Tutkielma käsittelee Einojuhani Rautavaaran omaelämäkertaa (Omakuva, 1989). Työssä on lähdetty liikkeelle Omakuvan lehdistövastaanotosta, jossa kyseenalaistettiin teoksen "totuudellisuus". Useat arvostelijat esimerkiksi pohtivat Omakuvan asemaa fakta-fiktio-akselilla ja viittasivat teoksen romaanimaisuuteen.Tutkielmassa on etsitty selityksiä sille, miksi lukija joutuu kyseenalaistamaan teoksen 'totuudellisuuden' sekä lisäksi sitä, millaisia merkityksiä teoksessa annetaan omalle menneisyydelle. Rautavaaran Omakuva on suhteutettu työssä autobiografian genren kanssa ja analyyttisen tarkastelun lähtökohtana on käytetty Philippe Lejeunen narratologista autobiografiateoriaa. Rautavaaran omaelämäkerta sisältää hyvin heterogeenista ainesta, mutta teos on mielestäni autobiografia eikä se kuulu esimerkisi muistelmien tai omakuvan lajiin. Omakuva kuitenkin horjuttaa lukijan kanssa tehtyä autobiografista ja referentiaalista sopimusta, joka on Lejeunen teorian lähtökohta, eikä siten sopeudu autobiografian lukemisen konventionaalisiin pelisääntöihin. Omakuvan teksti on lisäksi narsistisesti itsetietoista omasta kerronnallisesta identiteetistään, ja teksti pakottaa lukijan havaitsemaan, että tarina on vain tekijän retrospektiivisesti kirjoittama tulkinta elämästään. Rautavaara näkee peilissä paitsi oman kuvansa myös kuvan romanttisesta taiteilijasta. Romanttisen taiteilijamyytin representoituminen tekstissä on keskeinen teoksen 'totuudellisuutta' horjuttava piirre, koska se pakottaa lukijan kysymään, onko peilissä nähty omakuva aito ja todellinen vai onko se kenties tuotettu tietoisesti ja manipuloiden. Omakuvan Rautavaara on romanttinen taiteilija, joka tahtoisi vetäytyä norsunluutornin/erakkoluolan yksinäisyyteen ja pystyttää muurin taiteen ja elämän arvojen välille. Säveltäjän minä on myös konfliktissa häntä ympäröivän yhteiskunnan kanssa ja esimerkiksi kriitikot, muusikot ja kapellimestarit uhkaavat hänen olemassaoloaan. Omakuvan päähenkilö muistuttaakin hyvin paljon Maurice Beeben (1964) tutkimien taiteilijaromaanien päähenkilöitä ja erityisesti James Joycen romaanin Taiteilijan omakuva nuoruuden vuosilta päähenkilöä Stephen Dedalusta. Omakuva lähestyy taiteilijaromaaneille tyypillisiä tapoja kuvata taiteilijaa. Teoksessa käsitellään elämää sekä autobiografisessa että taiteilijaromaanin genren tilassa. Omakuva onkin rajateksti, joka horjuttaa autobiografian lajikonventioita. Lisäksi teoksen minä piiloutuu arkkityyppisten kuvien ja myyttien taakse kieltäen jähmettymisen yhdeksi kuvaksi. Lukijalle tarjoutuukin tekstissä monta mahdollista kuvaa Rautavaarasta ja Omakuvasta tulee erilaisten subjektien näyttämö. Grave sculpture as interpreter of life and death. Grave sculptures done by Heikki Häiväoja, Kain Tapper and Matti Peltokangas 1952-2002. The thoughts of Philippe Ariès and Erwin Panofsky on western funeral art constitute the starting point of this study. These scholars speak about the 20th century as a period of decline regarding western funeral art. The reason for this situation lies, according to them, in the fact that death has been rejected and become a private affair in modern society. Especially Panofsky sees an important reason for the decay of funeral art also in the separation of death from religion. In this study, I approach the view of Ariès and Panofsky from the angle of Finnish funeral art. The subject of the study is grave sculptures of three Finnish sculptors: Heikki Häiväoja, Kain Tapper and Matti Peltokangas, from 1952 to 2002. (The analysis of the grave sculptures has been performed with the Iconology of Erwin Panofsky. The analysis has been deepened by the ideas of a graveyard as a semiotic text according to Werner Enninger and Christa Schwens. In order to confirm their argumentation, they analyse the graveyard text with the model of communicative functions of Roman Jakobson and verify that the graveyard is a cultural text according to Juri Lotman.) Results of the study In the grave sculptures of the sculptors, different worldviews appear alongside Christian thoughts indicating a new stage in the tradition of funeral art. In the grave sculptures characterised as Christian, the view of life after death is included. In these memorials the direction of life is prospective, pointing to the life beyond. Death is a border, beyond which one is unable to see. Nevertheless the border is open or marked by the cross. On this open border, death is absence of pain, glory and new unity. In memorials with different worldviews, the life beyond is a possibility which is not excluded. Memorials interpret life retrospectively; life is a precious memory which wakens grief and longing. Many memorials have metaphysical and mystic features. In spite of democratization the order and valuation of social classes appear in some memorials. The old order also materializes in the war memorials relating the same destiny of the deceased. Different burial places, nevertheless, do not indicate social inequality but are rather signs of diversity. The sculptors' abstract means of modern funeral art deepen the handling of the subject matter of death and reveal the mystery of it. Grave sculptures are a part of Finnish and sacral modern art, and there is an interaction between funeral