Electrooxidation of thionine on screen-printed carbon electrode gives rise to the modification of the surface with amino groups for the covalent immobilization of enzymes such as horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The biosensor was constructed using multilayer enzymes which covalently immobilized onto the surface of amino groups modified screen-printed carbon electrode using glutaraldehyde as a bifunctional reagent. The multilayer assemble of HRP has been characterized with the cyclic voltammetry and the faradaic impedance spectroscopy. The H2O2 biosensor exhibited a fast response (2 s) and low detection limit (0.5 muM).

The interaction of chlorpromazine (CPZ) with supported bilaver lipid (dipalmitoyphosphatidylcholine) membrane (s-BLM) on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was investigated using cyclic voltammetry and ac impedance spectroscopy. The experimental data, based on the voltammetric response of Ru(NH3)(6)(3+) associated with the oxidation of CPZ on the electrode, indicated that the interaction of CPZ with s-BLM was concentration and time dependant. The interaction between them could be divided into three stages by the concentration of CPZ: low, middle and high concentration. At the first stage, s-BLM was not affected by CPZ and the interaction was only a penetration of a small quantity of CPZ molecule into s-BLM. At the second stage, the defects formed in s-BLM due to the penetration of more CPZ molecule into s-BLM. At the last stage, a high CPZ:lipid ratio reached in s-BLM, resulting in the solubilization of s-BLM. The interaction time had different effect at three stages.

Nisin is a positively charged antibacterial peptide that binds to the negatively charged membranes of gram-positive bacteria. The initial interaction of the peptide with the model membrane of negatively charged DPPG (dipalmitoylphosphatidylglycerol) was studied by cyclic voltammetry and a.c. impedance spectroscopy. Nisin could induce pores the supported bilayer lipid membrane, thus, it led to the marker ions Fe(CN)(6)(3-/4-) crossing the lipid membrane and giving the redox reaction on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Experimental results suggested that the pore formation on supported bilayer lipid membrane was dependent on the concentration of nisin and it included three main concentration stages: low, middling, high concentration.

The influence of K7Fe3+P2W17O62H2 on l-alpha-phosphatidylcholine/cholesterol bilayer lipid membrane on Pt electrode was studied by voltammetry and AC impedance spectroscopy. The interaction of the polyoxometalates with the BLM can promote the access of Ru(NH3)(6)(3+) and [Fe(CN)(6)](3-/4-) to the electrode surface. It was found that some kind of pores had been formed on the BLM by AFM. The phenomenon is attributed to the interaction of K7Fe3+P2W17O62H2 with phosphatidylcholine phosphate groups located in its outer leaflet. Experimental results are helpful to understand the biological activity of the polyoxometalates in vivo.

Bilayer lipid membranes ( BLM) formed from didode-cyldimethylammonium bromide were made on the freshly exposed surface of a glassy carbon (GC) and were demonstrated by the ac impedance spectroscopy. The ion channels of membrane properties induced by PF6- were studied by the cyclic voltammetric methods. Experimental results indicated that the ion channel of BLM was open in the presence of the PF6- due to the interaction of PF6- with the BLM, while it was switched off in the absence of PF6-. Because the ion channel behavior was affected by the concentration of PF6-, a sensor for PF6- can be developed.

Adsorption of a monolayer of didecanoyl-L-alpha-phosphatidylcholine (DDPC) from dispersions of small unilamellar vesicles onto hydrophobic surfaces was investigated by mean of cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy. The hydrophobic surfaces were self-assembled monolayers of 2-mereapto-3-n-octylthiophene (MOT) on gold. One characteristic of the MOT monolayer is its permeability to organic molecules in aqueous solution, thus providing a more energetically favorable hydrophobic surface for the addition of phospholipid vesicles. The kinetics of the lipid monolayer formation were followed by measuring the time-dependent interfacial capacitance. Unusual values of thickness and capacitance of the MOT/ DDPC bilayers were observed. An interdigitating conformation of the bilayer structure was proposed to interpret the experimental results, The horseradish peroxidase reconstituted into the bilayer demonstrated the expected protein activity, showing practical use in research and in biosensor application.

A new kind of solid substrate, a glassy carbon (GC) electrode, was selected to support lipid layer membranes. On the surface of the GC electrode, we made layers of didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (a synthetic lipid). From electrochemical impedance experiments, we demonstrated that the lipid layers on the GC electrode were bilayer lipid membranes. We studied the ion channel behavior of the supported bilayer lipid membrane. In the presence of perchlorate anions as the stimulus and ruthenium(II) complex cations as the marker ions, the lipid membrane channel was open and exhibited distinct channel current. The channel was in a closed state in the absence of perchlorate anions.

