New neutral nickel(II) complexes bearing nonsymmetric bidentate pyrrole-imine chelate ligands (4a-d), [2-(ArNCH)C4H3N]Ni(PPh3)Ph [Ar=2,6-diisopropylphenyl (a), 2-methyl-6-isopropylphenyl (b), 2,6-diethylphenyl (c), 2-tert-butylphenyl (d)], have been prepared in good yields from the sodium salts of the corresponding ligands and trans-Ni(PPh3)(2)(Ph)Cl, and the structure of complex 4a has been confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. These neutral Ni(II) complexes were investigated as catalysts for the vinylic polymerization of norbornene. Using modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) as a cocatalyst, these complexes display very high activities and produce great mass polymers. Catalyst activity of up to 4.2 x 10(7) g (mol Ni h)(-1) and the viscosity-average molecular weight of polymer of up to 9.2 x 10(5) g mol(-1) were observed. Catalyst activity, polymer yield, and polymer molecular weight can be controlled over a wide range by the variation of reaction parameters such as Al-Ni ratio, norbornene-catalyst ratio, monomer concentration, polymerization reaction temperature and time.

Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is employed to investigate the effect of solution viscosity on the rate constants of electron transfer (ET) reaction between potassium ferricyanide in water and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) in 1,2-dichloroethane. Either tetrabutylammonium (TBA(+)) or ClO4- is chosen as the common ion in both phases to control the interfacial potential drop. The rate constant of heterogeneous ET reaction between TCNQ and ferrocyanide produced in-situ, k(12), is evaluated by SECM and is inversely proportional to the viscosity of the aqueous solution and directly proportional to the diffusion coefficient of K4Fe(CN)(6) in water when the concentration of TCNQ in the DCE phase is in excess. The k(12) dependence on viscosity is explained in terms of the longitudinal relaxation time of the solution. The rate constant of the heterogeneous ET reaction between TCNQ and ferricyanide, k(21), is also obtained by SECM and these results cannot be explained by the same manner.

The cyclization of neoprene was achieved with the aid of a cationic catalyst system based on diethylaluminum chloride (Et2AlCl) and an organic chloride, allyl chloride (CH2=CHCH2Cl) or benzyl chloride (C6H5CH2Cl). The main parameters of the cyclization process were investigated. Elastomers with low intrinsic viscosity, ready solubility and some gelling were obtained. Xylene was a good solvent for the cyclization process, which took place in a very short time (less than or equal to5 min). The products were characterized with IR, H-1-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, and gel permeation chromatography. The polycyclic structure was determined. The degree of cyctization and the incorporated solvent content were estimated with a H-1-NMR method.

Major, minor and trace elemental contents in northeast China soybeans were determined by using inductively, coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Three different sample digestion methods including two wet digestions, HNO3-HClO4 and HNO3-H2SO4 and a dry ash method were compared. Owing to the high oil content in soybeans, long time is needed and access acid should be added, with mixed acid digestion methods, which may result in higher sample blank. Therefore, the dry ask method would be more proper for the pre-treatment of soybean samples. Potassium and phosphorus are major elements in soybeans, so the effect of potassium and phosphorus on the other elements was investigated. Results showed that the potassium and phosphorus did not affect the determination. of other trace elements. There are not significant differences in trace elemental contents for the eleven northeast China soybeans.

4-Hydroxyphthalic anhydride, prepared from 4-chlorophthalic anhydride, was reacted with trimellitic anhydride monoacid chloride or arylene diacid chloride to give aromatic ester-containing dianhydrides (EDAs). These dianhydrides were characterized by element analysis, melt point, FTIR and H-1-NMR. A series of aromatic poly (amic ester acid)s was synthesized by polycondensation of these EDAs and various diamines in polar organic solvent. The inherent viscosity of poly (amic ester acid)s ranged from 0.55 to 0.89 dL/g, indicating the intermediate to higher molecular weight. Polyesterimides having glass transition temperatures between 184-219degreesC were produced by thermal imidization of corresponding poly (amic ester acid)s. These polymers were fairly resistant to organic solvent, but some of them were soluble in phenol solvents. Thermogravimetric analyses revealed that these polyesterimides were stable up to 400degreesC, and the 5% weight loss temperatures were recorded in the range of 432-483degreesC in air atmosphers and 451-490degreesC in nitrogen.

