A compact, high brightness 13.56 MHz inductively coupled plasma ion source without any axial or radial multicusp magnetic fields is designed for the production of a focused ion beam. Argon ion current of density more than 30 mA/cm(2) at 4 kV potential is extracted from this ion source and is characterized by measuring the ion energy spread and brightness. Ion energy spread is measured by a variable-focusing retarding field energy analyzer that minimizes the errors due t divergence of ion beam inside the analyzer. Brightness of the ion beam is determined from the emittance measured by a fully automated and locally developed electrostatic sweep scanner. By optimizing various ion source parameters such as RF power, gas pressure and Faraday shield, ion beams with energy spread of less than 5 eV and brightness of 7100 Am(-2)sr(-1)eV(-1) have been produced. Here, we briefly report the details of the ion source, measurement and optimization of energy spread and brightness of the ion beam. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The ion energy distribution of inductively coupled plasma ion source for focused ion beam application is measured using a four grid retarding field energy analyzer. Without using any Faraday shield, ion energy spread is found to be 50 eV or more. Moreover, the ion energy distribution is found to have double peaks showing that the power coupling to the plasma is not purely inductive, but a strong parasitic capacitive coupling is also present. By optimizing the various source parameters and Faraday shield, ion energy distribution having a single peak, well separated from zero energy and with ion energy spread of 4 eV is achieved. A novel plasma chamber, with proper Faraday shield is designed to ignite the plasma at low RF powers which otherwise would require 300-400 W of RF power. Optimization of various parameters of the ion source to achieve ions with very low energy spread and the experimental results are presented in this article. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Substrate temperature and ion bombardment during deposition have been observed to modify significantly the optical and structural properties of dielectric thin films. Single‐layer films of CeO2 have been deposited by electron beam evaporation with simultaneous oxygen‐ion bombardment using a Kaufman broad beam ion source and maintaining the substrates at elevated temperature. A systematic study has been made on the influence of (a) substrate temperature in the range ambient to 300 °C, (b) ion energy in the range 300–700 eV, and (c) ion current density 100–220 μA/cm2 on optical properties such as refractive index, extinction coefficient, inhomogeneity, packing density, and structural properties. The refractive index increased with in increase in substrate temperature: ion energy up to 600 eV and ion current density. Homogeneous, absorption free and high index (2.48) films have been obtained at 600 eV, 220 μA/cm2 and at substrate temperature of 300 °C. The packing density of the films was observed to be unity for the same deposition conditions. Substrate temperature with simultaneous ion bombardment modified the structure of the films from highly ordered to fine grain structure.

Indium-tin oxide films have been deposited by reactive electron beam evaporation of ln+Sn alloy both in neutral and ionized oxygen environments. A low-energy ion source (fabricated in-house) has been used. Films deposited with neutral oxygen exhibited very low optical transmittance (5% at 550 nm). Highly transparent (85%) and low-resistivity (5 X 10(-4) Omega cm) films have been deposited in ionized oxygen at ambient substrate temperature. Optical and electrical properties of the films have been studied as a function of deposition parameters. (C) 2002 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

EPR study of the vanadyl ion has been carried out in its paramagnetically dilute form in K2Zn(SO4)2·6H2O and K2Mg(SO4)2·6H2O at room temperature at X-band. The vanadyl ion enters the divalent metal site and preferentially orients itself in the direction of the water molecules forming the octahedron and forms the vanadyl sulfate pentahydrate complex. The g and A tensorscorresponding to the two populous V-O orientations have been analyzed to obtain the principal values and their direction cosines with respect to the crystallographics axes. It is found that the g and A tensor have the same principal frames of reference within the limits of eperimental error. A correlation between the metal-water distance and the populations of the different V-O orientations is observed.

In a three player quantum `Dilemma' game each player takes independent decisions to maximize his/her individual gain. The optimal strategy in the quantum version of this game has a higher payoff compared to its classical counterpart. However, this advantage is lost if the initial qubits provided to the players are from a noisy source. We have experimentally implemented the three player quantum version of the `Dilemma' game as described by Johnson, [N.F. Johnson, Phys. Rev. A 63 (2001) 020302(R)] using nuclear magnetic resonance quantum information processor and have experimentally verified that the payoff of the quantum game for various levels of corruption matches the theoretical payoff. This paper proposes a technique to cause unidirectional ion ejection in a quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer operated in the resonance ejection mode. In this technique a modified auxiliary dipolar excitation signal is applied to the endcap electrodes. This modified signal is a linear combination of two signals. The first signal is the nominal dipolar excitation signal which is applied across the endcap electrodes and the second signal is the second harmonic of the first signal, the amplitude of the second harmonic being larger than that of the fundamental. We have investigated the effect of the following parameters on achieving unidirectional ion ejection: primary signal amplitude, ratio of amplitude of second harmonic to that of primary signal amplitude, different operating points, different scan rates, different mass to charge ratios and different damping constants. In all these simulations unidirectional ejection of destabilized ions has been successfully achieved. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We have designed a four-helix protein that is expected to tetramerize in the membrane to form an ion channel with a structurally well defined pore. A synthetic peptide corresponding to the channel lining helix facilitates ion transport across liposomal membranes and largely helical in membranes. Detailed circular dichroism studies of the peptide in methanol, water and methanal-water mixtures reveal that it is helical in methanol, beta-structured in 97.5% water and a combination of these two structures at intermediate compositions of methanol and water. A fluorescence resonance energy transfer study of the peptide shows that the peptide is monomeric in methanol but undergoes extensive anti-parallel aggregation in aqueous solution.

