By realizing in thin films a tensile stress state, superconductivity of 13 K was introduced into FeTe, a nonsuperconducting parent compound of the iron pnictides and chalcogenides, with a transition temperature higher than that of its superconducting isostructural counterpart FeSe. For these tensile stressed films, superconductivity is accompanied by a softening of the first-order magnetic and structural phase transition, and also, the in-plane extension and out-of-plane contraction are universal in all FeTe films independent of the sign of the lattice mismatch, either positive or negative. Moreover, the correlations were found to exist between the transition temperatures and the tetrahedra bond angles in these thin films.

By neutron diffraction and other experiments, we have found that oxygen ions in YBCO can diffuse out of the sample in vacuo at room and low temperature, while the T(c) decreases greatly. We have also found that if the vacuum-deoxidation process lasts for several days there will be a damping oscillation of T(c) with time (t), and higher vacuum corresponds to a greater amplitude and a shorter period. We tentatively think that T(c) should satisfy the following function: T(c0) is-proportional-to T(c)e(-betat)cos (omegat + phi); it may be due to the diffusion of oxygen and the saturation of the valence state.

Using the numerical unrestricted Hartree-Fock approach, we study the ground state of a two-orbital model describing newly discovered FeAs-based superconductors. We observe the competition of a (0, π) mode spin-density wave and the superconductivity as the doping concentration changes. There might be a small region in the electron-doping side where the magnetism and superconductivity coexist. The superconducting pairing is found to be spin singlet, orbital even, and coexisting sxy + dx~2-y~2 wave (even parity).

In the Bi-based high-T(c) superconductors, three superconducting transition points were observed above the liquid-N2 temperature range. Allotropes of the 2212 phase were found. These allotropes were metastable and can interchange with the 2212 phase, and their T(c)'s vary from approximately 85 to approximately 100 K.

The effect of oxygen content on superconductivity of the 2212 and 2223 phase has been studied. By comparing the excess oxygen, the modulation vector, the XRD patterns, and the electric resistivity of 2212 and 2223 phase samples obtained with different post-annealing conditions, i.e., annealing at 600-degrees-C or quenching from 860-degrees-C, it was found that the superconductivity is markedly influenced by both the defect distribution in non-Bi layers and the interstitial oxygens incorporated in the Bi-O layers. A tentative explanation for this is given.

The effect of doping with various amount of Sb (0.06-0.32) to (Bi,Pb):Sr:Ca:Cu = 1:1:1:1 system were studied with XRD and Tc measurements. The presence of Sb promotes the conversion of low Tc phase (2212 phase) to high Tc phase (2223 phase) and at around Sb = 0.18 the 2212 phase nearly completely disappears; but at the same time a new phase of unknown structure appears even with Sb = 0.06 showing that the incorporation of Sb into the Bi-based superconducting phase is of very low concentration. Tc measurements show that the optimum concentration of Sb-doping is around 0.10 and that unknown phase has an adverse effect to the superconducting properties; a composition disproportion at the surface of pellet was observed.

Analysing the coordination state of copper ions in cuprate superconductors, it is found that the larger the energy splitting between d(x2-y2) and d(z2) orbitals of Cu or the higher the energy of the d(x2-y2) orbital, the higher the Tc. Thus, appropriate coordination structures and strong-field ligands must be chosen for expanding the energy splitting and increasing the energy of the d(x2-y2) orbital when searching for new high-Tc superconductors. Summarizing the experimental results of ESR and XPS, it is considered that the [Cu2+ - O open-square-box 2- - Cu3+] resonance exists in cuprate superconductors and the electron field breathing mode is present. Analysing the mechanism and the relationship between the coordination state of Cu and Tc, we consider that the two dimensional Cu-O planes are responsible for the superconductivity of YBa2Cu3O7-y.

Epitaxial YBCO superconducting films were deposited on the single crystal LaAlO3 (001) substrate by metal organic deposition method. All YBCO films were fired at 820 degrees C in humidity range of 2.6%-19.7% atmosphere. Microstructure of YBCO thin films was analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Superconducting properties of YBCO films were measured by four-probe method. XRD results showed that the second phase (such as BaF2)and a-axis-oriented grains existed in the films prepared at 2.6% humidity condition; a-axis-oriented grains increased in the film prepared at higher than 4.2% humidity condition; almost pure c-axias-oriented grains existed in the films fired at 4.2% humidity condition. Morphologies of the YBCO films showed that all films had a smooth and crack-free surface. YBCO film prepared at 4.2% humidity condition showed J(c) value of 3.3 MA/cm(2) at 77 K in self-field.

An effective method is developed to fabricate metallic microcircuits in diamond anvil cell (DAC) for resistivity measurement under high pressure. The resistivity of nanocrystal ZnS is measured under high pressure up to 36.4 GPa by using designed DAC. The reversibility and hysteresis of the phase transition are observed. The experimental data is confirmed by an electric current field analysis accurately. The method used here can also be used under both ultrahigh pressure and high temperature conditions.

Using the multiband quantum transmitting boundary method (MQTBM), hole resonant tunneling through AlGaAs/GaMnAs junctions is investigated theoretically. Because of band-edge splitting in the DMS layer, the current for holes with different spins are tuned in resonance at different biases. The bound levels of the "light" hole in the quantum well region turned out to be dominant in the tunneling channel for both "heavy" and "light" holes. The resonant tunneling structure can be used as a spin filter for holes for adjusting the Fermi energy and the thickness of the junctions.

A new two-dimensional structure modulation along c- and b-axes has been discovered in superconducting single crystals of Bi2.13Sr1.87CuO6+delta (Bi2201) by x-ray scattering. Such modulation structure does not exist in non-superconducting Bi2201 single crystals, but instead lattice distortions are observed in the a-b-plane. This phenomenon may indicate that both strain relaxation and charge modulation in the a-b-plane are important to the occurrence of superconductivity in the copper oxides.

The geometrical parameters and electronic structures of C60, (A partial derivative C60) (A = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) and (H partial derivative C60) (H = F, Cl, Br, I) have been calculated by the EHMO/ASED (atom superposition and electron delocalization) method. When putting a central atom into the C60 cage, the frontier and subfrontier orbitals of (A partial derivative C60) (A = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) and (H partial derivative C60) (H = F, Cl) relative to those of C60 undergo little change and thus, from the viewpoint of charge transfer, A (A = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) and H (H = F, Cl) are simply electron donors and acceptors for the C60 cage resPeCtively. Br is an electron acceptor but it does influence the frontier and subfrontier MOs for the C60 cage, and although there is no charge transfer between I and the C60 cage, the frontier and subfrontier MOs for the C60 cage are obviously influenced by I. The stabilities DELTAE(X) (DELTAE(X) = (E(X) + E(C60)) - E(x partial derivative C60)) follow the sequence I < Br < None < Cl < F < Li < Na < K < Rb < Cs while the cage radii r follow the inverse sequence. The stability order and the cage radii order have been explained by means of the (exp-6-1) potential.
