The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of self-assembled In0.55Al0.45As/Al0.45Ga0.5As quantum dots (QD) grown on (311)A GaAs substrate were measured. The type- I character of PL related to the X valley was verified by excitation power dependence of peak position and the PL spectra under different pressure , which was attributed to the type- II transition from X valley in Al0.5Ga0.5As to heavy holes in In0.55Al0.45As The high energy Gamma -related transition was also observed above 70K and assigned as the transition between Gamma valley and heavy holes in In-0.55 Al0.45As. The X-valley split was discussed to interpret the observed second X-related peak under pressure.

We investigated the photoluminescence (PL) of self-assembled In0.55Al0.45As/Al0.5Ga0.5As quantum dots (QDs) grown on (311)A GaAs substrate. The PL peak at 10 K shifts to lower energy by about 30 meV when the excitation power decreases by two orders of magnitude. It has a red-shift under pressure, that is the character of X-like transition. Moreover, its peak energy is smaller than the indirect gap of bulk Al0.5Ga0.5As and In0.55Al0.45As. We then attribute that peak to the type-II transition between electrons in X valley of Al0.5Ga0.5As and heavy holes in In0.55Al0.45As QDs. A new peak appears at the higher energy when temperature is increased above 70 K. It shifts to higher energy with increasing pressure, corresponding to the transition from conduction Gamma band to valence band in QDs. The measurements demonstrate that our In0.55Al0.45As/Al0.5Ga0.5As quantum dots are type-II QDs with X-like conduction-band minimum. To interpret the second X-related peak emerged under pressure, we discuss the X-valley split in QDs briefly. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S0003-6951(00)04622-2].

Studies on the bounding character of rare earth ions with borine serum albumin(BSA) are significant for understanding the state of rare earth ions in body and their effects on the structure and function of protein. The fluorescence spectrum and pH potentiometry showed consistent results of apparent complexion constant of Tb-2 . BSA. The equilibrium dialysis showed that there are two specific binding sites and more than six non-specific binding sites of RE ions onto BSA molecule with the conditional stable constants lg K-1 = 5. 157 and lgK(2) = 3. 435. Na-23 NMR studies revealed that the BSA peptide chain bound to RE ions was expanded and the mobility of its molecular backbone was increased.

The Mossbauer spectrum of a new organoeuropium complex with a neutral pi-ligand, Eu(eta6-C6Me6) (AlCl4)2, is measured at 88 K. The Mossbauer parameters derived from the spectrum show the divalent nature of the europium ion in this organoeuropium complex. The calculations of the electric field gradient at the Eu nucleus in the crystal indicate that the Eu-Cl bond in the compound may possess a certain covalent character. The low Debye temperature of this complex may be attributed to weak and delocalized pi-bonding between the Eu atom and the benzene ring of hexamethylbenzene, and a slow paramagnetic relaxation is suggested by the Mossbauer effect.

The bioinorganic complexes of europium with N-acetyl-DL-alanine, N-acetyl-DL-valine, and DL-alanyl-DL-alanine have been synthesized and the Mossbauer spectra at room temperature have been measured for these solid state complexes. The Mossbauer parameters indicate that the water molecules in these complexes are not directly linked to the central europium ion and are outside the coordination sphere of europium and biological ligands, and that the chemical bond between the europium ion and the ligands may be predominantly ionic in character, with the possibility of partial covalent contribution.
