Self-organized InAs quantum; dots sheets are grown on GaAs(100) substrate and tapped by 80nm GaAs layer with molecular beam epitaxy. Samples were annealed and characterized with Raman spectra, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and photolumincscence (PL). The Raman spectra indicates arsenic clusters in the GaAs capping layer. The TEM analysis revealed the relaxation of strain in some InAs islands with the introduction of the network of 90 dislocations. In addition, the structural changes also lead to the changes of the PL spectra from me InAs islands. Their correlation was discussed, Our results suggest:est that annealing may be used to intentionally modify me properties of self-organized InAs islands on GaAs.

The paper reports a method of depositing SiO2, SiNx, a:Si, Si3N4 and SiOxNy dielectric thin films by electron cyclotron resonance plasma chemical vapor deposition (ECR CVD) on InP, InGaAs and other compound semiconductor optoelectronic devices, and give a technology of depositing dielectric thin films and optical coatings by ECR CVD on Laser's Bars. The experiment results show the dielectric thin films and optical coatings are stable at thermomechanical property, optical properties and the other properties. In addition, the dielectric thin film deposition that there is low leakage current is reported for using as diffusion and ion implatation masks in the paper. In the finally, the dielectric film refractive index can be accurately controlled by the N-2/O-2/Ar gas flow rate.

A type of thermo-optic variable optical attenuator based on multimode interference coupler is proposed. The optical field propagation properties of the devices are simulated using finite difference beam propagation method. The propagation loss of the fabricated device is 2-4.2 dB at the wavelength range 1510-1610 nm. The total power consumption is 370 mW and the maximum attenuation is more than 25 dB, which almost can meet the requirements of optical fiber communication systems.

This paper presents an introduction to the application of ion traps and storage devices for cluster physics. Some experiments involving cluster ions in trapping devices such as Penning traps, Paul traps, quadrupole or multipole linear traps are briefly discussed. Electrostatic ion storage rings and traps which allow for the storage of fast ion beams without mass limitation are presented as well. We also report on the recently developed mini-ring, a compact electrostatic ion storage ring for cluster, molecular and biomolecular ion studies.

ZnO:Al thin films with c-axis preferred orientation were deposited on glass and Si substrates using RF magnetron sputtering technique. The effect of substrate on the structural and optical properties of ZnO:Al films were investigated. The results showed a strong blue peak from glass-substrate ZnO:Al film whose intensity became weak when deposited on Si substrate. However, the full width at half maxima (FWHM) of the Si-substrate ZnO:Al (0 0 2) peaks decreased evidently and the grain size increased. Finally, we discussed the influence of annealing temperature on the structural and optical properties of Si-substrate ZnO:Al films. After annealing, the crystal quality of Si-substrate ZnO:Al thin films was markedly improved and the intensity of blue peak (similar to 445 nm) increased noticeably. This observation may indicate that the visible emission properties of the ZnO:Al films are dependent more on the film crystallinity than on the film stoichiometry. A new and synthetically versatile strategy has been developed for the phosphorescence color tuning of cyclometalated iridium phosphors by simple tailoring of the phenyl ring of ppy (Hppy=2-phenylpyridine) with various main-group moieties in [Ir(ppy-X)(2)(acac)] (X=B(Mes)(2), SiPh3, GePh3, NPh2, POPh2, OPh, SPh, SO2Ph). This can be achieved by shifting the charge-transfer character from the pyridyl groups in some traditional iridium ppy-type complexes to the electron-withdrawing main-group moieties and these assignments were supported by theoretical calculations.

With the goal to provide organometallic triplet emitters with good hole-injection/hole-transporting properties, highly amorphous character for simple solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes, and negligible triplet-triplet (T-T) annihilation, a series of new phosphorescent cyclometalated Ir-III and Pt-II complexes with triphenylamine-anchored fluorenylpyridine dendritic ligands were synthesized and characterized. The photophysical, thermal, electrochemical and electroluminescent properties of these molecules are reported.

A trivalent neodymium ion (Nd3+) complex Nd(PM)(3)(TP)(2) was synthesized, and its optical properties was studied by introducing Judd-Ofelt theory to calculate the radiative transition rate and the radiative decay time of the F-4(3/2) -> (4)l(J), transitions in this Nd(III) complex. The strong emissions of this complex at near-infrared region were owing to the efficient energy transfer from ligands to center metal ion. The potential application of this complex in NIR electroluminescence was studied by fabricating several devices. The maximum NIR irradiance was obtained as 2.1 mW/m(2) at 16.5 V.

Inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) with attractive electronic, optical, magnetic, thermal and catalytic properties have attracted great interest due to their important applications in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, materials science and interdisciplinary fields. Biomolecule-NP hybrid systems, which combine recognition and catalytic properties of biomolecules with electronic, optical, magnetic and catalytic properties of NPs, are particularly new materials with synergistic properties originating from the components of the hybrid composites. The biomolecule-NP hybrid system has excellent prospects for interfacing biological recognition events with electronic signal transduction so as to design a new generation of bioelectronic devices with high sensitivity.

In the organic-inorganic perovskites family, the < 100 >-oriented type has been extensively investigated as a result of its unique magnetic, optical, and electrical properties, and only one type of < 110 >-oriented hybrid perovskite stabilized by methylammonium and iodoformamidinium cations or the latter themselves has been known so far. In this paper, another novel < 110 >-oriented organic-inorganic perovskite (C6H13N3)-PbBr4 (compound 1) has been prepared by reacting N-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole (API) with PbBr2 in hydrobromic acid. The crystal structure is determined, which indicates that the perovskite is stabilized by API. The introduction of the optically active organic ligand API into the hybrid perovskite results in a red shift and a great enhancement of photoluminescence in the perovskite with respect to organic ligand API itself. These results have been explained according to calculation based on density-functional theory. Moreover, the excellent film processing ability for the perovskite (C6H13N3)PbBr4 together with the improved optical properties makes it have potential application in optoelectronic devices.

A series of new PPV oligomers containing 8-substituted quinoline, 2,2'-(arylenedivinylene) bis-8-quinoline derivatives, were designed and synthesized via a Knoevenagel condensation reaction of quinaldine, 8-hydroxy-or 8-methoxy-quinaldine with aromatic dialdehydes. These PPV oligomers were characterized by H-1 and C-13-NMR, X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopies. The X-ray diffraction investigation showed that there are intermolecular pi...pi interactions in the solid state in 1 and 3. The optical and photoluminescent properties study demonstrated that the emission color of the resulting materials varies from blue to yellow and is dependent on the substituents (pi-donor and pi-acceptor groups) on both sides of the conjugated molecules and the aromatic core in the middle of the conjugated backbones. The electroluminescent devices using compounds 1-4 as the emitters and electron-transporting layers were fabricated with the structure ITO/NPB/emitter/LiF/Al. The best device performance with the maximum brightness of 5530 cd m(-2) and the luminous efficiency of 2.4 cd A(-1) is achieved by using compound 4, with intramolecular charge transfer character, as the emitter; these values represent a more than 5-fold improvement in brightness and efficiency compared to compound 3 without methoxy groups on the phenyl rings.

A novel terbium complex, Tb(acac)(3)AAP (acac: acetylacetone, AAP: 4-amino-antipyrine), was synthesized and its luminescent properties were studied. When it was used as an emitting center, triple-layer-type device with a structure of glass substrate/ITO (indium-tin oxide)/TPD (N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine)./Tb(acac)(3)AAP/PBD (2-(4-biphenyl)-5-(4-t-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole) or Alq(3) (tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum)/Al (aluminum) exhibited bright characteristic emission of terbium ion upon applying d.c. voltage. The maximum luminance of the device is 56 cd/m(2) at 19 V and the maximum luminance efficiency is 0.357 lm/W.

The microcavity is sandwiched between a quarterwavelength distributed Bragg reflector(DBR) and a metal Ag reflective mirror. A single layer of a Tris(8-quinolinolato)aluminum (Alq) film was used as the light-emitting layer. The photoluminescent properties of the optical microcavity and that of the Alq film were studied at the same excitation condition. Compared with the Alq film, the significantly narrowed spectral emission linewidth from 90 nm to 10 nm was observed, the PL emission intensity of the microcavity at the resonant mode is enhanced by the order of 1. The spectral narrowing and intensity enhancement of the microcavity is attributed to the microcavity effect.

The spontaneous emission properties of a single layer organic film in plane optical microcavities were studied. Optical microcavity was formed by a Tris(8-quinolinolato) aluminium (Alq) film sandwiched between a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) and a Ag metallic reflector. Two kinds of microcavities were devised by using a different DBR structure. Compared with a Alq film, significantly spectral narrowing and intensity enhancement was observed in the two microcavities, which is attributed to the microcavity effect. The spectra characteristics of the two microcavities showed that the structure of DBR has much influence on the emission properties of a microcavity. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A.
