The ion energy distribution of inductively coupled plasma ion source for focused ion beam application is measured using a four grid retarding field energy analyzer. Without using any Faraday shield, ion energy spread is found to be 50 eV or more. Moreover, the ion energy distribution is found to have double peaks showing that the power coupling to the plasma is not purely inductive, but a strong parasitic capacitive coupling is also present. By optimizing the various source parameters and Faraday shield, ion energy distribution having a single peak, well separated from zero energy and with ion energy spread of 4 eV is achieved. A novel plasma chamber, with proper Faraday shield is designed to ignite the plasma at low RF powers which otherwise would require 300-400 W of RF power. Optimization of various parameters of the ion source to achieve ions with very low energy spread and the experimental results are presented in this article. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. A systematic study of Ar ion implantation in cupric oxide films has been reported. Oriented CuO films were deposited by pulsed excimer laser ablation technique on (1 0 0) YSZ substrates. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra showed the highly oriented nature of the deposited CuO films. The films were subjected to ion bombardment for studies of damage formation, Implantations were carried out using 100 keV Arf over a dose range between 5 x 10(12) and 5 x 10(15) ions/cm(2). The as-deposited and ion beam processed samples were characterized by XRD technique and resistance versus temperature (R-T) measurements. The activation energies for electrical conduction were found from In [R] versus 1/T curves. Defects play an important role in the conduction mechanism in the implanted samples. The conductivity of the film increases, and the corresponding activation energy decreases with respect to the dose value.

The lead based ferroelectric PbZr0.53Ti0.47O3 (PZT), (Pb0.90La0.10)TiO3 (PLT10) and (Pb0.80La0.20)TiO3 (PLT20) thin films, prepared by pulsed laser ablation technique, were studied for their response to the 70 MeV oxygen ion irradiation. The dielectric analysis, capacitance-voltage (C- V) and DC leakage current measurements were performed before and after the irradiation to high-energy oxygen ions. The irradiation produced considerable changes in the dielectric, C-V, leakage characteristics and induced some amount of amorphization. The PZT films showed partial recrystallization after a thermal annealing at 400 degrees C for 10 min. The phase transition temperature [T-c] of PLT20 increased from 115 degrees C to 120 degrees C. The DC conductivity measurements showed a shift in the onset of non-linear conduction region. The current density decreased by two orders of magnitude after irradiation. After annealing the irradiated films at a temperature of 400 degrees C for 10 min, the films partially regained the dielectric and electrical properties. The results are discussed in terms of the irradiation-induced amorphization, the pinning of the ferroelectric domains by trapped charges and the thermal annealing of the defects generated during the irradiation. A compact, high brightness 13.56 MHz inductively coupled plasma ion source without any axial or radial multicusp magnetic fields is designed for the production of a focused ion beam. Argon ion current of density more than 30 mA/cm(2) at 4 kV potential is extracted from this ion source and is characterized by measuring the ion energy spread and brightness. Ion energy spread is measured by a variable-focusing retarding field energy analyzer that minimizes the errors due t divergence of ion beam inside the analyzer. Brightness of the ion beam is determined from the emittance measured by a fully automated and locally developed electrostatic sweep scanner. By optimizing various ion source parameters such as RF power, gas pressure and Faraday shield, ion beams with energy spread of less than 5 eV and brightness of 7100 Am(-2)sr(-1)eV(-1) have been produced. Here, we briefly report the details of the ion source, measurement and optimization of energy spread and brightness of the ion beam. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Optical and structural properties of reactive ion beam sputter deposited CeO2 films as a function of oxygen partial pressures (P-O2) and substrate temperatures (T-s) have been investigated. The films deposited at ambient temperature with P-O2 of 0.01 Pa have shown a refractive index of 2.36 which increased to 2.44 at 400 degrees C. Refractive index and extinction coefficient are sensitive up to a T-s of similar to 200 degrees C. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) have been used to characterise the structural properties. A preferential orientation of (220) was observed up to a T-s of 200 degrees C and it changed to (200) at 400 degrees C: and above. Raman line broadening, peak shift and XRD broadening indicate the formation of nanocrystalline phase for the films deposited up to a substrate temperature of 300 degrees C. However, crystallinity of the films were better for T-s values above 300 degrees C. In general both optical and structural properties were unusual compared to the films deposited by conventional electron beam evaporation, but were similar in some aspects to those deposited by ion-assisted deposition. Apart from thermal effects, this behavior is also attributed to the bombardment of backscattered ions/neutrals on the growing film as well as the higher kinetic energy of the condensing species, together resulting in increased packing density. The flux tube model offers a pictorial description of what happens during the deconfinement phase transition in QCD. The three-point vertices of a flux tube network lead to formation of baryons upon hadronization. Therefore, correlations in the baryon number distribution at the last scattering surface are related to the preceding pattern of the flux tube vertices in the quark-gluon plasma, and provide a signature of the nearby deconfinement phase transition. I discuss the nature of the expected signal, and how to extract it from the experimental data for heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC.

