Thoroughly understanding AFM tip-surface interactions is crucial for many experimental studies and applications. It is important to realize that despite its simple appearance, the system of tip and sample surface involves multiscale interactions. In fact, the system is governed by a combination of molecular force (like the van der Waals force), its macroscopic representations (such as surface force) and gravitational force (a macroscopic force). Hence, in the system, various length scales are operative, from sub-nanoscale (at the molecular level) to the macroscopic scale. By integrating molecular forces into continuum equations, we performed a multiscale analysis and revealed the nonlocality effect between a tip and a rough solid surface and the mechanism governing liquid surface deformation and jumping. The results have several significant implications for practical applications. For instance, nonlocality may affect the measurement accuracy of surface morphology. At the critical state of liquid surface jump, the ratio of the gap between a tip and a liquid dome (delta) over the dome height (y(o)) is approximately (n-4) (for a large tip), which depends on the power law exponent n of the molecular interaction energy. These findings demonstrate that the multiscale analysis is not only useful but also necessary in the understanding of practical phenomena involving molecular forces. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Extracellular neural recording requires neural probes having more recording sites as well as limited volumes. With its mechanical characteristic and abundant process method, Silicon is a kind of material fit for producing neural probe. Silicon on insulator (SOI) is adopted in this paper to fabricate neural probes. The uniformity and manufacturability are improved. The fabricating process and testing results of a series of Multi channel micro neural probes were reported. The thickness of the probe is 15 mu m-30 mu m. The typical impedance characteristics of the record sites are around 2M Omega at 1k Hz. The performance of the neural probe in-vivo was tested on anesthetic rat. The recorded neural spike was typically around 140 mu V. Spike recorded from individual site could exceed 700 mu V. The average signal noise ratio was 7 or more.

Multi-frame image super-resolution (SR) aims to utilize information from a set of low-resolution (LR) images to compose a high-resolution (HR) one. As it is desirable or essential in many real applications, recent years have witnessed the growing interest in the problem of multi-frame SR reconstruction. This set of algorithms commonly utilizes a linear observation model to construct the relationship between the recorded LR images to the unknown reconstructed HR image estimates. Recently, regularization-based schemes have been demonstrated to be effective because SR reconstruction is actually an ill-posed problem. Working within this promising framework, this paper first proposes two new regularization items, termed as locally adaptive bilateral total variation and consistency of gradients, to keep edges and flat regions, which are implicitly described in LR images, sharp and smooth, respectively. Thereafter, the combination of the proposed regularization items is superior to existing regularization items because it considers both edges and flat regions while existing ones consider only edges. Thorough experimental results show the effectiveness of the new algorithm for SR reconstruction. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Here we prepare carbon nanotubes modified with ammonium persulfate, very short carbon nanotubes with 50-100 nanometer length was obtained, and the higher P potential of 52 mV was detected, these supporting the successful modification. HeLa cells were irradiated with P rays via adding or absent above functionalized carbon nanotubes (f- WCNTs) into cell culture medium with different concentration and radiation dosage. Confocal microscopy images and fluorescence-labeled DNA detection verified the successfully pure multi-walled carbon nanotubes (p-WCNTs) and f-WCNTs penetrated into cells. Compared with pure radiation, by MTT test, f-WCNTs induced cell death markedly with about 8.7 times higher than former one under little dose of radiation; meanwhile, no obvious toxicity was observed both in p-WCNTs and f-WCNTs without of radiation exposure. We hypothesized that large amount of hydroxyl and carbonyl organs on the surface of very short f-WCNTs changed into free radicals result from radiations led cell damage. These implied that f-WCNTs could be regarded as a new radiosensitizer.

A 2.5-D and 3-D multi-fold GPR survey was carried out in the Archaeological Park of Aquileia (northern Italy). The primary objective of the study was the identification of targets of potential archaeological interest in an area designated by local archaeological authorities. The second geophysical objective was to test 2-D and 3-D multi-fold methods and to study localised targets of unknown shape and dimensions in hostile soil conditions. Several portions of the acquisition grid were processed in common offset (CO), common shot (CSG) and common mid point (CMP) geometry. An 8×8 m area was studied with orthogonal CMPs thus achieving a 3-D subsurface coverage with azimuthal range limited to two normal components. Coherent noise components were identified in the pre-stack domain and removed by means of FK filtering of CMP records. Stack velocities were obtained from conventional velocity analysis and azimuthal velocity analysis of 3-D pre-stack gathers. Two major discontinuities were identified in the area of study. The deeper one most probably coincides with the paleosol at the base of the layer associated with activities of man in the area in the last 2500 years. This interpretation is in agreement with the results obtained from nearby cores and excavations. The shallow discontinuity is observed in a part of the investigated area and it shows local interruptions with a linear distribution on the grid. Such interruptions may correspond to buried targets of archaeological interest. The prominent enhancement of the subsurface images obtained by means of multi-fold techniques, compared with the relatively poor quality of the conventional single-fold georadar sections, indicates that multi-fold methods are well suited for the application to high resolution studies in archaeology.

In this study, we report the effects of ferricyanide on organisms based on the changes in physiological state and morphology of Escherichia coli (E coli) DH 5 alpha after being pretreated by ferricyanide. The impact on bacterial cell growth and viable rate of exposure to different concentrations of ferricyanide was determined, and the morphology change of E. coli was studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Finally, recovery test was used to evaluate the recovery ability of injured cells. The results showed that the effects on growth and morphology of E. coli were negligible when the concentration of ferricyanide was below 25.0 mM. While the results showed 50.8% inhibition of growth in the presence of 50.0 mM ferricyanide for 3 h, 89.6% viability was detected by flow cytometry (FCM) assay. AFM images proved that compact patches appeared on the bacterial surface and protected the bacterial viability. Furthermore, the results revealed that deterioration of bacterial surface closely related to the incubation time from 0.5 to 3 h at 100.0 mM ferricyanide. In the recovery test, microbial cell population and dissolved oxygen individually decreased 36.7% and 28.3% with 25.0 mM ferricyanide.

Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/thionine/gold nanoparticle composites were prepared by binding gold nanoparticles to the surfaces of thionine-coated carbon nanotubes. TEM images show gold nanoparticles distributed uniformly on nanotube walls and ends. UV-Vis, Raman, FT-IR, and zeta potential measurements were used to examine the properties of the resulting products. The composites demonstrate significant electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction. Although only gold nanoparticles were investigated here, the method could be easily extended to attach other metallic nanoparticles to the sidewalls of carbon nanotubes.
