traced to the triplet excited state. A mechanistic scheme involving a-cleavage as the primary photoprocess and diradicals and thiacarbenes as intermediates has been formulated to rationalize the formation of thioacetals and rearranged products. The proposed mechanistic scheme is supported by UHF MIND013 calculations performed on four model systems, cyclobutanethiones and 1,3-cyclobutanedithiones 18-21. These calculations indicate that formation of diradical is favored thermodynamically and kinetically for systems analogous to 19 and 21, while rearrangement to thiacarbene is likely only for those similar to 21.

The titled reagent incorporates an oxygen-centred nucleophile and a basic moietyin a suitably mutual orientationin the same molecule. It oxidises various primary benzylic bromides to the corresponding aromatic aldehydes under relatively mild conditions (MeCN/rt50°C/624 h) in high yields (8397%), and is thus a useful alternative to the Kornblum procedure.

This paper presents a genetic algorithm (GA) model for obtaining an optimal operating policy and optimal crop water allocations from an irrigation reservoir. The objective is to maximize the sum of the relative yields from all crops in the irrigated area. The model takes into account reservoir inflow, rainfall on the irrigated area, intraseasonal competition for water among multiple crops, the soil moisture dynamics in each cropped area, the heterogeneous nature of soils. and crop response to the level of irrigation applied. The model is applied to the Malaprabha single-purpose irrigation reservoir in Karnataka State, India. The optimal operating policy obtained using the GA is similar to that obtained by linear programming. This model can be used for optimal utilization of the available water resources of any reservoir system to obtain maximum benefits.

A new case of the uncommon cis-trans enantiomerism is presented. The titled anhydride adducts were prepared in good yields by the known reaction of three 6-arylfulvenes with maleic anhydride (aryl = phenyl, p-tolyl and p-anisyl). The exo adducts were converted to the corresponding imides by reaction with (1S)-1-(naphth-1-yl)ethylamine in similar to 80% yields, and the resulting diastereomeric imides separated by silica gel column chromatography. They were hydrolysed and recyclised to the chiral anhydrides, in `one-pot' with 10% NaOH-EtOH, followed by treatment with 2 M HCl, in similar to 40% yields. The titled anhydrides were thus obtained in homochiral form, in enantiomeric purities (generally) of similar to 90% as indicated by chiral HPLC. The chiral anhydrides were also converted to the corresponding imides (presumably stereospecifically), by treatment with ammonia solution in excellent yields. The crystal structure of one of the above diastereomeric imides (derived from 6-phenylfulvene) was determined, and based on the known (S)-configuration of the naphthylethylamine moiety, the `configurations' of the original anhydride adducts were assigned. A new theoretical equation for interaction parameter in multicomponent metallic solutions is developed using the pseudopotential formalism coupled with the free energy of the hard sphere system. The approximate expression for the pseudopotential term is given in terms of the heat of solution at infinite dilution, to allow easy evaluation of the interaction parameter in various multicomponent systems. This theory has been applied to 23 non-ferrous alloys based on Pb, Sn, Bi and indium. Comparison with the results of previous theoretical calculations using only the hard sphere model suggests that the inclusion of the pseudopotential term yields a quantitatively more correct prediction of interaction parameters in multicomponent metallic solutions. Numerical calculations were also made for 320 Fe-base solutions relevant to steelmaking and the agreement between calculation and experimental data appears reasonable, with 90% reliability in predicting the correct sign.

