The ionosphere is the ionized component of the Earth's upper atmosphere. Solar EUV radiation is the source of ionospheric ionization. Thus the ionosphere is affected strongly by the variations in solar radiation. Solar flares and solar eclipses can induce remarkable short time changes in solar radiation: the solar radiation would increase suddenly during solar flares and decrease significantly during solar eclipses. Solar flare and eclipse events not only affect directly the photochemical processes, but also affect the dynamic processes, and even affect the neutral atmosphere, which is strongly coupled with the ionosphere. The study on the ionospheric response to solar flares and eclipses can advance our knowledge on the ionosphere and its photochemical and dynamic processes and help us to evaluate the ionospheric parameters (such as ion loss coefficients). In addition, the study on the ionospheric responses to solar flares and eclipses is an important part of the ionospheric space weather, which can provide guides for space weather monitoring. This thesis devotes to the study on the ionospheric responses to solar flares and solar eclipses. I have developed two models to simulate the variations of solar EUV radiation during solar flares and solar eclipses, and involved in developing a 2D mid- and low-latitude ionospheric model. On the basis of some observed data and the ionospheric model, I study the temporal and spatial variations of the ionosphere during solar flares and eclipses, and investigate the influences of solar activity, solar zenith angle, neutral gas density, and magnetic dip angle on the ionospheric responses to solar flares and solar eclipses. The main points of my works and results are summarized as follows. 1. The ionospheric response to the X17.2 solar flare on October 28, 2003 was modeled via using a one-dimension theoretical ionospheric model. The simulated variation of TEC is in accordance with the observations, though there are some differences in the amplitude of the variation. Then I carried out a series of simulations to explore the local time and seasonal dependences of the ionospheric responses to solar flares. These calculations show that the ionospheric responses are largely related with the solar zenith angle (SZA). During the daytime (small SZA), most of the increases in electron density occur at altitudes below 300 km with a peak at around 115 km; whereas around sunrise and sunset (SZA>90°), the strongest ionospheric responses occur at much higher altitudes. The TEC increases slower at sunrise than at sunset, which is caused by the difference in the evolution of SZA at sunrise and sunset: SZA decreases with time at sunrise and increase with time at sunset. The ionospheric response is largest in summer and smallest in winter, which is also related to the seasonal difference of SZA. 2. Based on the observations from the ionosondes in Europe and the ionospheric model, I investigated the differences of the ionosphere responses to solar eclipses between the E-layer and F1-layer. Both the observation and simulation show that the decrease in foF1 due to the solar eclipses is larger than that in foE. This effect is due to that the F1 region locates at the transition height between the atomic ion layer and the molecular ion layer. With the revised model of solar radiation during solar flares, our model calculates the radiations from both the inside and outside of photosphere. Large discrepancy can be found between the observations and the calculations with an unrevised model, while the calculations with the revised model consist with the observations. 3. I also explore the effects of the F2-layer height, local time, solar cycle, and magnetic dip angle on the ionospheric responses to solar eclipses via using an ionospheric model and study on the solar zenith angle and the dip dependences by analyzing the data derived from 23 ionosonde stations during seven eclipse events. Both the measured and simulated results show that these factors have significant effect on the ionospheric response. The larger F2-layer height causes the smaller decrease in foF2, which is because that the electron density response decreases with height. The larger dip results in the smaller eclipse effect on the F2 layer, because the larger dip would cause the more diffusion from the top ionosphere which can make up for the plasma loss. The foF2 response is largest at midday and decreases with the increasing SZA. The foF2 response is larger at high solar activity than at low solar activity. The simulated results show that the local time and solar activity discrepancy of the eclipse effect mainly attribute to the difference of the background neutral gas density. 4. I carried out a statistical study on the latitudinal dependence of the ionospheric response to solar eclipses and modeled this latitudinal dependence by the ionospheric model. Both the observations and simulations show that the foF2 and TEC responses have the same latitudinal dependence: the eclipse effects on foF2 and TEC are smaller at low latitudes than at middle latitudes; at the middle latitudes (>40°), the eclipse effect decreases with increasing latitude. In addition, the simulated results show the change in electron temperature at the heights of above 300 km of low latitudes is much smaller than that at the same heights of middle latitudes. This is due to the smaller decrease in photoelectron production rate at its conjugate low heights. 5. By analyzing the observed data during the October 3, 2005 solar eclipse, I find some significant disturbances in the conjugate region of the eclipse region, including a decrease in Te, an increase in foF2 and TEC, and an uprising in hmF2. I also simulated the ionosphere behavior during this eclipse using a mid-low latitude ionospheric model. The simulations reproduce the measured ionospheric disturbances mentioned above in the conjugated hemisphere. The simulations show that the great loss of arriving photoelectron heat from the eclipse region is the principal driving source for the disturbances in the conjugate hemisphere.

