Starting from nitrate aqueous solutions with citric acid and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as additives, Y3Al5O12:Eu (YAG:Eu) phosphors were prepared by a two-step spray pyrolysis (SP) method. The obtained YAG:Eu phosphor particles have spherical shape, submicron size and smooth surface. The effects of process conditions of the spray pyrolysis on the crystallinity, morphology and luminescence properties of phosphor particles were investigated. The emission intensity of the phosphors increased with increasing of sintering temperature and solution concentration due to the increase of the crystallinity and particles size, respectively. Adequate amount of PEG was necessary for obtaining spherical particles, and the optimum emission intensity could be obtained when the concentration of PEG was 0.10 g/ml in the precursor solution. Compared with the YAG:Eu phosphor prepared by citrate-gel (CG) method with non-spherical morphology, spherical YAG:Eu phosphor particles showed a higher emission intensity.

The cloud-point temperatures (T-cl's) of trans-decahydronaphthalene(TD)/polystyrene (PS, (M) over bar (w) = 270 000) solutions were determined by light scattering measurements over a range of temperatures (1-16degreesC), pressures (100-900 bar), and compositions (4.2-21.6 vol.-% polymer). The system phase separates upon cooling and T-cl was found to increase with rising pressure for constant composition. In the absence of special effects, this finding indicates positive excess volume for the mixing. Special attention was paid to the demixing temperatures as a function of pressure for different polymer solutions and the plots in the T-phi plane (where phi signifies volume fractions). The cloud-point curves of polymer solutions under different pressures were observed for different compositions, which demonstrated that pressure has a greater effect on the TD/PS solutions when far from the critical point as opposed to near the critical point. The Sanchez-Lacombe lattice fluid theory (SLLFT) was used to calculate the spinodals, the binodals, the Flory-Huggins (FH) interaction parameter, the enthalpy of mixing, and the volume changes of mixing. The calculated results show that modified PS scaling parameters can describe the thermodynamics of the TD/PS system well. Moreover the SLLFT describes the experimental results well.

A nitrate-citrate combustion route to synthesize nanocrystalline samarium-doped ceria powders for solid electrolyte ceramics is presented. This route is based on the gelling of nitrate solutions by the addition of citric acid and ammonium hydroxide, followed by an intense combustion process due to an exothermic redox reaction between nitrate and citrate ions. The influence of ignition temperature on the characteristics of the powders was studied. The change of the crystal structure with the content of doped Sm was investigated. High temperature X-ray, and Raman scattering were used to characterize the sample. The lattice constant and unit volume increase with doping level and increasing temperature. Dense ceramic samples prepared by uniaxial pressing and sintering in air were also studied.

A new ionic conductor La2-xNdxMo2O9 (x=0.0-2.0) has been synthesized by wet-chemistry method. The precursors and the resultant oxide powders were characterized by DTA/TG, DSC, XRD and XPS techniques. Effect of substituting Nd for La reveals that the phase transition which occurs in La2Mo2O9 around 565degreesC disappears when x>0.2. And the maximum amount of Nd stabilized the high temperature phase of beta-La2Mo2O9 from cubic to tetragonal is about x=1.6. The measurements of impedance spectroscopy indicate that the ionic conductivity becomes considerably higher in comparison to that of La2Mo2O9.

A series of solid electrolytes, (Ce(0.8)Ln(0.2))(1 - x)MxO2 - delta(Ln = La, Nd, Sm, Gd, M:Alkali-earth), were prepared by amorphous citrate gel method. XRD patterns indicate that a pure fluorite phase is formed at 800 degreesC. The electrical conductivity and the AC impedance spectra were measured. XPS spectra show that the oxygen vacancies increase owing to the MO doping, which results in the increase of the oxygen ionic transport number and conductivity. The performance of ceria-based solid electrolyte is improved. The effects of rare-earth and alkali-earth ions on the electricity were discussed. The open-circuit voltages and maximum power density of planar solid oxide fuel cell using (Ce0.8Sm0.2)(1 - 0.05)Ca0.05O2 - delta as electrolyte are 0.86 V and 33 mW . cm(-2), respectively.

