The concept of biosensor based on imaging ellipsometry was proposed ten years ago. Its principle and the methodology as well as some solutions to problems which have to be faced during the development are mentioned. Its properties of phase sensitive, high throughput and fast sampling, as well as label-free, sensitivity better than 1 ng/ml for Immunoglobulin G, and real-time analysis for protein interaction process, etc. provide a potential for applications in biomedicine field. The recent biosensing development with total internal reflection imaging ellipsometry is presented also. [GRAPHICS] An example of 48 protein arrays in matrix. (C) 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Y2O3: Eu3+ phosphor layers were deposited on monodisperse SiO2 particles with different sizes ( 300, 500, 900, and 1200 nm) via a sol-gel process, resulting in the formation of Y2O3: Eu3+@SiO2 core-shell particles. X-ray diffraction ( XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy ( TEM), time-resolved photoluminescence ( PL) spectra, and lifetimes were employed to characterize the Y2O3: Eu3+@SiO2 core-shell samples. The results of XRD indicated that the Y2O3: Eu3+ layers began to crystallize on the silica surfaces at 600 degrees C and the crystallinity increased with the elevation of annealing temperature until 900 degrees C. The obtained core-shell particles have perfect spherical shape with narrow size distribution and non-agglomeration. The thickness of the shells could be easily controlled by changing the number of deposition cycles ( 60 nm for three deposition cycles). Under the excitation of ultraviolet ( 250 nm), the Eu3+ ion mainly shows its characteristic red ( 611 nm, D-5(0)-F-7(2)) emissions in the core-shell particles from Y2O3: Eu3+ shells.

Highly crystalline CaMoO4:Tb3+ phosphor layers were grown on monodisperse SiO2 particles through a simple sol-gel method, resulting in formation of core-shell structured SiO2@CaMoO4:Tb3+ submicrospheres. The resulting SiO2@CaMoO4: Tb3+ core-shell particles were fully characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectra (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence (PL), low-voltage cathodoluminescence (CL), and kinetic decays. The XRD results demonstrate that the CaMoO4:Tb3+ layers begin to crystallize on the SiO2 spheres after annealing at 400 degrees C and the crystallinity increases with raising the annealing temperature. SEM and TEM analysis indicates that the obtained submicrospheres have a uniform size distribution and obvious core-shell structure. SiO2@CaMoO4:Tb3+ submicrospheres show strong green emission under short ultraviolet (260 nm) and low-voltage electron beam (1-3 kV) excitation, and the emission spectra are dominated by a D-5(4) -F-7(5) transition of Tb3+(544 nm, green) from the CaMoO4:Tb3+ shells.

A super-hydrophobic surface was obtained on a three-dimensional (313) polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) macroporous film. The porous films were fabricated through self-assembled silica colloidal templates. The apparent water contact angle of the surface can be tuned from 106 degrees to 153 degrees through altering the sintering temperature and the diameter of the colloidal templates. A composite structure of micro-cavities and nanoholes on the PVDF surface was responsible for the super-hydrophobicity. The wettability of the porous surfaces was described by the use of the Cassie-Baxter model and Wenzel's equation.

Polymer deposition is a serious problem associated with the etching of fused silica by use of inductively coupled plasma (ICP) technology, and it usually prevents further etching. We report an optimized etching condition under which no polymer deposition will occur for etching fused silica with ICP technology. Under the optimized etching condition, surfaces of the fabricated fused silica gratings are smooth and clean. Etch rate of fused silica is relatively high, and it demonstrates a linear relation between etched depth and working time. Results of the diffraction of gratings fabricated under the optimized etching condition match theoretical results well. (c) 2005 Optical Society of America.

