Although metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) is generally regarded as a non-equillibrium process, it can be assumed that a chemical equilibrium is established at the vapor-solid interface in the diffusion limited region of growth rate. In this paper, an equilibrium model was proposed to calculate the relation between vapor and solid compositions for II-VI ternary alloys. Metastable alloys in the miscibility gap may not be obtained when the growth temperature is lower than the critical temperature of the system. The influence of growth temperature, reactor pressure, input VI/II ratio, and input composition of group VI reactants has been calculated for ZnSSe, ZnSeTe and ZnSTe. The results are compared with experimental data for the ZnSSe and ZnSTe systems.
Numerical analysis of four-wave-mixing based multichannel wavelength conversion techniques in fibers
Resumo:
We numerically investigate four-wave-mixing (FWM) based multichannel wavelength conversion for amplitude-modulated signals, phase-modulated signals, together with mixed amplitude and phase modulated signals. This paper also discusses the influence of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effects on high-efficiency FWM-based wavelength conversion applications. Our simulation results show that DPSK signals are more suitable for FWM-based multichannel wavelength conversion because the OOK signals will suffer from the inevitable datapattern-dependent pump depletion. In future applications, when the modulation format is partially upgraded from OOK to DPSK, the influence of OOK signals on the updated DPSK signals must be considered when using multichannel wavelength conversion. This influence becomes severe with the increase of OOK channel number. It can be concluded that DPSK signals are more appropriate for both transmission and multichannel wavelength conversion, especially in long haul and high bit-rate system.

Lattice matched Ga_(1-x)In_xAs_ySb_(1-y) quaternary alloy films for thermophotovoltaic cells were successfully grown on n-type GaSb substrates by liquid phase epitaxy. Mirror-like surfaces for the epitaxial layers were achieved and evaluated by atomic force microscopy. The composition of the Ga_(1-x)In_xAs_ySb_(1-y) layer was characterized by energy dispersive X-ray analysis with the result that x = 0.2, y = 0.17. The absorption edges of the Ga_(1-x)In_xAs_ySb_(1-y) films were determined to be 2. 256μm at room temperature by Fourier transform infrared transmission spectrum analysis, corresponding to an energy gap of 0.55eV. Hall measurements show that the highest obtained electron mobility in the undoped p-type samples is 512cm2~/(V·s) and the carrier density is 6. 1×10~(16)cm~(-3) at room temperature. Finally, GaInAsSb based thermophotovoltaic cells in different structures with quantum efficiency values of around 60% were fabricated and the spectrum response characteristics of the cells are discussed.

High-resolution X-ray diffraction has been employed to investigate the diffuse scattering in a (0001) oriented GaN epitaxial film grown on sapphire substrate. The analysis reveals that defect clusters are present in GaN films and their concentration increases as the density of threading dislocations increases. Meanwhile, the mean radius of these defect clusters shows a reverse tendency. This result is explained by the effect of clusters preferentially forming around dislocations, which act as effective sinks for the segregation of point defects. The electric mobility is found to decrease as the cluster concentration increases.

The extraordinary transmission of the subwavelength gold grating has been investigated by the rigorous coupled-wave analysis and verified by the metal-insulator-metal plasmonic waveguide method. The physical mechanisms of the extraordinary transmission are characterized as the excitation of the surface plasmon polariton modes. The subwavelength grating integrated with the distributed Bragg reflector is proposed to modulate the phase to realize spatial mode selection, which is prospected to be applied for transverse mode selection in the vertical cavity surface-emitting laser.

A novel ameliorated phase generated carrier (PGC) demodulation algorithm based on arctangent function and differential-self-multiplying (DSM) is proposed in this paper. The harmonic distortion due to nonlinearity and the stability with light intensity disturbance (LID) are investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The nonlinearity of the PGC demodulation algorithm has been analyzed and an analytical expression of the total-harmonic-distortion (THD) has been derived. Experimental results have confirmed the low harmonic distortion of the ameliorated PGC algorithm as expected by the theoretical analysis. Compared with the traditional PGC-arctan and PGC-DCM algorithm, the ameliorated PGC algorithm has a much lower THD as well as a better signal-to-noise-and-distortion (SINAD). A THD of below 0.1% and a SINAD of 60 dB have been achieved with PGC modulation depth (value) ranges from 1.5 to 3.5 rad. The stability performance with LID has also been studied. The ameliorated PGC algorithm has a much higher stability than the PGC-DCM algorithm. It can keep stable operations with LID depth as large as 26.5 dB and LID frequency as high as 1 kHz. The system employing the ameliorated PGC demodulation algorithm has a minimum detectable phase shift of 5 mu rad/root Hz @ 1 kHz, a large dynamic range of 120 dB @ 100 Hz, and a high linearity of better than 99.99%.