A kind of solid substrate, glassy carbon (GC) electrode. was selected to support self-assembled lipid layer membranes. On the surface of GC electrode. we made layers of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPG, a kind of lipid). From electrochemical impedance experiments. we demonstrated that the lipid layers on the GC electrode were bilayer lipid membranes. We immobilized horseradish peroxidase (HRP) into the supported bilayer lipid membranes (s-BLM) to develop a kind of mediator-free biosensor for H2O2. The biosensor exhibited fine electrochemical response, stability and reproducibility due to the presence of the s-BLM. As a model of biological membrane, s-BLM could supply a biological environment for enzyme and maintain its activity. So s-BLM is an ideal choice to immobilize enzyme for constructing the mediator-free biosensor based on GC electrode. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Gel electrolytes were prepared by thermal polymerization of diethylene glycol dimethacrylate (DIEGD) or its copolymer with methoxy polyethylene glycol monomethacrylate, molecular weight 400 (PEM(400)), at a molar ratio of 3/1 in the presence of propylene carbonate (PC) and LiClO4. Conductivity was measured by impedance spectroscopy. It was found that the conductivity data follow the Arrhenius equation in the homopolymer gel system, while the VTF equation holds true in the copolymer gel system. An increase in conductivity was observed in the copolymer gel system. However, whether in the homopolymer or in the copolymer gel system, a maximum ambient temperature conductivity was found at a salt concentration near 1.50 mol/l. Further, the activation energy values calculated from Arrhenius plots for the homopolymer gel system tended to reach a minimum value with increasing salt concentration. (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd

Gel electrolytes have been prepared by thermal polymerization of poly(polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (P(PEGD)) in the presence of propylene carbonate (PC) and alkali metal salts, such as LiClO4, LICF(3)SO(3) and LiBF4. The conductivity was studied by means of impedance spectroscopy, and it is found that the temperature dependence of conductivities follow a Arrhenius relationship when the molar percentage of PC is higher than 75% or LiClO4 concentration is lower than 0.9 mol/l. However, when LiCF3SO3 or LiBF4 is used instead of LiClO4 as the salt, the situation is different. For LICF(3)SO(3), the Arrhenius relationship almost holds true for all the salt concentrations studied; while for LiBF4, the Arrhenius equation hardly fits for any salt concentration. The dependence of activation energy on salt concentration is also examined, both for LiClO4 and LiCF3SO3, the values of E(a) tend to reach a minimum value with increasing salt concentration. X-ray and electrochemical studies of spinel-related manganese chromium oxides, LiCrxMn2-xO4 (0 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 1) were carried out in a lithium nonaqueous cell. X-ray diffraction spectra indicated that the substitution of manganese in LiMn2O4 by trivalent transition metals (Cr3+) cause the linear decrease of lattice parameter with the x in the LiCrMn2-xO4. Some discharge-capacity loss was obtained due to the lattice contraction of LiCrMn2-xO4, but it has a better rechargeability than LiMn2O4. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance experiments have shown that the excellent rechargeability of LiCrxMn2-xO4 may be attributed to the good reversibility of the change in its crystal structure for the insertion and extraction of lithium ions.
Improvement of direct methanol fuel cell performance by modifying catalyst coated membrane structure
Resumo:
A five-layer catalyst coated membrane (CCM) based upon Nation 115 membrane for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) was designed and fabricated by introducing a modified Nafion layer between the membrane and the catalyst layer. The properties of the CCM were determined by SEM, cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy, ruinous test and I-V curves. The characterizations show that the modified Nation layers provide increased interface contact area and enhanced interaction between the membrane and the catalyst layer. As a result, higher Pt utilization, lower contact resistance and superior durability of membrane electrode assembly was achieved. A 75% Pt utilization efficiency was obtained by using the novel CCM structure, whereas the conventional structure gave 60% efficiency. All these features greatly contribute to the increase in DMFC performance. The DMFC with new CCM structure presented a maximum power density of 260 MW cm(-2), but the DMFC with conventional structure gave only 200 mW cm(-2) under the same operation condition. Organised multilayers were formed from the controlled self-assembly of ferrocene alkyl thiols on Au(111) surfaces. The control was accomplished by increasing the concentration of the thiol solutions used for the assembly. Cyclic voltammetry, ellipsometry, scanning probe microscopy (STM and AFM) and in situ FTIR spectroscopy were used to probe the differences between mono- and multilayers of the same compounds. Electrochemical desorption studies confirmed that the multilayer structure is attached to the surface via one monolayer. The electrochemical behaviour of the multilayers indicated the presence of more than one controlling factor during the oxidation step, whereas the reduction was kinetically controlled which contrasts with the behaviour of monolayers, which exhibit kinetic control for the oxidation and reduction steps. Conventional and imaging ellipsometry confirmed that multilayers with well-defined increments in thickness could be produced. However, STM indicated that at the monolayer stage, the thiols used promote the mobility of Au atoms on the surface. It is very likely that the multilayer structure is held together through hydrogen bonding. To the best of out knowledge, this is the first example of a controlled one-step growth of multilayers of ferrocenyl alkyl thiols using self-assembly techniques.
