Develops a new technology for the delivery of biocides against agricultural pests, with biocides contained within silica nanocapsules which are themselves protected by an outer envelope, capable of being selectively broken down by the target pest. Will reduce the amount of biocide escaping into the environment, prolong the life of the biocide, reduce biocide usage rates, and reduce undesirable effects on non-target organisms.

The purpose of the report is to summarise progress in developing vegetable production systems with improved soil health that overcome soil limitations with the potential to suppress soil borne diseases. Management approaches to soil health improvement were regionally specific to overcome regional soil limitations in different production environments.

This project is to identify treatments that ginger growers can use to control two serious soil-borne pathogens that have emerged and threaten the viability of the ginger industry. Pythium myriotylum, responsible for a severe rhizome rot, is the more serious of the two. It was first identified by ginger growers in the 2007/08 growing season, with some producers reporting total crop losses in some blocks. Symphylids are wingless soil-inhabiting arthropods that feed on the ginger plant's root tips and impair the plants´ ability to absorb nutrients, seriously restricting plant growth and development. Damage caused by symphylids to ginger roots is also expected to facilitate entry of Pythium into the plant.

• To undertake an audit of management systems used for tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) in greenhouse and field production with the aim of improving disease management determining knowledge gaps in virus-vector relationships. • To investigate the basis for the development of resistance breaking strains of TSWV in capsicums and apply this to virus management in capsicums. • To further develop effective virus management systems in vegetable cucurbit crops. Aspects to be investigated include value of barrier crops, non-insecticide products and cultivar tolerance to virus. • To further develop and assess the adoption and impact of integrated viral disease management systems in field grown and protected cropping systems as part of the vegetable industry development plan.

Phytophthora root rot of avocados and is the major limiting factor to avocado production in Australia. The disease has a significant impact on productivity. An integrated program is recommended for Phytophthora root rot management with phosphorus acid a key component of this strategy. Monthly root analyses will be conducted on 5 avocado orchards across a range of growing environments on the Atherton Tablelands. Detailed tree phenology data will be collected orchard at the same time the root sampling occurs. In conjunction with the phenological data, decay curves will allow the development of recommendations to optimize phosphorous acid applications for the management of Phytophthora root rot in Shepard avocados.

Regional variety trials (RVT) established in 1983 and again in 1997 identified superior varieties for the macadamia industry. From the 1983 trials, guidelines were developed to assist growers to select the most appropriate new varieties for their particular orchards and many of these superior varieties have been enthusiastically adopted by industry. This is also being done for varieties in the 1997 trials. Many of the best cultivars have already been adopted by growers on the basis of annual reports of yield and quality. Industry development over the next 10 to 20 years will be largely dependent on new, superior varieties selected in these RVT5, including new selections from the macadamia industry breeding program.
