We have consider ed the transient motion of art electrically conducting viscous compressible fluid which is in contact with an insulated infinite disk. The initial motion is considered to be due to the uniform rotation of the disk in an otherwise stationary fluid or due to the uniform rigid rotation of the fluid over a stationary disk. Different cases of transient motion due to finite impulse imparted either to the disk or to the distant fluid have been investigated. Effects of the imposed axial magnetic field and the disk temperature on the transient flow are included. The nonlinear partial differential equations governing the motion are solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme along with the Newton's linearisation technique.

Negative differential capacitance (NDC) has been observed in n-GaN/p-Si heterojunctions grown by plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). The NDC is observed at low frequencies 1 and 10 kilohertz (kHz) and disappeared at a higher testing frequency of 100 kHz. The NDC is also studied with temperature and found that it has disappeared above 323 degrees C. Current-Voltage (I-V) characteristics of n-GaN /p-Si heterojunction were measured at different temperatures and are attributed to the space-charge-limited current (SCLC). A simple model involving two quantum states is proposed to explain the observed NDC behavior. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we have computed the quadratic nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of a class of weak charge transfer (CT) complexes. These weak complexes are formed when the methyl substituted benzenes (donors) are added to strong acceptors like chloranil (CHL) or di-chloro-di-cyano benzoquinone (DDQ) in chloroform or in dichloromethane. The formation of such complexes is manifested by the presence of a broad absorption maximum in the visible range of the spectrum where neither the donor nor the acceptor absorbs. The appearance of this visible band is due to CT interactions, which result in strong NLO responses. We have employed the semiempirical intermediate neglect of differential overlap (INDO/S) Hamiltonian to calculate the energy levels of these CT complexes using single and double configuration interaction (SDCI). The solvent effects are taken into account by using the self-consistent reaction field (SCRF) scheme. The geometry of the complex is obtained by exploring different relative molecular geometries by rotating the acceptor with respect to the fixed donor about three different axes. The theoretical geometry that best fits the experimental energy gaps, beta(HRS) and macroscopic depolarization ratios is taken to be the most probable geometry of the complex. Our studies show that the most probable geometry of these complexes in solution is the parallel displaced structure with a significant twist in some cases. Backlund transformations relating the solutions of linear PDE with variable coefficients to those of PDE with constant coefficients are found, generalizing the study of Varley and Seymour [2]. Auto-Backlund transformations are also determined. To facilitate the generation of new solutions via Backlund transformation, explicit solutions of both classes of the PDE just mentioned are found using invariance properties of these equations and other methods. Some of these solutions are new.

In this paper, we present a novel analytical formulation for the coupled partial differential equations governing electrostatically actuated constrained elastic structures of inhomogeneous material composition. We also present a computationally efficient numerical framework for solving the coupled equations over a reference domain with a fixed finite-element mesh. This serves two purposes: (i) a series of problems with varying geometries and piece-wise homogeneous and/or inhomogeneous material distribution can be solved with a single pre-processing step, (ii) topology optimization methods can be easily implemented by interpolating the material at each point in the reference domain from a void to a dielectric or a conductor. This is attained by considering the steady-state electrical current conduction equation with a `leaky capacitor' model instead of the usual electrostatic equation. This formulation is amenable for both static and transient problems in the elastic domain coupled with the quasi-electrostatic electric field. The procedure is numerically implemented on the COMSOL Multiphysics (R) platform using the weak variational form of the governing equations. Examples have been presented to show the accuracy and versatility of the scheme. The accuracy of the scheme is validated for the special case of piece-wise homogeneous material in the limit of the leaky-capacitor model approaching the ideal case.

We present a method for measuring the local velocities and first-order variations in velocities in a timevarying image. The scheme is an extension of the generalized gradient model that encompasses the local variation of velocity within a local patch of the image. Motion within a patch is analyzed in parallel by 42 different spatiotemporal filters derived from 6 linearly independent spatiotemporal kernels. No constraints are imposed on the image structure, and there is no need for smoothness constraints on the velocity field. The aperture problem does not arise so long as there is some two-dimensional structure in the patch being analyzed. Among the advantages of the scheme is that there is no requirement to calculate second or higher derivatives of the image function. This makes the scheme robust in the presence of noise. The spatiotemporal kernels are of simple form, involving Gaussian functions, and are biologically plausible receptive fields. The validity of the scheme is demonstrated by application to both synthetic and real video images sequences and by direct comparison with another recently published scheme Biol. Higher level of inversion is achieved with a less number of switches in the proposed scheme. The scheme proposes a five-level inverter for an open-end winding induction motor which uses only two DC-link rectifiers of voltage rating of Vdc/4, a neutral-point clamped (NPC) three-level inverter and a two-level inverter. Even though the two-level inverter is connected to the high-voltage side, it is always in square-wave operation. Since the two-level inverter is not switching in a pulse width modulated fashion and the magnitude of switching transient is only half compared to the convention three-level NPC inverter, the switching losses and electromagnetic interference is not so high. The scheme is experimentally verified on a 2.5 kW induction machine.