In this paper, the effective coupling coefficient k(eff) and the self-coupling coefficient zeta(1) are introduced to describe the characteristic of gratings in a resonant situation when the effects of radiation and other partial waves coupling are considered. The dependence of these two coupling coefficients on grating tooth shapes and depths and the dimensions of graded refractive index (GRIN) waveguides is numerically analysed. The results show that the gratings with linear GRIN waveguides have the largest \k(eff)\. The possibility of realizing a complex-coupled DFB laser, even a pure gain or loss coupled DFB laser, employing only a real refractive index coupled grating is also discussed.

An effective coupling efficient is introduced for gain-coupled distributed feedback lasers with absorptive grating. When radiation and other partial wave coupling effects are considered, the effective coupling coefficient will change significantly. In some cases, it will become real, although both loss and index coupling are presented.

The method for the measurement of the pure mechanical wear loss for 321 stainless steel, 1045 steel and pure iron in the study of the synergy between corrosion and wear was studied, The methods studied included the measurement in distilled water, by cathodic protection and by adding inhibitor KI, and all were compared with the wear loss in air. The experiment showed that the pure mechanical wear losses and friction coefficients obtained by the three methods were close to each other and can be used to calculate the various wear components in the study of the interaction of corrosion and wear, but the measurements in distilled water for pure iron and 1045 steel are not recommended due to their corrosion.

In this research, asymmetrical cold rolling was produced by the difference in the coefficient of friction between rolls and sheets rather than the difference of roll radius or rotation speeds. The influence of friction coefficient ratio on the cross shear deformation, rolling pressure and torque was investigated using slab analysis. The results showed that the shear deformation zone length increased with the increase of the friction coefficient ratio. The rolling force decreased only under the condition that the friction coefficient ratio increased while the sum of the friction coefficients was held constant. As the reduction per pass was increased, the shear deformation zone length increased and the rolling force also increased. An increase of the front tension resulted in a decrease of the shear deformation zone length. An increase of back tension, however, led to an increase of the shear deformation zone length. The reduction of rolling torque for the work roll with higher surface roughness was greater than that for the work roll with lower surface roughness. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. In order to describe the effect of latent hardening on the macro-plastic behavior of foc-crystal, a new expression for hardening coefficient is proposed in which there are 12 material constants, each having clear physical meaning. And a method of material constant calibration is suggested and used to determine the material constants of copper and aluminum crystal. The simulated load-elongation curves along various crystallographic orientations are comparable with the experimental ones.

GaInP/GaAs dual-junction solar cell with a conversion efficiency of 25.2% has been fabricated using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) technique. Quantum efficiencies of the solar cell were measured within a temperature range from 25 to 160A degrees C. The results indicate that the quantum efficiencies of the subcells increase slightly with the increasing temperature. And red-shift phenomena of absorption limit for all subcells are observed by increasing the cell's work temperature, which are consistent with the viewpoint of energy gap narrowing effect. The short-circuit current density temperature coefficients dJ (sc)/dT of GaInP subcell and GaAs subcell are determined to be 8.9 and 7.4 mu A/cm(2)/A degrees C from the quantum efficiency data, respectively. And the open-circuit cell voltage temperature coefficients dV (oc)/dT calculated based on a theoretical equation are -2.4 mV/A degrees C and -2.1 mV/A degrees C for GaInP subcell and GaAs subcell.

