We study the electronic structures and magnetic properties of the anatase TiO2 doped with 3d transition metals (V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni), using first-principles total energy calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). Using a molecular-orbital bonding model, the electronic structures of the doped anatase TiO2 are well understood. A band coupling model based on d-d level repulsions between the dopant ions is proposed to understand the chemical trend of the magnetic ordering. Ferromagnetism is found to be stabilized in the V-, Cr-, and Co-doped samples if there are no other carrier native defects or dopants. The ferromagnetism in the Cr- and Co-doped samples may be weakened by the donor defects. In the Mn-, and Fe-doped samples, the ferromagnetism can be enhanced by the acceptor and donor defects, respectively.

ZnS:Mn nanoparticles of the cubic zinc blende structure with the average sizes of about 3 nm were synthesized using a coprecipitation method and their optical and magnetic properties were investigated. Two emission bands were observed in doped nanoparitcles and attributed to the defect-related emission of ZnS and the Mn2+ emission, respectively. With the increase of Mn2+ concentration, the luminescence intensities of these two emission bands increased and the ZnS emission band shifted to lower energy. Based on the luminescence excitation spectra of Mn2+, the 3d(5) level structure of Mn2+ in ZnS nanoparticles is similar to that in bulk ZnS:Mn, regardless of Mn2+ concentration. Magnetic measurements showed that all the samples exhibit paramagnetic behavior and no antiferromagnetic interaction between Mn2+ ions exists, which are in contrast to bulk ZnS:Mn. Electronic structure and magnetic coupling properties of Gd-doped AlN: first-principles calculations
Resumo:
In this work, the electronic structure and magnetic coupling properties of Gd doped AlN have been investigated using first-principles method. We found that in the AlN:Gd system, due to the s-f coupling allowed by the symmetry, the exchange splitting of the conduction band is much larger than that of the valence band, which makes the electron-mediated ferromagnetism possible in this material. This property is also confirmed by the energy differences between anti-ferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phase for Al14Gd2N16 with different concentrations of electrons (holes), as well as by the calculated exchange constants. The result indicates that Gd-doped AlN is a promising candidate for the applications in future spintronic devices.

A systematic investigation of crystallographic and intrinsic magnetic properties of the hydrides R3Fe29 - xVxHy (R = Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy) has been performed in this work. The lattice constants a, b, and c and the unit cell volume of R3Fe29 - xVxHy decrease with increasing rare-earth atomic number from Nd to Dy, except for Ce, reflecting the lanthanide contraction. Hydrogenation results in regular anisotropic expansions along the a-, b-, and c-axes in this series of hydrides. Abnormal crystallographic and magnetic properties of Ce3Fe27.5V1.5H6.5, like Ce3Fe27.5V1.5, suggest that the Ce ion is non-triply ionized. Hydrogenation leads to the increase in both Curie temperature for all the compounds and in the saturation magnetization at 4.2 K and RT for R3Fe29 - xVx with R = Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, and Dy, except for Tb. Hydrogenation also leads to a decrease in the anisotropy field at 4.2 K and RT for R3Fe29 - xVx with R = Y, Ce, Nd, Gd, Tb, and Dy, except for Sm. The Ce3Fe27.5V1.5 and Gd3Fe28.4V0.6 show the larger storage of hydrogen with y = 6.5 and 6.9 in these hydrides. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Fe-N films containing the Fe16N2 phase were prepared in a high-vacuum system of ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD). The composition and structure of the films were analysed by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. Magnetic properties of the films were measured by a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The phase composition of Fe-N films depend sensitively on the N/Fe atomic arrival ratio and the deposition temperature. An Fe16N2 film was deposited successfully on a GaAs (1 0 0) substrate by IBAD at a N/Fe atomic arrival ratio of 0.12. The gram-saturation magnetic moment of the Fe16N2 film obtained is 237 emu/g at room temperature, the possible cause has been analysed and discussed. Hysteresis loops of Fe16N2 have been measured, the coercive force H-c is about 120 Oe, which is much larger than the value for Fe, this means the Fe16N2 sample exhibits a large uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Magnetic nanoparticles of nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4) have been synthesized by co-precipitation route using stable ferric and nickel salts with sodium hydroxide as the precipitating agent and oleic acid as the surfactant. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) analyses confirmed the formation of single-phase nickel ferrite nanoparticles in the range 8-28 nm depending upon the annealing temperature of the samples during the synthesis. The size of the particles (d) was observed to be increasing linearly with annealing temperature of the sample while the coercivity with particle size goes through a maximum, peaking at similar to 11 nm and then decreases for larger particles. Typical blocking effects were observed below similar to 225 K for all the prepared samples. The superparamagnetic blocking temperature (T-B) was found to be increasing with increasing particle size that has been attributed to the increased effective anisotropy energy of the nanoparticles. The saturation moment of all the samples was found much below the bulk value of nickel ferrite that has been attributed to the disordered surface spins or dead/inert layer in these nanoparticles. The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) tenser coefficients of LiXO3 (X = I; Nb or Ta) type complex crystals have been calculated using the chemical bond theory of complex crystals. Contributions of each type of bond to the total second-order NLO coefficient d(ij) and the linear susceptibility X are quantitatively determined. All tensor values thus calculated are in good agreement with experimental data. The Li-O bonds are found to be an important group in the contributions to the total NLO tenser coefficient, especially for those in LiNbO3 and LiTaO3. The importance of Li-O bonds depends on the environment of Li atom in these crystals.

