Oxidative addition of tetrachloro-ortho-benzoquinone to lambda(3)-cyclotriphosphazanes, [EtNP(OR)](3) results in an unprecedented ring contraction-rearrangement to give diazadiphosphetidines (EtN)(2)[P(OR)(O2C6Cl4)] [P(O2C6Cl4)-[N(Et)P(OR)(2)}] (R = C6H4Br-4 or C(6)H(3)Me(2)-2,6), a process indicated to be thermodynamically favourable on the basis of PM3 calculations.

A total synthesis of 11-O-methyldebenzoyltashironin

Effect of beta-lactamase-catalyzed hydrolysis of cephalosporins on peroxynitrite-mediated nitration of serum albumin and cytochrome c

The hydrolysis of beta-lactam antibiotics by beta-lactamases is one of the major bacterial defense systems. These enzymes generally hydrolyze a variety of antibiotics including the latest generation of cephalosporins, cephamycins and imipenem. In this paper, the effect of cephalosporins-based antibiotics on the peroxynitrite-mediated nitration of protein tyrosine is described. Although some of the antibiotics have weak inhibitory effect on the nitration reactions in the absence of beta-lactamase, they exhibit very strong inhibition in the presence of beta-lactamase. This is due to the elimination of heterocyclic thiol/thione moieties from cephalosporins by beta-lactamase-mediated hydrolysis. After the elimination, the thiols/thiones effectively scavenge peroxynitrite, leading to the inhibition of the nitration reactions.

Enhanced charge and spin currents in the one-dimensional disordered mesoscopic Hubbard ring

We consider a one-dimensional mesoscopic Hubbard ring with and without disorder and compute charge and spin stiffness as a measure of the permanent currents. For finite disorder we identify critical disorder strength beyond which the charge currents in a system with repulsive interactions are larger than those for a free system. The spin currents in the disordered repulsive Hubbard model are enhanced only for small U, where the magnetic state of the system corresponds to a charge-density wave pinned to the impurities. For large U, the state of the system corresponds to localized isolated spins and the spin currents are found to be suppressed. For the attractive Hubbard model we find that the charge currents are always suppressed compared to the free system at all length scales.

Observation of Water-Mediated Helix-Terminating Conformation in a Dehydrophenylalanine Peptide: Crystal and Solution Structure of the Octapeptide Ac-.DELTA.Phe-Val-.DELTA.Phe-Phe-Ala-Val-.DELTA.Phe-Gly-OMe

We have synthesised and determined the solution conformation and X-ray crystal structure of the octapeptide Ac-Delta Phe(1)-Val(2)-Delta Phe(3)-Phe(4)-Ala(5)-Val(6)-Delta Phe(7)-Gly(8)-OCH3 (Delta Phe = alpha,beta-dehydrophenylalanine) containing three Delta Phe residues as conformation constraining residues. In the solid state, the peptide folds into (i) an N-terminal (3)10(R)-helical pentapeptide segment, (ii) a middle non-helical segment, and (iii) a C-terminal incipient (3)10(L)-helical segment. The results of H-1 NMR data also suggest that a similar multiple-turn conformation for the peptide is largely maintained in solution. Though the C-terminal helix is incipient, the overall conformation of the octapeptide matches well with the conformation of the hairpins reported. Comparison of the pi-turn seen in the octapeptide molecule with those observed in proteins at the C-terminal end of helixes shows the structural similarity among them. A water molecule mediates the 5 --> 2 hydrogen bond in the pi-turn region. This is the first example of a water-inserted pi-turn in oligopeptides reported so far. Comparison between the present octapeptide and another (3)10(R)-helical dehydro nonapeptide Boc-Val-Delta Phe-Phe-Ala-Phe-Delta Phe-Val-Delta Phe-Gly-OCH3 solved by us recently, demonstrates the possible sequence-dependent conformational variations in alpha,beta-dehydrophenylalanine-containing oligopeptides.

Synthesis Based on Cyclohexadienes. 5. A New Approach to the Synthesis of a-Ring Aromatic Steroids - a Formal Total Synthesis of (+/-)-Estrone

A new strategy for the construction of A-ring aromatic steroids which resulted in the formal total synthesis of estrone is described. Thus reaction of the adduct (9), obtained from 1-methoxy-4-methylcyclohexa-1,4-diene and acrolein, with 3-(m-methoxyphenyl)propylmagnesium bromide followed by oxidation afforded the bicyclo[2.2.2]octene derivative (14). Acid-catalysed rearrangement of (14) followed by an intramolecular Michael addition resulted in the cis tetraenone (18) which was dehydrogenated with palladium chloride to the pentaenone (22). Li/NH3 reduction of (22) gave 3-methoxy-D-homoestra-1,3,5(10)-trien-16-one (31) which has been converted into the methyl ether (37) of marrianolic acid, and its methyl ester (38).