Frequency-domain scheduling and rate adaptation have helped next generation orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) based wireless cellular systems such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) achieve significantly higher spectral efficiencies. To overcome the severe uplink feedback bandwidth constraints, LTE uses several techniques to reduce the feedback required by a frequency-domain scheduler about the channel state information of all subcarriers of all users. In this paper, we analyze the throughput achieved by the User Selected Subband feedback scheme of LTE. In it, a user feeds back only the indices of the best M subbands and a single 4-bit estimate of the average rate achievable over all selected M subbands. In addition, we compare the performance with the subband-level feedback scheme of LTE, and highlight the role of the scheduler by comparing the performances of the unfair greedy scheduler and the proportional fair (PF) scheduler. Our analysis sheds several insights into the working of the feedback reduction techniques used in LTE.

Although a distinct need for FSH in the regulation of follicular maturation in the primate is well recognized, it is not clear how FSH controls the functionality of different cellular compartments of the follicle. It is also not evident whether there is a requirement for LH in follicular maturation in the primate. In the first part of the present study, female bonnet monkeys were administered a well-characterized ovine (o) LH antiserum to neutralize endogenous monkey LH for different periods during the follicular phase, and the effect on the overall follicular maturation process was assessed by analyzing serum estrogen (E) and progesterone (P) profiles. Neither continuous LH deprivation from Day 8 of the cycle nor deprivation of LH on any one day between Days 6 and 10 had a significant effect on serum E and P profiles and the follicular maturation process. The period for which the antiserum was effective was dependent upon the dose injected; 1 ml of the antiserum given on Day 8 blocked ovulation but not follicular maturation. To assess the effect of deprivation of LH/FSH at the cellular level, animals were deprived in vivo of LH (on Days 8 and 9 of the cycle) or of FSH (on Day 6 of the cycle) by injection of highly characterized hCG and ovine (o) FSH antisera, respectively; the in vitro responsiveness of granulosa and thecal cells isolated on Day 10 from these animals was then determined.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The influence of temperature-dependent viscosity and Prandtl number on the unsteady laminar nonsimilar forced convection flow over two-dimensional and axisymmetric bodies has been examined where the unsteadiness and (or) nonsimilarity are (is) due to the free stream velocity, mass transfer, and transverse curvature. The partial differential equations governing the flow which involve three independent variables have been solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme along with a quasilinearization technique. It is found that both the skin friction and heat transfer strongly respond to the unsteady free stream velocity distributions. The unsteadiness and injection cause the location of zero skin friction to move upstream. However, the effect of variable viscosity and Prandtl number is to move it downstream. The heat transfer is found to depend strongly on viscous dissipation, but the skin friction is little affected by it. In general, the results pertaining to variable fluid properties differ significantly, from those of constant fluid properties.

The problem of estimating the time-dependent statistical characteristics of a random dynamical system is studied under two different settings. In the first, the system dynamics is governed by a differential equation parameterized by a random parameter, while in the second, this is governed by a differential equation with an underlying parameter sequence characterized by a continuous time Markov chain. We propose, for the first time in the literature, stochastic approximation algorithms for estimating various time-dependent process characteristics of the system. In particular, we provide efficient estimators for quantities such as the mean, variance and distribution of the process at any given time as well as the joint distribution and the autocorrelation coefficient at different times. A novel aspect of our approach is that we assume that information on the parameter model (i.e., its distribution in the first case and transition probabilities of the Markov chain in the second) is not available in either case. This is unlike most other work in the literature that assumes availability of such information. Also, most of the prior work in the literature is geared towards analyzing the steady-state system behavior of the random dynamical system while our focus is on analyzing the time-dependent statistical characteristics which are in general difficult to obtain. We prove the almost sure convergence of our stochastic approximation scheme in each case to the true value of the quantity being estimated. We provide a general class of strongly consistent estimators for the aforementioned statistical quantities with regular sample average estimators being a specific instance of these. We also present an application of the proposed scheme on a widely used model in population biology. Numerical experiments in this framework show that the time-dependent process characteristics as obtained using our algorithm in each case exhibit excellent agreement with exact results.
