(W0.5Al0.5)C-0.5 substoichiometric compound is synthesized by a combination of mechanical milling and high-pressure reactive sintering. X-ray diffraction is used to monitor the phase changes and crystallization of (W0.5Al0.5) C-0.5 during the whole reaction process. As a result, (W0.5Al0.5) C-0.5 is identified as the hexagonal WC-type belonging to the P-6m2 space group (No. 187), and the lattice parameters of (W0.5Al0.5)C-0.5 are calculated to be a = 2.907 (1) angstrom, c = 2.838 (1) angstrom, which are very similar to those of WC even if there are approximately 50 pct carbon vacancies in the cell of (W0.5Al0.5)C-0.5 as compared with WC. The substoichiometric (W0.5Al0.5)C-0.5 compound has a Vickers microhardness of 2385 +/- 70 kg mm(-2), which is as high as that of WC, while its density is far lower than that of WC.

The aggregate structure of the discotic compound 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexakispentyloxytriphenylene (HPT) was studied both for the crystalline state and the liquid crystalline state by using electron crystallography and a molecular simulation approach. In the crystalline state, HPT was found to adopt an orthorhombic P-2212 space group with cell parameters a = 36.73 Angstrom, b = 27.99 Angstrom and c = 4.91 Angstrom. Molecular packing calculations were conducted to elucidate the molecular conformation and mutual orientational characteristics in the different states. Phase transitions and relationships are discussed from a structural point of view.

An experiment to study exotic two-proton emission from excited levels of the odd-Z nucleus P-28 was performed at the National Laboratory of Heavy Ion Research-Radioactive Ion Beam Line (HIRFL-RIBLL) facility. The projectile P-28 at the energy of 46.5 MeV/u was bombarding a Au-197 target to populate the excited states via Coulomb excitation. Complete-kinematics measurements were realized by the array of silicon strip detectors and the CsI + PIN telescope. Two-proton events were selected and the relativistic-kinematics reconstruction was carried out. The spectrum of relative momentum and opening angle between two protons was deduced from Monte Carlo simulations. Experimental results show that two-proton emission from P-28 excited states less than 17.0 MeV is mainly two-body sequential emission or three-body simultaneous decay in phase space. The present simulations cannot distinguish these two decay modes. No obvious diproton emission was found.

Sequential deprotonations of meso-(p-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrins (p-OHTPPH2) in DMF + H2O (V/V = 1:1) mixture have been verified to result in the appearance of hyperporphyrin spectra. However, when the deprotonations of these p-OHTPPH2 are carried out in DMF, the spectral changes differ considerably from those in the mixture mentioned above. At low [OH-], the optical spectra in the visible region are still considered to have characteristics of hyperporphyrin spectra. Further deprotonation at much higher basicity makes the optical spectra form three-banded spectra similar to those in the acidic solution. To clarify the molecular origins of these changes, UV-vis, resonance Raman (RR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1 NMR) experiments are carried out. Our data give evidence that p-OHTPPH2 in DMF can be further deprotonated of pyrrolic-H by higher concentrated NaOH, due to an aprotic medium like DMF effectively weakening the basicity of the porphyrin relative to that of the NaOH, and coordinates with two sodium ions (except the sodium ions that interact with the peripherial phenoxide anions) to form the sodium complexes of p-OHTPPH2 (Na2P, to lay a strong emphasis on the sodium ions that coordinate with the central nitrogen atom), which can be regarded as the porphyrin anions being perturbed by the sodium cations due to their highly ionic character.

An analytical solution for the three-dimensional scattering and diffraction of plane P-waves by a hemispherical alluvial valley with saturated soil deposits is developed by employing Fourier-Bessel series expansion technique. Unlike previous studies, in which the saturated soil deposits were simulated with the single-phase elastic theory, in this paper, they are simulated with Biot's dynamic theory for saturated porous media, and the half space is assumed as a single-phase elastic medium. The effects of the dimensionless frequency, the incidence angle of P-wave and the porosity of soil deposits on the surface displacement magnifications of the hemispherical alluvial valley are investigated. Numerical results show that the existence of a saturated hemispherical alluvial valley has much influence on the surface displacement magnifications. It is more reasonable to simulate soil deposits with Biot's dynamic theory when evaluating the displacement responses of a hemispherical alluvial valley with an incidence of P-waves.

