Multilayer films composed of heteropolyanions (HPAS, SiMo11 VO405-) and cationic polymer poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) on 4-aminothiophenol self-assembled-monolayer were fabricated by electrochemical growth. Growth processes of the composite films were characterized by cyclic voltammetry. The results prove the third redox peak of Mo increases more rapidly, otherwise the other Mo redox peaks increase very slowly when the number of layers of heteropolyanions is greater. The peak potentials of composite films shift linearly to negative position with higher pH, which implies that protons are involved in the redox processes of HPA. The investigation of electrocatalytic behaviors of composite films shows a good catalytic activity for the reductions of HNO2 and BrO3-. Catalytic currents increase with increasing number of layers of heteropolyanions, moreover, the catalytic currents have a good linear relationship with the concentrations of BrO3-.

Novel ceramic-carbon electrodes (CCEs) containing 1:12-phosphomolybdic acid (PMo12) were constructed by homogeneously dispersing PMo12 and graphite powder into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived gel. Peak currents for the PMo12-doped CCE were surface-controlled at lower scan rates but diffusion-controlled at higher scan rates and peak potentials shifted to the negative potential direction with increasing pH. In addition, the electrode exhibited electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of ascorbic acid. The PMo12-modified CCE presented good chemical and mechanical stability and good surface renewability (ten successive polishing resulted in less than 5% relative standard deviation). Two new compounds, [CoL2(H2O)(2)](NO3)(2). 8H(2)O (1) and [CoL(H2O)(2)(CH3CO2)(2)]. H2O (2), were obtained from self-assembly of the corresponding metal salts with 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(benzimidazole) (L). In 1, each cobalt ion is coordinated to four nitrogen atoms from four molecules of L, and to two water molecules. Metal ions are bridged by L ligands to form infinite (4, 4) networks that contain 44-membered rings. The (4, 4) networks of 1 stack in a parallel fashion, resulting in the formation of large channels in the material. In 2, each cobalt ion is coordinated to two N atoms from two L molecules, two water molecules and two carboxylate O atoms from two acetate anions. Each L molecule is coordinated to two cobalt ions, acting as a bridging ligand as in 1. The bridged cobalt ions form an infinite zigzag chain structure.

Two modification methods for multilayer formation, i.e. immersion growth and electrochemical growth, were studied comparatively for their influence on the electrochemical behavior and the electrocatalytic properties of the thus-fabricated SiMo11V-containing multilayer films. Electrochemical growth was proven to be a more suitable method than immersion growth in preparing uniform ultrathin multilayer self-assemblies with good functions. We investigated the effects of scan rate and pH on the electrochemical behavior of the monolayer and multilayer films. We also compared the electrocatalytic effects on the reduction of BrO3- and HNO2 by the multilayer films prepared by the two methods. Moreover, the influence of multilayer thickness and the identity of the outermost layer on the electrocatalytic properties were studied. Much higher catalytic currents appeared on the thicker multilayer films than those on the thinner ones. On the other hand, the catalytic currents became smaller when the multilayer films with SiMo11V as the outermost layer were covered with an additional quarternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) layer partially complexed with osmium bis(2,2'-bypyridine) chloride (QPVP-Os layer). These influences were believed to be due to the different quantities of electrocatalyst loaded in the multilayer films and the blocking effect of the QPVP-Os outermost layer. Hybrid bilayer membrane consisting of self-assembled alkanethiol and lipid monolayer on gold electrode was fabricated by the paint - freeze method. The interaction of a kind of polyanion, K7Fe3+P2W17O62H2 with such bilayer membrane was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and ac impedance. The hybrid bilayer membrane on the gold electrode showed remarkable insulating property, however, the property was lessened to some extent after interaction with the polyanion. It was found the process was in-eversible. It is presumed that the interaction between the polyanion and lipid is an interaction of K7Fe3+P2W17O62H2 with the polar head group of PC, which lessens the interaction among PC polar head groups. The resulting molecular arrangement becomes looser, even some pores are produced.