Semiconductor nanostructures show many special physical properties associated with quantum confinement effects, and have many applications in the opto-electronic and microelectronic fields. However, it is difficult to calculate their electronic states by the ordinary plane wave or linear combination of atomic orbital methods. In this paper, we review some of our works in this field, including semiconductor clusters, self-assembled quantum dots, and diluted magnetic semiconductor quantum dots. In semiconductor clusters we introduce energy bands and effective-mass Hamiltonian of wurtzite structure semiconductors, electronic structures and optical properties of spherical clusters, ellipsoidal clusters, and nanowires. In self-assembled quantum dots we introduce electronic structures and transport properties of quantum rings and quantum dots, and resonant tunneling of 3-dimensional quantum dots. In diluted magnetic semiconductor quantum dots we introduce magnetic-optical properties, and magnetic field tuning of the effective g factor in a diluted magnetic semiconductor quantum dot. The electronic and magnetic structures of Nd2Fe17 and Nd2Fe17N3 have been calculated using the first-principle, spin-polarized orthogonalized linear combination of atomic orbitals method. Comparative studies of the two materials reveal important effects of the nitrogen atoms (at 9e site) on the electronic and magnetic structures. Results are presented for the total density of states, site-projected partial density of states and the spin magnetic moments on four nonequivalent Fe sites. The highest magnetic moments are found to be located on the 6c site for Nd2Fe17 and on the 9d site for Nd2Fe17N3, in agreement with the neutron and Mossbauer experiments. The variation trends of the magnetic moments on different Fe sites are discussed in terms of the separation between Fe and N atoms. Compared with Nd2Fe17, an increase in the exchange splitting of the Fe d band is found in Nd2Fe17N3, which accounts for its higher Curie temperature as observed in experiments. The calculated results show that the nitrogen atoms are charge acceptors in these compounds.

Within the framework of classic electromagnetic theories, we have studied the sign of refractive index of optical medias with the emphases on the roles of the electric and magnetic losses and gains. Starting from the Maxwell equations for an isotropic and homogeneous media, we have derived the general form of the complex refractive index and its relation with the complex electric permittivity and magnetic permeability, i.e. n = root epsilon mu, in which the intrinsic electric and magnetic losses and gains are included as the imaginary parts of the complex permittivity and permeability, respectively, as epsilon = epsilon(r) + i(epsilon i) and mu = mu(r) + i mu(i). The electric and magnetic losses are present in all passive materials, which correspond, respectively, to the positive imaginary permittivity and permeability epsilon(i) > 0 and mu(i) > 0. The electric and magnetic gains are present in materials where external pumping sources enable the light to be amplified instead of attenuated, which correspond, respectively, to the negative imaginary permittivity and permeability epsilon(i) < 0 and mu(i) < 0. We have analyzed and determined uniquely the sign of the refractive index, for all possible combinations of the four parameters epsilon(r), mu(r), epsilon(i), and mu(i), in light of the relativistic causality. A causal solution requires that the wave impedance be positive Re {Z} > 0. We illustrate the results for all cases in tables of the sign of refractive index. One of the most important messages from the sign tables is that, apart from the well-known case where simultaneously epsilon < 0 and mu < 0, there are other possibilities for the refractive index to be negative n < 0, for example, for epsilon(r) < 0, mu(r) > 0, epsilon(i) > 0, and mu(i) > 0, the refractive index is negative n < 0 provided mu(i)/epsilon(i) > mu(r)/vertical bar epsilon(r)vertical bar. Calculations of the electronic structure and the density of states of GaN with Mn are carried out by means of first-principles plane-wave pesudopotential method based on density functional theory. The results reveal a 100% spin polarized impurity band in band structure of Ga1-xMnxN due to hybridization of Mn 3d and N 2p orbitals. The material is half metallic and suited for spin injectors. In addition, a peak of refractive index can be observed near the energy gap. The absorption coefficient increases in the UV region with the increase of the Mn content.

We have theoretically investigated the energy band structures of two typical magnetic superlattices formed by perpendicular or parallel magnetization ferromagnetic stripes periodically deposited on a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), where the magnetic profile in the perpendicular magnetization is of inversion anti-symmetry, but of inversion symmetry in parallel magnetization, respectively. We have shown that the energy bands of perpendicular magnetization display the spin-splitting and transverse wave-vector symmetry, while the energy bands of the parallel magnetization exhibit spin degeneration and transverse wave-vector asymmetry. These distinguishing spin-dependent and transverse wave-vector asymmetry features are essential for future spintronics devices applications. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The electronic structure and optical gain of wurtzite ZnO nanowires are investigated in the framework of effective-mass envelope-function theory. We found that as the elliptical aspect ratio e increases to be larger than a critical value, the hole ground states may change from optically dark to optically bright. The optical gain of ZnO nanowires increases as the hole density increases. For elliptical wire with large e, the y-polarized mode gain can be several thousand cm(-1), while the x-poiarized mode gain may be 26 times smaller than the former, so they can be used as ultraviolet linearly polarized lasers.
