Longitudinal relaxation due to cross-correlation between dipolar ((HN-1H alpha)-H-1) and amide-proton chemical shift anisotropy (H-1(N) CSA) has been measured in a model tripeptide Piv-(L)Pro-(L)Pro-(L)Phe-OMe. The peptide bond across diproline segment is known to undergo cis/trans isomerization and only in the cis form does the lone Phe amide-proton become involved in intramolecular hydrogen bonding. The strength of the cross correlated relaxation interference is found to be significantly different between cis and trans forms, and this difference is shown as an influence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding on the amide-proton CSA. The crystal structure of tetrakis(cytosine)copper(II) perchlorate dihydrate has been determined. All the hydrogen atoms were obtained from Fourier-difference synthesis. The geometry around. copper is a bicapped octahedron (4 + 2 + 2*). The adjacent cytosine rings are oriented head-to-tail with respect to each other and are roughly at right angles to the co-ordination plane. The exocyclic oxo groups form an interligand, intracomplex hydrogen-bonding network above and below the co-ordination plane with the exocyclic amino groups of alternate cytosine bases. The EPR and electronic spectra are consistent with the retention of the solid-state structure in solution. The steric effect of the C(2)=O group of cytosine is offset by the presence of the intracomplex hydrogen-bonding network. The trend in Ei values of Cu-II-Cu-I couples for 1.4 complexes of cytosine, cytodine, pyridine, 2-methylpyridine and N-methylimidazole suggests that both steric effects and pi-delocalization in imidazole and pyridine ligands and the steric effect of C(2)=O in pyrimidine ligands are important in stabilising Cu-I relative to Cu-II.

This work considers how the properties of hydrogen bonded complexes, X-H center dot center dot center dot Y, are modified by the quantum motion of the shared proton. Using a simple two-diabatic state model Hamiltonian, the analysis of the symmetric case, where the donor (X) and acceptor (Y) have the same proton affinity, is carried out. For quantitative comparisons, a parametrization specific to the O-H center dot center dot center dot O complexes is used. The vibrational energy levels of the one-dimensional ground state adiabatic potential of the model are used to make quantitative comparisons with a vast body of condensed phase data, spanning a donor-acceptor separation (R) range of about 2.4-3.0 angstrom, i.e., from strong to weak hydrogen bonds. The position of the proton (which determines the X-H bond length) and its longitudinal vibrational frequency, along with the isotope effects in both are described quantitatively. An analysis of the secondary geometric isotope effect, using a simple extension of the two-state model, yields an improved agreement of the predicted variation with R of frequency isotope effects. The role of bending modes is also considered: their quantum effects compete with those of the stretching mode for weak to moderate H-bond strengths. In spite of the economy in the parametrization of the model used, it offers key insights into the defining features of H-bonds, and semi-quantitatively captures several trends. The crystal structure determination of the heptapeptide Boc-Val-Ala-Leu-Aib-Val-Ala-Phe-OMe reveals two peptide helices in the asymmetric unit, Crystal parameters are: space group P2(1), a = 10.356(2) Angstrom, b = 19.488(5) Angstrom, c = 23.756(6) Angstrom, beta = 102.25(2)degrees), V = 4685.4 Angstrom(3), Z = 4 and R = 5.7% for 7615 reflections [I>3 sigma(I)]. Both molecules adopt largely alpha-helical conformations with variations at the C-terminus, Helix type Is determined by analysing both 4-->1 and 5-->1 hydrogen-bond interactions and comparison with the results of analysis of protein structures. The presence of two 4-->1 hydrogen-bond interactions, besides four 5-->1 interact ions in both the conformations provides an opportunity to characterize bifurcated hydrogen bonds at high resolution, Comparison of the two helical conformations with related peptide structures suggests that distortions at the C-terminus are more facile than at the N-terminus.

The Zeeman effect of chlorine nuclear quadrupole resonance in polycrystalline samples of 2,6-, 2,5 and 3,5-dichlorophenol has been investigated at room temperature in order to study the effect of hydrogen bonding on the electric field gradient asymmetry parameter n. While the two n.q.r. lines in 3,5-dichlorophenol gave an asymmetry parameter of 10%, those in 2,6- and 2,5-dichlorophenol gave different values of n for the two chlorines. The chlorine atom which is ortho to the OH group and involved in hydrogen bonding (i.e., corresponding to the low frequency line) gave an asymmetry parameter of 0.21 in 2,6-dichlorophenol and 0.17 in 2,5-dichlorophenol while the other chlorine (i.e., corresponding to the high frequency line) gave a lower value of 0.12 in 2,6-dichlorophenol and 0.11 in 2,5-dichlorophenol. These values of n are discussed in terms of hydrogen bonding and bond parameters.

