A direct borohydride-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell employing carbon-supported Prussian Blue (PB) as mediated electron-transfer cathode catalyst is reported. While operating at 30 °C, the direct borohydride-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell employing carbon-supported PB cathode catalyst shows superior performance with the maximum output power density of 68 mW cm−2 at an operating voltage of 1.1 V compared to direct borohydride-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell employing the conventional gold-based cathode with the maximum output power density of 47 mW cm−2 at an operating voltage of 0.7 V. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX) suggest that anchoring of Cetyl-Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB) as a surfactant moiety on carbon-supported PB affects the catalyst morphology. Polarization studies on direct borohydride-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell with carbon-supported CTAB-anchored PB cathode exhibit better performance with the maximum output power density of 50 mW cm−2 at an operating voltage of 1 V than the direct borohydride-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell with carbon-supported Prussian Blue without CTAB with the maximum output power density of 29 mW cm−2 at an operating voltage of 1 V.

The ligand bis(diphenylphosphino) isopropylamine (dppipa) has been shown to be a versatile ligand sporting different coordination modes and geometries dictated by copper(I). Most of the molecular structures were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. It is found in a chelating mode, in a monomeric complex when the ligand to copper ratio is 2:1. A tetrameric complex is formed when low ratios of ligand to metal (1: 2) were used. But with increasing ratios of ligand to metal (1: 1 and 2: 1), a trimer or a dimer was obtained depending on the crystallization conditions. Variable temperature P-31{H-1} NMR spectra of these complexes in solution showed that the Cu-P bond was labile and the highly strained 4-membered structure chelate found in the solid state readily converted to a bridged structures. On the other hand, complexes with the ligand in a bridging mode in the solid state did not form chelated structures in solution. The effect of adding tetra-alkylammonium salts to solutions of various complexes of dppipa were probed by P-31{H-1} NMR and revealed the effect of counter ions on the stability of complexes in solution. Two binuclear copper(II) complexes one (complex 1) with a macrocyclic ligand (H(2)L1) and other (complex 2) with a macroacyclic (end-off type) compartmental ligand (HL2) have been synthesized from single pot template synthesis involving copper(II) nitrate, 1,2diaminoethane, 4-methyl-2,6-diformylphenol, and sodium azide. Structure analysis of complex I reveals that there are actually two half molecules present in the asymmetric unit and so two complexes (molecule-I and molecule-II) are present in unit cell, although they show slight differences. The two Cu(II) centers are in distorted square pyramidal coordination environment with two endogenous phenoxo bridges provided by the phenolate of H(2)L1 I having Cu-Cu separations of 2.9133(10) angstrom and 2.9103(10) in the two molecules. In complex 2 the coordination environments around two Cu(II) centers are asymmetric, Cu1 is in distorted square pyramidal environment whereas, the coordination environment around Cu2 is distorted octahedral. The two Cu(II) centers in complex 2 are connected by two different kinds of bridges, one is endogenous phenoxo bridge provided by the phenolate of the ligand HL2 and the other is exogenous azido bridge (mu-(1),(l) type) with Cu-Cu distance of 3.032(10) angstrom. Variable temperature magnetic studies show that two Cu(II) centers in both the complexes are strongly antiferromagnetically coupled with J = -625 +/- 5 cm(-1) and J = -188.6 +/- 1cm(-1) for complex 1 and 2, respectively. The crucial role of oxide surface chemical composition on ion transport in "soggy sand" electrolytes is discussed in a systematic manner. A prototype soggy sand electrolytic system comprising aerosil silica functionalized with various hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties dispersed in lithium perchlorate-ethylene glycol solution was used for the study. Detailed rheology studies show that the attractive particle network in the case of the composite with unmodified aerosil silica (with surface silanol groups) is most favorable for percolation in ionic conductivity, as well as rendering the composite with beneficial elastic mechanical properties: Though weaker in strength compared to the composite with unmodified aerosil particles, attractive particle networks are also observed in composites of aerosil particles with surfaces partially substituted with hydrophobic groups. The percolation in ionic conductivity is, however, dependent on the size of the hydrophobic moiety. No spanning attractive particle network was formed for aerosil particles with surfaces modified with stronger hydrophilic groups (than silanol), and as a result, no percolation in ionic conductivity was observed. The composite with hydrophilic particles was a sol, contrary to gels obtained in the case of unmodified aerosil, and partially substituted with hydrophobic groups.

