It was proposed earlier [P. L. Sachdev, K. R. C. Nair, and V. G. Tikekar, J. Math. Phys. 27, 1506 (1986); P. L. Sachdev and K. R. C. Nair, ibid. 28, 977 (1987)] that the Euler–Painlevé equations y(d2y/dη2)+a(dy/dη)2 +f(η)y(dy/dη)+g(η)y2+b(dy/dη) +c=0 represent generalized Burgers equations (GBE’s) in the same way as Painlevé equations represent the Korteweg–de Vries type of equations. The earlier studies were carried out in the context of GBE’s with damping and those with spherical and cylindrical symmetry. In the present paper, GBE’s with variable coefficients of viscosity and those with inhomogeneous terms are considered for their possible connection to Euler–Painlevé equations. It is found that the Euler–Painlevé equation, which represents the GBE ut+uβux=(δ/2)g(t)uxx, g(t)=(1+t)n, β>0, has solutions, which either decay or oscillate at η=±∞, only when −1

Electromagnetic characteristics like absorption and electric field distributions of metallic carbon nanotubes are simulated using the discrete dipole approximation. Absorption of electromagnetic energy over a range of frequencies are studied for both parallel and perpendicular incidence of light to the axis of carbon nanotube. Our simulations show 30% enhancement of electric field in the radial direction for nanotubes with axial strain of 0.2 when compared to unstrained nanotubes in case of parallel incidence of light. Simulations for perpendicular incidence of light show an oscillatory behavior for the electric field in the axial direction. Analysis of simulation results indicate potential applications in designing nanostructured antennae and electromagnetic transmission/shielding using CNT-composite.

We address a physically based analytical model of quantum capacitance (C-Q) in a bilayer graphene nanoribbon (BGN) under the application of an external longitudinal static bias. We demonstrate that as the gap (Delta) about the Dirac point increases, a phenomenological population inversion of the carriers in the two sets of subbands occurs. This results in a periodic and composite oscillatory behavior in the C-Q with the channel potential, which also decreases with increase in Delta. We also study the quantum size effects on the C-Q, which signatures heavy spatial oscillations due to the occurrence of van Hove singularities in the total density-of-states function of both the sets of subbands. All the mathematical results as derived in this paper converge to the corresponding well-known solution of graphene under certain limiting conditions and this compatibility is an indirect test of our theoretical formalism. Several surfactant molecules self-assemble in solution to form long, flexible wormlike micelles which get entangled with each other, leading to viscoelastic gel phases. We discuss our recent work on the rheology of such a gel formed in the dilute aqueous solutions of a surfactant CTAT. In the linear rheology regime, the storage modulus G′(ω) and loss modulus G″(ω) have been measured over a wide frequency range. In the nonlinear regime, the shear stress σ shows a plateau as a function of the shear rate math above a certain cutoff shear rate mathc. Under controlled shear rate conditions in the plateau regime, the shear stress and the first normal stress difference show oscillatory time-dependence. The analysis of the measured time series of shear stress and normal stress has been done using several methods incorporating state space reconstruction by embedding of time delay vectors. The analysis shows the existence of a finite correlation dimension and a positive Lyapunov exponent, unambiguously implying that the dynamics of the observed mechanical instability can be described by that of a dynamical system with a strange attractor of dimension varying from 2.4 to 2.9.

