After meso-tetra (alpha, alpha, alpha, alpha-O-phenylacetyl benzene)porphyrin combined with McAb 1F2, there was a significant hyperchromic effect, indicating that the combination of porphyrin and antibody is rigid and compact, aromatic amino acids exist at the combining sites of antigen in antibody. These aromatic amino acids are Trys and Trps, but the numbers of Trp are more than that found for Trys. The stochiometric ratio of porphyrin to 1F2 is 1:1, the disassociation constant was determined as(2.084+/-0.216) x 10(-10) mol/L by a method of fluorescence quenching, showing that both have a high affinity.

The phase transition behavior of a thermotropic liquid crystalline poly(aryl ether ketone) synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4'-biphenol (BP), and chlorohydroquinone (CH) with 1,4-bis(4-fluorobenzoyl)benzene (BF) has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The copolymer exhibits multiple first order phase transitions, which are associated with crystal-to-smectic liquid crystal transition and smectic liquid crystal-to-isotropic transition. When the cooling rate is low (<10C/min), only stable crystal from I is formed. With the cooling rate being high (>20 degreesC/min), the metastable crystal form II is formed, which always coexists with form I. The liquid crystalline phase plays an important role in the formation of metastable phase form II.

The singlet-triplet splitting energy gap DeltaE(S.T) = E-S - E-T is calculated for the ortho-, meta-, and para-xylylenes and their heteroatomic analogous by means of AM1-CI approach. It is shown that when the radical centers R-.(R-.=H2C.-,H2N.+- or HN.-) are twisted sufficiently Tar out of conjugation with the benzene ring, DeltaE(S.T) tends to zero or is negative, i.e, ortho-, meta-, and para-phenylenes turn into weak ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic coupling unit, while they are strong ferromagnetic (meta-isomers) or antiferromagnetic (ortho-, para-isomers) coupling units under planar conformation. It is suggested that serious twisted conformation is not recommended candidate for the design of novel high-spin molecules with stable high-spin ground states by ortho- or para-phenylene coupling unit.

Two new compounds, [CoL2(H2O)(2)](NO3)(2). 8H(2)O (1) and [CoL(H2O)(2)(CH3CO2)(2)]. H2O (2), were obtained from self-assembly of the corresponding metal salts with 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(benzimidazole) (L). In 1, each cobalt ion is coordinated to four nitrogen atoms from four molecules of L, and to two water molecules. Metal ions are bridged by L ligands to form infinite (4, 4) networks that contain 44-membered rings. The (4, 4) networks of 1 stack in a parallel fashion, resulting in the formation of large channels in the material. In 2, each cobalt ion is coordinated to two N atoms from two L molecules, two water molecules and two carboxylate O atoms from two acetate anions. Each L molecule is coordinated to two cobalt ions, acting as a bridging ligand as in 1. The bridged cobalt ions form an infinite zigzag chain structure.

The cyclization of cis-1,4 polybutadiene in various solvents (mesitylene,xylene, toluene,benzene and cyclohexane) with the catalyst composed of CH2=CHCH2Cl-AlEt2Cl was studied. The infrared spectra of the cyclized products were investigated. It was shown that the products produced in cyclohexane and mesitylene have infrared spectra identical with those of the original cis-1,4-polybutadiene and the products obtained in other aromatics have infrared spectra different from each other and distinguishing with those of the parent cis-1,4 polybutadiene. The analyses of infrared spectra came to the conclusion that the molecules of aromatic solvent participate in cyclization of cis-1,4 polybutadiene at the given condition. A possible reaction scheme involving an electrophilic substitution of carbonium ions for Ar-H of aromatic solvents was proposed. Some experimental facts were explained with great satisfaction on the basis of the above mechanism.

Three new compounds, [ZnL1.5(H2O)(SO4)]. 6H(2)O 1, [ZnL1.5(H2O)(2)][NO3](2). 2H(2)O 2 and [CdL1.5(H2O)(2)(SO4)]. 4H(2)O 3 were obtained from self-assembly of the corresponding metal salts with 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole) (L). In both 1 and 2 zinc ion is five-co-ordinated, showing a less-common trigonal bipyramidal co-ordination polyhedron, while cadmium ion of 3 is six-co-ordinated with a common octahedral arrangement. The sulfate ions of 1 and 3 are co-ordinated, however the nitrate ions of 2 are not. Each of the three compounds is composed of a (6, 3) network with the hexagonal smallest circuit containing six metal ions and six L; each L is co-ordinated to two metal ions, acting as a bridging ligand. In 1 the 2-D sheet of (6, 3) networks is interpenetrated in an inclined mode by symmetry related, identical sheets to give an interlocked 3-D structure, while the (6, 3) networks of both 2 and 3 stack in a parallel fashion to construct frameworks having channels.

Three novel series of monomers, namely n-1-bromo-[4-(4-methoxyphenylazo)phenyloxy]-alkanes (Bn, n = 3, 6, 10), n-[4-(4-methoxyphenylazo) phenyloxy]alkyloxy-4-methoxybenzene (Cn, n = 3, 6, 10) and n-[4-(4-methoxyphenylazo)phenyloxyl]alkyloxy-[4-methoxy-2,5-bis-(chloromethyl)] benzene (Dn, n = 3, 6, 10) were synthesized and characterized with FTIR, H-1 NMR, UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy. Their thermal behaviour was studied by different scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy. The results show that B3, B6 and C6 exhibit monotropic nematic liquid crystalline behaviour.