Surfactant anion intercalated hydroxy salts of copper and cobalt of the formula M(OH)(2-x)(surf)(x)center dot mH(2)O [M = Cu, Co; surf = dodecyl sulfate. dodecyl benzene sulfonate. and x = 0.5 for Cu and 0.67 for Co] delaminate readily in 1-butanol to give translucent colloidal dispersions that are stable for months. The extent of delamination and the colloidal dispersion observed in these solids is higher than what had been observed for layered double hydroxides. The dispersions yield the corresponding nanoparticulate oxides on solvothermal decomposition. While the copper hydroxy salt forms similar to 300 nm dendrimer-like CuO nanostructures comprising nanorods of similar to 10 nm diameter, the cobalt analogue forms similar to 20 nm superparamagnetic particles of Co3O4.

Ternary copper(II) complexes [Cu(L-trp)(B)(H2O)](NO3) ( 1–3) and [Cu(L-phe)(B)(H2O)](NO3) ( 4–6) of L-tryptophan (L-trp) and L-phenylalanine (L-phe) having phenanthroline bases (B), viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen, 1 and 4), dipyrido[3,2-d:2,3-f]quinoxaline (dpq, 2 and 5) and dipyrido[3,2-a:2,3-c]phenazine (dppz, 3 and 6), were prepared and characterized by physico-chemical techniques. Complexes 3 and 6 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography and show the presence of a square pyramidal (4 + 1) CuN3O2 coordination geometry in which the N,O-donor amino acid (L-trp or L-phe) and N,N-donor phenanthroline base bind at the equatorial plane with an aqua ligand coordinated at the elongated axial site. Complex 3 shows significant distortion from the square pyramidal geometry and a strong intramolecular – stacking interaction between the pendant indole ring of L-trp and the planar dppz aromatic moiety. All the complexes display good binding propensity to the calf thymus DNA giving an order: 3, 6 (dppz) > 2, 5 (dpq) > 1, 4 (phen). The binding constant (Kb) values are in the range of 2.1 × 104–1.1 × 106 mol-1 with the binding site size (s) values of 0.17–0.63. The phen and dpq complexes are minor groove binders while the dppz analogues bind at the DNA major groove. Theoretical DNA docking studies on 2 and 3 show the close proximity of two photosensitizers, viz. the indole moiety of L-trp and the quinoxaline/phenazine of the dpq/dppz bases, to the complementary DNA strands. Complexes 2 and 3 show oxidative DNA double strand breaks (dsb) of supercoiled (SC) DNA forming a significant quantity of linear DNA along with the nicked circular (NC) form on photoexposure to UV-A light of 365 nm and red light of 647.1 nm (Ar–Kr laser). Complexes 1, 5 and 6 show only single strand breaks (ssb) forming NC DNA. The red light induced DNA cleavage involves metal-assisted photosensitization of L-trp and dpq/dppz base resulting in the formation of a reactive singlet oxygen (1O2) species.

Sol-gel route was employed to grow polycrystalline thin films of Li-doped ZnO thin films (Zn1-xLixO, x=0.15). Polycrystalline films were obtained at a growth temperature of 400-500 degrees C. Ferroelectricity in Zn0.85Li0.15O was verified by examining the temperature variation of the real and imaginary parts of dielectric constant, and from the C-V measurements. The phase transition temperature was found to be 330 K. The room-temperature dielectric constant and dissipation factor were 15.5 and 0.09 respectively, at a frequency of 100 kHz. The films exhibited well-defined hysteresis loop, and the values of spontaneous polarization (P-s) and coercive field were 0.15 mu C/cm(2) and 20 kV/cm, respectively, confirming the presence of ferroelectricity.

