New compounds LaSr2-xCa-(x)V3O9+/-y (x = 0.0, 0.67, 1.0, 1.33 and 2.0) have been synthesized with a simple new method X ray powder diffraction results indicate that they are single compound. Their lattice constants are calculated. The structure of LaSr2-xCa(x)V39+/-y changed from cubic to orthorhombic and back to cubic with the increase of calcium content. The results of weight gain in TG and XPS curves show that vanadium with lower valent state is oxidized to higher valent state at higher temperature. The oxygen content of new compounds are calculated from the weight gain. It is shown that V3+ and V4+ may coexist in LaSr2-xCa(x)V3O9+/-y. These compounds show that low resistivity.

It has been reported recently that single carbon nanotubes were attached to AFM tips to act as nanotweezers. In order to investigate its stability, a vertical single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) under its own weight is studied in this paper. The lower end of the carbon nanotube is clamped. Firstly the governing dimensionless numbers are derived by dimensional analysis. Then the theoretical analysis based on an elastic column model is carried out. Two ratios, I.e., the ratio of half wall thickness to radius (t=R) and the ratio of gravity to elastic resilience ($\rho$gR=E), and their influences on the ratio of critical length to radius are discussed. It is found that the relationship between the critical ratio of altitude to radius and ratio of half thickness to radius is approximately linear. As the dimensionless number $\rho$gR=E increases, the compressive force per unit length (weight) becomes larger, thus critical ratio of altitude to radius must become smaller to maintain stability. At last the critical length of SWCNT is calculated. The results of this paper will be helpful for the stability design of nanotweezers-like nanostructures.

Concentration of trace elements measured by dry weight basis has become more commonly used in recent studies on cetaceans than wet weight basis, which was used more in earlier studies. Because few authors present moisture content data in their papers, it is difficult to compare the concentrations of trace elements between various studies. Therefore, we felt that it would be useful if a reference conversion factor (CF) for tissue types could be found to convert between wet weight and dry weight data on trace element concentrations. We determined the moisture contents of 14 tissues of Dall's porpoise (Phocoenoides dalli), and then, calculated the CF values for those tissues. Because the moisture content of each tissue differs from other tissues, it is necessary to use a specific CIF for each tissue rather than a general CF for several tissues. We have also found that CIF values for Dall's porpoise tissues are similar to the same tissues in other cetaceans. Therefore CF values from Dall's porpoise can be reliably used to convert between wet and dry weight concentrations for other cetacean tissues as reference data. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. The effects of nutrients on the photosynthetic recovery of Nostoc flagelliforme during re-hydration were investigated in order to see if their addition was necessary. Net photosynthesis was negligible in distilled water without nutrient-enrichment. Addition of K+ resulted in significant enhancement of net photosynthesis, whereas other nutrients (Fe3+, Mg2+, Na+, NO3-, PO43-, Cl-) and trace-metals (A(5)) showed little effect. The recovered net photosynthetic activity increased with the increased K+, and reached the maximum at concentrations above 230 mu M. Desiccation and re-hydration did not affect the dependence of photosynthetic recovery on K+. It was concluded that dried field populations of N. flagelliforme require exogenous addition of potassium for photosynthetic recovery and that growth may be potassium-limited in nature.

Nile tilapia weighing 8.29-11.02 g were fed a practical diet at seven ration levels (starvation, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4% body weight per day and satiation) twice a day at 30 degrees C. Feed consumption, apparent digestibility, nitrogenous excretion and growth were determined directly, and heat production was calculated by difference of energy budget. The relationship between specific growth rate in wet weight (SGR(w), percentage per day) and ration size (RL, percentage per day) was a decelerating curve described as SGR(w) = 2.98 (1 - e(-0.61(RL-0.43))). The apparent digestibility coefficients for dry matter and protein showed a decreasing pattern with increasing ration while the apparent digestibility coefficient of energy was not significantly affected by ration size. The proportion of gross energy intake lost in nitrogenous excretion tended to decrease with increasing ration. Feed efficiency was highest, and the proportion of gross energy intake channelled to heat production was lowest, at an intermediate ration level (2% per day). The energy budget at the satiation level was: 100IE = 16.9FE + 1.2(ZE + UE) + 62.3HE + 19.6RE, where IE, FE, (ZE + UE), HE and RE represent gross energy intake, faecal energy, excretory (non-faecal) energy loss, heat production and recovered energy (growth), respectively. The brain of the Kun-Ming strain mice were irradiated with 0.05 Gy of C-12(6+) ion or Co-60 gamma-ray as the pre-exposure dose, and were then irradiated with 2 Gy of 12C6+ ion or Co-60 gamma-ray as challenging irradiation dose at 4 h after per-exposure. Body weight and serum growth hormone (GH) concentration were measured at 35th day after irradiation. The results showed that irradiation of mouse brain with 2 Gy of C-12(6+) ion or Co-60 gamma-ray significantly diminished mouse body weight and level of serum GH. The relative biological effectiveness values of a 2 Gy dose of C-12(6+) ion calculated with respect to Co-60 gamma-ray were 1.47 and 1.34 for body weight and serum GH concentration, respectively. Pre-exposure with a low-dose (0.05 Gy) of C-12(6+) ion or Co-60 gamma-ray significantly alleviated reductions of mouse body weight and level of serum GH induced by a subsequent high-dose (2 Gy) irradiation. The data suggested that low-dose ionizing irradiation can induce adaptive hormetic responses to the harmful effects of pituitary by subsequent high-dose exposure.

