This paper describes the high-frequency echolocation signals from free-ranging Yangtze finless porpoise in the Tian-e-zhou Baiji National Natural Reserve in Hubei Province, China. Signal analysis showed that the Yangtze finless porpoise clicks are typical high-frequency narrow-band (relative width of the frequency spectrum Q=6.6 &PLUSMN; 1.56, N=548) ultrasonic pulses. The peak frequencies of the typical clicks range from 87 to 145 kHz with an average of 125 &PLUSMN; 6.92 kHz. The durations range from 30 to 122 μ s with an average of 68 &PLUSMN; 14.12 μ s. The characteristics of the signals are similar to those of other members of the Phocoenidae as well as the distantly related delphinids, Cephalorhynchus spp. Comparison of these signals to those of the baiji (Lipotes vexillifer), who occupies habitat similar to that of the Yangtze finless porpoise, showed that the peak frequencies of clicks produced by the Yangtze finless porpoise are remarkably higher than those produced by the baiji. Difference in peak frequency between the two species is probably linked to the different size of prefer-red prey fish. Clear double-pulse and multi-pulse reverberation structures of clicks are noticed, and there is no indication of any low-frequency (< 70 kHz) components during the recording period. © 2005 Acoustical Society of America.

This paper reports on a successful application of the concept of nanoreactors to effectively controlling the selectivity of the free radical grafting of maleic anhydride (MAH) onto polypropylene (PP) in the melt, an industrially relevant process. More specifically, a free radical initiator of type ROOR was first confined into (or encapsulated by) the galleries of an organically modified montmorillonite (o-MMT) whose interdistance was 2.4 nm. Primary free radicals (RO center dot) formed inside the o-MMT galleries had to diffuse out before they could react with the PP backbone. The controlled release of the primary free radicals significantly increased the grafting degree of MAH onto PP and greatly reduced the level of the chain scission of the latter. Those results were better understood by electron spin resonance studies on model systems and by Monte Carlo simulations.

The effects of the free-stream thermo-chemical state on the test model flow field in the high-enthalpy tunnel are studied numerically. The properties of the free-stream, which is in thermo-chemical non-equilibrium, are determined by calculating the nozzle flow field. A free-stream with total enthalpy equal to the real one in the tunnel while in thermo-chemical equilibrium is constructed artificially to simulate the natural atmosphere condition. The flow fields over the test models (blunt cone and Apollo command capsule model) under both the non-equilibrium and the virtual equilibrium free-stream conditions are calculated. By comparing the properties including pressure, temperature, species concentration and radiation distributions of these two types of flow fields, the effects of the non-equilibrium state of the free-stream in the high-enthalpy shock tunnel are analyzed.

Based on the isospin- and momentum-dependent transport model IBUU04, the transverse momentum distributions of the free neutron-proton ratio in the Sn-132+(124) Sn reaction system at mid-central collisions with beam energies of 400/A MeV, 600/A MeV and 800/A MeV are studied by using two different symmetry energies. It is found that the free neutron-proton ratio as a function of the transverse momentum at the mid-rapidity is very sensitive to the density dependency of the symmetry energy especially at incident energies around 400/AMeV.