Quinones and their radical ion intermediates have been much studied by vibrational spectroscopy to understand their structure-function relationships in various biological processes. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of vibrational spectra in the structure-sensitive region of both the naphthoquinone (NQ) and 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone (MQ, menaquinone) radical anions using time-resolved resonance Raman and ab initio studies. Specific vibrational mode assignments have been made to all the vibrational frequencies recorded in the experiment. It is observed that the carbonyl and C-C stretching frequencies show considerable coupling in NQ and MQ radical anions. Further, the asymmetric substitution present in MQ with respect to NQ shows important signatures in the radical anion spectrum. It is concluded that assignments of vibrational frequencies of asymmetrically substituted quinones must take into consideration the influence of asymmetry on structure and reactivity.

Proton spin lattice relaxation (T1) in (CH3)4NCdBr3 at different Larmor frequencies (10, 20 and 30 MHz) has been studied in the temperature range 77 to 400 K. The variations in T1 at high temperature are independent of frequency and show a maximum due to spin rotation- interaction. The other features are interpreted as being due to isotropic tumbling of the tetramethylammonium ion and random reorientation of the CH3 group. The CW spectrum remained narrow up to 77 K and develops a wing structure at low temperatures. This observation is attributed to a possible tunnelling motion of the CH3 group, which has rather low activation energy as demonstrated by the study of T1.

Time-resolved resonance Raman spectroscopy (TR3) has been used to study the effect of solvent polarity on the mechanism and nature of intermediates formed in photoinduced electron-transfer reaction between triplet flouranil ((FL)-F-3) and tetramethylbenzene (TMB). Comparison of the TR3 spectra in polar, nonpolar, and medium polar media suggests that formation of radical anion due to electron-transfer reaction between (FL)-F-3 and TMB is favored in more polar solvents, whereas ketyl radical formation is more favored in less polar media. Compared to ketyl radical, the extent of radical anion formation is negligible in nonpolar solvents. Therefore, it is inferred that in nonpolar media ketyl radical is mainly generated by hydrogen-transfer reaction in the encounter complex between (FL)-F-3 and TMB. In solvents of medium polarity, the ion-pair decay leads to the formation of both ketyl radical and ketyl radical formed from the encounter between triplet state and the donor. Thus, competition between the formation of ketyl radical and ion pair is influenced by the solvent polarity. The nature of the ion pair in different solvent polarity has been investigated from the changes observed in the vibrational frequency of (fluoranil) FL part of the complex.

This paper reports on the liquid-helium-temperature (5 K) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of Cr3+ ions in the nanoparticles of SnO2 synthesized at 600 degrees C with concentrations of 0%, 0.1%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5%, 3.0%, 5.0%, and 10%. Each spectrum may be simulated as overlap of spectra due to four magnetically inequivalent Cr3+ centers characterized by different values of the spin-Hamiltonian parameters. Three of these centers belong to Cr3+ ions in orthorhombic sites, situated near oxygen vacancies, characterized by very large zero-field splitting parameters D and E, presumably due to the presence of nanoparticles in the samples. The fourth EPR spectrum belongs to the Cr3+ ions situated at sites with tetragonal symmetry, substituting for the Sn4+ ion, characterized by a very small value of D. In addition, there appears a ferromagnetic resonance line due to oxygen defects for samples with Cr3+ concentrations of <= 2.5%. Further, in samples with Cr3+ concentrations of >2.5%, there appears an intense and wide EPR line due to the interactions among the Cr3+ ions in the clusters formed due to rather excessive doping; the intensity and width of this line increase with increasing concentration. The Cr3+ EPR spectra observed in these nanopowders very different from those in bulk SnO2 crystals.

For an understanding of the cation selectivity and general binding characteristics of macrotetralide antibiotic nonactin (NA) with ions of different sizes and charges, the nature of binding of divalent cation, Ca2+, to NA and conformation of the NA-Ca2+ complex have been studied by use of 270-MHz proton nuclear magnetic resonance ('H NMR) and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR). The calcium ion induced significantly large changes in chemical shifts for H7, H2, H3, and H5 protons of NA and relatively small changes for H18 and H2' protons. Changes in I3C chemical shift were quite large for carbonyl carbon, C,; it is noteworthy that in the NA-K+ complex, H2 and H2' protons practically do not show any change during complexation and carbonyl carbon shows a much smaller chemical shift change.

Studies on the conformational and binding characteristics of the ionophoric antibiotic X-537A (lasalocid-A)calcium ion complexes have been carried out in deuteriated acetonitrile (CD3 CN) using proton and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (1 H and 13C n.m.r.) spectroscopy. Detailed analysis of the salt-induced chemical shifts at various X-537A to calcium concentration ratios indicated that X-537A forms charged complexes with calcium with 2 : 1 and 1 : 1 stoicheiometries. The conformational model for the complex based on the n.m.r. data showed that the calcium ion is preferentially bound to one end of the molecule, which is binding to three oxygen atoms, the other end (the salicylic acid part) being relatively free. In the 2 : 1 (sandwich) complex, the calcium ion is sandwiched between two X-537A molecules with three oxygen atoms binding to it from each molecule.
