Crystals suitable for high resolution X-ray diffraction analysis have been grown of the 29,774-Da protein, xylanase (1,-4-beta-xylan xylanohydrolase EC 3.2.1.8) from the thermophilic fungus Thermoascus aurantiacus. This protein, an endoxylanase demonstrates the hydrolysis of β-(1-4)-Image -xylose linkage in xylans and crystallizes as monoclinic pinacoids in the presence of ammonium sulphate buffered at pH 6·5, and also with neutral polyethylene glycol 6000. The crystals belong to space group P 21 and have cell dimensions, a = 41·2 Å, b = 67·76 Å, c = 51·8 Å; β = 113·2°.

AI83Y10Ni7, AI80Y10Ni10 and AI80Y10Cu10 alloys were studied by the rapid solidification processing route. The glass-forming ability was found to decrease in the order of alloys mentioned above. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of these amorphous alloys showed that the amorphous phase in AI-Y-Ni alloys has a higher thermal stability when compared to that in AI-Y-Cu alloys. A four-stage crystallization sequence could be identified for the AI-Y-Ni amorphous alloys. Even though the AI80Y10Cu10 alloy showed four exothermic peaks in the DSC study, a definite crystallization sequence could not be arrived at due to the coexistence of many crystalline phases along with the amorphous phase in the melt-spun condition.

We investigate the vortex behavior of YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films sandwiched between two ferromagnetic layers (La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/YBa2Cu3O7-delta/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3). The magnetization study on La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/YBa2Cu3O7-delta/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 trilayers conspicuously shows the presence of both ferromagnetic and diamagnetic phases. The magnetotransport study on the trilayers reveals a significant reduction in the activation energy (U) for the vortex motion in YBa2Cu3O7-delta. Besides, the ``U'' exhibits a logarithmic dependence on the applied magnetic field which directly indicates the existence of decoupled two-dimensional (2D) pancake vortices present in the CuO2 layers. The evidence of 2D decoupled vortex behavior in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/YBa2Cu3O7-delta/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 is believed to arise from (a) the weakening of superconducting coherence length along the c-axis and (b) enhanced intraplane vortex-vortex interaction due to the presence of ferromagnetic layers. NiTi thin films deposited by DC magnetron sputtering of an alloy (Ni/Ti:45/55) target at different deposition rates and substrate temperatures were analyzed for their structure and mechanical properties. The crystalline structure, phase-transformation and mechanical response were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Nano-indentation techniques, respectively. The films were deposited on silicon substrates maintained at temperatures in the range 300 to 500 degrees C and post-annealed at 600 degrees C for four hours to ensure film crystallinity. Films deposited at 300 degrees C and annealed for 600 degrees C have exhibited crystalline behavior with Austenite phase as the prominent phase. Deposition onto substrates held at higher deposition temperatures (400 and 500 degrees C) resulted in the co-existence of Austenite phase along with Martensite phase. The increase in deposition rates corresponding to increase in cathode current from 250 to 350 mA has also resulted in the appearance of Martensite phase as well as improvement in crystallinity. XRD analysis revealed that the crystalline film structure is strongly influenced by process parameters such as substrate temperature and deposition rate. DSC results indicate that the film deposited at 300 degrees C had its crystallization temperature at 445 degrees C in the first thermal cycle, which is further confirmed by stress temperature response. In the second thermal cycle the Austenite and Martensite transitions were observed at 75 and 60 degrees C respectively. However, the films deposited at 500 degrees C had the Austenite and Martensite transitions at 73 and 58 degrees C, respectively. Elastic modulus and hardness values increased from 93 to 145 GPa and 7.2 to 12.6 GPa, respectively, with increase in deposition rates. These results are explained on the basis of change in film composition and crystallization. (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd

Bulk, melt quenched Ge18Te82-xBix glasses (1 <= x <= 4) have been found to exhibit memory type electrical switching behavior, which is in agreement with the lower thermal diffusivity values of Ge-Te-Bi samples. A linear variation in switching voltages (V-th) has been found in these samples with increase in thickness which is consistent with the memory type electrical switching. Also, the switching voltages have been found to decrease with an increase in temperature which happens due to the decrease in the activation energy for crystallization at higher temperatures. Further. V-th of Ge18Te82-xBix glasses have been found to decrease with the increase in Bi content, indicating that in the Ge-Te-Bi system, the resistivity of the additive has a stronger role to play in the composition dependence of V-th, in comparison with the network connectivity and rigidity factors. In addition, the composition dependence of crystallization activation energy has been found to show a decrease with an increase in Bi content, which is consistent with the observed decrease in the switching voltages. X-ray diffraction studies on thermally crystallized samples reveal the presence of hexagonal Te, GeTe, Bi2Te3 phases, suggesting that bismuth is not taking part in network formation to a greater extent, as reflected in the variation of switching voltages with the addition of Bi. SEM studies on switched and un-switched regions of Ge-Te-Bi samples indicate that there are morphological changes in the switched region, which can be attributed to the formation of the crystalline channel between two electrodes during switching. Temperature dependent electrical transport behavior of InN/GaN heterostructure based Schottky diodes
Resumo:
InN/GaN heterostructure based Schottky diodes were fabricated by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The temperature dependent electrical transport properties were carried out for InN/GaN heterostructure. The barrier height and the ideality factor of the Schottky diodes were found to be temperature dependent. The temperature dependence of the barrier height indicates that the Schottky barrier height is inhomogeneous in nature at the heterostructure interface. The higher value of the ideality factor and its temperature dependence suggest that the current transport is primarily dominated by thermionic field emission (TFE) other than thermionic emission (TE). The room temperature barrier height obtained by using TE and TFE models were 1.08 and 1.43 eV, respectively. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. doi: 10.1063/1.3549685]

With construction of a thermochemical energy conversion prototype system to store solar heat, thermal dissociation of pellets of Ca(OH)2 and hydration of CaO have been investigated in some detail for its application to the system. The inorganic substance is very attractive as a material for long term heat storage, but molar density changes associated with the reaction are fairly large. Therefore, this factor has been taken into account in the kinetic equation. The importance of additives and pellet size has been discussed considering reactivity and strength of pellets. An analysis has been attempted when chemical reaction is important. The deformation of pellets was observed during hydration.