A novel polyimide precursor based on the dimethyl ester of 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic acid, 4,4'-methylene dianiline and the monomethyl ester of 5-norbornene-2,3-dicarboxylic acid (BPDE/MDA/NE) was prepared by a modified polymerization of monomeric reactants (PMR) approach (MPMR). The composition of the precursor was quantitatively characterized by means of FTIR, HPLC and GC. The fractions of imide, amic ester and amic acid units in the precursor, typically prepared by refluxing in 1,4-dioxane for 2 h, were 33.7, 30.8 and 1.1 mol-%, respectively. The portion of free MDA was 3.34 wt.-% as determined by HPLC.

A series of solid electrolytes Ce1-xGdxO2-x/2(x=0 similar to0.6) was prepared by sol-gel method. The structure, thermal expansion coefficient and electrical properties of the solid solutions were systematically studied. XRD data showed that a complete cubic fluorite structure was formed at 160 degreesC. The purity of the product prepared by the sol-gel method is higher, the grain size is uniformly smaller. They were easily sintered into highly dense ceramic pellets at 1 300 degreesC. The sintering temperature was significantly lower than that by traditionally high temperature solid phase reaction method. The thermal expansion coefficient of Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9, determined from high- temperature XRD data, is 8. 125 X 10(-6) K-1. Impedance spectra analyses showed that the grain-boundary resistance of the solid electrolyte prepared by sol-gel method was reduced or even eliminated. The conductivity of Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9 is 5.26 X 10(-3) S/cm at 600 degreesC. The activation energy (E-a) is 0.82 eV.

Ultrasonic absorption coefficients for ethylamine in heavy water (D2O) and in light water (H2O) have been measured in the frequency range from 0.8 to 220 MHz at 25 degrees C. A single relaxational process has been observed in these two kinds of solutions. From the concentration dependence of the ultrasonic relaxation parameters, and following the reaction mechanism proposed by Eigen et al. for ethylamine in H2O, the causes of the relaxations have been attributed to a perturbation of an equilibrium associated with a deuteron or proton transfer reaction. The rate and equilibrium constants have been estimated from deuterioxide or hydroxide ion concentration dependence of the relaxation frequency, and the kinetic isotope effects have been determined. In addition, the standard volume changes of the reactions have been calculated from the concentration dependence of the maximum absorption per wavelength, and the adiabatic compressibility has also been determined from the density and sound velocity for ethylamine in D2O and in H2O, respectively. These results are compared with those for propylamine and butylamine and are discussed in relation to the different kinetic properties between D2O and H2O, the reaction radii derived by Debye theory, and the structural properties of the reaction intermediate.

In order to investigate the influence of the main chain structure and molecular weight on the sensitivity of photosensitive ester-type precursor of polyimide (photo-PAE), an improved method was used to synthesize several kinds of photo-PAEs with relatively high molecular weight. Their sensitivities (at 365 nm) were investigated, and it was found that some additives such as sensitizer and photoinitiator had the greatest influence on the sensitivity of photo-PAE, that the photo-PAE with BPDA and mPDA as the main chain structure had the best sensitivity (D-0.5: 5-10 mJ/cm(2)) among the studied photo-PAEs, and that the sensitivity did not significantly change with the change of inherent viscosity of photo-PAE. Meanwhile, the thermal imidization of these photo-PAEs was also investigated by means of TGA and IR analyses. Additionally, a discussion was made for formulation of PSPI resist. The UV-visible absorption and fluorescence spectra of a soluble polyimide, YS-30, in several organic solvents were measured over a wide range of concentration. The experimental results show that there exist both intramolecular and intermolecular electron donor acceptor interactions for YS-30 molecules. The fluorescence behavior of YS-30 in N,N-dimethylacetamide and in chloroform solutions is similar in general, except that its ground-state intermolecular charge transfer emission is more obvious in N,N-dimethylacetamide solution. This difference is attributed to the greater extent of disruption of the chain packing by solvent or/and the more efficient radiationless energy dissipation process from the excited state complexes to chloroform. The intensity ratio of intermolecular charge transfer emission to intramolecular charge transfer emission is used to characterize the state of aggregation of YS-30 molecules in solutions. The plot of this ratio versus concentration indicates the existence of two critical concentrations. It is also found from the same plot that the decrease of coil size is very pronounced during the initial stage of shrinkage.

