The mechanism of sub-microscopic precipitation in an Al-Zn-Mg alloy selected for its maximum response to ageing has been studied by a standardized oxide-replica technique in a 100 kV. Philips Electron Microscope. Contrary to earlier conclusions, examination of the oxide replicas has been shown to reveal details of the precipitation process almost as clearly as the thin-foil transmission technique. The reported formation of spherical Guinier-Preston zones followed by the development of a Widmanstaetten pattern of precipitated platelets has been confirmed. The zones have, however, been shown to grow into the platelets and not to dissolve in the matrix as reported earlier. The precipitation process has been correlated with the Hardness/Ageing Time curve and the structure of the precipitates has also been discussed.

The Turkevich method for synthesizing gold nanoparticles, using sodium citrate as the reducing agent, is renowned for its ability to produce biocompatible colloids with mean size >10 nm. Here we show that monodisperse gold nanoparticles in the 5-10 nm size range can be synthesized by simply reversing the order of addition of reactants, i.e. adding chloroauric acid to citrate solution. Kinetic studies and electron microscopic characterization revealed that the reactivity of chloroauric acid, initial molar ratio of citrate to chloroauric acid (MR), and reaction mixture pH play an important role in producing monodisperse gold nanoparticles. Reversing the order of addition also enhanced the stabilization of nanoparticles at high MR values. Remarkably, the system exhibits a `memory' of the order of addition, even when the timescale of mixing is much shorter than the timescale of synthesis. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

We present a technique for an all-digital on-chip delay measurement system to measure the skews in a clock distribution network. It uses the principle of sub-sampling. Measurements from a prototype fabricated in a 65 nm industrial process, indicate the ability to measure delays with a resolution of 0.5ps and a DNL of 1.2 ps.

A lattice formahsm using "spin variables" is employed to analyse multi-state models for the adsorption of neutral dipoles. In particular, a spin-1/2 (two-state) model incorporating permanent and reduced dipole moments of the solvent and the organic adsorbate, substrate interactions, and &screteness of charge effects is analysed The resulting Generalized Islng Hamaltonian is solved under mean field approximation (MFA) in order to derive the adsorption isotherm for organic molecules A few spin-1 (three-state) models are also analysed under MFA to describe the competitive adsorption of multi-state solvent and organic dipoles, and the appropriate equilibrium relations are derived The unification and isomorphism existing at the Hamlltonlan level for several diverse realizations, such as adsorption of ions and solvent/orgamc molecules, is indicated The possibility of analysing phase transitions using this generalized approach is briefly indicated.

High resolution electron microscopic (HREM) investigation of potassiumbeta-alumina and the related gallate and ferrite has revealed that whereas the aluminate and gallate are highly disordered, consisting of random sequence ofbeta andbetaPrime units, the ferrite is more ordered. The aluminate and gallate are sensitive to electron beam irradiation exhibiting beam-induced damage similar to sodiumbetaPrime-alumina. Significantly, the ferrite is beamstable, the difference in behaviour amongst these related oxides arising from the different mechanisms by which alkali metal nonstoichiometry is accommodated. Barium hexaaluminate and hexaferrite are both highly ordered; specimens prepared by the barium borate flux method exhibit a new radic3a×radic3a superstructure of the hexagonal magnetoplumbite cell.

The discovery of a solid exhibiting m 3 5 point group symmetry by Shechtman et. al. (l) in a rapidly solidified Al-14at%Mn alloy has activated intensive studies of a new class of solids, termed as quasicrystals (2). While the original discovery reported the existence of quasicrystals in AI-Mn. AI-Fe and AI-Cr alloys, subsequent work has revealed their existence in Mg-Zn-Al(3,4), Mg-A]-Cu(5), AI-Mn-Si(6) and Ti-Ni-V(7) alloys (Table l).

Two- and three-state models for the adsorption of organic compounds at the electrodelelectrolyte interface are proposed. Different size requirements, if any, for the neutral molecule and the adsorbing solvent are also considered. It is shown how the empirical, generalised surface layer (GSL) relationship (between the potential difference and the electrode charge) formulated by Damaskin et a / . can be understood at the molecular level.

The phenomenon of adsorption is governed by the various interactions among the constituents of the interface and the forms of adsorption isotherms hold the clue to the nature of the se in teractions. An understanding of this phenomenon may be said to be complete only when the parameters occurring in such expres - sions for isotherms are interpretable in terms of molecular/electronic interactions. This objective viz. expressing the composition of the isotherm parameters through a microscopic modelling is by no means a simple one. Such a task is particularly made difficult in the case of charged interfaces where idealisation is difficult to make and, when made, not so easy to justify.

