In this work, the results of numerical simulations of X-ray fluorescence holograms and the reconstructed atomic images for Fe single crystal are given. The influences of the recording angles ranges and the polarization effect on the reconstruction of the atomic images are discussed. The process for removing twin images by multiple energy fluorescence holography and expanding the energy range of the incident X-rays to improve the resolution of the reconstructed images is presented. Effects of the potential of anodic oxidation and of potential cycling on the surface structure of a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) electrode were observed by in situ electrochemical scanning tunnelling microscopy (ECSTM) in dilute H2SO4 solution with atomic resolution. With potential cycling between -0.1 V and 1.8 V vs. Ag/AgCl (sat. KCI), some atoms on the top layer of HOPG protrude out of the base plane, and the graphite lattice of these protrusions is still intact but is strained and expanded. With further potential cycling, some protrusions coalesced and some grew larger, and an anomalous superperiodic feature was observed (spacing 90 Angstrom with a rotation 30 degrees relative to atomic corrugations) which superimposed on the atomic corrugation of HOPG. On the topmost of these protrusions, some atoms form oxides and others are still resolved by the ECSTM image. With potential cycling between -0.1 V and + 2.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl (sat. KCl), damage to freshly cleaved HOPG surface is more serious and fast, some ridges are observed, the atomic structure of the HOPG surface is partially and then completely damaged due to the formation of oxide. We also found that anodic oxidation occurred nonuniformly on the surface of HOPG near defects during potential cycling.

The defects in 3C-SiC film grown on (001) plane of Si substrate were studied using a 200 kV high-resolution electron microscope with point resolution of 0.2 nm. A posterior image processing technique, the image deconvolution, was utilized in combination with the image contrast analysis to distinguish atoms of Si from C distant from each other by 0.109 nm in the [110] projected image. The principle of the image processing technique utilized and the related image contrast theory is briefly presented. The procedures of transforming an experimental image that does not reflect the crystal structure intuitively into the structure map and of identifying Si and C atoms from the map are described. The atomic configurations for a 30 degrees partial dislocation and a microtwin have been derived at atomic level. It has been determined that the 30 degrees partial dislocation terminates in C atom and the segment of microtwin is sandwiched between two 180 degrees rotation twins. The corresponding stacking sequences are derived and atomic models are constructed according to the restored structure maps for both the 30 degrees partial dislocation and microtwin. Images were simulated based on the two models to affirm the above-mentioned results.

Effects of some factors on the performance of our Kalman filter in discrimination of closely spaced overlapping signals were investigated. The resolution power of the filter for overlapping lines can be strengthened by reduction of the step size in scans. The minimum peak separation of two lines which the Kalman filter can effectively handle generally equals two to three times the step size in scans. Significant difference between the profiles of the analysis and interfering lines and multiple lines from matrix in the spectral window of the analysis line are very helpful for the Kalman filter to discern closely spaced analysis and interfering signals correctly, which allow the filter well to resolve the line pair with very small peak distance or even the entirely coincident lines.

A Kalman filter was developed for resolving overlapping lines in inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and evaluated experimentally with the determination of La in the presence of Ho, and Cu in the presence of Pr. The whiteness of the innovation sequence for an optimal filter was explored to be the criterion for the correction of the wavelength positioning errors which may occur in spectral scans. Under the conditions of the medium-resolution spectrometer and 1.5 pm step size in scans, the filter effectively resolved the Cu/Pr line pair having a small peak separation of 4.8 pm. For the La/Ho line pair with a peak distance of 9.8 pm, an unbiased estimate for La concentration was still obtained even when the signal-to-background ratio was down to 0.048. Favourable detection limits for real samples were achieved. Unstructured backgrounds were modeled theoretically and all spectral scans therefore did not require the correction for solvent.

A novel read-only memory (ROM) disk with an AgOx mask layer was proposed and studied in this letter. The AgOx films sputtered on the premastered substrates, with pits depth of 50 nm and pits length of 380 nm, were studied by an atomic force microscopy. The transmittances of these AgOx films were also measured by a spectrophotometer. Disk measurement was carried out by a dynamic setup with a laser wavelength of 632.8 nm and a lens numerical aperture (NA) of 0.40. The readout resolution limit of this setup was λ/(4NA) (400 nm). Results showed that the super-resolution readout happened only when the oxygen flow ratios were at suitable values for these disks. The best super-resolution performance was achieved at the oxygen flow ratio of 0.5 with the smoothest film surface. The super-resolution readout mechanism of these ROM disks was analyzed as well.