Low-cycle fatigue (LCF) responses of NIMONIC PE-16 for various prior microstructures and strain amplitudes have been evaluated and the fatigue behavior has been explained in terms of the operative deformation mechanisms. Total strain-controlled LCF tests were performed at 923 K on samples possessing three different prior microstructures: alloy A in solution-annealed condition (free of γ′ and carbides), alloy B with double aging treatment (spherical γ′ of 18-nm diameter and M23C6), and alloy C with another double aging treatment (γ′ of size 35 nm, MC and M23C6). All three microstructures exhibited an intial cyclic hardening followed by a period of gradual softening at 923 K. Coffin-Manson plots describing the plastic strain amplitudevs number of reversals to failure showed that alloy A had maximum fatigue life while C showed the least. Alloy B exhibited a two-slope behavior in the Coffin-Manson plot over the strain amplitudes investigated. This has been ascribed to the change in the degree of homogeneity of deformation at high and low strain amplitudes. Transmission electron microscopic studies were carried out to characterize the various deformation mechanisms and precipitation reactions occurring during fatigue testign. Fresh precipitation of fine γ′ was confirmed by the development of “mottled contrast” in alloy C. Evidence for the shearing of the ordered γ′ precipitates was revealed by the presence of superdislocations in alloy C. Repeated shearing during cyclic loading led to the reduction in the size of the γ′ and consequent softening. Coarser γ′ precipitates were associated with Orowan loops. The observed fatigue behavior has been rationalized based on the micromechanisms stated above and on the degree of homogenization of slip assessed by slipband spacing measurements on tested samples.

We present analytic results to show that the Schwinger-boson hole-fermion mean-field state exhibits non-Fermi liquid behavior due to spin-charge separation. The physical electron Green's function consists of three additive components. (a) A Fermi-liquid component associated with the bose condensate. (b) A non-Fermi liquid component which has a logarithmic peak and a long tail that gives rise to a linear density of states that is symmetric about the Fermi level and a momentum distribution function with a logarithmic discontinuity at the Fermi surface. (c) A second non-Fermi liquid component associated with the thermal bosons which leads to a constant density of states. It is shown that zero-point fluctuations associated with the spin-degrees of freedom are responsible for the logarithmic instabilities and the restoration of particle-hole symmetry close to the Fermi surface.

Precipitation in small droplets involving emulsions, microemulsions or vesicles is important for Producing multicomponent ceramics and nanoparticles. Because of the random nature of nucleation and the small number of particles in a droplet, the use of a deterministic population balance equation for predicting the number density of particles may lead to erroneous results even for evaluating the mean behavior of such systems. A comparison between the predictions made through stochastic simulation and deterministic population balance involving small droplets has been made for two simple systems, one involving crystallization and the other a single-component precipitation. The two approaches have been found to yield quite different results under a variety of conditions. Contrary to expectation, the smallness of the population alone does not cause these deviations. Thus, if fluctuation in supersaturation is negligible, the population balance and simulation predictions concur. However, for large fluctuations in supersaturation, the predictions differ significantly, indicating the need to take the stochastic nature of the phenomenon into account. This paper describes the stochastic treatment of populations, which involves a sequence of so-called product density equations and forms an appropriate framework for handling small systems.

Time evolution of mean-squared displacement based on molecular dynamics for a variety of adsorbate-zeolite systems is reported. Transition from ballistic to diffusive behavior is observed for all the systems. The transition times are found to be system dependent and show different types of dependence on temperature. Model calculations on a one-dimensional system are carried out which show that the characteristic length and transition times are dependent on the distance between the barriers, their heights, and temperature. In light of these findings, it is shown that it is possible to obtain valuable information about the average potential energy surface sampled under specific external conditions.

A rammed-earth wall is a monolithic construction made by compacting processed soil in progressive layers in a rigid formwork. There is a growing interest in using this low-embodied-carbon building material in buildings. The paper investigates the strength and structural behavior of story-high cement-stabilized rammed-earth (CSRE) walls, reviews literature on the strength of CSRE, and discusses results of the compressive strength of CSRE prisms, wallettes, and story-high walls. The strength of the story-high wall was compared with the strength of wallettes and prisms. There is a nearly 30% reduction in strength as the height-to-thickness ratio increases from about 5 to 20. The ultimate compressive strength of CSRE walls predicted using the tangent modulus theory is in close agreement with the experimental values. The shear failures noticed in the story-high walls resemble the shear failures of short-height prism and wallette specimens. The paper ends with a discussion of structural design and characteristic compressive strength of CSRE walls. DOI: 10.1061/(ASCE)MT.1943-5533.0000155. (C) 2011 American Society of Civil Engineers.