In this paper the authors prove that the generalized positive p selfadjoint (GPpS) operators in Banach space satisfy the generalized Schwarz inequality, solve the maximal dissipative extension representation of p dissipative operators in Banach space by using the inequality and introducing the generalized indefinite inner product (GIIP) space, and apply the result to a certain type of Schrodinger operator.

We consider adhesive contact between a rigid sphere of radius R and a graded elastic half-space with Young's modulus varying with depth according to a power law E = E-0(z/c(0))(k) (0 < k < 1) while Poisson's ratio v remaining a constant. Closed-form analytical solutions are established for the critical force, the critical radius of contact area and the critical interfacial stress at pull-off. We highlight that the pull-off force has a simple solution of P-cr= -(k+3)pi R Delta gamma/2 where Delta gamma is the work of adhesion and make further discussions with respect to three interesting limits: the classical JKR solution when k = 0, the Gibson solid when k --> 1 and v = 0.5, and the strength limit in which the interfacial stress reaches the theoretical strength of adhesion at pull-off. Au colloids were prepared by irradiation with a Nd:YAG laser. Au nanoparticles were characterized by absorption spectra, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. It is found that the wavelength of the laser has no effect on the size but the number of the Au nanoparticles. By irradiating a transparent silica gel doped with gold ions with the focused laser in the gel and subsequent exposing in air, a space-selective pattern of letter "P" consisting of Au nanoparticles was observed inside the silica gel.

Up to now, in vivo studies on the toxic effects of microcystins (MCs) on the ultrastructures of fish liver have been very limited. The phytoplanktivorous silver carp was injected i.p. with extracted hepatotoxic microcystins (mainly MC-RR and -LR) at a dose of 1000 mu g MC-LReq. kg(-1) body weight, showing a time-dependent ultrastructural change in liver as well as significant increases in enzyme activity of plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). We observed for the first time the occurrence of a large amount of activated secondary lysosomes, which might be an adaptive mechanism to eliminate or lessen cell damage caused by MCs through lysosome activation. Quantitative and qualitative determinations of MCs in the liver were conducted by HPLC and LC-MS2, respectively. MCs concentration in the liver reached the maximum (114.20 mu g g(-1) dry weight) after 3 h post-injection, and then rapidly dropped to 7.57 mu g g(-1) dry weight at 48 h, indicating a deputation of 99% accumulated MC-LReq. On the other hand, a decrease trend in glutathione (GSH) concentration was observed in the liver of silver carp while the activity of glutathione S-transferase (GST) increased significantly after injection. The high tolerance of silver carp to MCs might be due to the high basic GSH level in their liver, and/or an increased GSH synthesis. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Phosphor-doped nano-crystalline silicon ((n))nc-Si:H) films are successfully grown on the p-type (100) oriented crystal silicon ((p) c-Si) substrate by conventional plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition method. The films are obtained using high H-2 diluted SiH4 as a reaction gas source and using PH3 as the doping gas source of phosphor atoms. Futhermore, the heterojunction diodes are also fabricated by using (n)nc-Si:H films and (p)c-Si substrate. I-V properties are investigated in the temperature range of 230-420K. The experimental results domenstrate that (n)nc-Si:H/(p) c-Si heterojunction is a typical abrupt heterojunction having good rectifing and temperature properties. Carrier transport mechanisms are tunneling - recombination model at forward bias voltages. In the range of low bias voltages ( V-F< 0.8 V), the current is determined by recombination at the (n)nc-Si:H side of the space charge region, while the current becomes tunneing at higher bias voltages( V-F>1.0 V). The present heterojunction has high reverse breakdown voltage ( > - 75 V) and low reverse current (approximate to nA).

