In this paper, a new three-phase, five-level inverter topology with a single-dc source is presented. The proposed topology is obtained by cascading a three-level flying capacitor inverter with a flying H-bridge power cell in each phase. This topology has redundant switching states for generating different pole voltages. By selecting appropriate switching states, the capacitor voltages can be balanced instantaneously (as compared to the fundamental) in any direction of the current, irrespective of the load power factor. Another important feature of this topology is that if any H-bridge fails, it can be bypassed and the configuration can still operate as a three-level inverter at its full power rating. This feature improves the reliability of the circuit. A 3-kW induction motor is run with the proposed topology for the full modulation range. The effectiveness of the capacitor balancing algorithm is tested for the full range of speed and during the sudden acceleration of the motor.

Thin films of Ni-49 at.% Ti were deposited by DC magnetron sputtering on silicon substrates at 300 degrees C. The as-deposited amorphous films were annealed at a vacuum of 10(-6) mbar at various temperatures between 300 and 650 degrees C to study the effect of annealing on microstructure and mechanical properties. The as-deposited films showed partial crystallization on annealing at 500 degrees C. At 500 degrees C, a distinct oxidation layer, rich in titanium but depleted in Ni, was seen on the film surface. A gradual increase in thickness and number of layers of various oxide stoichiometries as well as growth of triangular shaped reaction zones were seen with increase in annealing temperature up to 650 degrees C. Nanoindentation studies showed that the film hardness values increase with increase in annealing temperature up to 600 degrees C and subsequently decrease at 650 degrees C. The results were explained on the basis of the change in microstructure as a result of oxidation on annealing.

This study deals with tailoring of the surface morphology, microstructure, and electrochemical properties of Sn thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering with different deposition rates. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy are used to characterize the film surface morphology. Electrochemical properties of Sn thin film are measured and compared by cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge cycle data at a constant current density. Sn thin film fabricated with a higher deposition rate exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 798 mAh g(-1) but reduced to 94 mAh g(-1) at 30th cycle. Film deposited with lower deposition rate delivered 770 mAh g(-1) during 1st cycle with improved capacity retention of 521 mAh g(-1) on 30th cycle. Comparison of electrochemical performances of these films has revealed important distinctions, which are associated with the surface morphology and hence on rate of deposition. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. ZnO/Si heterojunctions were fabricated by growing ZnO thin films on p-type Si (100) substrate by pulsed laser deposition without buffer layers. The crystallinity of the heterojunction was analyzed by high resolution X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. The optical quality of the film was analyzed by room temperature (RT) photoluminescence measurements. The high intense band to band emission confirmed the high quality of the ZnO thin films on Si. The electrical properties of the junction were studied by temperature dependent current-voltage measurements and RT capacitance-voltage (C-V) analysis. The charge carrier concentration and the barrier height (BH) were calculated, to be 5.6x10(19) cm(-3) and 0.6 eV respectively from the C-V plot. The BH and ideality factor, calculated using the thermionic emission (TE) model, were found to be highly temperature dependent. We observed a much lower value in Richardson constant, 5.19x10(-7)A/cm(2) K-2 than the theoretical value (32 A/cm(2) K-2) for ZnO. This analysis revealed the existence of a Gaussian distribution (GD) with a standard deviation of sigma(2)=0.035 V. By implementing the GD to the TE, the values of BH and Richardson constant were obtained as 1.3 eV and 39.97 A/cm(2) K-2 respectively from the modified Richardson plot. The obtained Richardson constant value is close to the theoretical value for n-ZnO. These high quality heterojunctions can be used for solar cell applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. A new type of multi-port isolated bidirectional DC-DC converter is proposed in this study. In the proposed converter, transfer of power takes place through addition of magnetomotive forces generated by multiple windings on a common transformer core. This eliminates the need for a centralised storage capacitor to interface all the ports. Hence, the requirement of an additional power transfer stage from the centralised capacitor can also be eliminated. The converter can be used for a multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) system. A pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy for controlling simultaneous power flow in the MIMO converter is also proposed. The proposed PWM scheme works in the discontinuous conduction mode. The leakage inductance can be chosen to aid power transfer. By using the proposed converter topology and PWM scheme, the need to compute power flow equations to determine the magnitude and direction of power flow between ports is alleviated. Instead, a simple controller structure based on average current control can be used to control the power flow. This study discusses the operating phases of the proposed multi-port converter along with its PWM scheme, the design process for each of the ports and finally experimental waveforms that validate the multi-port scheme.