The temperature (T) and electric field-to-gas pressure (E/P) dependences of the rate coefficientk for the reaction SF 6 +SOF4rarrSOF 5 +SF5 have been measured. ForT<270>k approaches a constant of 2.1×109 cm3/s, and for 433>T>270 K,k decreases withT according tok (cm3/s)=0.124 exp [3.3 lnT(K)]. ForE/Pk has a constant value of about 2.5×1010 cm3/s, and for 130 V/cm·torr>E/P>60 V/cm·torr, the rate is approximately given byk (cm3/s)sim7.0×1010 exp (0.022E/P). The measured rate coefficient is used to estimate the influence of this reaction on SOF4 production from negative, point-plane, glow-type corona discharges in gas mixtures containing SF6 and at least trace amounts of O2 and H2O. A chemical kinetics model of the ion-drift region in the discharge gap is used to fit experimental data on SOF4 yields assuming that the SF 6 +SOF4 reaction is the predominant SOF4 loss mechanism. It is found that the contribution of this reaction to SOF4 destruction falls considerably below the estimated maximum effect assuming that SF 6 is the predominant charge carrier which reacts only with SOF4. The results of this analysis suggest that SF 6 is efficiently deactivated by other reactions, and the influence of SF 6 +SOF4 on SOF4 production is not necessarily more significant than that of other slower secondary processes such as gas-phase hydrolysis

Hardware constraints, which motivate receive antenna selection, also require that various antenna elements at the receiver be sounded sequentially to obtain estimates required for selecting the `best' antenna and for coherently demodulating data thereafter. Consequently, the channel state information at different antennas is outdated by different amounts and corrupted by noise. We show that, for this reason, simply selecting the antenna with the highest estimated channel gain is not optimum. Rather, a preferable strategy is to linearly weight the channel estimates of different antennas differently, depending on the training scheme. We derive closed-form expressions for the symbol error probability (SEP) of AS for MPSK and MQAM in time-varying Rayleigh fading channels for arbitrary selection weights, and validate them with simulations. We then characterize explicitly the optimal selection weights that minimize the SEP. We also consider packet reception, in which multiple symbols of a packet are received by the same antenna. New suboptimal, but computationally efficient weighted selection schemes are proposed for reducing the packet error rate. The benefits of weighted selection are also demonstrated using a practical channel code used in third generation cellular systems. Our results show that optimal weighted selection yields a significant performance gain over conventional unweighted selection.

We propose a novel algorithm for placement of standard cells in VLSI circuits based on an analogy of this problem with neural networks. By employing some of the organising principles of these nets, we have attempted to improve the behaviour of the bipartitioning method as proposed by Kernighan and Lin. Our algorithm yields better quality placements compared with the above method, and also makes the final placement independent of the initial partition.

We report a precise measurement of the hyperfine interval in the 2P(1/2) state of Li-7. The transition from the ground state (D-1 line) is accessed using a diode laser and the technique of saturated-absorption spectroscopy in hot Li vapor. The interval is measured by locking an acousto-optic modulator to the frequency difference between the two hyperfine peaks. The measured interval of 92.040(6) MHz is consistent with an earlier measurement reported by us using an atomic-beam spectrometer Das and Natarajan, J. Phys. B 41, 035001 (2008)]. The interval yields the magnetic dipole constant in the P-1/2 state as A = 46.047(3), which is discrepant from theoretical calculations by > 80 kHz.

The critical, and often most difficult, step in structure elucidation of diverse classes of natural peptides is the determination of correct disulfide pairing between multiple cysteine residues. Here, we present a direct mass spectrometric analytical methodology for the determination of disulfide pairing. Protonated peptides, having multiple disulfide bonds, fragmented under collision induced dissociation (CID) conditions and preferentially cleave along the peptide backbone, with occasional disulfide fragmentation either by C-beta-S bond cleavage through H-alpha abstraction to yield dehydroalanine and cysteinepersulfide, or by S-S bond cleavage through H-beta abstraction to yield the thioaldehyde and cysteine. Further fragmentation of the initial set of product ions (MSn) yields third and fourth generation fragment ions, permitting a distinction between the various possible disulfide bonded structures. This approach is illustrated by establishing cysteine pairing patterns in five conotoxins containing two disulfide bonds. The methodology is extended to the Conus araneosus peptides An 446 and Ar1430, two 14 residue sequences containing 3 disulfide bonds. A distinction between 15 possible disulfide pairing schemes becomes possible using direct mass spectral fragmentation of the native peptides together with fragmentation of enzymatically nicked peptides.