Static recording characteristic of super-resolution near-field structure with antimony (Sb) is investigated in this paper. The recording marks are observed by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), a high-resolution optical microscopy with a CCD camera and an atomic force microscopy (AFM). The super-resolution mechanism is also analyzed based on these static recording marks. Results show that the light reaching on recording layer is composed of two parts, one is the linear transmissive light (propagating field) and the other is the nonlinear evanescent light in the optical near field. The evanescent light may be greatly enhanced in the center of the spot because Sb will transit from a semiconductor to a metal when it is melted under the high laser power irradiation. This local melted area in the spot center may be like a metal tip in the optical near field that can collect and enhance the information that is far beyond the diffraction limit, which leads to the super-resolution recording and readout. The diamond (100) facets deposited at initial 1.0% CH4 have been investigated using high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). The diamond (100) facets grown at 800-degrees-C are terminated by CH2 radicals, and there is no detectable frequency shift compared with the characteristic frequencies of molecular subgroup CH2. Beside the CH2 vibration loss, CH bend loss (at 140 meV) of locally monohydrogenated dimer is detected for the diamond (100) facets grown at 1000-degrees-C. Dosing the (100) facets grown at 800-degrees-C with atomic hydrogen at 1*10(-6) mbar, the loss peak at 140 meV appears. It is suggested that there are enough separately vacant sites and uniformly dispersed monohydrogenated dimers on (100) facets. This structure relaxes the steric repulsion between the adjacent hydrogen atoms during the diamond (100) surface growth.

A new method using an atomic-resonance filter and deconvolution techniques has been developed to acquire high-resolution spectra of atmospheric Rayleigh-Mie scattering. In the deconvolution process, the difficulty of the undetermined division 0/0 is overcome by a fitting method. Preliminary laboratory experimental results on 90-deg scattering show that with a signal-to-noise ratio of 20, the scattered Rayleigh-Mie spectrum may be retrieved in agreement with the theoretical analysis.

A circular bacterial artificial chromosome of 148.9 kbp on human chromosome 3 has been extended and fixed on bare mica substrates using a developed fluid capillary flow method in evaporating liquid drops. Extended circular DNA molecules were imaged with an atomic force microscope (AFM) under ambient conditions. The measured total lengths of the whole DNA molecules were in agreement with sequencing analysis data with an error range of +/-3.6%. This work is important groundwork for probing single nucleotide polymorphisms in the human genome, mapping genomic DNA, manipulating biomolecular nanotechnology, and studying the interaction of DNA-protein complexes investigated by AFM.

The thin films of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) and their blends were prepared by means of spin-coating their corresponding solutions onto silicon wafers, followed by being annealed at different temperatures. The surface phase separations of PMMA/SAN blends were characterized by virtue of atomic force microscopy (AFM). By comparing the tapping mode AFM (TM-AFM) phase images of the pure components and their blends, surface phase separation mechanisms of the blends could be identified as the nucleation and growth mechanism or the spinodal decomposition mechanism. Therefore, the phase diagram of the PMMA/SAN system could be obtained by means of TM-AFM. Contact mode AFM was also used to study the surface morphologies of all the samples and the phase separations of the blends occurred by the spinodal decomposition mechanism could be ascertained. Moreover, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to characterize the chemical compositions on the surfaces of the samples and the miscibility principle of the PMMA/SAN system was discussed.

A kind of simple atomic force microscopy (AFM) relocated technique, which takes advantage of homemade sample locator system, is used for investigating repeatedly imaging of some specific species on the whole substrate (over 1 x 1 cm(2)) with resolution about 400 nm. As applications of this sample locator system, single extended DNA molecules and plasmid DNA network are shown in different AFM operational modes: tapping mode and contact mode with different tips after the substrates have been moved.

The present paper deals with the evaluation of the relative error (DELTA(A)) in estimated analyte concentrations originating from the wavelength positioning error in a sample scan when multicomponent analysis (MCA) techniques are used for correcting line interferences in inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. In the theoretical part, a quantitative relation of DELTA(A) with the extent of line overlap, bandwidth and the magnitude of the positioning error is developed under the assumption of Gaussian line profiles. The measurements of eleven samples covering various typical line interferences showed that the calculated DELTA(A) generally agrees well with the experimental one. An expression of the true detection limit associated with MCA techniques was thus formulated. With MCA techniques, the determination of the analyte and interferent concentrations depend on each other while with conventional correction techniques, such as the three-point method, the estimate of interfering signals is independent of the analyte signals. Therefore. a given positioning error results in a larger DELTA(A) and hence a higher true detection limit in the case of MCA techniques than that in the case of conventional correction methods. although the latter could be a reasonable approximation of the former when the peak distance expressed in the effective width of the interfering line is larger than 0.4. In the light of the effect of wavelength positioning errors, MCA techniques have no advantages over conventional correction methods unless the former can bring an essential reduction ot the positioning error.
