A new biobased composite was developed by adding soy flour (SF) to polypropylene (PP). This composite shows an enhanced tensile strength and modulus but decrease in elongation at break. The compatibilizer (coupling agent) appears to have a synergistic effect on tensile strength. The presence of the compatibilizer improves the dispersion of SF in the PP matrix. The addition of glycerol plasticizer to the composite improves the processability resulting in improved performance, as compared to composites without glycerol plasticizer. The optimal compatibilizer content appears to be 6%.

A new approach based on finite difference method, is proposed for the simulation of electrical conditions in a dc energized wire-duct electrostatic precipitator with and without dust loading. Simulated voltage-curren characteristics with and without dust loading were compared with the measured characteristics for analyzing the performance of a precipitator. The simple finite difference method gives sufficiently accurate results with reduced mesh size. The results for dust free simulation were validated with published experimental data. Further measurements were conducted at a thermal power plant in India and the results compares well with the measured ones.

Thin films of Cd1−xMnxS (0<=x<=0.5) were deposited on glass substrates by thermal evaporation. All the films were deposited at 300 K and annealed at 373, 473, and 573 K for 1 h in a high vacuum in the range 10−4 Pa. The as-deposited and the annealed films were characterized for composition, structure, and microstructure by using energy-dispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The electrical properties were studied by Hall effect measurement. Electrical conductivity was studied in the temperature range 190–450 K. AFM studies showed that all the films were in nanocrystalline form with grain size varying in the range between 36 and 82 nm. Grain size studies showed a definite increase with annealing temperature. All the films exhibited wurtzite structure of the host material. The lattice parameter varied linearly with composition, following Vegard's law in the entire composition range. Grain size, electrical conductivity, Hall mobility, carrier concentration, and activation energy varied, exhibiting either maxima or minima at x=0.3.

Investigations on the electrical switching behavior and thermal studies using Alternating Differential Scanning Calorimetry have been undertaken on bulk, melt-quenched Ge22Te78-,Is (3 <= x <= 10) chalcohalide glasses. All the glasses studied have been found to exhibit memory-type electrical switching. The threshold voltages of Ge22Te78-I-x(x) glasses have been found to increase with the addition of iodine and the composition dependence of threshold voltages of Ge22Te78-xIx glasses exhibits a cusp at 5 at.% of iodine. Also, the variation with composition of the glass transition temperature (Tg) of Ge22Te78-I-x(x) glasses, exhibits a broad hump around this composition. Based on the present results, the composition x = 5 has been identified as the inverse rigidity percolation threshold at which Ge22Te78-I-x(x) glassy system exhibits a change from a stressed rigid amorphous solid to a flexible polymeric glass. Further, a sharp minimum is seen in the composition dependence of non-reversing enthalpy (Delta H-nr) of Ge22Te78-I-x(x) glasses at x = 5, which is suggestive of a thermally reversing window at this composition. Transparent glasses and glass nano crystal composites (GNCs) of various compositions in the system (100 - x)Li2B4O7-x (BaO-Bi2O3-Nb2O5) (where x = 10, 20, and 30 in molar ratio) were fabricated via splat-quenching technique. The glassy nature of the as quenched samples was established by differential thermal analyses. X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) studies confirmed the formation of layered perovskite BBN via a fluorite like phase. TEM studies revealed the presence of 10 nm sized spherical crystallites of fluorite like BaBi2Nb2O9 phase in the glassy matrix of Li2B4O7 (LBO). The influence of composition on the dielectric and the optical properties (transmission, optical band gap) of these samples has been investigated. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Peanut agglutinin is a homotetrameric nonglycosylated protein. The protein has a unique open quaternary structure. Molecular dynamics simulations have been employed follow the atomistic details of its unfolding at different temperatures. The early events of the deoligomerization of the protein have been elucidated in the present study. Simulation trajectories of the monomer as well as those of the tetramer have been compared and the tetramer is found to be substantially more stable than its monomeric counterpart. The tetramer shows retention of most of its.. secondary structure but considerable loss of the tertiary structure at high temperature. e generation of a This observation impies the molten globule-like intermediate in the later stages of deoligomerization. The quaternary structure of the protein has weakened to a large extent, but none of the subunits are separated. In addition, the importance of the metal-binding to the stability of the protein structure has also been investigated. Binding of the metal ions not only enhances the local stability of the metal-ion binding loop, but also imparts a global stability to the overall structure. The dynamics of different interfaces vary significantly as probed through interface clusters. The differences are substantially enhanced at higher temperatures. The dynamics and the stability of the interfaces have been captured mainly by cluster analysis, which has provided detailed information on the thermal deoligomerization of the protein.

