An exact solution for determining the thermal stresses in a finite short cylinder due to an axisymmetric steady temperature field along the curved surface has been given. It is shown that a part of the solution obtained for this problem can be used to determine the thermal stresses in a finite solid cylinder heated over the end surfaces. Numerical results for a finite cylinder symmetrically heated over a portion on the curved surface and heated over the complete end surfaces have been given.

A new equation for predicting the thermal conductivities of organic liquids using dimension-less analysis is given. The equation (Equation Presented) correlates 51 different liquids tested within 11% average error and 17% standard deviation. A comparison of the proposed equation with the available correlations and its application to some industrially important liquids show that this equation can be safely used to calculate the thermal conductivities at 20°C. and 1 atm. pressure for organic liquids of known molecular weight. Cp and ΔHv - the only two parameters for which experimental values must be known for making use of this equation - can be calculated using other well known correlations. The proposed equation is not applicable to inorganic liquids.

The preparation of three different types of carbonates of praseodymium, neodymium and terbium has been described. The carbonates have been characterized by potentiometry, chemical analysis, X-ray crystallography, infra-red spectroscopy and by their thermal behaviour. The thermal decomposition of several carbonates has been studied exhaustively under a variety of conditions and the stoicheiometry, thermodynamics and energetics of the reactions at various stages of decomposition have been examined. The stoicheiometry of the oxides obtained as final products of decomposition has been examined.

A three-dimensional exact solution for determining the thermal stresses in a finite hollow cylinder subject to a steady state axisymmetric temperature field over one of its end surfaces has been given. Numerical results for a hollow cylinder, having lenght to outer diameter ratio equal to one and inner to outer diameter ratio equal to 0.75, subjected to a symmetric temperature variation over the end surfaces of the cylinder have been given.

A method of determining the thermal stresses in a flat rectangular isotropic plate of constant thickness with arbitrary temperature distribution in the plane of the plate and with no variation in temperature through the thickness is presented. The thermal stress have been obtained in terms of Fourier series and integrals that satisfy the differential equation and the boundary conditions. Several examples have been presented to show the application of the method.

A three-dimensional rigorous solution for determining thermal stresses in a finite solid cylinder due to a steady state axisymmetric temperature field over one of its end surfaces is given. Numerical results for a solid cylinder having a length to diameter ratio equal to one and subjected to a symmetric temperature variation over half the radius of the cylinder at the end surfaces are included. These results have been compared with the results of the approximate solution given by W. Nowacki.

The temperature dependence of thermal conductivity of liquids as given by Horrocks and McLaughlin is re-examined and useful relations to estimate thermal conductivity are presented. In the case of the 12 homologous series considered the maximum deviation is about 5%.

Transparent glasses of various compositions in the system (100 -x)(Li2B4O7)-x(Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30) (5 <= x <= 20, in molar ratio) were fabricated by splat quenching technique. The glassy nature of the as-quenched samples was established by differential thermal analyses (DTA). X-ray powder diffraction studies confirmed the as-quenched glasses to be amorphous and the heat-treated to be nanocrystalline. Controlled heat-treatment of the as-quenched glasses at 500 degrees C for 8 h yielded nanocrystallites embedded in the glass matrix. High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) of these samples established the size of the crystallites to be in the nano-range and confirmed the phase to be that of Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30 (BLTN) which was, initially, identified by X-ray powder diffraction. The frequency, temperature and compositional dependence of the dielectric constant and the electrical conductivity of the glasses and glass nanocrystal composites were investigated in the 100 Hz to 10 MHz frequency range. Electrical relaxations were analyzed using the electric modulus formalisms. The imaginary part of electric modulus spectra was modeled using an approximate solution of Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts relation. The frequency dependent electrical conductivity was rationalized using Jonscher's power law. The activation energy associated with the dc conductivity was ascribed to the motion of Li+ ions in the glass matrix. The activation energy associated with dielectric relaxation was almost equal to that of the dc conductivity, indicating that the same species took part in both the processes. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The significant correlation coefficient between the terrestial heat flow and thermal conductivity computed from the continental heat flow data by Horai and Nur [1]2) may be explained as a natural consequence of terrestrial heat flow through a random medium. The theory predicts a value of 0.40 for the correlation coefficient. A simple statistical test shows that the majority of the computed coefficients belong to the statistical population whose mean is equal to the theoretical correlation coefficient. There are, however, a few observations of unsually high correlation coefficient which cannot be explained by the above hypothesis.

The thermal degradation behavior of banana fiber and polypropylene/banana fiber composites has been studied by thermogravimetric analysis. Banana fiber was found to be decomposing in two stages, first one around 320 degrees C and the second one around 450 degrees C. For chemically treated banana fiber, the decomposition process has been at a higher temperature, indicating thermal stability for the treated fiber. Activation energies for thermal degradation were estimated using Coats and Redfern method. Calorific value of the banana fiber was measured using a constant volume isothermal bomb calorimeter. rystallization studies exhibited an increase in the crystallization temperature and crystallinity of polypropylene upon the addition of banana fiber. Matthias, Miller and Remeika1 were the first to observe that triglycine sulphate becomes ferroelectric below 47°C. The dielectric properties and the specific heat of this crystal have been studied through the transition temperature by Hoshino, Mitsui, Jona and Pepinsky2. The observed variation of the dielectric properties as a function of temperature in this crystal shows that the transition is of second order. Hoshino et al. concluded that the anomaly is not of the λ-type, since their specific heat - temperature curve showed only a hump. It was decided to investigate the thermal expansion of this crystal as it might throw some light on the nature of the transition.