1:1 complexes of beta-cyclodextrin (CD) with three amino acids (Gly, Phe and Trp) have been detected as ions in the gas phase using infusion positive and negative ion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). In contrast with the positive ion ESI mass spectra of simple aqueous solutions, the aggregates and adducts usually formed in the ESI process did not appear in the positive ion ESI spectra of solutions buffered with ammonium acetate (NH4Ac), even at higher analyte concentrations, These studies suggest that addition of buffer and/or use of a low analyte concentration should be used to overcome formation of aggregates and metal ion adducts in such mass spectrometry studies. Also, the deprotonated complexes are dissociated by collision induced dissociation (CID) to form an abundant product ion, the deprotonated CD, requiring transfer of a proton to the amino acid carboxyl group, To understand formation of complexes in the gas phase, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was used to separate free amino acids (AAs) from complexes in an incubated solution. The ESI mass spectra of the GPC fractions show the presence of 1:1 complexes of both CD-aromatic amino acids and CD-aliphatic amino acids. Compared with CD-aliphatic amino acid complexes, CD-aromatic amino acid complexes appear to be destabilized in the gas phase, possibly because the hydrophobic interaction which binds the aromatic group of amino acids in the CD cavity in solution may become repulsive when solvent evaporates from the droplets during the electrospray process, whereas those complex ions formed as proton bound dimers are stabilized by electrostatic forces, the major binding force for such complexes in the gas phase. In addition, the GPC technique coupled with off-line ESI-MS can rapidly separate CD complexes by size, and provides some information on the character of the complexes in solution. The crystallization, morphology, and crystalline structure of dilute solid solutions of tetrahydrofuran-methyl methacrylate diblock copolymer (PTHF-b-PMMA) in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and PTHF have been studied with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray, and optical microscopy. This study provides a new insight into the crystallization behavior of block copolymers. For the dilute PTHF-b-PMMA/PEO system containing only 2 to 7 wt % of PTHF content, crystallization of the PTHF micellar core was detected both on cooling and on heating. Compared the crystallization of the PTHF in the dilute solutions with that in the pure copolymer, it was found that the crystallizability of the PTHF micellar core in the solution is much greater than that of the dispersed PTHF microdomain in the pure copolymer. The stronger crystallizability in the solution was presumably due to a softened PMMA corona formed in the solution of the copolymer with PEG. However, the "soft" micelles formed in the solution (meaning that the glass transition temperatures (T-g) of the micelle is lower than the T-m of the matrix phase) showed almost no effects on the spherulitic morphology of the PEO component, compared with that of the pure PEO sample. In contrast, significant effects of the micelles with a "hard" PMMA core (meaning that the T-g of the core is higher than the T-m of the PTHF homopolymer) on the nucleation, crystalline structure, and spherulitic morphology were observed for the dilute PTHF-b-PMMA/PTHF system. Electrochemical behavior of the transfer of H+ across polypyrrole membrane (PPM) was studied. The transfer process was quasi-reversible and mainly diffusion-controlled. PPM electropolymerized in water solution has better reversibility than that in CH3CN solution for the transfer of H+. The transfer process of H+ across the two kinds of PPM indicated that the PPM electrochemically polymerized was of asymmetry.

Thirteen extracting solutions of rare-earth metallofullerenes containing La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb respectively have been investigated by means of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-night, mass spectrometry. The influences of the positive-ion/negative-ion mode, laser intensity, matrix and mass discrimination to the analytical results are studied, based on which the optimal analytical conditions have been determined. The results show that the extracting solutions contain large quantities of rare-earth metallofullerenes brs;des empty fullerenes, On the basis of comparing their relative intensities, the different structure stabilities and solubilities of metallofullerenes with different rare-earth metals encapsulated into the fullerene cages, as well as some possible reasons to those differences, are discussed.