Understanding and controlling growth stress is a requisite for integrating oxides with Si. Yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) is both an important functional oxide and a buffer layer material needed for integrating other functional oxides. Stress evolution during the growth of (100) and (111) oriented YSZ on Si (100) by radio frequency and reactive direct current sputtering has been investigated with an in-situ monitor and correlated with texture evolution. Films nucleated at rates <5 nm/min are found to be (111) oriented and grow predominantly under a compressive steady state stress. Films nucleated at rates >20 nm/min are found to be (100) oriented and grow under tension. A change in growth rate following the nucleation stage does not change the orientation. The value of the final steady state stress varies from -4.7 GPa to 0.3 GPa. The in-situ studies show that the steady state stress generation is a dynamic phenomenon occurring at the growth surface and not decided at film nucleation. The combination of stress evolution and texture evolution data shows that the adatom injection into the grain boundaries is the predominant source of compressive stress and grain boundary formation at the growth surface is the source of tensile stress. The polyaniline-PbO composites of various mass fractions were prepared by in situ polymerisation. The prepared samples were characterised by FTIR, and the dominant peaks confirmed the formation of polyaniline-PbO composites. The SEM study shows a granular agglomerated morphology, and increases with an increase in the lead oxide mass % in polyaniline. Direct current (DC) conductivity (sigma (DC)) was studied as a function of temperature (T). From these studies, it was found that conductivity increased at higher temperatures due to the polarons hopping from one localised state to another. DSC studies reveal, the decrease in peak temperature from 273A degrees C (pure PANI) to 169.2A degrees C, 193.5A degrees C, 218.4A degrees C, 235.2A degrees C, and 224.2A degrees C, respectively for the various mass fractions (10 %, 30 %, 20 %, 40 %, and 50 %) of polyaniline-PbO composites.

This paper reports optical and nanomechanical properties of predominantly a-axis oriented AlN thin films. These films were deposited by reactive DC magnetron sputtering technique at an optimal target to substrate distance of 180 mm. X-ray rocking curve (FWHM = 52 arcsec) studies confirmed the preferred orientation. Spectroscopic ellipsometry revealed a refractive index of 1.93 at a wavelength of 546 nm. The hardness and elastic modulus of these films were 17 and 190 GPa, respectively, which are much higher than those reported earlier can be useful for piezoelectric films in bulk acoustic wave resonators. Chromium nitride (CrN) thin films were deposited at room temperature on silicon and glass substrates using DC reactive magnetron sputtering in Ar + N-2 plasma. Structure and mechanical properties of these films were examined by using XRD, FESEM and nanoindentation techniques. XRD studies revealed that films are of mixed phase at lower nitrogen partial pressure (P-N2) and single phase at higher (P-N2). Microscopy results show that the films were composed of non-equiaxed columns with nanocrystallite morphology. The hardness and elastic modulus of the films increase with increasing nitrogen partial pressure (P-N2). A maximum hardness of similar to 29 GPa and elastic modulus of 341 GPa were obtained, which make these films useful for several potential applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Photoassisted electrolysis of water is considered as an effective way of storing solar energy in the form of hydrogen fuel. This overall reaction involves the oxidation of water to oxygen at the anode and the reduction of protons to hydrogen at the cathode. Cobalt-phosphate-based catalyst (Co-Pi) is a potentially useful material for oxygen evolution reaction. In the present study, electrochemical deposition of Co-Pi catalyst is carried out on Au-coated quartz crystal from 0.1 M phosphate buffer (pH 7) containing 0.5 mM Co2+ ion, along with the simultaneous measurement of mass changes at the electrode surface. Cyclic voltammograms and mass variations are recorded during the course of deposition. A current peak is observed at 0.92 V vs Ag/AgCl, 3 M KCl corresponding to oxidation of Co2+ ion. The mass of the electrode starts increasing at this potential, suggesting the deposition of a Co(III)-based insoluble product on the electrode surface. The stability of the catalyst is also studied at several potentials in both buffered and nonbuffered electrolyte by monitoring the real-time mass variations.