We report on exchange bias effects in 10 nm particles of Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 which appear as a result of competing interactions between the ferromagnetic (FM)/anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) phases. The fascinating new observation is the demonstration of the temperature dependence of oscillatory exchange bias (OEB) and is tunable as a function of cooling field strength below the SG phase, may be attributable to the presence of charge/spin density wave (CDW/SDW) in the AFM core of PCMO10. The pronounced training effect is noticed at 5 K from the variation of the EB field as a function of number of field cycles (n) upon the field cooling (FC) process. For n > 1, power-law behavior describes the experimental data well; however, the breakdown of spin configuration model is noticed at n >= 1. Copyright 2012 Author(s). Lamins are intermediate filament proteins of type V constituting a nuclear lamina or filamentous meshwork which lines the nucleoplasmic side of the inner nuclear membrane. This protein mesh provides a supporting scaffold for the nuclear envelope and tethers interphase chromosome to the nuclear periphery. Mutations of mainly A-type lamins are found to be causative for at least 11 human diseases collectively termed as laminopathies majority of which are characterised by aberrant nuclei with altered structural rigidity, deformability and poor mechanotransduction behaviour. But the investigation of viscoelastic behavior of lamin A continues to elude the field. In order to address this problem, we hereby present the very first report on viscoelastic properties of wild type human lamin A and some of its mutants linked with Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) using quantitative rheological measurements. We observed a dramatic strain-softening effect on lamin A network as an outcome of the strain amplitude sweep measurements which could arise from the large compliance of the quasi-cross-links in the network or that of the lamin A rods. In addition, the drastic stiffening of the differential elastic moduli on superposition of rotational and oscillatory shear stress reflect the increase in the stiffness of the laterally associated lamin A rods. These findings present a preliminary insight into distinct biomechanical properties of wild type lamin A protein and its mutants which in turn revealed interesting differences.

The role of elastic Taylor-Couette flow instabilities in the dynamic nonlinear viscoelastic response of an entangled wormlike micellar fluid is studied by large-amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) rheology and in situ polarized light scattering over a wide range of strain and angular frequency values, both above and below the linear crossover point. Well inside the nonlinear regime, higher harmonic decomposition of the resulting stress signal reveals that the normalized third harmonic I-3/I-1 shows a power-law behavior with strain amplitude. In addition, I-3/I-1 and the elastic component of stress amplitude sigma(E)(0) show a very prominent maximum at the strain value where the number density (n(v)) of the Taylor vortices is maximum. A subsequent increase in applied strain (gamma) results in the distortions of the vortices and a concomitant decrease in n(v), accompanied by a sharp drop in I-3 and sigma(E)(0). The peak position of the spatial correlation function of the scattered intensity along the vorticity direction also captures the crossover. Lissajous plots indicate an intracycle strain hardening for the values of gamma corresponding to the peak of I-3, similar to that observed for hard-sphere glasses.

Using an iterative sequence of Wittig olefination, reduction, oxidation, and condensation of an active methylene group to carbonyl, it was possible to prepare a series of organometallic push-pull molecules [(CO)(5)M=C(OCH3)(-CH=CH-)(n)(C5H4)Fe(C5H5), M = W, Cr, n = 1-4] in which ferrocene is the donor element and a Fisher carbene moeity is the acceptor group. The molecular first hyperpolarizability beta was determined by hyper-Rayleigh scattering experiments. The beta values ranged from 110 x 10(-30) to 2420 x 10(-30) esu in acetonitrile, and they are among the highest reported for organometallic molecules so far. Electrochemical measurements are consistent with the push-pull nature of these compounds.

The near-critical behavior of the susceptibility deduced from light-scattering measurements in a ternary liquid mixture of 3-methylpyridine, water, and sodium bromide has been determined. The measurements have been performed in the one-phase region near the lower consolute points of samples with different concentrations of sodium bromide. A crossover from Ising asymptotic behavior to mean-field behavior has been observed. As the concentration of sodium bromide increases, the crossover becomes more pronounced, and the crossover temperature shifts closer to the critical temperature. The data are well described by a model that contains two independent crossover parameters. The crossover of the susceptibility critical exponent γ from its Ising value γ=1.24 to the mean-field value γ=1 is sharp and nonmonotonic. We conclude that there exists an additional length scale in the system due to the presence of the electrolyte which competes with the correlation length of the concentration fluctuations. An analogy with crossover phenomena in polymer solutions and a possible connection with multicritical phenomena is discussed.