We report the synthesis of thin films of B–C–N and C–N deposited by N+ ion-beam-assisted pulsed laser deposition (IBPLD) technique on glass substrates at different temperatures. We compare these films with the thin films of boron carbide synthesized by pulsed laser deposition without the assistance of ion-beam. Electron diffraction experiments in the transmission electron microscope shows that the vapor quenched regions of all films deposited at room temperature are amorphous. In addition, shown for the first time is the evidence of laser melting and subsequent rapid solidification of B4C melt in the form of micrometer- and submicrometer-size round particulates on the respective films. It is possible to amorphize B4C melt droplets of submicrometer sizes. Solidification morphologies of micrometer-size droplets show dispersion of nanocrystallites of B4C in amorphous matrix within the droplets. We were unable to synthesize cubic carbon nitride using the current technique. However, the formation of nanocrystalline turbostratic carbo- and boron carbo-nitrides were possible by IBPLD on substrate at elevated temperature and not at room temperature. Turbostraticity relaxes the lattice spacings locally in the nanometric hexagonal graphite in C–N film deposited at 600 °C leading to large broadening of diffraction rings.

The ferroelectric Pb(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O-3 (PZT) and SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT) thin films were prepared by laser ablation technique. The dielectric analysis, capacitance-voltage, ferroelectric hysteresis and DC leakage current measurements were performed before and after 50 MeV Li3+ ion irradiation. In both thin films, the irradiation produced some amount of amorphisation, considerable degradation in the ferroelectric properties and change in DC conductivity. On irradiation of these thin films, the phase transition temperature [T-c] of PZT decreased considerably from 628 to 508 K, while SBT exhibited a broad and diffuse transition with its T-c decreased from 573 to 548 K. The capacitance-voltage curve at 100 kHz showed a double butterfly loop with a large decrease in the capacitance and switching voltage. There was decrease in the ferroelectric hysteresis loop, remanant polarisation and coercive field. After annealing at a temperature of 673 K for 10 min while PZT partially regained the ferroelectric properties, while SBT did not. The DC conductivity measurements showed a shift in the onset of non-linear conduction region in irradiated SBT. The degradation of ferroelectric properties of the irradiated thin films is attributed to the irradiation-induced partial amorphization and the pinning of the ferroelectric domains by trapped charges. The regaining of properties after annealing is attributed to the thermal annealing of the defects generated during the irradiation. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Tungsten incorporated diamond like carbon (W-DLC) nanocomposite thin films with variable fractions of tungsten were deposited by using reactive biased target ion beam deposition technique. The influence of tungsten incorporation on the microstructure, surface topography, mechanical and tribological properties of the DLC were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy. Atomic force microscope (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nano-indentation and nano-scratch tests. The amount of W in films gets increases with increasing target bias voltage and most of the incorporated W reacts with carbon to form WC nanoclusters. Using TEM and FFT pattern, it was found that spherical shaped WC nanoclusters were uniformly dispersed in the DLC matrix and attains hexagonal (W2C) crystalline structure at higher W concentration. On the other hand, the incorporation of tungsten led to increase the formation of C-sp(2) hybridized bonding in DLC network and which is reflected in the hardness and elastic modulus of W-DLC films. Moreover, W-DLC films show very low friction coefficient and increased adhesion to the substrate than the DLC film, which could be closely related to its unique nanostructure of the W incorporated thin films. CaSiO3:Dy3+ (1-5 mol%) nanophosphors have been prepared by a low temperature solution combustion method. The structural and luminescence (ionoluminescence; IL and photoluminescence; PL) studies have been carried out for pristine and ion irradiated samples. The XRD patterns of pristine sample show a prominent peak at (320) for the monoclinic structure of beta-CaSiO3. Upon ion irradiation, the intensity of the prominent peak is decreased at the fluence of 7.81 x 10(12) ions cm(-2) and at higher fluence of 15.62 x 10(12) ions cm(-2), the prominent peak completely vanishes. The decrease in peak intensity might be due to the stress induced point defects. On-line IL and in situ PL studies have been carried out on pelletized samples bombarded with 100 MeV Si7+ ions with fluences in the range (7.81-15.62) x 10(12) ions cm(-2). The characteristic emission peaks at 481,574, 664 and 754 nm recorded in both IL and PL are attributed to the luminescence centers activated by Dy3+ ions. It is found that IL and PL emissions intensity decreases with increase in Si7+ ion fluence. The decrease in intensity can be due to the destruction of Si-O-Si and O-Si-O type species present on the surface of the sample. FTIR studies also confirm the Si-O-Si and O-Si-O type species observed to be sensitive for swift heavy ion (SHI) irradiated samples. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Structural, iono (IL) and thermoluminescence (TL) studies of Zn2SiO4:Sm3+ (1-5 mol%) nanophosphor bombarded with swift heavy ions in the fluence range 3.91 x 10(12)-21.48 x 10(12) cm(-2) have been carried out. The average crystallite sizes for pristine and ion irradiated for 3.91 x 10(12) ions cm(-2) and 21.48 x 10(12) ions cm(-2) were found to be 34, 26 and 20 nm. With increase of ion fluence, the intensity of XRD peaks decreases and FWHM increases. The peak broadening indicates the stress induced point/clusters defects produced due to heavy ion irradiation. IL studies were carried out for different Sm3+ concentrations in Zn2SiO4 by irradiating with ion fluence of 15.62 x 10(12) ions cm(-2). The characteristic emission peaks at similar to 562, 599, 646 and 701 nm were recorded by exciting Si7+ ions in the fluence range 3.91 x 10(12)-21.48 x 10(12) ions cm(-2). These peaks were attributed to (4)G(5/2)-> H-6(5/2) (562 nm), (4)G(5/2)-> H-6(7/2) (599 nm), (4)G(5/2)-> H-6(9/2) (646 nm), and (4)G(5/2)-> H-6(5/2) (701 nm) transitions of Sm3+. The highest emission was recorded at 3 mol% of Sm3+ doped Zn2SiO4. TL studies were carried out for 3 mol% Sm3+ concentration in the fluence range 3.91 x 10(12)-21.48 x 10(12) ions cm(-2). Two U glow peaks at 152 and 223 degrees C were recorded. The kinetic parameters (E, b, and s), were estimated using Chen's peak shape method. Simple glow curve structure (223 degrees C), highly resistive, increase in TL. intensity up to 19.53 x 10(12) ions cm(-2), simple trap distribution makes Zn2SiO4:Sm3+ (3 mol%) phosphor highly useful in radiation dosimetry.
Surface modifications in single crystal surfaces of YBa2Cu3O7-delta upon high energy ion irradiation
Resumo:
Atomic force microscopy investigations on swift heavy ion (200 MeV An) irradiated surfaces of a high T-c single crystal YBa2Cu3O7-delta are presented. Results obtained revealed an ion-induced erosion/sputtering clearly confirming our earlier observation on grain boundary dominated thin films. Apart from sputtering, notable effects were seen with many defect structures like dikes/hillocks surrounded by craters, dikes, holes, pearl like structures and ripple formation of sub-micron undulations, all in one crystal. Results are discussed in the light of co-operative phenomena of material re-distribution mechanism related to mass transfer and crater formations.