The interface of a laser-discrete-quenched steel substrate and as-deposited chromium electroplate was investigated by ion beam etching, dissolving-substrate-away and using a Vickers microhardness tester, in an attempt to reveal the mechanism that the service life of the chromium-coated parts is increased by the duplex technique of laser pre-quenching plus chromium post-depositing. The laser quenching of the steel substrate can reduce the steep hardness gradient at the substrate/chromium interface and improve the load-bearing capacity of chromium electroplate. Moreover, the laser quenching prior to plating has an extremely great effect on the morphologies and microstructure of the substrate/chromium interface: there is a transient interlayer at the original substrate/chromium interface while there is not at the laser-quenchedzone/chromium interface; the near-substrate surface microstructure and morphologies of the free-standing chromium electrodeposits, whose substrate was dissolved away with nital 30% in volume, inherit the periodically gradient characteristics of the laser-discrete-quenched substrate surface. The pressure behavior of the ultraviolet (UV) and green emission bands in ZnO tetrapod-like micro-rods has been investigated at 300 and 70 K, respectively. The pressure coefficient of the UV band at 300 K is 24.5 meV/GPa, consistent with that of the band gap of bulk ZnO. However, the pressure coefficient of the green band is 25 meV/GPa, far larger than previous literature reports. The green band in this work originates from Cu-related emission, as confirmed by the fine structure observed in the spectra at 10 K. The pressure coefficients of four phonon replicas of the free exciton emission (FX) at 70 K are 21.0, 20.2, 19.8, and 19.3 meV/GPa, respectively. The energy shift rate of the FX emission and the LO phonon energies is then determined to be 21.4 and 0.55 meV/GPa. The pressure coefficient of the neutral donor bound exciton ((DX)-X-0) transition is 20.5 meV/GPa, only 4% smaller than that of FX. This confirms that the (DX)-X-0 emission corresponds to excitons bound to neutral shallow donors. (C) 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

With the variational cumulant expansion (VCE) method, the thermodynamic behaviors of S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg films in simple cubic lattices are studied analytically. From the analytic properties of the free energy, in principle we are able to calculate analytically the critical temperatures T-c(L) and the thermodynamic functions, to any order cumulant as the functions of the number of L (the hyperlayers in the hyperfilm). Explicit expressions for T-c(L) up to the fourth order are given. A comparison with the existing results for 3-dimensional system is given. The effective range of the interaction is obtained from numerical results.

We report on high magnetic fields (up to 40 T) cyclotron resonance, quantum Hall effect and Shubnikov-de-Hass measurements in high frequency transistors based on Si-doped GaN-AlGaN heterojunctions. A simple way of precise modelling of the cyclotron absorption in these heterojunctions is presented, We clearly establish two-dimensional electrons to be the dominant conducting carriers and determine precisely their in-plane effective mass to be 0.230 +/- 0.005 of the free electron effective mass. The increase of the effective mass with an increase of two-dimensional carrier density is observed and explained by the nonparabolicity effect. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.

X-Ray photoelectron spectra of some bioinorganic complexes of La, Ce, PT, Nd, Sm and Eu with N-acetylalanine have been measured and the 3d5/2 and 3d3/2 main peaks and their satellites have also been assigned. ne spin-orbit splitting between the 3d5/2 and 3d3/2 core-level of the rare earth ion in these complexes becomes slightly larger than that of the free rare earth atom due to the effect of the crystal field. The satellite for the 3d main peaks of La in the solid state complex are in higher binding energy region and may be attributable to the L --> 4f charge-transfer shake-up process. The satellites for the 3d main peaks of Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and Eu are in the lower binding energy region and may be attributable to the 4f --> L charge-transfer shake-down process.

It was assumed [1, 2] that gravity affects the coagulation process in two ways: free convection, which is hard to be avoided on the ground and sedimentation, which can be greatly reduced by the density-matching method. We present a ground-based experiment set-up to study the influence of convection on the perikinetic coagulation for aqueous polystyrene (PS) dispersions. The turbidity measurement was used to evaluate the relative coagulation rate and convection-driven flows in the solution were checked with a visual-magnification system. The pattern of flow field temperature profile in the sample cell is given. Our experiments show that there was no noticeable difference of coagulation rate observed no matter whether convection flows exist (with the flow speed up to 180 mu m/s) or not.

By photoluminescence measurements we find that at low temperature the linewidth of the excitonic luminescence broadens with increasing electron density in the wider well from a photoexcited type-I-type-II mixed GaAs/AlAs asymmetric double quantum well structure, which even makes the excitonic linewidth at 77 K larger than at 300 K above a certain excitation intensity. We verify that the broadening is due to the scattering of two-dimensional carriers to excitonic states. Based on the theory of the scattering of carriers to excitonic states, we calculate the broadening of the excitonic linewidth. Our experimental results are convincing for verifying the theoretical prediction. (C) 1995 American Institute of Physics.
