Ni0.65Zn0.35Cu0.1Fe1.9O4/SiO2 nanocomposites with different weight percentages of NiZnCu-ferrite dispersed in silica matrix were successfully fabricated by the sol-gel method using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor of silica, and metal nitrates as precursors of NiZnCu ferrite. The thermal decomposition process of the dried gel was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The obtained Ni0.65Zn0.35Cu0.1Fe1.9O4/SiO2 nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Mossbauer spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The formation of stoichiometric NiZnCu-ferrite dispersed in silica matrix is confirmed when the weight percentage of ferrite is not more than 30%. Samples with higher ferrite content have small amount of alpha-Fe2O3. The transition from the paramagnetic to the ferromagnetic state is observed as the ferrite content increases from 20 to 90wt%.

Hexagonally ordered arrays of magnetic FePt nanoparticles on Si substrates are prepared by a self assembly of diblock copolymer PS-b-P2VP in toluene, a dip coating process and finally plasma treatment. The as-treated FePt nanoparticles are covered by an oxide layer that can be removed by a 40 s Ar+ sputtering. The effects of the sequence of adding salts on the composition distribution are revealed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. No particle agglomeration is observed after 600 degrees C annealing for the present ordered array of FePt nanoparticles, which exhibits advantages in patterning FePt nanoparticles by a micellar method. Moreover, magnetic properties of the annealed FePt nanoparticles at room temperature are investigated by a vibrating sample magnetometer.

Fe-N films containing the Fe16N2 phase were prepared in a high-vacuum system of ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD). The composition and structure of the films were analysed by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. Magnetic properties of the films were measured by a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The phase composition of Fe-N films depend sensitively on the N/Fe atomic arrival ratio and the deposition temperature. An Fe16N2 film was deposited successfully on a GaAs (1 0 0) substrate by IBAD at a N/Fe atomic arrival ratio of 0.12. The gram-saturation magnetic moment of the Fe16N2 film obtained is 237 emu/g at room temperature, the possible cause has been analysed and discussed. Hysteresis loops of Fe16N2 have been measured, the coercive force H-c is about 120 Oe, which is much larger than the value for Fe, this means the Fe16N2 sample exhibits a large uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy. (Ni0.65Zn035Cu0.1Fe1.904)-Cu-./SiO2 natiocomposites were fabricated by the sol-gel method using tetraethylorthosilicate as a precursor of silica, and metal nitrates as precursors of NiZnCu ferrite. With infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope, Raman spectra, Mossbauer spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer measurements, the formation of single phase nanocrystalline NiZnCu ferrites dispersed in silica matrix is confirmed when the sample is annealed at 550degreesC. The transition from the paramagnetic to the ferromagnetic state is observed as the annealing temperature increases from 750degreesC to 1150degreesC. The magnetic properties of these nanocomposites are clearly size dependent. The saturation magnetization increases with the annealing temperature.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was first used as chelating agent and metal nitrates as precursor of ferrite in the fabrication of nanocrystalline Ni0.65Zn0.35Cu0.1Fe1.9O4 particles by the sol-gel method. The thermal decomposition process of dried gel was studied by thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and infrared spectra (IR). The structural and magnetic properties of resultant particles were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The dependence of the decomposition of dried gel, the formation of spinel structured NiZnCu ferrite, the sizes of annealed particles, the saturation magnetization and coercivity of annealed particles on annealing temperature is presented.

MnZn-ferrite/SiO2 nanocomposites with different silica content were successfully fabricated by a novel modified sol-gel auto-combustion method using citric acid as a chelating agent and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the source of silica matrix. The auto-combustion nature of the dried gel was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Infrared spectra (IR), thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation shows that the MnZn-ferrite particles are homogeneously dispersed in silica matrix after auto-combustion of the dried gels. The magnetic properties vary with the silica content. The transition from the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic state is observed by Mossbauer spectra measurement with the increasing silica content. Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) shows that the magnetic properties of Mn0.65Zn0.35Fe2O4/SiO2 nanocomposites strongly depend on the silica content.