Bulk samples of tellurite glass with composition 75TeO(2)-20ZnO-5Na(2)O (TZN) were fabricated by melting and quenching techniques. In order to improve the surface quality of optical fiber preform made with this tellurite glass, the authors developed a multistage etching process. The relationship between successive etching treatments and roughness of the TZN glass surface was probed by using an atomic force microscope. The results demonstrate that this multistage etching method effectively improves this tellurite glass surface smoothness to a level comparable with that of a reference silica glass slide, and the corresponding chemical micromechanisms and fundamentals are discussed and confirmed by atomic force microscopy, potentially contributing to the development of multicomponent soft glass fibers and devices. Super-hydrophobic films with vinyl-modified silica nanoparticles (V-SiOx-NPs) were successfully prepared. The rough surface, which was composed of microstructures of disordered V-SiOx-NPs and nanostructures on the surface of V-SiOx-NPs, rather than the chemical composition devoted to the super-hydrophobicity of film. The relationship between contact angle and diameter of V-SiOx-NPs was then investigated. The sessile contact angles (CA) of films with 150-1600nm V-SiOx-NPs were around 166 regardless the diameter, while the film with 85 nm V-SiOx-NPs had the lowest CA of about 158. The packing manner of V-SiOx-NPs determined the air fraction on the surface and then the CA.

A high-efficiency nanoelectrocatalyst based on high-density Au/Pt hybrid nanoparticles supported on a silica nanosphere (Au-Pt/SiO2) has been prepared by a facile wet chemical method. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are employed to characterize the obtained Au-Pt/SiO2. It was found that each hybrid nanosphere is composed of high-density small Au/Pt hybrid nanoparticles with rough surfaces. These small Au/Pt hybrid nanoparticles interconnect and form a porous nanostructure, which provides highly accessible activity sites, as required for high electrocatalytic activity. We suggest that the particular morphology of the AuPt/SiO2 may be the reason for the high catalytic activity. Thus, this hybrid nanomaterial may find a potential application in fuel cells.

One-step synthesis of Ru (bpy)(3) Cl-2-immobilized (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) silica nanoparticles (Ru-silica nanoparticles) for use in electrogenerated-chemiluminescence (ECL) detection is reported. Ru-silica nanoparticles are prepared by using the Stober method. Compared with free Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2, Ru-silica nanoparticles are seen to exhibit a red-shift of the UV-vis absorbance peak and a longer fluorescence lifetime, which are attributed to the electrostatic interaction of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) and silica. Because silica nanoparticles are used as immobilization matrices, the surfaces of Ru-silica nanoparticles are easily modified or functionalized via the assembly of other nanoparticles, such as Au. For ECL detection, Au-colloid-modified Ru-silica nanoparticles are immobilized on a 3-mercaptopropyl-trimethoxysilane-modified indium tin oxide electrode surface by Au-S interaction; the surface concentration of electroactive Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2 is obviously higher than that in silica films.

Evaporation of a droplet of silica microsphere suspension on a polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) blend film with isolated holes in its surface has been exploited as a means of particles self-assembly. During the retraction of the contact line of the droplet, spontaneous dewetting combined with the strong capillary force pack the silica microspheres into the holes in the polymer surface. Complex aggregates of colloids are formed after being exposed to acetone vapor. The morphology evolution of the underlying polymer film by exposure to acetone solvent vapor is responsible for the complex aggregates of colloids formation.

In this paper, mechanical properties of silica-filled epoxy resin are tested. The tests show that at elevated temperatures, the material’s properties (e.g. yield stress, flow stress, etc.) vary immonotonically with filler volume fraction. Nanoindentation test results suggest that an interface region, stronger than the matrix, is formed in the materials. The formation of the interface has positive effects on the yield strengths of materials. The addition of particles in the matrix produces a large disturbance in stress distribution, leading to stress concentration in the matrix. The stress concentration has negative effects on the yield strengths of materials. The calculation demonstrates that the maximum stress in samples varies immonotonically with particulate concentration. So, the immonotonic variation of mechanical behavior of materials may be rooted in the contradictory effects of the interface region and the stress concentration caused by particulate addition.