Rabies virus was used as the antigen to immunize laying chickens. Anti-rabies virus immunoglobulin Y(IgY) was isolated from yolks of the eggs laid by these chickens using a two-step salt precipitation and one-step gel filtration protocol. The purified IgY was reduced with dithiothreitol, and heavy chains (HC) and light chains (LC) were obtained. In addition, the purified IgY was digested with pepsin and the fragment with specific antigen binding properties (Fab) was produced. Using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS), the average molecular weights of IgY, HC, LC, and Fab were determined as 167 250, 65 105, 18 660, and 45,359 Da, respectively. IgY has two structural differences compared with mammalian IgGs. First, the molecular weight of the heavy chain of IgY is larger than that of its mammalian counterpart, while the molecular weight of the light chain of IgY is smaller. Second, upon pepsin digestion, anti-rabies virus IgY is degraded into Feb, in contrast to mammalian IgG, which has been reported to be degraded into F(ab')(2) under the same conditions. In order to investigate the influence of the main chain structure and molecular weight on the sensitivity of photosensitive ester-type precursor of polyimide (photo-PAE), an improved method was used to synthesize several kinds of photo-PAEs with relatively high molecular weight. Their sensitivities (at 365 nm) were investigated, and it was found that some additives such as sensitizer and photoinitiator had the greatest influence on the sensitivity of photo-PAE, that the photo-PAE with BPDA and mPDA as the main chain structure had the best sensitivity (D-0.5: 5-10 mJ/cm(2)) among the studied photo-PAEs, and that the sensitivity did not significantly change with the change of inherent viscosity of photo-PAE. Meanwhile, the thermal imidization of these photo-PAEs was also investigated by means of TGA and IR analyses. Additionally, a discussion was made for formulation of PSPI resist. A method for the analysis of mussel standard reference material by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry( ICP-AES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS) was developed. K, Na, Ca, Mg, P, Al, Fe, Zn, Mn and Sr were determined by ICP-AES and As, B, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ga, Ge, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, Sr, U and V by ICP-MS, The interference coefficients at the Mn-55, Se-78, Cu-63, Co-59, Ni-58, Ni-60, As-75, Se-77, V-51, Cr-53 and Cr-52 originating from polyatomic ion of the matrix elements (KO)-K-39-O-16, K-39(2), (ArNa)-Ar-40-Na-23, (CaO)-Ca-43-O-16, (CaO)-Ca-42-O-16, (CaO)-Ca-44-O-16, (PO2)-P-31-O-16, (ArCl)-Ar-40-Cl-35, (ArCl)-Ar-40-Cl-37, (ClO)-Cl-35-O-16, (ClO)-Cl-37-O-16 and (ArC)-Ar-40-C-12 were determined under the selected operation parameters. The major matrix elements, such as K, Na and Ca, result in the suppression of analytes signals. The apparent concentration at the significant biological element which was produced by the different digestion methods, (.) HNO3 + H2O2 (3 + 2), HNO3 + HClO4 (3 + 0.5) and HNO3 + H2SO4 (3 + 0.5),was determined. The sample digested by HNO3 + H2O2 did not give rise to interfere on the analyte, and the backgrounds of Se-77, Ga-69, Zn-67, As-75, V-51, Cr-53 and Cr-52 were increased by HNO3 + HClO4 digestion method, that affected the determination of these elements, especially the monoisotope As and V. Sample digested by HNO3 + H2SO4 increased the backgrounds at Cu-65, Zn-64 and Zn-67. Detection limits of ICP-AES are 0.001 similar to 0.75 mg/L and those of ICP-MS are 0.005 similar to 1.01 mu g/L. The relative standard derivations of ICP-AES and ICP-MS are 2.7% similar to 12.8%, 3.4% similar to 24.8%, respectively.

Novel optically active aromatic poly(amide-imide)s (PAIs) containing 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diyl units in the main chain were prepared by polycondensation reactions of newly synthesized dianhydride, 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxylzenzamido)-1,1'-binaphthyl dianhydride[(S)-BN-DADA and (+/-)-BNDADA], with diamines, The properties of the resulted PAIs were fully characterized by a combination of investigations on inherent viscosity, thermal properties(DSC and TGA), specific rotation, CD and UV-Vis absorbance. These PAIs showed good solubilities, thermal properties and optical stabilities. Interesting UV-Vis absorption behavior of films casted from these PAIs was observed and analyzed.