Reaction of thiamine or thiamine monophosphate (TMP) with K2Pt(NO2)(4) afforded a metal complex, Pt(thiamine)(NO2)(3) (1), and two salt-type compounds, (H-thiamine)[Pt(NO2)(4)]. 2H(2)O (2) and (TMP)(2)[Pt(NO2)(4)]. 2H(2)O (3), which were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. In 1, the square-planar Pt2+ ion is coordinated to the pyrimidine N(1'), a usual metal-binding site, and three NO2- groups. The thiamine molecule exists as a monovalent cation in 1 and a divalent cation in 2 while the TMP molecule is a monovalent cation in 3. In each compound, thiamine or TMP adopts the usual F conformation and forms two types of host-guest-like interactions with anions, which are of the bridging forms, C(2)-H . . . anion . . . pyrimidine-ring and N(4'1)-H(...)anion(...)thiazolium-ring. In 3, there is an additional anion-bridging interaction between the pyrimidine and thiazolium rings of TMP, being of the form C(6')-H . . . anion . . . thiazolium-ring. The salts 2 and 3 show similar hydrogen-bonded cyclic dimers of thiamine or TMP between which the anions are held. Results are compared with those of the other thiamine-platinum complexes. New typical ionic clusters with complex anions could be formed directly from the KNO3 aqueous solution by means of the electrospray ionization mass spectrometry(ESIMS). The difference between the neighboring peaks(m/z), which corresponded to the molecule weight of KNO3 being 101 in the full mass spectrometry of the positive-ion and the negative-ion. The general formula of the ionic clusters belonged to K+(KNO3)(n) and NO3- (KNO3)(m).

The first mononuclear tungsten-citrato complex, (NH4)(3)[Li(H2O)(3)WO3(C6H4O7)] (1) has been prepared by the reaction of ammonium tetrathio tungstate and lithium citrate in CH3OH - H2O solution at pH 8.2. There are two crystallographically independent anions in the asymmetric crystallographic unit. The crystal structure of the title compound (triclinic, space group P (1) over bar, a = 6.901(1), b = 15.136(3), c = 16.107(3) Angstrom, alpha = 75.85(3), beta = 89.89(3), gamma = 89.97(3), V = 1631.4(6) Angstrom (3), R = 0.068, R-w = 0.1674 for 3878 reflections with I > 2 sigma (1)), reveals that in the compound a tungsten atom is coordinated to a fully deprotonated citrate as a tridentate ligand and three terminal oxygen atoms to form a distorted coordination octahedron.

Ultrathin multilayer films of a polybasic lanthanide heteropoly tungstate-molybdate complex and a cationic polymer of quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with osmium bis(2,2'-bipyridine) have been fabricated on a gold electrode precoated with a cysteamine self-assembled monolayer. The multilayer films have been characterized by optical spectroscopy, small-angle X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical methods (cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance). Especially, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is developed to monitor the layer deposition processes. It provides important information such as double-layer capacitance and charge-transfer resistance. All obtained results reveal regular film growth with each layer adsorption. A novel method for the highly sensitive determination of perchlorate was proposed. It was based on solvent extraction in the presence of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) followed by Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) electrochemiluminescent determination. A linear calibration was obtained over the range of 0.1 to 10 mu mol l(-1) with a correlation coefficient of 0.998. The detection limit (S/N = 3) was 5.0 x 10(-8) mol l(-1). The relative standard deviation for 10 replicates of 1 mu mol l(-1) perchlorate was 1.6%. Interference studies suggest that this method is selective for the determination of perchlorate. Application of this method to the highly sensitive determination of other anions is suggested. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) was used to study a series of synthetic cationic porphyrins as the perchlorate and bromide salts. This work presents the analytical results for the porphyrins obtained using 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB) and 1,8,9-anthratriol as matrices. The selective use of matrix affects ion formation from these porphyrins. By using DHB as the matrix, we not only observed [M - nCIO(4)](+) (n = 1-4) ions, but also obtained [2M - nCIO(4)](+) (n = 2-7) ions from the synthetic cationic porphyrins. The space volume of the side chains (R groups) and the nature of the anions (Br- or CIO4-) affected the relative importance of monomeric and dimeric ions of the porphyrin. The possible mechanisms of desorption and ionization of these cationic porphyrins were also considered in this study. MALDI-TOFMS proved to be a very useful method for obtaining structural information on these synthetic cationic porphyrins. Copyright (C) 1999 John Whey & Sons, Ltd.

The effects of heteropoly acids and Triton X-100 on electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) are investigated. Triton X-100 prevents the oxidation of oxalate and results in an increase of the ECL signal. H5SiW11VO40 prevents the direct oxidation of oxalate and makes the electrochemical behavior of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) less reversible, which leads to a decrease of the ECL signal. In contrast, H3PMo12O40 has negligible effect on ECL intensity. Some possible reasons for the effects on the ECL of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) are discussed based on the adsorption of SiW11VO405- on electrode surface and the ion association between SiW11VO405- and Ru(bpy)(3)(2+). The signal of ECL decreases linearly with the concentration of heteropoly acid in the range from 2x10-6 to 1x10(-4) mol l(-1). The results indicate that ECL of RU(bpy)(3)(2+) is a potential sensitive and selective detection method for heteropoly acids and hence for the elements comprised in them.