Ion - molecule reactions of disubstituted benzene with ion system of acetone and deuterium - labelled acetone under chemical ionization conditions were examined and the fragmentation reactions of the adduct ions formed by the ion - molecule reactions were studied using collision - induced dissociation (CID) technique. It was found that the electron - releasing groups favored the adduct reactions, whereas the electron - withdrawing groups did not. The position and properties of substituted groups affected the relative abundance of the adduct ions. The fragmentation reaction of the adduct ion formed by ortho - phenylenediamine with acetyl ion was similar to the reductive alkylation reaction of amine in condensed phase.

Novel poly(aryl ether ketone)s containing a lateral methoxy group were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4'-biphenol and methoxyhydroquinone with 1,4-bis(4-fluorobenzoyl)benzene in a sulfolane solvent in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate. Their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were characterized by a variety of experimental techniques, e.g. differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized light microscopy and temperature-dependent FTIR. Thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviour was observed in the copolymers containing 30-80 mol-% mexthoxyhydroquinone. Both melting (T-m) and isotropization (T-i) transitions appeared in the DSC curves. The polarized light microscopy study of the liquid crystalline copolymers suggested their ordered smectic structures. As expected, the copolymers had lower melting transitions than the biphenol-based homopoly(aryl ether ketone)s because of the copolymerization effect of the crystal-disrupting monomer methoxyhydroquinone.

Thin films of an organo-soluble polyimide based on 1,4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene dianhydride (HQDPA) and 2,2'-dimethyl-4,4'-methylene dianiline (DMMDA) have been studied. A prism coupler was used to measure the refractive indices. The average refractive indices of thin films prepared by annealing at different temperatures and times were chosen to characterize the condensation states of thin films. Thin films annealed at 200 degrees C show irreversible changes in physical properties, eg solubility. FTIR spectroscopy showed that the chain structures of the above thin films remained unchanged. It is proposed that specific molecular interactions induce the irreversible changes revealed by fluorescence spectroscopy. (C) 2000 Society of Chemical Industry.

Reaction of NdCl3, with AlCl3 and mesitylene in benzene gives complex [Nd(eta (6)-1,3,5-C6H3Me3) (AlCl4)(3)] (C6H6) (1) which was characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, MS and X-lay diffractions. The X-ray determination indicates that 1 has a distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometry and crystallizes in the monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n with a = 0.9586(2), b = 1.1717(5), c = 2.8966(7) nm, beta = 90.85 (2)degrees, V = 3.2529(6) nm(3), D-c = 1.573 g/cm(3), Z = 4. A comparison of bond parameters for all the reported Ln(eta (6)-Ar) (AlCl4)(3) complexes indicates that the bond distance of Ln-C is shortened with the increasing of methyl group on benzene and with the decreasing of radius of lanthanide ions.

A novel morphology of TPBD crystals consisting of a three-dimensional interlaced network was obtained by casting the self-seeded 0.1% benzene solution onto carbon-boated mica. Both the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED) analyses showed that the network was composed of well-developed lamellae. It is imagined this interesting morphology is the results of asymmetrical growth of the original TPBD lamellae on the amorphous interface, and that their preferred orientation changed when they encountered each other.

In order to understand the relationship between the molecular orientation and optical properties of oligophenylenevinylene film, oriented thin films of 1,4-di(p-methoxystyryl)benzene (DSB-1) and 1,4-di(p-methoxystyryl)-2,5-dimethoxybenzene (DSB-2) were fabricated on a potassium bromide (KBr) (001) surface by the vacuum-evaporation method. The structures and optical properties of DSB films have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and polarized photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, respectively. DSB-1 molecules orient obliquely and/or parallel to the substrate surface depending on the substrate temperature. On the other hand, DSB-2 molecules tend to grow epitaxially with the molecular plane parallel to the substrate surface. The anisotropic molecular orientations represent the polarized PL. The epitaxial growth and molecular orientations observed by TEM and AFM at the local and microscopic scale are confirmed by polarized PL measurement on a macroscopic scale. Polyimides were prepared from diamines: 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3-phenylenediamine (3MPDA) and 2,3,4,5-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (4MPDA). 1,4-Bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene dianhydride (HQDPA), 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), 3,3'-4,4'-diphenylsulphone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (SO(2)PDA), 3,3',4,4'-diphenylsulphide tetracarboxylic dianhydride (SPDA), pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), and 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)hexa-fluoroisopropane dianhydride (6FDA) were used as dianhydride. The gas permeabilities of H-2, O-2 and N-2 through the polyimides were measured at temperatures from 30 degrees C to 90 degrees C. The results show that as methyl and trifluoromethyl substitution groups densities increase from 7.73 x 10(-3) molcm(-3) to 13.50 x 10(-3)molcm(-3), the peameability of H-2 increases 10-fold at 60% loss of permselectivity of H-2/N-2 however, the permeability of O-2 increases 20-fold at 20% loss of permselectivity of O-2/N-2. For O-2/N-2 separation, PMDA-3MPDA has similar performance to 6FDA-3MPDA and 6FDA-4MPDA; all have higher permeabilities for O-2 than normal polyimides, and the P(O-2)/alpha(O-2/N-2) trade-off relationships lie on the upper bound line for polymers. New aromatic diamines [(1) and (2)] containing polycycloalkane structures between two benzene rings were synthesized by HCl-catalyzed condensation reaction of aniline hydrochloride and corresponding polycycloalkanone derivatives. The structures of diamines were identified by H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR, FTIR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The polyimides were synthesized from the obtained diamines with various aromatic dianhydrides by one-step polymerization in m-cresol. The inherent viscosities of the resulting polyimides were in the range of 0.34-1.02 dL/g. The polyimides showed good thermal stabilities and solubility. All the polymers were readily soluble in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, m-cresol, tetrachloroethane, etc. Some of them were soluble even in chloroform at room temperature. The glass transition temperatures were observed in the range of 323-363 degrees C, and all of the polymers were stable up to 400 degrees C under nitrogen atmosphere. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