In two papers [Proc. SPIE 4471, 272-280 (2001) and Appl. Opt. 43, 2709-2721 (2004)], a logarithmic phase mask was proposed and proved to be effective in extending the depth of field; however, according to our research, this mask is not that perfect because the corresponding defocused modulation transfer function has large oscillations in the low-frequency region, even when the mask is optimized. So, in a previously published paper [Opt. Lett. 33, 1171-1173 (2008)], we proposed an improved logarithmic phase mask by making a small modification. The new mask can not only eliminate the drawbacks to a certain extent but can also be even less sensitive to focus errors according to Fisher information criteria. However, the performance comparison was carried out with the modified mask not being optimized, which was not reasonable. In this manuscript, we optimize the modified logarithmic phase mask first before analyzing its performance and more convincing results have been obtained based on the analysis of several frequently used metrics. A four-phase confocal elliptical cylinder model is proposed from which a generalised self-consistent method is developed for predicting the thermal conductivity of coated fibre reinforced composites. The method can account for the influence of the fibre section shape ratio on conductivity, and the physical reasonableness of the model is demonstrated by using the fibre distribution function. An exact solution is obtained for thermal conductivity by applying conformal mapping and Laurent series expansion techniques of the analytic function. The solution to the three-phase confocal elliptical model, which simulates composites with idealised fibre-matrix interfaces, is arrived at as the degenerated case. A comparison with other available micromechanics methods, Hashin and Shtrikman's bounds and experimental data shows that the present method provides convergent and reasonable results for a full range of variations in fibre section shapes and for a complete spectrum of the fibre volume fraction. Numerical results show the dependence of the effective conductivities of composites on the aspect ratio of coated fibres and demonstrate that a coating is effective in enhancing the thermal transport property of a composite. The present solutions are helpful to analysis and design of composites.

The present study has attempted to investigate phase inversion and frictional pressure gradients during simultaneous vertical flow of oil and water two-phase through upward and downward pipes. The liquids selected were white oil (44 mPa s viscosity and 860 kg/m3 density) and water. The measurements were made for phase velocities varying from 0 to 1.24 m/s for water and from 0 to 1.87 m/s for oil, respectively. Experiments were carried either by keeping the mixture velocity constant and increasing the dispersed phase fraction or by keeping the continuous phase superficial velocity constant and increasing the dispersed phase superficial velocity. From the experimental results, it is shown that the frictional pressure gradient reaches to its lower value at the phase inversion point in this work. The points of phase inversion are always close to an input oil fraction of 0.8 for upward flow and of 0.75 for downward flow, respectively. A few models published in the literature are used to predict the phase inversion point and to compare the results with available experimental data. Suitable methods are suggested to predict the critical oil holdup at phase inversion based on the different viscosity ratio ranges. Furthermore, the frictional pressure gradient is analyzed with several suitable theoretical models according to the existing flow patterns. The analysis reveals that both the theoretical curves and the experimental data exhibit the same trend and the overall agreement of predicted values with experimental data is good, especially for a high oil fraction.

Thermally induced evolution of phase transformations is a basic physical-chemical process in the dissociation of gas hydrate in sediment (GHS). Heat transfer leads to the weakening of the bed soil and the simultaneous establishment of a time varying stress field accompanied by seepage of fluids and deformation of the soil. As a consequence, ground failure could occur causing engineering damage or/and environmental disaster. This paper presents a simplified analysis of the thermal process by assuming that thermal conduction can be decoupled from the flow and deformation process. It is further assumed that phase transformations take place instantaneously. Analytical and numerical results are given for several examples of simplified geometry. Experiments using Tetra-hydro-furan hydrate sediments were carried out in our laboratory to check the theory. By comparison, the theoretical, numerical and experimental results on the evolution of dissociation fronts and temperature in the sediment are found to be in good agreement.

Solidification behavior and microstructural evolution of surface modified layers in plasma cladding technique are studied via numerical simulations. Both the coupling effect of temperature and solid volume fraction are considered in the proposed thermal analytical model, by which the transient temperature distributions are calculated and the shape of melting pool is determined. Furthermore, we perform microscopic thermal analysis on the nucleation and growth behaviors of ceramic hardening phases and dendrites, as well as the kinetics of related two-phase flow systems. By comparing with experimental observations, the evolution mechanisms of the morphology of Al2O3 ceramic hardening layer are explained. Based on the above results, a relationship among the scanning velocity of plasma stream, dendritic growth rate and the advancing speed of solid/liquid interface is found, and an energy criterion is proposed for predicting the pushing/engulfing transition of ceramic particles by grain growth fronts. Sand storm is a serious environmental threat to humans. Sand particles are transported by saltation and suspension, causing soil erosion in one place and deposition in another. In order to prevent and predict sand storms, the causes and the manners of particle motions must be studied in detail. In this paper a standard k-epsilon model is used for the gas phase simulation and the discrete element method (DEM) is used to predict the movements of particles using an in-house procedure. The data are summarized in an Eulerian-Eulerian regime after simulation to get the statistical particle Reynolds stress and particle collision stress. The results show that for the current case the Reynolds stress and the air shear stress predominate in the region 20-250 mm above the initial sand bed surface. However, in the region below 3 mm, the collision stress must be taken into account in predicting particle movement. The proton radioactivity half-lives of spherical proton emitters are calculated by the cluster model with the contribution of a centrifugal potential barrier considered separately. The results are compared with the experimental data and other theoretical data, and good agreement is found for most nuclei. In addition, two formulae are proposed for the proton decay half-life of spherical proton emitters through the least squares fit to the experimental data available, and could reproduce the experimental half-lives successfully.