Four novel diimine rhenium(I) carbonyl complexes with the formula [Re(CO)(3)(L) Br], where L = 2-(4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl) phenyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10] phenanthroline (P1), 2-(4-(3,6-di-tert-butyl-9H-carbazol-9-yl) phenyl)-1H-imidazo-[4,5-f][1,10] phenanthroline (P2), 2-(4-(6-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-9H-3,9'-bicarbazol-9-yl) phenyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10] phenanthroline (D1), and 2-(4-(3', 6'-di-tert-butyl-6-(3,6-di-tert-butyl-9H-carbazol-9-yl)-9H-3,9'-bicarbazol-9-yl) phenyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10] phenanthroline (D2), have been successfully synthesized and fully characterized by (HNMR)-H-1, IR, and UV-Vis, etc. The luminescence quantum yields (LQYs) of the parent Re(I) complexes P1 and P2 are 0.13 and 0.16, respectively, which are much higher than the previously reported Re(I) dendrimers. The HOMOs and the LUMOs of P1 and P2 are calculated to be mainly composed of [d(Re) + pi(CO + Br)] and pi*(L) orbital, respectively.

Two bromo rhenium(I) carbonyl complexes with the formula of [Re(CO)(3)(L)Br], where L = 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen-Re) and 5-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline (Pyph-Re), were successfully synthesized with the aim to analyze the effect of the pyrrole (Py) moiety on the photophysical properties of Pyph-Re. It was found that the triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer d pi (Re) --> pi*(N-N) emission of Phen-Re and Pyph-Re centered at ca. 527 nm with the luminescence quantum yield (LQY) of 0.015 and ca. 578 nm with the LQY of 0.011, respectively. At the same time, the geometrical structures of the ground state and the absorption spectral properties of Phen-Re and Pyph-Re were also calculated with the 6-31G* basis set employed on C, H, N, O, and Br atoms, and LANL2DZ adopted on Re atom.

RE3+-activated alpha- and beta-CaAl2B2O7 (RE = Tb, Ce) were synthesized with the method of high-temperature solid-state reaction. Their VUV excitation and VUV-excited emission spectra are measured and discussed in the present article. The charge transfer band of Tb3+ and Ce3+ is respectively calculated to be at 151 +/- 2 and 159 +/- 3 nm. All the samples show an activator-independent excitation peak at about 175 nm and an emission peak at 350-360 nm ascribed to the host absorption and emission band, respectively.

Calcium lanthanide oxyborate doped with rare-earth ions LnCa(4)O(BO3)(3):RE3+ (LnCOB:RE, Ln = Y, La, Gd, RE = Eu, Tb, Dy, Cc) was synthesized by the method of solid-state reaction at high temperature. Their fluorescent spectra were measured from vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) to visible region at room temperature. Their excitation spectra all have a broadband center at about 188 nm, which is ascribed to host absorption. Using Dorenbos' and J phi rgensen's work [P. Dorenbos, J. Lumin. 91 (2000) 91, R. Resfeld, C.K. J phi rgensen. Lasers and Excite States of Rare Earth [M], Springer, Berlin, 1977, p. 45], the position of the lowest 5d levels E(Ln,A) and charge transfer band E-ct were calculated and compared with their excitation spectra.Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions doped into LnCOB show efficient luminescence under VUV and UV irradiation. In this system, Ce3+ ions do not show efficient luminescence and quench the luminescence of Tb3+ ions when Tb3+ and Ce3+ ions are co-doped into LnCOB. GdCOB doped with Dy3+ shows yellowish white light under irradiation of 254 nm light for the reason that Gd ions transfer the energy from itself to Dy.