The synthesis of nanocrystalline W-type hexaferrites Ba(CoxZn1-x)(2)Fe16O27 powders by sol-gel auto-combustion method has been investigated. The thermal decomposition process of dried gel was studied by thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and infrared spectra (IR). The structural and magnetic properties of resultant particles were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results reveal that the dried gel exhibits auto-combustion behavior. After combustion, pure nanocrystalline W-type hexaferrite phase starts to appear at the calcination temperature of 800 degrees C. The crystallinity and the grain size increase at higher temperature. The saturation magnetization and coercivity clearly depend on calcination temperature and Co content X.

Ion beam etching technique was used to reveal the metallograhpic microstructure and interface morphology of electroplating chromium coating, in particular, whose substrate surface layer was treated in advance by laser quenching. Chemical etchings were, also conducted for comparison. The reveal microstructures were observed and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The results show that ion beam etching can reveal well the whole microstructures of composite coating-substrate materials.

By sample specificity it is meant that specimens with the same nominal material parameters and tested under the same environmental conditions may exhibit different behavior with diversified strength. Such an effect has been widely observed in the testing of material failure and is usually attributed to the heterogeneity of material at the mesoscopic level. The degree with which mesoscopic heterogeneity affects macroscopic failure is still not clear. Recently, the problem has been examined by making use of statistical ensemble evolution of dynamical system and the mesoscopic stress re-distribution model (SRD). Sample specificity was observed for non-global mean stress field models, such as the duster mean field model, stress concentration at tip of microdamage, etc. Certain heterogeneity of microdamage could be sensitive to particular SRD leading to domino type of coalescence. Such an effect could start from the microdamage heterogeneity and then be magnified to other scale levels. This trans-scale sensitivity is the origin of sample specificity. The sample specificity leads to a failure probability Phi (N) with a transitional region 0 <

Most of the existing researches either focus on vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs) of a pipeline near a rigid boundary, or on seabed scour around a fixed pipeline. In this study, the coupling effects between pipeline vibration and sand scour are investigated experimentally. Experimental results indicate that there often exist two phases in the process of sand scouring around the pipeline with an initial embedment, i.e. Phase I: scour beneath pipe without VIV, and Phase II: scour with VIV of pipe. During Phase II, the amplitude of pipe vibration gets larger and its frequency gets smaller while the sand beneath the pipe is being scoured, and finally the pipe vibration and sand scour get into an equilibrium state. This indicates that sand scouring has an influence upon not only the amplitude of pipe vibration but also its frequency. Moreover, the equilibrium scour depth decreases with increasing initial gap-to-diameter ratio for both the fixed pipes and vibrating pipes. For a given value of initial gapto- diameter ratio (e0/D), the vibrating pipe may induce a deeper scour hole than the fixed pipe in the examined range of initial gap-to-diameter ratios (−0.25 < e0/D < 0.75).

The concept ''sample-specific'' is suggested to describe the behavior of disordered media close to macroscopic failure. it is pointed out that the transition from universal scaling to sample-specific behavior may be a common phenomenon in failure models of disordered media. The dynamical evolution plays an important role in the transition.

Most of the existing researches either focus on vortex-induced-vibrations (VIV) of a pipeline near a rigid boundary, or on seabed scour around a fixed pipeline. In the fields, pipeline vibration and seabed scour are actually always coupled. Based on the similarity analysis, a series of tests were conducted with a hydro-elastic facility to investigate the influence of pipe vibration on the local scour and the effects of scour process on the pipeline dynamic responses. Experimental results indicate that, there exist two phases in the process of sand scouring around the pipeline with small embedment, i.e. Phase I: scour beneath pipe without VIV, and Phase II: scour with VIV of pipe. It is also found that the gap-to-diameter ratio (e/D) has much effect upon the scour depth for the fixed pipes. For a given value of e/D, the vibrating pipes with close proximity to seabed may induce a deeper scour hole than the fixed ones. Within the examined gap-to-diameter ratio range (425 < e/D < 0.75), the influences of gap-to-diameter ratio on the maximum values of scour-depth for the case of vibrating pipes are not as much as those for the case of fixed pipes.

A new method of frequency-shifting for a diode laser is realized. Using a sample-and-hold circuit, the error signal can be held by the circuit during frequency shifting. It can avoid the restraint of locking or even lock-losing caused by the servo circuit when we input a step-up voltage into piezoelectric transition (PZT) to achieve laser frequency-shifting.