The performance of exfoliated graphite (EG)–ruthenium oxide (RuOx) composites as binderless electrodes is evaluated for electrochemical capacitors (ECs). A composite of EG–RuOx is prepared by a modified sol–gel process. The material is characterized using X-ray diffraction and microscopy. Electrochemical capacitors with the composite electrodes in the presence of aqueous sulfuric acid (H2SO4) electrolyte are evaluated using voltammetry, impedance and charge–discharge studies. Cyclic voltammetry reveals very stable current–voltage behaviour up to several thousands of cycles, as well as high specific capacitances, e.g., a few hundreds of farads per gram for the composite that contains 16.5 wt.% RuOx.

Catalytic activity of cordierite honeycomb by a completely new coating method for the oxidation of major hydrocarbons in exhaust gas is reported here. The new coating process consists of (a) dipping and growing γ-Al2O3 on cordierite by combustion of monolith dipped in the aqueous solution of Al(NO3)3 and oxalyldihydrazide (ODH) (or glycine) at 600 °C and active catalyst phase Ce0.98Pd0.02O2−δ on γ-Al2O3-coated cordierite again by combustion of monolith dipped in the aqueous solution of ceric ammonium nitrate, ODH and 1.2 × 10−3 M PdCl2 solution at 500 °C. Weight of active catalyst can be varied from 0.02 wt% to 2 wt% which is sufficient but can be loaded even up to 12 wt% by repeating dip dry combustion. Adhesion of catalyst to cordierite surface is via oxide growth, which is very strong. ‘HC’ oxidation over the monolith catalyst is carried out with a mixture having the composition, 470 ppm of both propene and propane and 870 ppm of both ethylene and acetylene with the varying amount of O2. Three-way catalytic test is done by putting hydrocarbon mixture along with CO (10 000 ppm), NO (2000 ppm) and O2 (15 000 ppm). Below 350 °C full conversion is achieved. In this method, handling of nano-material powder is avoided.

We report here, the study carried out on piezoelectric thin film for MEMS/Microsensor applications. The study includes characterization of sputtered thin film using indirect methods and comparison of behavior using cantilever technique for the confirmation of piezoelectric property. A suitable experimental setup was designed and fabricated for subjecting the cantilever to vibrate. The data was recorded for piezoelectric thin films deposited with different compositions. It is clearly evident that the direct method is inexpensive and easier for determining the quality of the deposited piezoelectric thin film.

Refining reactions in steelmaking primarily involve oxidation of impurity element(s). The oxidation potential of the slag and the activity of oxygen in the metal (h(O)) are the major factors controlling these chemical reactions. In turn, the oxidation potential of the slag is influenced strongly by the equilibrium distribution of oxygen between ferrous and ferric oxides. We recently investigated the activity coefficient of FeO in steelmaking slag and the effect of chemical composition thereon. This work is focused on estimation of theactivity coefficient of Fe2O3.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were discovered by Iijima in 1991 as the fourth form of carbon. Carbon nanotubes are the ultimate form of the carbon fibre because of its high Young's modulus in the order of 1 TPa, which is very useful for load transfer in nanocomposites. In the present work, CNT/Cu nanocomposites were fabricated by the powder metallurgy technique, and after extrusion of the nanocomposites, bright field transmission electron microscopic studies were carried out. From the transmission electron microscopic images obtained, a novel method of ascertaining the Young's modulus of multiwalled CNTs is worked out in the present paper, which turns out to be 0.94 TPa, which is consistent with experimental results. Furthermore, an attempt is made to investigate the microhardness of copper by reinforcing it with multiwalled CNTs. There is an increase in hardness by twofold in CNT/Cu nanocomposites as compared to pure Cu matrix. This is due to high relative density, even distribution of CNTs and proper bonding at CNT/Cu interfaces.