Thermal expansion of irradiated polyvinyl chloride from 10 K to 340 K

The coefficient of thermal expansion is measured for irradiated Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) from 10K to 340K. The samples of PVC are irradiated, up to 500 Mrad in steps of 100 Mrad, in air at room temperature by using Co gamma rays with a dose rate of 0.3 Mrad/h. The PVC is an amorphous sample which is confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The coefficient of thermal expansion is found to decrease with radiation dose from 10K to 110K and it increaseswith radiation dose from 110K to 340K. The results are explained on the basis of radiation induced degradation of the sample.

Synthesis of amino thiols and isocysteines via regioselective ring opening of sulfamidates with tetrathiomolybdate

Herein we present a simple and highly efficient method for the synthesis of beta and gamma-amino thiols via regioselective ring opening of sulfamidates with tetrathiomolybdate 1. The generality of this methodology has been shown by synthesizing carbohydrate derived beta-amino thiol. The scope and versatility of this methodology has been demonstrated by synthesizing biologically important unnatural amino acids like isocysteines in optically pure form. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Synthesis and Antioxidant Activity of Peptide-Based Ebselen Analogues

A series of di- and tripeptide-based ebselen analogues has been synthesized. The compounds were characterized by H-1, C-13, and Se-77 NMR spectroscopy and mass spectral techniques. The glutathione peroxidase (GPx)-like antioxidant activity has been studied by using H2O2, tert-butyl hydroperoxide (tBuOOH), and cumene hydroperoxide (Cum-OOH) as substrates, and glutathione (GSH) as a co-substrate. Although all the peptide-based compounds have a selenazole ring similar to that of ebselen, the GPx activity of these compounds highly depends on the nature of the peptide moiety attached to the nitrogen atom of the selenazole ring. It was observed that the introduction of a phenylalanine (Phe) amino acid residue in the N-terminal reduces the activity in all three peroxide systems. On the other hand, the introduction of aliphatic amino acid residues such as valine (Val) significantly enhances the GPx activity of the ebselen analogues. The difference in the catalytic activity of dipeptide-based ebselen derivatives can be ascribed mainly to the change in the reactivity of these compounds toward GSH and peroxide. Although the presence of the Val-Ala-CO2Me moiety facilitates the formation of a catalytically active selenol species, the reaction of ebselen analogues that has a Phe-Ile-CO2Me residue with GSH does not generate the corresponding selenol. To understand the antioxidant activity of the peptide-based ebselen analogues in the absence of GSH, these compounds were studied for their ability to inhibit peroxynitrite (PN)-mediated nitration of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and oxidation of dihydrorhodamine 123. In contrast to the GPx activity, the PN-scavenging activity of the Phe-based peptide analogues was found to be comparable to that of the Val-based compounds. However, the introduction of an additional Phe residue to the ebselen analogue that had a Val-Ala dipeptide significantly reduced the potency of the parent compound in PN-mediated nitration.

Organic Additive-Mediated Synthesis of Novel Cobalt(II) Hydroxides

Electrochemical precipitation of cobalt(II) hydroxide from nitrate solutions containing organic molecules, such as glucose, fructose, lactose, glycerol, and citric acid, yields a new modification of cobalt (II) hydroxide (a = 3.09 +/- 0.03 Angstrom, c = 23.34 +/- 0.36 Angstrom) that is isostructural with cu-nickel hydroxide; precipitation in the absence of organic additives gives the stable, brucite-like, beta-CO (OH)(2). Persistent currents in a one-dimensional ring for a disordered Hubbard model

We consider a one-dimensional Hubbard model in the presence of disorder. We compute the charge stiffness for a mesoscopic ring as a function of the size L, which is a measure of the persistent currents. We find that for finite disorder the persistent currents of the system with repulsive interactions are larger than those of the system with attractive interactions. This counterintuitive result is due to the fact that local-density fluctuations are reduced in the presence of repulsive interactions.

Reductive dimerization of organic thiocyanates to disulfides mediated by tetrathiomolybdate

An interesting reductive dimerization of organic thiocyanates assisted by benzyltriethylammonium tetrathiomolybdate, [(PhCH(2)NEt(3))(2)MoS4], 1, leads to the formation of the corresponding disulfides in high yields.

Thermal expansion studies of substituted CTP derivatives

Several new Na, Y and Zr substituted derivatives of Ca-0.5 Ti-2(PO4)(3) (CTP) have been synthesized. These derivatives retain the hexagonal structure of the parent (CTP) compound with minor changes in lattice parameters. Linear thermal expansion coefficients (alpha) have been obtained using a high sensitivity dilatometer.