The insulation in a dc cable is subjected to both thermal and electric stress at the same time. While the electric stress is generic to the cable, the temperature rise in the insulation is, by and large, due to the Ohmic losses in the conductor. The consequence of this synergic effect is to reduce the maximum operating voltage and causes a premature failure of the cable. The authors examine this subject in some detail and propose a comprehensive theoretical formulation relating the maximum thermal voltage (MTV) to the physical and geometrical parameters of the insulation. The heat flow patterns and boundary conditions considered by the authors here and those found in earlier literature are provided. The MTV of a dc cable is shown to be a function of the load current apart from the resistance of the insulation. The results obtained using the expressions, developed by the authors, are compared with relevant results published in the literature and found to be in close conformity.

Electrical switching and differential scanning calorimetric studies are undertaken on bulk As20Te80-xGax glasses, to elucidate the network topological thresholds. It is found that these glasses exhibit a single glass transition (T-g) and two crystallization reactions (T-cl & T-c2) upon heating. It is also found that there is only a marginal change in T-g with the addition of up to about 10% of Ga; around this composition an increase is seen in 7, which culminates in a local maximum around x = 15. The decrease exhibited in T, beyond this composition, leads to a local minimum at x = 17.5. Further, the As20Te80-xGax glasses are found to exhibit memory type electrical switching. The switching voltages (VT) increase with the increase in gallium content and a local maximum is seen in V-tau around x = 15. VT is found to decrease with x thereafter, exhibiting a local minimum around x = 17.5. The composition dependence of T-cl is found to be very similar to that of V-T of As20Te80-xGax glasses. Based on the present results, it is proposed that the composition x = 15 and x = 17.5 correspond to the rigidity percolation and chemical thresholds, respectively, of As20Te80-xGax glasses. Tin monosulfide (SnS) films with varying distance between the source and substrate (DSS) were prepared by the thermal evaporation technique at a temperature of 300 degrees C to investigate the effect of the DSS on the physical properties. The physical properties of the as-deposited films are strongly influenced by the variation of DSS. The thickness, Sn to S at.% ratio, grain size, and root mean square (rms) roughness of the films decreased with the increase of DSS. The films grown at DSS = 10 and 15 cm exhibited nearly single-crystalline nature with low electrical resistivity. From Hall-effect measurements, it is observed that the films grown at DSS <= 15 cm have p-type conduction and the films grown at higher distances have n-type conduction due to the variation of the Sn/S ratio. The films grown at DSS = 15 cm showed higher optical band gap of 1.36 eV as compared with the films grown at other distances. The effect of the DSS on the physical properties of SnS films is discussed and reported.