Noncompatibilized and compatibilized ABS-nylon1010 blends were prepared by melt mixing. Polystyrene and glycidyl methacrylate (SG) copolymer was used as a compatibilizer to enhance the interfacial adhesion and to control the morphology. This SG copolymer contains reactive glycidyl groups that are able to react with PA1010 end groups (-NH2 or -COOH) under melt conditions to form SG-g-Nylon copolymer. Effects of the compatibilizer SG on the rheological, thermal, and morphological properties were investigated by capillary rheometer, DSC, and SEM techniques. The compatibilized ABS-PA1010 blend has higher viscosity, lower crystallinity, and smaller phase domain compared to the corresponding noncompatibilized blend. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A numerical method to estimate temperature distribution during the cure of epoxy-terminated poly(phenylene ether ketone) (E-PEK)-based composite is suggested. The effect of the temperature distribution on the selection of cure cycle is evaluated using a suggested alternation criterion. The effect of varying heating rate and thickness on the temperature distribution, viscosity distribution and distribution of the extent of cure reaction are discussed based on the combination of the here-established temperature distribution model and the previously established curing kinetics model and chemorheological model. It is found that, for a thin composite (<=10mm) and low heating rate (<=2.5K/min), the effect of temperature distribution on cure cycle and on the processing window for pressure application can be neglected. Low heating rate is of benefit to reduce the temperature gradient. The processing window for pressure application becomes narrower with increasing thicknesses of composite sheets. The validity of the temperature distribution model and the modified processing window is evaluated through the characterization of mechanical and physical properties of E-PEK-based composite fabricated according to different temperature distribution conditions.

This paper introduces a new method to estimate the diffusion coefficient and transference number of a salt or an electroactive ion in a solution with little or no supporting electrolyte. The above two parameters can be obtained from a single potential step experiment without previous knowledge of either one. It would appear that the method could also be used in the study of ion transport in a high viscosity solvent or a solid electrolyte. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

The heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants (k(s)) of seven ferrocene derivatives were estimated using cyclic voltammograms under mixed spherical/semi-infinite linear diffusion and steady-state voltammetry at a microdisk electrode in polymer electrolyte. The k(s) and diffusion coefficient (D) are both 100 to 1000-fold smaller in polymer solvent than in monomeric solvents, and the D and k(s) decrease with increasing polymer chain length. The results conform to the difference of viscosity (eta) or relaxation time (tau(L)) for these different solvents. The k(s) and D increase with increasing temperature, and the activation barriers of the electrode reaction are obtained. The influences of the substituting group in the ferrocene ring on k(s) and D are discussed. The k(s) are proportional to the D of the ferrocene derivatives, which indicates that solvent dynamics control the electrode reaction. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

The curing temperature, pressure, and curing time have significant influence on finished thermosetting composite products. The time of pressure application is one of the most important processing parameters in the manufacture of a thermosetting composite. The determination of the time of pressure application relies on analysis of the viscosity variation of the polymer, associated with curing temperature and curing time. To determine it, the influence of the time of pressure application on the physical properties of epoxy-terminated poly(phenylene ether ketone) (E-PEK)-based continuous carbon fiber composite was studied. It was found that a stepwise temperature cure cycle is more suitable for manufacture of this composite. There are two viscosity valleys, in the case of the E-PEK system, associated with temperature during a stepwise cure cycle. The analysis on the effects of reinforcement fraction and defect content on the composite sheet quality indicates that the width-adjustable second viscosity valley provides a suitable pressing window. The viscosity, ranging from 400 to 1200 Pa . s at the second viscosity valley, is the optimal viscosity range for applying pressure to ensure appropriate resin flow during curing process, which enables one to get a finished composite with optimal fiber volume fraction and low void content. Chemorheology and corresponding models for an epoxy-terminated poly(phenylene ether ketone) (E-PEK) and 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) system were investigated using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and a cone-and-plate rheometer. For this system, the reported four-parameter chemorheological model and modified WLF chemorheological model can only be used in an isothermal or nonisothermal process, respectively. In order to predict the resin viscosity variation during a stepwise temperature cure cycle actually used, a new model based on the combination of the four-parameter model and the modified WLF model was developed. The combined model can predict the resin viscosity variation during a stepwise temperature cure cycle more accurately than the above two models. In order to simplify the establishment of this model, a new five-parameter chemorheological model was then developed. The parameters in this five-parameter model can be determined through very few rheology and DSC experiments. This model is practicable to describe the resin viscosity variation for isothermal, nonisothermal, or stepwise temperature cure cycles accurately. The five-parameter chemorheological model has also successfully been used in the E-PEK systems with two other curing agents, i.e., the diamine curing agent with the addition of a boron trifluride monoethylamine (BF3-MEA) accelerator and an anhydride curing agent (hexahydrophthalic acid anhydride).
