Blends consisting of high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) as the matrix and polyamide 1010 (PA1010) as the dispersed phase were prepared by mixing. The grafting copolymers of HIPS and maleic anhydride (MA), the compatibilizer precursors of the blends, were synthesized. The contents of the IMA in the grafting copolymers are 4.7 wt % and 1.6 wt %, and were assigned as HAM and LMA, respectively. Different blend morphologies were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM); the domain size of the PA1010 dispersed phase in the HIPS matrix of compatibilized blends decreased comparing with that of uncompatibilized blends. For the blend with 25 wt % HIPS-g-MA component, the T-c of PA1010 shifts towards lower temperature, from 178 to 83 degrees C. It is found that HIPS-g-MA used as the third component has profound effect on the mechanical properties of the resulting blends. This behavior has been attributed to the chemical reaction taking place in situ during the mixing between the two components of PA1010 and HIPS-g-MA. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Electrochemical polymerized polyaniline(PAn) film electrode was used to investigate the electrocatalytic effect of PAn on the electrochemical redox reaction of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMcT), PAn film electrode was electrochemically treated or immersed in DMcT solution before it was scanned in 1.0 mol/L HCl electrolyte. The cyclic voltammograms of PAn film electrode in 1.0 mol/L HCl solution changed with the above treatment, implying the electrocatalytic effect of PAn on the redox reaction of DMcT, The formation of electron-donor-acceptor adducts through the interaction between thiol or disulfide groups of DMcT and amine or imine groups of PAn during the treatment was probably the reason of the catalysis, The electrochemical properties of the adduct were different from those of PAn and DMcT, The adduct possessed a higher electrochemical activity and a better electrochemical reversibility than DMcT or PAn used alone.

As a kind of supported bilayer lipid membranes, hybrid bilayer membrane (HBM) was applied to the interaction between Ca2+ and lipid for the first time. By using Fe(CN)(6)(3-) as a probe, we found that Ca2+ could induce the ion channel of HBM to be in open state. STM images study proved this phenomenon.

The effect of potassium thiocyanate on the partitioning of lysozyme and BSA in polyethylene glycol 2000/ammonium sulfate aqueous two-phase system has been investigated. As a result of the addition of potassium thiocyanate to the PEG/ammonium sulfate system, the PEG/mixed salts aqueous two-phase system was formed. It was found that the potassium thiocyanate could alter the pH difference between the two phases, and, thus, influence the partition coefficients of the differently charged proteins. The relationship between partition coefficient of the proteins and pH difference between two phases has been discussed. It was proposed that the pH difference between two phases could be employed as the measurement of electrostatic driving force for the partitioning of charged proteins in polyethylene glycol 2000/ammonium sulfate aqueous two-phase system.

From the chemical bond viewpoint, second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) tensor coefficients of LiNbO3 have been investigated. The single-bond contributions to the second-order NLO susceptibility and the linear susceptibility were determined. The tensor values thus calculated are in good agreement with experimental data. Based on theoretical results of LiNbO3 with Li/Nb = 1, we also have calculated linear and nonlinear optical properties of nonstoichiometric samples with Li/Nb < 1. In the calculation, we find that the Li-O bond is an important type of chemical bond in these LiNbO3 samples, which have large NLO contributions to the total nonlinearities. The refractive indices and second-order NLO tensor coefficients have been determined as a function of the stoichiometry.

The mechanical properties of wollastonite-filled phenolphthalein poly(ether ketone) (PEK-C) composites have been studied at room temperature and 200 degrees C. The dispersion of wollastonite particles in PEK-C matrix were investigated by means of scanning electron microscope. The modulus and strength of the composites increased with filler content. The reinforced effect of wollastonite on PEK-C is more marked at elevated temperature. The glass transition temperature of the composites is higher than that of PEK-C and is independent of filler content. The restriction effect of tiller particles on the molecular mobility of the polymer matrix should be attributed to the reinforcement. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The changes of the synchronous fluorescence spectra and the electrochemical behaviour of cytochrome c with the urea concentration are studied. It has been found that with the increase of urea concentration, there occur sequentially the deaggregation of cytochrome c molecules, the increase of exposure extent of the heme group to the solvent, the disruption of Fe-S bond of the heme group and the change in the electrochemical behaviour of cytochrome c. It is suggested that the reason why the electrochemical reaction of cytochrome c is irreversible is that cytochrome c molecules exist in the concentrated solution as oligomers which are electrochemically inactive.

For recycling of waste polymers, the degradation behavior of PP was studied with a combination of radiolysis and thermolysis methods. The results revealed that thermal degradation temperature of PP was significantly reduced when PP was irradiated in the presence of a zeolite. The irradiation-induced temperature reduction depended on the zeolite structure and composition, as well as on the morphology of the mixture. Identification of pyrolysis products indicated that, in the absence of zeolite, irradiation resulted only in a change of the product distribution but no formation of new compounds. In the presence of zeolite, however, a series of oxidized products were formed. In addition, the pyrolysis could be performed at a much lower temperature. (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Limited

A systematic study has been made for the electrochemical oxidation reaction of biliverdin (BV) in pure dimethylformamide (DMF) and in DMF - H2O mixed solvent by in situ time resolved spectroelectrochemical and cyclic voltametric techniques. The experiments show that not only the oxidation of BV is promoted, the reaction mechanism is also changed from a ECEC to a ECCECC process by the introduction of water into DMF.

Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has been irradiated (0-40 Mrad) with a Co-60 source at room temperature under vacuum. The crystallinity has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The mechanical properties have been determined at room temperature. A significant increase of heat of fusion can be seen at low irradiation doses, which is attributed to crystallization, caused by chain scission during the process of irradiation. It is also observed that the thickness of the lamellae changes with irradiation dose. The Young's modulus has been improved significantly after irradiation at low doses. The adsorption of bis(4-pyridyl)disulphide (PySSPy) and 4.4'-bipyridyl (PyPy) on a gold electrode was studied using cyclic voltammetry. The adsorption isotherms and equilibrium constants (1 X 10(6) mol-1 l for PyPy and 6 x 10(6) Mol-1 l for PySSPy) were determined. The effect of pH on the electrochemical behaviour of cytochrome c was studied on the PySSPy-modified gold electrode. The results show that cytochrome c can only transfer electrons on a deprotonated electrode surface. When the pH is decreased, the standard heterogeneous rate constant of cytochrome c on the modified gold electrode decreases and the electrochemical behaviour changes from a quasi-reversible to an irreversible process.