art and modern art. Modern art acquires a new dimension, when grave sculptures become a part of its field. Grave sculptures offer an alternative to anonymous burying. The memorial is a sign of the end of life; it gives death significance and publicity and creates a relation to the past of the society. In this way, grave sculptures are a part of the chain of memory of the western funeral art, which extends throughout Antiquity until ancient Egypt. (In this study I have spoken of funeral art as a chain of memory using the thoughts of Danièle Hervieu-Léger.) There are no signs of decay in the grave sculptures, on the contrary the tradition of funeral art continues in them as a search for the meaning of life and death and as an intuitive interpretation of death. As such, grave sculptures are part of the Finnish discussion of death.

This paper challenges the predominant view that legitimation is merely a specific phase in merger or acquisition processes. We argue that a better understanding of postmerger organizational dynamics calls for conceptualization of discursive legitimation as an inherent part of unfolding merger processes. In particular, we focus on the recursive relationship between legitimation and organizational action. We have two objectives: to outline a theoretical model that helps one to understand the dynamics of discursive legitimation and organizational action in postmerger organizations, and to examine a revealing case to distinguish the inherent risks and problems in discursive legitimation. Our case analysis focuses on the merger between the French pharmaceutical companies BioMérieux and Pierre Fabre. We adopt a critical multimethod approach and distinguish specific discursive dynamics and pathological tendencies in this case. The analysis highlights the unintended consequences of discursive legitimation, the central role of sensegiving and sensehiding in discursive legitimation, the inherently political nature of legitimation and the risks associated with politicization, the special problems associated with fashionable discourses and the role of the media, the use of specific discursive strategies for legitimation and delegitimation, and the crucial role of actual integration results. This analysis adds to the existing research on mergers and acquisitions by treating discursive legitimation as part of the merger dynamics. In particular, our case analysis provides a new explanation for merger failure. We also believe that the recursive model connecting discursive legitimation and delegitimation strategies to concrete organizational action makes a more general contribution to our understanding of organizational legitimation.

Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908-1961) has been known as the philosopher of painting. His interest in the theory of perception intertwined with the questions concerning the artist s perception, the experience of an artwork and the possible interpretations of the artwork. For him, aesthetics was not a sub-field of philosophy, and art was not simply a subject matter for the aesthetic experience, but a form of thinking. This study proposes an opening for a dialogue between Merleau-Pontian phenomenology and contemporary art. The thesis examines his phenomenology through certain works of contemporary art and presents readings of these artworks through his phenomenology. The thesis both shows the potentiality of a method, but also engages in the critical task of finding the possible limitations of his approach. The first part lays out the methodological and conceptual points of departure of Merleau-Ponty s phenomenological approach to perception as well as the features that determined his discussion on encountering art. Merleau-Ponty referred to the experience of perceiving art using the notion of seeing with (voir selon). He stressed a correlative reciprocity described in Eye and Mind (1961) as the switching of the roles of the visible and the painter. The choice of artworks is motivated by certain restrictions in the phenomenological readings of visual arts. The examined works include paintings by Tiina Mielonen, a photographic work by Christian Mayer, a film by Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno, and an installation by Monika Sosnowska. These works resonate with, and challenge, his phenomenological approach. The chapters with case studies take up different themes that are central to Merleau-Ponty s phenomenology: space, movement, time, and touch. All of the themes are interlinked with the examined artworks. There are also topics that reappear in the thesis, such as the notion of écart and the question of encountering the other. As Merleau-Ponty argued, the sphere of art has a particular capability to address our being in the world. The thesis presents an interpretation that emphasises the notion of écart, which refers to an experience of divergence or dispossession. The sudden dissociation, surprise or rupture that is needed in order for a meeting between the spectator and the artwork, or between two persons, to be possible. Further, the thesis suggests that through artworks it is possible to take into consideration the écart, the divergence, that defines our subjectivity.
