A theoretical model is presented to investigate the size-dependent elastic moduli of nanostructures with the effects of the surface relaxation surface energy taken into consideration. At nanoscale, due to the large ratios of the surface-to-volume, the surface effects, which include surface relaxation surface energy, etc., can play important roles. Thus, the elastic moduli of nanostructures become surface- and size-dependent. In the research, the three-dimensional continuum model of the nanofilm with the surface effects is investigated. The analytical expressions of five nonzero elastic moduli of the nanofilm are derived, and then the dependence of the elastic moduli is discussed on the surface effects and the characteristic dimensions of nanofilms.

We report the effects of accumulated strain by stacking on the surface and optical properties of stacked 1.3 mu m InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) structures grown by MOCVD. It is found that the surface of the stacked QD structures becomes more and more undulated with stacking, due to the increased strain in the stacked QD structures with stacking. The photoluminescence intensity from the QD structures first increases as the stacking number increases from 1 to 3 and then dramatically decreases as it further increases, implying a significant increase in the density of crystal defects in the stacked QD structures due to the accumulated strain. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the strain can be reduced by simply introducing annealing steps just after growing the GaAs spacers during the deposition of the stacked QD structures, leading to significant improvement in the surface and optical properties of the structures. Theoretical and experimental investigations were performed to show the application of x-ray crystal truncation rod scattering combined with x-ray reflectivity in the measurements of surface roughness and near-surface damage of mechanochemically polished wafers. By fitting the measured crystal truncation rod curves it has been shown that polished wafers are divided into three parts -irregular steps on the surface, a damaged thin layer beneath the surface and a perfect bulk. The results show that the root mean square of the surface roughness of mechanochemically polished Fe-doped and/or S-doped InP wafers is one to two atom layers, and that the lateral correlation length of the surface roughness is about 3000-7500 Angstrom. The thickness of the damaged region is found to be about 1000 atom layers.

The surface and interface morphologies of polystyrene (PS)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin-film blends and bilayers were investigated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Spin-coating a drop of a PS solution directly onto a PMMA bottom layer from a common solvent for both polymers yielded lateral domains that exhibited a well-defined topographical structure. Two common solvents were used in this study. The structure of the films changed progressively as the concentration of the PS solution was varied. The formation of the blend morphology could be explained by the difference in the solubility of the two polymers in the solvent and the dewetting of PS-rich domains from the PMMA-rich phase. Films of the PS/PMMA blend and bilayer were annealed at temperatures above their glass-transition temperatures for up to 70 h. All samples investigated with AFM were covered with PS droplets of various size distributions. Moreover, we investigated the evolution of the annealed PS/PMMA thin-film blend and bilayer and gave a proper explanation for the formation of a relatively complicated interface inside a larger PS droplet.

Diaminoalkanes (NH2(CH2)(n)NH2, n = 7,10,12) were grafted onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface by amino cation radical formed during electrooxidation of amino group. The presence of diamine grafted layer at the GCE is demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The effect of the grafted layer at the GCE surface on the redox responses of Ru(NH3)(6)(3+) and Fe(CN)(6)(3-) redox probes has been investigated. Electrochemical impedance experiments indicate that the kinetics of electron transfer are slowed down when the scan rate taken to modify the GCE is low, and that diaminoalkane with longer alkyl-chain used has higher blocking characteristics. The amine-functionalized GCE is versatile not only to further covalently immobilize ferrocene acetic acid via carbodiimide coupling, but also as a charge-rich substrate to successfully adsorb heteropolyanion P2W18 in acidic solution by electrostatic interaction. The adsorbed kinetics, proton transportation in electrochemical redox process of 4-pyridyl hydroquinone (4PHQ) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) modified Pt electrode were studied by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) in situ. It proved that the electrode was modified by a monolayer and underwent a rapid electron transfer. It was a slow adsorbed kinetic process. The ion transfer in the electrochemical redox at the SAM-modified electrode surface mainly involved into the hydrate hydrogen ion.

A novel in-situ spectroelectrochemical technique, the combination of probe beam deflection (PBD) with cyclic voltammetry (CV), was used to study the ion exchange process of prussian blue(PB) modified film electrode in contact with various electrolyte solutions. The ion exchange mechanism was verified as following: (K2Fe2+FeII)(CN)(6) -e(-)-k(+)reversible arrow +e(-)+k(+) (KFe3+FeII)(CN)(6) -ke(-)-xk(+)reversible arrow +xe(-)+kk(+) [(Fe3+FeIII)(CN)(6)](x)[(KFe3+FeII)(CN)(6)](1-x) where on reduction PB film in contact with an acidic KCl electrolyte, it was confirmed that protons enter into the PB film before K+ cations.

The coupling selectivity was greatly enhanced by adding Li to La2O3, compared with the single La2O3. The O2- species was found on the Li/La2O3 but not on the single La2O3. In low-temperature desorption, ethane desorbed from the Li/La2O3 but was not detected with the single La2O3. It is considered that the addition of Li gave rise to some basic sites which are favorable for the coupling reaction.

In this work, the photosynthetic performances of Enteromorpha prolifera thalli collected from the surface and bottom of the sea of Qingdao sea area were studied with chlorophyll fluorescence and oxygraph technology. The samples with the highest photosynthetic activity among their kinds, the floating thalli from the sea surface of the south of the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center and the sedimentary thalli from the mud surface of the bottom Tuandao bay, were chosen as representatives of surface thalli and bottom thalli, respectively. The results showed that the maximal PSII quantum yield of the floating thalli was significantly lower than the normal level although their photosynthetic activities were relatively high; the photosynthetic potential of the thalli form the mud surface was extremely low. Thus, it is indicated that the floating thalli are seriously stressed by their environment and the thalli from the mud surface are already dead or are dying. On the other hand, the results of the laboratory cultivation showed that the sedimentary thalli cannot regain normal photosynthetic activity even under normal illumination conditions. Thus, the thalli from the mud surface cannot become reproductive source of the alga even if they can reach sea surface again. Therefore, a preliminary conclusion can be reached that, up to mid-July 2008, the environmental conditions of the Qingdao sea area are not suitable for the growth of the alga E. prolifera and for this reason the biomass of E. prolifera, in the area, could be declining.