The ability of the Evpatoria RT-70 radar complex to perform research on space debris was investigated in four trial experiments during 2001-2003. The echo-signals of 25 objects at geostationary, highly elliptical and medium-altitude orbits were recorded on magnetic tapes at radio telescopes in Russia, Italy, China and Poland. The multi-antenna system configuration gives potential to supplement the classic radar data with precise angular observations using the technique of Very Long Baseline Interferometry. The first stage of such processing was fulfilled by the correlator in N. Novgorod, Russia. The cross-correlation of transmitted and received signals was obtained for the 11 objects on the Evpatoria-Bear Lakes, Evpatoria-Urumqi and Evpatoria-Noto baselines. This activity also promoted developing the optical observations of geostationary objects, conducted for the improvement of the radar target ephemerides. (C) 2004 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. We have studied the sequential tunneling of doped weakly coupled GaAs/ALAs superlattices (SLs), whose ground state of the X valley in AlAS layers is designed to be located between the ground state (E(GAMMA1)) and the first excited state (E(GAMMA2)) of the GAMMA valley in GaAs wells. The experimental results demonstrate that the high electric field domain in these SLs is attributed to the GAMMA-X sequential tunneling instead of the usual sequential resonant tunneling between subbands in adjacent wells. Within this kind of high field domain, electrons from the ground state in the GaAs well tunnel to the ground state of the X valley in the nearest AlAs layer, then through very rapid real-space transfer relax from the X valley in the AlAs layer to the ground state of the GAMMA valley of the next GaAs well.

We have studied the sequential resonant tunneling of doped weakly coupled GaAs/AlAs superlattices under hydrostatic pressure up to 4.5 kbar. The pressure coefficient obtained from the experiment, 15.3 meV/kbar, provides a strong evidence for the formation of the electric field domain due to Gamma-X sequential resonant tunneling, At the same time, we have observed the transition between two kinds of sequential resonant tunneling processes within the pressure range from 0 to 4.5 kbar, where the transition pressure between Gamma-Gamma and Gamma-X sequential resonant tunneling is P-t similar to 1.6 kbar. For P < P-t, the electric field domain is formed by Gamma-Gamma sequential resonant tunneling, while for P > P-t, the electric field domain is preferably formed by Gamma-X sequential resonant tunneling. An experiment of a S-29 beam bombarding a Au-197 target at an energy of 49.2 MeV/u has been performed to study the two-proton correlated emission from S-29 excited states. Complete-kinematics measurements were carried out in the experiment. The relative momentum, opening angle, and relative energy of two protons, as well as the invariant mass of the final system, were deduced by relativistic-kinematics reconstruction. The Si-27-p-p coincident events were picked out under strict conditions and the phenomenon of p-p correlations was observed among these events. The mechanisms of two-proton emission were analyzed in a simple schematic model, in which the extreme decay modes like He-2 cluster emission, three-body phase-space decay, and two-body sequential emission were taken into account. Associated with the Monte Carlo simulations, the present results show that two protons emitted from the excited states between 9.6 MeV and 10.4 MeV exhibit the features of He-2 cluster decay with a branching ratio of 29(-11)(+10)%.

The real-space recursion method and unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation have been applied to calculate the density of states of various Co perovskite, CeCoO3, SrCoO3 and Sr1-xCexCoO3. We have studied the magnetically ordered states of these Co perovskites in an enlarged double cell, and find its various magnetic structures due to the occupancy of 3d band and its interaction with neighboring Co ions. In this study, we have studied the p-d hybridization of the three Co perovskites, we find t(2g) electrons are localized and the flat e(g) band is responsible for the itinerant behavior, and although the rare earth elements itself contribute little to the DOS at the Fermi energy, the DOS at Fermi energy and the magnetic moment changed consequently because of different valence of Co ions in these compounds and p-d hybridization effect is very important.
