A strain of microalgae (Anabaena siamensis) had been cultured in a miniaturized bioreactor during a retrievable satellite flight for 15 days. By means of remote sensing equipment installed in the satellite, we gained the growth curve of microalgae population in space every day in real time. The curve indicated that the growth of microalgae in space was slower than the control on ground. Inoculation of the retrieved microalgae culture showed that the growth rate was distinctively higher than ground control. But after several generations, both cultures indicated similar growth rates. Those data showed that algae, can adapt to space environment easily which may be valuable for designing more complex bioreactor and controlled ecological life support system in future experiment. A temperature-controlled pool boiling (TCPB) device has been developed to study the bubble behavior and heat transfer in pool boiling phenomenon both in normal gravity and in microgravity. A thin platinum wire of 60 mu m in diameter and 30 mm in length is simultaneously used as heater and thermometer. The fluid is R113 at 0.1 MPa and subcooled by 26 degrees C nominally for all cases. Three modes of heat transfer, namely single-phase natural convection, nucleate boiling, and two-mode transition boiling, are observed in the experiment both in microgravity aboard the 22nd Chinese recoverable satellite and in normal gravity on the ground before and after the space flight. Dynamic behaviors of vapor bubbles observed in these experiments are reported and analyzed in the present paper. In the regime of fully developed nucleate boiling, the interface oscillation due to coalescence of adjacent tiny bubbles is the primary reason of the departure of bubbles in microgravity. On the contrary, in the discrete bubble regime, it's observed that there exist three critical bubble diameters in microgravity, dividing the whole range of the observed bubbles into four regimes. Firstly, tiny bubbles are continually forming and growing on the heating surface before departing slowly from the wire when their sizes exceed some value of the order of 10(-1) mm. The bigger bubbles with about several millimeters in diameter stay on the wire, oscillate along the wire, and coalesce with adjacent bubbles. The biggest bubble with diameter of the order of 10 mm, which was formed immediately after the onset of boiling, stays continuously

Recently, Chen and Gao [Chen, S., Gao, H., 2007. Bio-inspired mechanics of reversible adhesion: orientation-dependent adhesion strength for non-slipping adhesive contact with transversely isotropic elastic materials. J. Mech. Phys. solids 55, 1001-1015] studied the problem of a rigid cylinder in non-slipping adhesive contact with a transversely isotropic solid subjected to an inclined pulling force. An implicit assumption made in their study was that the contact region remains symmetric with respect to the center of the cylinder. This assumption is, however, not self-consistent because the resulting energy release rates at two contact edges, which are supposed to be identical, actually differ from each other. Here we revisit the original problem of Chen and Gao and derive the correct solution by removing this problematic assumption. The corrected solution provides a proper insight into the concept of orientation-dependent adhesion strength in anisotropic elastic solids. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Space ordered 1.3μm self-assembled InAs QDs are grown on GaAs(100) vicinal substrates by MOCVD. Photoluminescence measurements show that the dots on vicinal substrates have a much higher PL intensity and a narrower FWHM than those of dots on exact substrates, which indicates better material quality. To obtain 1.3μm emissions of InAs QDs, the role of the so called InGaAs strain cap layer (SCL) and the strain buffer layer (SBL) in the strain relaxation process in quantum dots is studied. While the use of SBL results only in a small change of emission wavelength,SCL can extend the QD's emission over 1.3μm due to the effective strain reducing effect of SCL.

This paper presents the vulnerabilities of single event effects (SEEs) simulated by heavy ions on ground and observed oil SJ-5 research satellite in space for static random access memories (SRAMs). A single event upset (SEU) prediction code has been used to estimate the proton-induced upset rates based oil the ground test curve of SEU cross-section versus heavy ion linear energy transfer (LET). The result agrees with that of the flight data.

Astudy of the magnetic properties of 1 demonstrates that it exhibits antiferromagnetic coupling interactions.

Self-assembly of the building block [Cu(oxbe)](-) with Mn(II) led to a novel coordination polymer {[Cu(oxbe)]Mn(H2O)(Cu(oxbe)(DMF)]}(n).nDMF.nH(2)O, where H(3)oxbe is a new dissymmetrical ligand N-benzoato-N'-(2-aminoethyl)-oxamido and DMF = dimethylformamide. The crystal forms in the triclinic system, space group P(1)over-bar, with a = 9.260(4) angstorm, b = 12.833(5) angstrom, c = 15.274(6) angstrom , alpha = 76.18(3)degrees, beta = 82.7(3)degrees, gamma = 82.31(3)degrees, and Z = 2. The crystal structure of the title complex reveals that the two-dimensional bimetallic layers are constructed of (CuMnII)-Mn-II-Cu-II chains linked together by carboxylate bridge and hydrogen bonds help to produce a novel three-dimensional channel-like structure. The magnetic susceptibility measurements (5-300 K) were analyzed by means of the Hamiltonian (H)over-cap = -2J(S)over-cap (Mn)((S)over-cap(Cu1) + (S)over-cap(Cu2)), leading to J = -17.4 cm(-1).
