Computer simulation has revealed that dual nanostructures for the development of nanodevices as nanowires, optical nanofibres and nanobatteries be obtained by the self-assembly of block copolymers confined geometry. The formation of individual nanostructures depends on the structures of block copolymers the confinement geometry and the interactions block copolymers and the boundary of the confinement geometry. In order to obtain individual nanostructures experimentally, attention needs to be paid to the manufacture of the confinement geometry and the design of the interactions between block copolymers and the boundary of the confinement geometry, The recently developed lithography technique should make experiments successful.

This report describes a facile route to prepare the vesicles and large compound micelles (LCMs) from a series of poly(epsilon-benzyloxycarbonyl L-lysine)-block-poly[diethylene glycol bis(3-amino propyl) ether]-block-poly(epsilon-benzyloxycarbonyl L-lySine) (PZLL-DGBE-PZLL) in their water solution, depending on molecular weight of the polypeptides. A pyrene probe is used to demonstrate the aggregate formation of PZLL-DGBE-PZLL in solution, and also to measure their critical micelle concentration as a function of molecular weight of the polymer.

The amphiphilic PEG1 500-b-EM AP-b-PEG1 500 (EM PAP) triblock copolymer of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and emeraldine aniline-pentamer (EM AP) in its concentrated solution can self-assemble into a special shape like "sandglass", as observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). This "sandglass"- shaped assembly is composed of several "rods" aggregated in the middle, with every "rod" being about 8 VLrn in length and 300 nm in diameter.

Real-space self-consistent field theory (SCFT) is employed to study the effect of solvent molecular size on the self-assembly of amphiphilic diblock copolymer in selective solvent. The phase diagrams in wide ranges of interaction parameters and solvent molecular size were obtained in present study. The results indicate that the solvent molecular size is a key factor that determines the self-assembly of amphiphilic diblock copolymer. The self-assembled morphology changes from circle-like micelle to line-like micelle, then to loop-like micelle by decreasing the solvent molecular size in a wide range of solvent selectivity. We analyze and discuss this change in terms of the solvent solubility and the entropy contribution.

An electroactive triblock copolymer of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and aniline pentamer (AP), PEG-block-AP-block-PEG (PAP), was synthesized via polycondensation in the presence of N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC). The UV-vis spectra and cyclic-voltammograms (CV) spectra exhibited an excellent electroactivity of the triblock copolymer. The amphiphilic triblock copolymer self-assembles spontaneously into uniform micellar aggregates when the triblock copolymer was added directly to the aqueous solution. The size of the aggregates can be changed with the oxidation state of the AP segment in the PAP copolymer and the aggregates were pH-sensitive to the surrounding water solution, which provides a potential application in controlled drug release.

The size-armed polystyrenes and poly-(methyl methacrylate)s with a triphenylene core showed different self-assembling patterns, isolated cylinders for polySt on mico and highly ordered cylindrical pores for polyMMA on a silicon water. With a decrease of polymer concentration in tetrahydrofuran (HHF), the size and height of cylinders decreased for polySt, but fur polyMMA, the size and depth of the cylindrical pores increased. Slow evaporation of the solvent and a low molecular weight favored the formation of regular patterns.

A concise pressure controlled isothermal heating vertical deposition (PCIHVD) method is developed, which provides an optimal growing condition with better stability and reproducibility for fabricating photonic crystals (PCs) without the limitation of colloidal sphere materials and sizes. High quality PCs are fabricated with PCIHVD from polystyrene spheres with diameters ranging from 200 nm to 1 mu m. The deep photonic band gap and steep photonic band edge of the samples are most favorable for realizing ultrafast optical devices, photonic chips, and communications. This method makes a meaningful advance in the quality and diversity of PCs and greatly promotes their wide applications.

Material potential energy is well approximated by '' pair-functional '' potentials. During calculating potential energy, the orientational and volumetric components have been derived from pair potentials and embedding energy, respectively. Slip results in plastic deformation, and slip component has been proposed accordingly. Material is treated as a component assembly, and its elastic, plastic and damage properties are reflected by different components respectively. Material constitutive relations are formed by means of assembling these three kinds of components. Anisotropy has been incorporated intrinsically via the concept of component. Theoretical and numerical results indicate that this method has the capacity of reproducing some results satisfactorily, with the advantages of physical explicitness, etc. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Using next-generation sequencing technology alone, we have successfully generated and assembled a draft sequence of the giant panda genome. The assembled contigs (2.25 gigabases (Gb)) cover approximately 94% of the whole genome, and the remaining gaps (0.05 Gb) seem to contain carnivore-specific repeats and tandem repeats. Comparisons with the dog and human showed that the panda genome has a lower divergence rate. The assessment of panda genes potentially underlying some of its unique traits indicated that its bamboo diet might be more dependent on its gut microbiome than its own genetic composition. We also identified more than 2.7 million heterozygous single nucleotide polymorphisms in the diploid genome. Our data and analyses provide a foundation for promoting mammalian genetic research, and demonstrate the feasibility for using next-generation sequencing technologies for accurate, cost-effective and rapid de novo assembly of large eukaryotic genomes.

Si nanoquantum dots have been formed by self-assembled growth on the both Si-O-Si and Si-OH bonds terminated SiO2 surfaces using the low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) and surface thermal decomposition of pure SiH4 gas. We have experimentally studied the variation of Si. dot density with Si-OH bonds density, deposition temperature and SiH4 pressure, and analyzed qualitatively the formation mechanism of the Si nanoquantum dots based on LPCVD surface thermal dynamics principle. The results are very. important for the control of the density and size of Si nanoquantum dots, and have potential applications in the new quantum devices.

The transmission of electrons through a hierarchical self-assembly of GaAs/AlxGa(1-)xAs quantum dots (QDs) is calculated using the coupled-channel recursion method. Our results reveal that the number of conductance peaks does not change when the barrier widths change, but the intensities decrease as the barrier widths increase. The conductance peaks will shift towards low Fermi energies as the transverse width of GaAs QD increases, as the thickness of GaAs quantum well increases, or as the height of GaAs QDs decreases. Our calculated results may be useful in the application of QDs to photoelectric devices. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.