Two coordination polymers [Ni(ipt)(dap)(2)](n) (1) and [Cu(ipt)(dap)H2O](n) center dot nH(2)O (2) with an overall one-dimensional arrangement and having isophthalate (ipt) as bridging moieties and chelating 1,3-diaminopropane (dap) as structure modulating units have been prepared and characterized by crystallographic, spectroscopic and thermo-analytical studies. Both have an overall one-dimensional zig-zag nature but with a distorted octahedral NiN4O2 chromophore for 1 and a distorted square pyramidal CuN2O3 chromophore for 2. Even though the ipt units are acting as bridging units through mono-dentatively coordinating carboxylate functions in both polymers, compound 1 has the carboxylate oxygen linkages at the trans positions, while in 2 the oxygen linkages occur at the cis positions leading to a different type of zig-zag arrangement. Relevant spectral and bonding parameters also could be evaluated for the compounds using UV-Vis and EPR spectra. Thermal stability and possible structural modifications on thermal treatment of the compounds were also investigated and the relevant thermodynamic and kinetic parameters evaluated from the thermal data. Mo(Si1-xAlx)(2) compositions (x = 0-0.1) have been prepared by a modified SHS route under uniaxial hydrostatic pressure. Oxidation studies carried out by thermal analysis and sheet resistivity indicate an improvement in the low temperature (700-900 K) oxidation resistance with increasing aluminum addition. Dilatometric results show a decrease in the a value up to x = 0.05 substitution. With the aluminum substitution, both thermal expansion coefficient and thermal conductivity show decrease in their values except in the biphasic region. The x = 0.05 composition containing both C11(b) and C40 phases is a promising material for high temperature thermal barrier coating as it shows higher oxidation resistance and a similar K/alpha value as compared to pure MoSi, (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. The layered double hydroxides (LDHs) of Co with trivalent cations decompose irreversibly to yield oxides with the spinel structure. Spinel formation is aided by the oxidation of Co(II) to Co(III) in the ambient atmosphere. When the decomposition is carried out under N-2, the oxidation of Co(II) is suppressed, and the resulting oxide has the rock salt structure. Thus, the Co-Al-CO32-/Cl- LDHs yield oxides of the type Co1- Al-x(2x/3)rectangle O-x/3, which are highly metastable, given the large defect concentration. This defect oxide rapidly reverts back to the original hydroxide on soaking in a Na2CO3 solution. Interlayer NO3- anions, on the other hand, decompose generating a highly oxidizing atmosphere, whereby the Co-Al-NO3- LDH decomposes to form the spinel phase even in a N-2 atmosphere. The oxide with the defect rock salt structure formed by the thermal decomposition of the Co-Fe-CO32- LDH under N2, on soaking in a Na2CO3 solution, follows a different kinetic pathway and undergoes a solution transformation into the inverse spinel Co(Co, Fe)(2)O-4. Fe3+ has a low octahedral crystal field stabilization energy and therefore prefers the tetrahedral coordination offered by the structure of the inverse spinel rather than the octahedral coordination of the parent LDH. Similar considerations do not hold in the case of Ga- and In-containing LDHs, given the considerable barriers to the diffusion of M3+ (M=Ga, In) from octahedral to tetrahedral sites owing to their large size. Consequently, the In-containing oxide residue reverts back to the parent hydroxide, whereas this reconstruction is partial in the case of the Ga-containing oxide. These studies show that the reversible thermal behavior offers a competing kinetic pathway to spinel formation. Suppression of the latter induces the reversible behavior in an LDH that otherwise decomposes irreversibly to the spinel.

In this paper we address the fundamental issue of temperature fluctuation during the thermal denaturation (or the unzipping of the two strands on heating) of double stranded (ds) DNA. From our experiments we observe the presence of extremely high thermal fluctuations during DNA denaturation. This thermal fluctuation is several orders higher than the thermal fluctuation at temperatures away from the denaturation temperature range. This fluctuation is absent in single stranded (ss) DNA. The magnitude of fluctuation is much higher in heteropolymeric DNA and is almost absent in short homopolymeric DNA fragments. The temperature range over which the denaturation occurs (i.e., over which the thermal fluctuation is large) depends on the length of the DNA and is largest for the longest DNA.

Lignin was graft copolymerized with methyl methacrylate using manganic pyrophosphate as initiator. This modified lignin was then blended (up to 50 wt%) with low density polyethylene (LDPE) using a small quantity of poly[ethylene-co-(glycidyl methacrylate)] (PEGMA) compatibilizer. The mechanical properties of the blend were substantially improved by using modified lignin in contrast to untreated lignin. Differential scanning calorimetry studies showed loss of crystallinity of the LDPE phase owing to the interaction between the blend components. Thermogravimetric analysis showed higher thermal stability of modified lignin in the domain of blend processing. This suggested that there is scope for useful utilization of lignin, which could also lead to the development of eco-friendly products. (c) 2005 Society of Chemical Industry.