An analytical expression is derived for calculating the rms current through the DC link capacitor in a three level inverter. The output current of the inverter is assumed to sinusoidal. Variations in the capacitor rms current with modulation index as well as line side power factor are studied. The worst case current stress on the capacitor is determined. This is required for sizing the capacitor and is useful for predicting the capacitor losses and life. The analytical expression derived is validated through simulations and experimental results at a number of operating points.

The paper presents a new controller inspired by the human experience based, voluntary body action control (dubbed motor control) learning mechanism. The controller is called Experience Mapping based Prediction Controller (EMPC). EMPC is designed with auto-learning features without the need for the plant model. The core of the controller is formed around the motor action prediction-control mechanism of humans based on past experiential learning with the ability to adapt to environmental changes intelligently. EMPC is utilized for high precision position control of DC motors. The simulation results are presented to show that accurate position control is achieved using EMPC for step and dynamic demands. The performance of EMPC is compared with conventional PD controller and MRAC based position controller under different system conditions. Position Control using EMPC is practically implemented and the results are presented.

Electrodeposition of Co-W alloy coatings has been carried out with DC and PC using gluconate bath at different pH. These coatings are characterized for their structure, morphology and chemical composition by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Alloy coatings plated at pH8 are crystalline, whereas coatings electrodeposited at pH5 are nanocrystalline in nature. XPS studies have demonstrated that as-deposited alloy plated at pH8 with DC contain only Co2+ and W6+ species, whereas that alloy plated at pH5 has significant amount of Co-0 and W-0 along with Co2+ and W6+ species. Again, Co2+ and W6+ are main species in all as-deposited PC plated alloys in both pH. Co-0 concentration increases upon successive sputtering of all alloy coatings. In contrast, mainly W6+ species is detected in the following layers of all alloys plated with PC. Alloys plated at pH5 show higher microhardness compared to their pH8 counterparts.

We report, strong ultraviolet (UV) emission from ZnO nanoparticle thin film obtained by a green synthesis, where the film is formed by the microwave irradiation of the alcohol solution of the precursor. The deposition is carried out in non-aqueous medium without the use of any surfactant, and the film formation is quick (5 min). The film is uniform comprising of mono-disperse nanoparticles having a narrow size distribution (15-22 nm), and that cover over an entire area (625 mm(2)) of the substrate. The growth rate is comparatively high (30-70 nm/min). It is possible to tune the morphology of the films and the UV emission by varying the process parameters. The growth mechanism is discussed precisely and schematic of the growth process is provided.

Pure and cadmium doped tin oxide thin films were deposited on glass substrates from aqueous solution of cadmium acetate, tin (IV) chloride and sodium hydroxide by the nebulizer spray pyrolysis (NSP) technique. X-ray diffraction reveals that all films have tetragonal crystalline structure with preferential orientation along (200) plane. On application of the Scherrer formula, it is found that the maximum size of grains is 67 nm. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the grains are of rod and spherical in shape. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis reveals the average ratio of the atomic percentage of pure and Cd doped SnO2 films. The electrical resistivity is found to be 10(2) Omega cm at higher temperature (170 degrees C) and 10(3) Omega cm at lower temperature (30 degrees C). Optical band gap energy was determined from transmittance and absorbance data obtained from UV-vis spectra. Optical studies reveal that the band gap energy decreases from 3.90 eV to 3.52 eV due to the addition of Cd as dopant with different concentrations.
