A seven-state phase frequency detector (S.S PFD) is proposed for fast-locking charge pump based phase-locked loops (CPPLLs) in this paper. The locking time of the PLL can be significantly reduced by using the seven-state PFD to inject more current into the loop filter. In this stage, the bandwidth of the PLL is increased or decreased to track the phase difference of the reference signal and the feedback signal. The proposed architecture is realized in a standard 0.35 mu m 2P4M CMOS process with a 3.3V supply voltage. The locking time of the proposed PLL is 1.102 mu s compared with the 2.347 mu s of the PLL based on continuous-time PFD and the 3.298 mu s of the PLL based on the pass-transistor tri-state PFD. There are 53.05% and 66.59% reductions of the locking time. The simulation results and the comparison with other PLLs demonstrate that the proposed seven-state PFD is effective to reduce locking time.

A low-power, highly linear, multi-standard, active-RC filter with an accurate and novel tuning architec-ture is presented. It exhibits 1EEE 802. 11a/b/g (9.5 MHz) and DVB-H (3 MHz, 4 MHz) application. The filter exploits digitally-controlled polysilicon resistor banks and a phase lock loop type automatic tuning system. The novel and complex automatic frequency calibration scheme provides better than 4 comer frequency accuracy, and it can be powered down after calibration to save power and avoid digital signal interference. The filter achieves OIP3 of 26 dBm and the measured group delay variation of the receiver filter is 50 ns (WLAN mode). Its dissipation is 3.4 mA in RX mode and 2.3 mA (only for one path) in TX mode from a 2.85 V supply. The dissipation of calibration consumes 2 mA. The circuit has been fabricated in a 0.35μm 47 GHz SiGe BiCMOS technology; the receiver and transmitter filter occupy 0.21 mm~2 and 0.11 mm~2 (calibration circuit excluded), respectively.

The application of digital holographic interferometry on the quantitative measurement of the domain inversion in a RuO2: LiNbO3 crystal wafer is presented. The recorded holograms are reconstructed by the angular spectrum method. From the reconstructed phase distribution we can clearly observe the boundary between the inverted and un-inverted domain regions. Comparisons with the results reconstructed by use of the Fresnel transform method are given. Factors that influence the measurement include the spectrum filter size and the spectrum movement are discussed. The spectrum filter size has an effect on the measurement of the details. Although the spectrum movement affects every single reconstructed image, it has no influence on the final measurement.

The idler is separated from the co-propagating pump in a degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) with a symmetrical parametric loop mirror (PALM), which is composed of two identical SOAs and a 70 m highly-nonlinear photonic crystal fiber (HN-PCF). The signal and pump are coupled into the symmetrical PALM from different ports, respectively. After the DFWM based wavelength conversion (WC) in the clockwise and anticlockwise, the idler exits from the signal port, while the pump outputs from its input port. Therefore, the pump is effectively suppressed in the idler channel without a high-speed tunable filter. Contrast to a traditional PALM, the DFWM based conversion efficiency is increased greatly, and the functions of the amplification and the WC are integrated in the smart SOA and HN-PCF PALM. We propose a configuration for suppressing pumps in a broad- and flat-hand tunable nondegenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) wavelength converter. The signal and pumps are coupled into a highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber symmetrical Sagnac loop. After the FWM wavelength conversion in the loop, the idler is separated from the pumps without a filter. In our experiment, a flat wavelength conversion bandwidth of 36 rim, conversion efficiency of-11 dB., pump-to-signal suppression ratio of 48 dB, and idler-to-pump suppression ratio of 15 dB are achieved.

We report on the experimental demonstration of a spectrum shaping filter, which is formed by inserting a fiber polarization controller (PC) in to a Sagnac loop. Pedestal free and narrow spectrum with line width at 1.4-1.7 nm is obtained, which is advantageous for further power amplification and effective frequency doubling. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. The thermal properties of a micro-electromechanical system sensor were analysed by a novel digital moire method. A double-layer micro-cantilever sensor (60 mu m long, 10 mu m width and 2 mu dm thick) was prepared by focused ion beam milling. A grating with frequency of 5000 lines mm- I was etched on the cantilever. The sensor was placed into a scanning electron microscope system with a high temperature device. The observation and recording of the thermal deformation of the grating were realised in real-time as the temperature rose from room temperature to 300 degrees C at intervals of 50 degrees C. Digital moire was generated by interference of the deformed grating and a digital virtual grating. The thermal properties including strain distribution of the sensor and the linear expansion coefficient of polysilicon were accurately measured by the phase-shifted moire patterns.

In this paper a hydrodynamic approach is used to analyse carefully the flow field inChandler loop--the artificial thrombus formation. The results obtained show that near thelower meniscus where the thrombus is formed, there is a back flow accompanied with asecondary flow and its mainflow is toward the meniscus, thus providing a favourable condi-tion for corpuscle aggregation. Our finding is valuable for studying the mechanism ofthrombus formation in artificial organ and in vivo.