The ferroelectric Pb(Zr0.48Ti0.52)O-3 (PZT) thin films prepared by the pulsed laser deposition technique were studied for their response to high energy lithium ion irradiation through impedance spectroscopy. The Debye peaks, observed in the impedance and modulus plots of irradiatedfilms, shifts towards higher frequencies compared to those of unirradiated films. This is equivalent to the trend observed with increase in temperature in the unirradiated films due to the dielectric relaxation. The irradiated films showed a decrease in the grain resistance compared to the unirradiated films. The activation energy of dielectric relaxation increases from 1.25 eV of unirradiated film to 1.62 eV of irradiated film. The observed modifications in the irradiated film were ascribed to the modifications in the grain structure due to the high value of electronic energy loss.

This paper investigates the loss of high mass ions due to their initial thermal energy in ion trap mass analyzers. It provides an analytical expression for estimating the percentage loss of ions of a given mass at a particular temperature, in a trap operating under a predetermined set of conditions. The expression we developed can be used to study the loss of ions due to its initial thermal energy in traps which have nonlinear fields as well as those which have linear fields. The expression for the percentage of ions lost is shown to be a function of the temperature of the ensemble of ions, ion mass and ion escape velocity. An analytical expression for the escape velocity has also been derived in terms of the trapping field, drive frequency and ion mass. Because the trapping field is determined by trap design parameters and operating conditions, it has been possible to study the influence of these parameters on ion loss. The parameters investigated include ion temperature, magnitude of the initial potential applied to the ring electrode (which determines the low mass cut-off), trap size, dimensions of apertures in the endcap electrodes and RF drive frequency. Our studies demonstrate that ion loss due to initial thermal energy increases with increase in mass and that, in the traps investigated, ion escape occurs in the radial direction. Reduction in the loss of high mass ions is favoured by lower ion temperatures, increasing low mass cut-off, increasing trap size, and higher RF drive frequencies. However, dimensions of the apertures in the endcap electrodes do not influence ion loss in the range of aperture sizes considered. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Role of swift heavy ion irradiation on the modification of transport and structural properties of high temperature superconductors is studied. Good quality YBCO thin films prepared by high pressure oxygen sputtering and laser ablation were used in this investigation. Resistivity and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were mainly used to probe superconducting and microstructural modifications resulted from the irradiation of high energy and heavy ions like 100 MeV oxygen and 200 MeV silver. Radiation induced sputtering or erosion is likely to be a major disastrous component of such high energy irradiation that could be powerful in masking phase coherence effects, atleast in grain boundaries. The extent of damage/nature of defects other than columnar defects produced by swift heavy ions is discussed in the light of AFM measurements. The effect of high energy oxygen ion irradiation is anomalous. A clear annealing effect at higher doses is seen. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