Far-field spot compression without energy loss in main lob is of great significance to wireless laser communication. In this letter, we propose two schemes to obtain far-field spot compression without energy loss in main lob. One scheme is based on the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm. Using SA algorithm, we design the phase profile of the diffractive phase element (DPE). Using the designed DPE, far-field spot compression without energy loss in main lob is achieved. The other scheme is based on YG algorithm. By means of YG algorithm, we appropriately designed the DPE in the emitting plane. Using the DPE, far-field spot compression without energy loss in main lob is obtained. (c) 2007 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

A novel laser resonator for compensating depolarization loss that is due to thermally induced birefringence in active rod is reported. As this new structure being applied to an electro-optic Q-switched LIDA side-pumped Nd:YAG laser operating at a repetition rate of 1000 Hz, substantial reduction in depolarization loss has been observed, the output pulse energy is improved about 56% from that of a traditional resonator without compensation structure. With incident pump energy of 450 mJ per pulse, linearly polarized output energy of 30 mJ per pulse is achieved, the pulse duration is less than 15 ns, and the peak power of pulse is about 2 MW. The extinction ratio of laser beam is better than 10:1, and the beam divergence is 1.3 mrad with beam diameter of around 2.5 mm. (c) 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The optical loss coefficient at 1053-nm wavelength, influenced by Fe ions in N31-type Nd-doped phosphate laser glass, was determined precisely and analyzed in detail. It is found that the optical loss coefficient per unit of Fe concentration (cm^(-1)/ppmw) increases with Fe concentration in the range of 0---300 ppmw, but it approaches a constant as the Fe concentration is larger than 300 ppmw. Such a concentration effect is due to a shift in the redox equilibrium between Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions in the glass. The effect of oxygen pressure, temperature, and variable valence states of other metal ions in glass samples on the optical loss is also discussed.

We report on the fabrication and characterization of low-loss planar and stripe waveguides in a Nd3+-doped glass by 6 MeV oxygen-ion implantation at a dose of 1x10(15) ions/cm(2). The dark mode spectroscopy of the planar waveguide was measured using a prism coupling arrangement. The refractive index profile of the planar waveguide was reconstructed from a code based on the reflectivity calculation method. The results indicate that a refractive index enhanced region as well as an optical barrier have been created after the ion beam processing. The near-field mode profiles of the stripe waveguide were obtained by an end-fire coupling arrangement, by which three quasitransverse electric modes were observed. After annealing, the propagation losses of the planar and stripe waveguides were reduced to be similar to 0.5 and similar to 1.8 dB/cm, respectively. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Low loss index enhanced planar waveguides in Nd3+-doped silicate glass were fabricated by 3.0 MeV C+ ion implantation. The enhancement of the refractive index confined the light propagating in the waveguide. The prism-coupling method was used to measure dark modes in the waveguide. The effective refractive indices of the waveguide were obtained based on the dark modes. The moving fiber method was applied to measure the waveguide propagation loss. Loss measured in non-annealed samples is about 0.6 dB/cm. And the waveguide mode optical near-field output at 633 nm was presented. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

gamma-LiAlO2 (LAO) single crystal has been grown by the Czochralski method. However, its quality was deteriorated due to lithium volatilization during the crystal growth. The full width at half maximum value drops from 116.9 to 44.2 arc sec after the LAO slice was treated by vapor transport equilibration at 1000, 1100, and 1200 degrees C/48 h in sequence. The treated slice shows higher optical transmission than the as-grown one in the measured wavelength range of 190-1900 nm, meanwhile, its absorption edge exhibits a blueshift. According to Raman spectra, the treated slice has homogeneous quality at different depths from surface to 0.01 mm. The expansion coefficient of the treated slice for a axis drops from 17.2398x10(-6)/degrees C to 16.5240x10(-6)/degrees C, and that for c axis drops from 10.7664x10(-6)/degrees C to 10.0786x10(-6)/degrees C.