The rheological properties of polymer melts and other complex macromolecular fluids are often successfully modeled by phenomenological constitutive equations containing fractional differential operators. We suggest a molecular basis for such fractional equations in terms of the generalized Langevin equation (GLE) that underlies the renormalized Rouse model developed by Schweizer [J. Chem. Phys. 91, 5802 (1989)]. The GLE describes the dynamics of the segments of a tagged chain under the action of random forces originating in the fast fluctuations of the surrounding polymer matrix. By representing these random forces as fractional Gaussian noise, and transforming the GLE into an equivalent diffusion equation for the density of the tagged chain segments, we obtain an analytical expression for the dynamic shear relaxation modulus G(t), which we then show decays as a power law in time. This power-law relaxation is the root of fractional viscoelastic behavior.

The article peruses the frictional response of an important metal working lubricant additive, sodium oleate. Frictional force microscopy is used to track the response of molecules self-assembled on a steel substrate of 3–4 nm roughness at 0% relative humidity. The friction-normal load characteristic emerges as bell-shaped, where the peak friction and normal load at peak friction are both sensitive to substrate roughness. The frictional response at loads lower than that associated with the peak friction is path reversible while at higher loads the loading and unloading paths are different. We suggest that a new low-friction interface material is created when the normal loads are high.

In sub-humid South India, recent studies have shown that black soil areas (Vertisols and vertic Intergrades), located on flat valley bottoms, have been rejuvenated through the incision of streambeds, inducing changes in the pedoclimate and soil transformation. Joint pedological, geochemical and geophysical investigations were performed in order to better understand the ongoing processes and their contribution to the chemistry of local rivers. The seasonal rainfall causes cycles of oxidation and reduction in a perched watertable at the base of the black soil, while the reduced solutions are exported through a loamy sand network. This framework favours a ferrolysis process, which causes low base saturation and protonation of clay, leading to the weathering of 2:1 then 1:1 clay minerals. Maximum weathering conditions occur at the very end of the wet season, just before disappearance of the perched watertable. Therefore, the by-products of soil transformation are partially drained off and calcareous nodules, then further downslope, amorphous silica precipitate upon soil dehydration. The ferrolysed area is fringing the drainage system indicating that its development has been induced by the streambed incision. The distribution of C-14 ages of CaCO3 nodules suggests that the ferrolysis process started during the late Holocene, only about 2 kyr B.P. at the studied site and about 5 kyr B.P. at the watershed outlet. The results of this study are applied to an assessment of the physical erosion rate (4.8x10(-3) m/kyr) since the recent reactivation of the erosion process. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Experimental studies are presented to show the effect of thermal stresses on thermal contact conductance (TCC) at low contact pressures. It is observed that in a closed contact assembly, contact pressure acting on the interface changes with the changing temperature of contact members. This change in contact pressure consequently causes variations in the TCC of the junction. A relationship between temperature change and the corresponding magnitude of developed thermal stress in a contact assembly is determined experimentally. Inclusion of a term called temperature dependent load correction factor is suggested in the theoretical model for TCC to make it capable of predicting TCC values more accurately in contact assemblies that experience large temperature fluctuations. This article describes two-component charge-transfer interaction mediated organogels (CT-gels) derived from anthracene carboxamides obtained from 2-amino 2-hydroxymethyl-1,3-propanediol (TRIS), and 2,3-dialkoxyanthracenes as donors, with 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone (TNF) as the common acceptor. We demonstrate the versatility of TNF as an electron acceptor in the formation of these gels. The effect of subtle changes in the donor structure on the gelation ability has been investigated by varying the alkyl chain length in the dialkoxyanthracene donors, and by varying the position of the TRIS substituent in the anthracene carboxamide donors. Distinct differences have been observed in the nature of the CT-gels based on these two kinds of anthracene donors. It has been reported in the literature that 2,3-dialkoxyanthracenes form gels on their own in various aliphatic hydrocarbons and alcohols for linear alkyl chains bearing at least 6mcarbon atoms (C-6). In the present study, it is shown that themCT-complex of these molecules with TNF is able to gel many alcoholic and a few hydrocarbon solvents. Also, in the presence of TNF, the 2,3-dialkoxyanthracenes (C-4-C-5) which were non-gelators on their own at ambient temperatures, form CT-gels in a number of alcohols. The other series of gelators discussed, the anthracene carboxamides, require the mandatory presence of TNF to form gels. This donor-acceptor complex forms gels in various aliphatic alcohols. Interestingly, the formation of these CT-gels requires rapid cooling in most of the cases. Thermal stability studies with both types of CT-gels indicate an optimum stoichiometry of 1 : 1 between the donor and the acceptor. Dynamic rheological experiments reveal these gels as viscoelastic soft materials, with the mechanical strength of these gels depending on the amount of TNF present. This provides a means to tune the strength of the gel by varying the doping concentration of the acceptor.

Electron microscopic investigations have been carried out on superconducting YBa2Cu3 O7−δ, NdBa2Cu3 O7−δ and related oxides. All these orthorhombic oxides exhibit twin domains. Based on high resolution electron microscopy, it is shown that there is no significant change in the structure across the twins. Oxides of the La2−x Sr x (Ba x )CuO4 system do not show twins, but exhibit other types of defects. Twins appear to be characteristic of only the orthorhombic 123 structures.
