Efficient reductive selenation of aromatic aldehydes to symmetrical diselenides with Se/CO/H2O under atmospheric pressure

An efficient method for the synthesis of symmetrical diselenides is described. Reductive selenation of aromatic and heterocyclic aromatic aldehydes (ArCHO) with Se/CO/H2O in DMF afforded diselenides (ArCH2SeSeCH2Ar) in yields up to 94% under atmospheric pressure without use of a base.

Highly efficient separation of dsDNA fragments on glass chips by using an ultralow viscosity sieving matrix

A novel protocol has been established to separate dsDNA fragments with high efficiency on glass chips by using an ultralow viscosity sieving matrix with added glucose. Low-molecular-weight hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC), with a viscosity nearly equivalent to that of water, was used to electrophoretically separate fluorescent inter-calator-labeled double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) fragments on microfluidic glass chips. In comparison with conventional sieving protocols, low-molecular-weight HPMC as sieving matrix could result in reduced running cost and analysis time, in addition to a comparable separation efficiency of dsDNA fragments. In this paper, the addition of glucose was investigated to enhance the separation of DNA in the lowest viscosity polymer evaluated. The effect of staining dye and field strength were also evaluated. At an applied electric field strength of 200 V/cm, satisfactory resolution of the PBR322/HaeIII DNA marker could be achieved within 4 min by using 2% HPMC-5 with 6% glucose added. Coelectrophoresing PCR product along with phiX174/HaeIII DNA sizing marker was also demonstrated by using the ultralow viscosity HPMC-5 solution on a glass chip.

Highly efficient and enantioselective cyclopropanation of styrene with diazoacetates using a new copper-(Schiff-base) catalyst

A new copper-(Schiff-base) complex, derived from (S)-2-amino-1,1-di(3,5-di-t-butylphenyl)propanol, 2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzaldehyde and copper acetate monohydrate, was used as an efficient catalyst for the cyclopropanation of styrene with diazoacetates, affording ees of up to 98%. Environmental Kuznets Curve for SO_2 Emissions in China

This study examines the link between the economic growth and the environmental quality. Based on a panel data set, a N-shaped Environmental Kuzents Curve has been found for the sample period: a cubic relationship between per capita GDP and emissions of sulphur dioxide (SO2). We also find that energy consumption is an important determinant of environmental degradation. The empirical results suggest that we should promote environmental protection as soon as possible.

Efficient HOG human detection

While Histograms of Oriented Gradients (HOG) plus Support Vector Machine (SVM) (HOG+SVM) is the most successful human detection algorithm, it is time-consuming. This paper proposes two ways to deal with this problem. One way is to reuse the features in blocks to construct the HOG features for intersecting detection windows. Another way is to utilize sub-cell based interpolation to efficiently compute the HOG features for each block. The combination of the two ways results in significant increase in detecting humans-more than five times better. To evaluate the proposed method, we have established a top-view human database. Experimental results on the top-view database and the well-known INRIA data set have demonstrated the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Efficient One-Pot Synthesis of Highly Substituted Thiophene Library from 1,3-Dicarbonyl Compounds

A faccile and efficient one-pot synthesis of highly substituted thiophenes has been developed and employed for the preparation of a small focused library. Treatment of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds 1 with CS2 in the presence of K2CO3 in DMF at room temperature, followed by stepwise addition of alkyl bromides 2 and methylene active bromides 3, provided via intramolecular cyclization 2,3,4,5-tetrasubstituted thiophenes 4 in yields of 77-94%. This protocol, combining construction and modification of the thiophene ring, increases the structural diversity of final products from readily available materials. A mechanism for the one-pot synthesis of thiophenes of type 4 has been proposed.