We present measurements of the rheology of suspensions of rigid spheres in a semi-dilute polymer solution from experiments of steady and oscillatory shear. For a given value of the shear rate gamma, addition of particles enhances the viscosity and the first normal stress difference but decreases the magnitude of the second normal stress difference. The viscosity eta exhibits a power law variation in gamma for a range of gamma that grows with phi. The first normal stress N-1 is positive and its value grows with phi; it exhibits a clear power law variation for the entire range of gamma that was studied. The second normal stress difference N-2 is negative for the pure polymer solution and much smaller in magnitude than N-1; on addition of particles, its magnitude further decreases, and it appears to change sign at large phi. The behavior of N-1 and N-2 is at odds with the findings of recent studies on particle-loaded dilute polymer solutions and polymer melts. The small-amplitude oscillatory shear experiments show the linear viscoelastic properties, G(') and G('), increasing with phi at a given value of the angular frequency omega. The dynamic viscosity of the suspension differs substantially from its steady shear viscosity, and the difference increases as gamma, omega -> 0.

The thermal properties and electrical-switching behavior of semiconducting chalcogenide SbxSe55-xTe45 (2 <= x <= 9) glasses have been investigated by alternating differential scanning calorimetry and electrical-switching experiments, respectively. The addition of Sb is found to enhance the glass forming tendency and stability as revealed by the decrease in non-reversing enthalpy Delta H-nr. and an increase in the glass-transition width Delta T-g. Further, the glass-transition temperature of SbxSe55-xTe45 glasses, which is a measure of network connectivity, exhibits a subtle increase, suggesting a meager network growth with the addition of Sb. The crystallization temperature is also observed to increase with Sb content. The SbxSe55-xTe45 glasses (2 <= x <= 9) are found to exhibit memory type of electrical switching, which can be attributed to the polymeric nature of network and high devitrifying ability. The metallicity factor has been found to dominate over the network connectivity and rigidity in the compositional dependence of switching voltage. which shows a profound decrease with the addition of Sb.

Manganitelike double perovskite Sr2TiMnO6 (STMO) ceramics fabricated from the powders synthesized via the solid-state reaction route, exhibited dielectric constants as high as similar to 10(5) in the low frequency range (100 Hz-10 kHz) at room temperature. The Maxwell-Wagner type of relaxation mechanism was found to be more appropriate to rationalize such high dielectric constant values akin to that observed in materials such as KxTiyNi(1-x-y)O and CaCu3Ti4O12. The dielectric measurements carried out on the samples with different thicknesses and electrode materials reflected the influence of extrinsic effects. The impedance studies (100 Hz-10 MHz) in the 180-300 K temperature range revealed the presence of two dielectric relaxations corresponding to the grain boundary and the electrode. The dielectric response of the grain boundary was found to be weakly dependent on the dc bias field (up to 11 V/cm). However, owing to the electrode polarization, the applied ac/dc field had significant effect on the low frequency dielectric response. At low temperatures (100-180 K), the dc conductivity of STMO followed a variable range hopping behavior. Above 180 K, it followed the Arrhenius behavior because of the thermally activated conduction process. The bulk conductivity relaxation owing to the localized hopping of charge carriers obeyed the typical universal dielectric response.

This is the first comprehensive report on the calculation of segment size, which signifies the asic unit of flow in long chain plasticizing liquids, by a novel multi-pronged approach. Unlike, low molecular weight liquids and high polymer melts these complex long chain liquids encompasses the least understood domain of the liquid state. In the present work the flow behaviour of carboxylate ester (300-900 Da) has been explained through segmental motion taking into account the independence of molecular weight region. The segment size have been calculated by various methods based on satistical thermodynamics, molecular dynamics and group additivity nd their merits analysed.

Studies on melt rheological properties of blends of low density polyethylene (LDPE) with selected grades of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), which differ widely in their melt flow indices, are reported, The data obtained in a capillary rheometer are presented to describe the effects of blend composition and shear rate on flow behavior index, melt viscosity, and melt elasticity. In general, blending of LLDPE I that has a low melt flow index (2 g/10 min) with LDPE results in a decrease of its melt viscosity, processing temperature, and the tendency of extrudate distortion, depending on blending ratio. A blending ratio around 20-30% LLDPE I seems optimum from the point of view of desirable improvement in processability behavior. On the other hand, blending of LLDPE II that has a high melt flow index (10 g/10 min) with LDPE offers a distinct advantage in increasing the pseudoplasticity of LDPE/LLDPE II blends.