On the basis of the thermodynamics of Gibbs, the spinodal for the quasibinary system was derived in the framework of the Sanchez-Lacombe lattice fluid theory. All of the spinodals were calculated based on a model polydisperse polymer mixture, where each polymer contains three different molecular weight subcomponents. According to our calculations, the spinodal depends on both weight-average ((M) over bar (w)) and number-average ((M) over bar (n)) molecular weights, whereas that of the z-average molecular weight is invisible. Moreover, the extreme of the spinodal decreases when the polydispersity index (eta = (M) over bar (w)/(M) over bar (n)) of the polymer increases. The effect of polydispersity on the spinodal decreases when the molecular weight gets larger and can be negligible at a certain large molecular weight. It is well-known that the influence of polydispersity on the phase equilibrium (coexisting curve, cloud point curves) is much more pronounced than on the spinodal. The effect of M, on the spinodal is discussed as it results from the infuluence of composition temperatures, molecular weight, and the latter's distribution on free volume. An approximate expression, which is in the assumptions of v* v(1)* = v(2)* and 1/r --> 0 for both of the polymers, was also derived for simplification. It can be used in high molecular weight, although it failed to make visible the effect of number-average molecular weight on the spinodal.

By using the chemical bond theory of complex crystals, the chemical bond properties of REBa2Cu3O7 (RE = Eu, Y) were calculated. The calculated covalencies for Cu(1)-O and Cu(2)-O bond in REBa2Cu3O7 compounds are 0.41 and 0.28 respectively. Mossbauer isomer shifts of Fe-57 doped, and Sn-119 doped in REBa2Cu3O7-x were calculated by using the chemical environmental factor, h(e), defined by covalency and electronic polarizability. Four valence state tin ion and iron ion sites were identified in Fe-57 and Sn-119 doped REBa2Cu3O7-x superconductors.

With the aid of Sanchez-Lacombe lattice fluid theory (SLLFT), the phase diagrams were calculated for the system cyclohexane (CH)/polystyrene (PS) with different molecular weights at different pressures. The experimental data is in reasonable agreement with SLLFT calculations. The total Gibbs interaction energy, g*(12) for different molecular weights PS at different pressures was expressed, by means of a universal relationship, as g(12)* =f(12)* + (P - P-0) nu*(12) demixing curves were then calculated at fixed (near critical) compositions of CH and PS systems for different molecular weights. The pressures of optimum miscibility obtained from the Gibbs interaction energy are close to those measured by Wolf and coworkers. Furthermore, a reasonable explanation was given for the earlier observation of Saeki et al., i.e., the phase separation temperatures of the present system increase with the increase of pressure for the low molecular weight of the polymer whereas they decrease for the higher molecular weight polymers. The effects of molecular weight, pressure, temperature and composition on the Flory Huggins interaction parameter can be described by a general equation resulting from fitting the interaction parameters by means of Sanchez-Lacombe lattice fluid theory.

From the chemical bond viewpoint, the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) tensor coefficients of some Re-2(MoO4)(3) (ReMO)-type tare earth molybdates, with Re = Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb and Dy, have been calculated by using the chemical bond theory of complex crystals and the modified bond charge model. All kinds of constituent chemical bonds are considered in the calculation. The major part of the NLO properties of these ReMO crystals is found from the ReO7 groups. The NLO coefficients of these ReMO crystals decrease with Re from Pr to Dy. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two unfractionated samples of phenolphthalein poly( aryl ether sulfone) (PES-C) were characterized in CHCl3 at 25 degrees C by applying a recently developed laser light-scattering (LLS) procedure. The Laplace inversion of precisely measured intensity-intensity time correlation function lead us first to an estimate of the characteristic line-width distribution G(Gamma) and then to the translational diffusion coefficient distribution G(D). A combination of static and dynamic LLS results enabled us to determine D = (2.69 x 10(-4))M(-0.553), which agrees with the calibration of D = (2.45 x 10(-4))M(-0.55) previously established by a set of narrowly distributed PES-C samples. Using this newly obtained scaling between D and M, we were able to convert G(D) into a differential weight distribution f(w)(M) for the two PES-C samples. The weight-average molecular weights calculated from f(w)(M) are comparable to that obtained directly from static LLS. Our results showed that using two broadly distributed samples instead of a set of narrowly distributed samples have provided not only similar final results, but also a more practical method for the PES-C characterization.