The electronic absorption and i.r. spectroscopic studies are reported for the hydrogen bonding systems involving alcohol and various ketones. It is shown that the hydrogen bonding abilities of ketones are determined by the extent of delocalization of the lone pair electrons in their non-bonding molecular orbitals. Evidence for the formation of very weak intermolecular hydrogen bonds between alcohol and the π-electron part of the dicarbonyls has also been presented from the i.r. studies in the 3400–3700 cm−1 region.

The fabrication of hydrogen bonded polymer self-assembly for drug delivery has been accomplished via layer-by-layer sequential assembly from aqueous solution. In this study, the self-assembly was constructed based on hydrogen bonding between DNA base (adenine and thymine) pairs substituted on the backbone of chitosan and hyaluronic acid. Chitosan was modified with adenine, whereas hyaluronic acid was modified with thymine. Subsequently, these two polymers were sequentially absorbed on flat substrate by taking advantage of interactions of DNA base pairs via hydrogen bonding. Interlayer hydrogen bonding of these two polymers produces stable multilayer film without using any cross-linking agent. Thin film formation on quartz substrate has been monitored with UV-vis spectra and an AFM study. Formation of multilayer hydrogen-bonded thin film has been further confirmed with SEM. Encapsulation and release behavior of the therapeutic drug from the multilayer thin film at different conditions has been illustrated using UV-vis spectra. Cell viability of modified polymers using MTT assay confirmed no cytotoxic effect.

Hydrogen bonding in the highly hindered alcohol 2,4-dimethyl-3-ethyl-3-pentanol has been studied by proton n.m.r. and infrared spectroscopy. This alcohol associates to form a dimer but no higher hydrogen bonded species; hence the monomer–dimer equilibrium can be studied without interference from competing processes. Spectral and thermodynamic properties for the hydrogen bonding are reported.

The crystal structures of three conformationally locked esters, namely the centrosymmetric tetrabenzoate of all-axial per-hydronaphthalene- 2,3,4a, 6,7,8a-hexaol, viz. trans-4a, 8a-dihydroxyperhydronaphthalene-2,3,6,7-tetrayl tetrabenzoate, C38H34O10, and the diacetate and dibenzoate of all-axial perhydronaphthalene-2,3,4a, 8a-tetraol, viz. (2R*,3R*,4aS*,8aS*)-4a, 8a-dihydroxyperhydronaphthalene-2,3-diyl diacetate, C-14-H22O6, and (2R*, 3R*, 4aS*, 8aS*)-4a, 8a-dihydroxyperhydronaphthalene- 2,3-diyl dibenzoate, C24H26O6, have been analyzed in order to examine the preference of their supramolecular assemblies towards competing inter-and intramolecular O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. It was anticipated that the supramolecular assembly of the esters under study would adopt two principal hydrogen-bonding modes, namely one that employs intermolecular O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds (mode 1) and another that sacrifices those for intramolecular O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds and settles for a crystal packing dictated by weak intermolecular interactions alone (mode 2). Thus, while the molecular assembly of the two crystalline diacyl derivatives conformed to a combination of hydrogen-bonding modes 1 and 2, the crystal packing in the tetrabenzoate preferred to follow mode 2 exclusively.

Fabrication of multilayer microcapsules via layer-by-layer approach through hydrogen bonding has attracted enormous interest due to its strong response to pH. In this communication, we have prepared hydrogen-bonded multilayer microcapsule without using any cross-linking agent by using DNA base pair (adenine and thymine) modified biocompatible polymers. The growth of the self-assembly on colloidal (melamine formaldehyde: MF) particles has been monitored with zeta potential measurement. The capsules were obtained on dissolution of MF particles at 0.1N HCl. The capsules were characterized with scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, we have observed the salt induced microscopic change in self-assembly of this system on the surface of colloidal particles.

The X-ray structure and electron density distribution of ethane-1,2-diol (ethylene glycol), obtained at a resolution extending to 1.00 Å−1 in sin θ/λ (data completion = 100% at 100 K) by in situ cryocrystallization technique is reported. The diol is in the gauche (g′Gt) conformation with the crystal structure stabilised by a network of inter-molecular hydrogen bonds. In addition to the well-recognized O–H···O hydrogen bonds there is topological evidence for C–H···O inter-molecular interactions. There is no experimental electron density based topological evidence for the occurrence of an intra-molecular hydrogen bond. The O···H spacing is not, vert, similar0.45 Å greater than in the gas-phase with an O–H···O angle close to 90°, calling into question the general assumption that the gauche conformation of ethane-1,2-diol is stabilised by the intra-molecular oxygen–hydrogen interaction.

The molecular and crystal structures of 4-ethynylcyanobenzene arereported. The packing of molecules in the crystal is found to be homologous with the crystal structures of HCN, cyanoacetylene and 4-cyano-4'-ethynylbiphenyl. Alternatively, these four crystals could be said to constitute a structural homologous series. The influence of C-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonding in directing a linear supramolecular arrangement of molecules with ethynyl and cyano groups at opposite ends, is illustrated.
