The phase transition and transition kinetics of a liquid crystalline copoly(amide-imide) (PAI37), which was synthesized from 70 mol% pyromellitic dianhydride, 30 mol% terephthaloyl chloride, and 1,3-bis[4-(4'-aminophenoxy)cumyl]benzene, was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized light microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and rheology. PAI37 exhibits a glass transition temperature at 182 degreesC followed by multiple phase transitions. The crystalline phase starts to melt at similar to 220 degreesC and forms smectic C (S-C) phase. The Sc phase transforms into smectic A (S-A) phase when the temperature is above 237 degreesC. The S-C to S-A transition spans a broad temperature range in which the S-A phase vanishes and forms isotropic melt. The WARD fiber pattern of PAI37 pulled from the anisotropic melt revealed an anomalous chain orientation, which was characterized by its layer normal perpendicular to the fiber direction. The transition kinetics for the mesophase and crystalline phase formation was also studied.

Recent research carried out at the Chinese Institute of Applied Chemistry has contributed significantly to the understanding of the radiation chemistry of polymers. High energy radiation has been successfully used to cross-link fluoropolymers and polyimides. Here chain flexibility has been shown to play an important role, and T-type structures were found to exist in the cross-linked fluoropolymers. A modified Charlesby-Pinner equation, based upon the importance of chain flexibility, was developed to account for the sol-radiation dose relationship in systems of this type. An XPS method has been developed to measure the cross-linking yields in aromatic polymers and fluoropolymers, based upon the dose dependence of the aromatic shake-up peaks and the F/C ratios, respectively. Methods for radiation cross-linking degrading polymers in polymer blends have also been developed, as have methods for improving the radiation resistance of polymers through radiation cross-linking.

Novel optically active aromatic poly(amide-imide)s (PAIs) were prepared from newly synthesized 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxybenzamido)-1,1'-binaphyl dianhydride ((+/-)-, (S)-, and (R)-BNDADA). PAIs based on dianhydride monomers with different ee % were investigated with respect to their structures and chiroptical properties. These polymers were highly soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, pyridine, etc., and showed high glas s transition temperatures of 287-290 degrees C and 5% weight loss temperatures of 450-465 degrees C in nitrogen. Optically active PAIs exhibited high specific rotations, excellent optical stabilities, and a dependence of optical activities on temperature. Investigations on chiroptical properties indicated that chiral conformation was possessed by optically active PAIs. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A series of copolyimides were prepared from 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3-phenylenediamines (3MPDA), 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxyl dianhydride (BTDA), and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA). Modification of the copolyimides by ultraviolet irradiation were carried out. Gas permeabilities of H-2, O-2, and N-2 through the copolyimides and photochemically crosslinked copolyimides were measured at temperatures from 30 to 90 degrees C. The relationships between gas permeabilities and temperature are in agreement with the Arrhenius equation. The structure of photochemically crosslinked copolyimides were characterized by Fourier transform infrared and gel measurement methods. Linear relationships between both log P and E-p and the volume fraction of PMDA-3MPDA exist. Photochemically crosslinking modification result in a decrease in gas permeability and an increase in E-p and alpha(H-2/N-2) for all the copolyimides. For H-2/N-2 separation, photochemically crosslinked copolyimides are of higher gas permeabilities and permselectivities simultaneously than normal polyimides. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

In order to develop photosensitive polyimides (PSPIs) imaged in alkaline aqueous solution, a photosensitive diamine and relevant polymer containing conjugated double bonds in the main chain have been synthesized. The photosensitive characteristics and thermal stability of the polymers were investigated. These polymers possess good thermal stability and sensitivity to UV irradiation, and could be used to form a PSPI resist using alkaline aqueous solution as developer. The UV-visible absorption and fluorescence spectra of a soluble polyimide, YS-30, in several organic solvents were measured over a wide range of concentration. The experimental results show that there exist both intramolecular and intermolecular electron donor acceptor interactions for YS-30 molecules. The fluorescence behavior of YS-30 in N,N-dimethylacetamide and in chloroform solutions is similar in general, except that its ground-state intermolecular charge transfer emission is more obvious in N,N-dimethylacetamide solution. This difference is attributed to the greater extent of disruption of the chain packing by solvent or/and the more efficient radiationless energy dissipation process from the excited state complexes to chloroform. The intensity ratio of intermolecular charge transfer emission to intramolecular charge transfer emission is used to characterize the state of aggregation of YS-30 molecules in solutions. The plot of this ratio versus concentration indicates the existence of two critical concentrations. It is also found from the same plot that the decrease of coil size is very pronounced during the initial stage of shrinkage.

Physical properties of thin films of soluble and insoluble aromatic polyimides were compared by d.s.c., u.v.-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy, and prism coupler technique. D.s.c. results showed that the thermal properties of insoluble polyimides are superior to those of soluble ones, owing to the specific molecular interactions of insoluble polyimides, revealed by fluorescence spectroscopy. However, the specific molecular interactions sacrifice the transparency in their thin films, shown by u.v.-visible transmission spectra. Negative birefringence of thin films, not only for soluble polimides but also for polyamic acids of insoluble polyimides, was confirmed by prism coupler, while thin films of insoluble polyimides thermally imidized lack high levels of negative birefringence. It is regarded that thin films of insoluble polyimides thermally imidized are likely to be isotropic because of molecular relaxation above their glass transition temperatures (T-g) in the course of thermal imidization, according to Flory's principle. On the contrary, thin films of insoluble poyimide chemically imidized keep the same levels of negative birefringence as those of the relevant polyamic acid thin films. Judging from the opposite cases, it is recognized that molecular relaxation above T-g weakens the optical anisotropy of polyimide thin films. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

X-ray crystal structures of 2,2',3,3'-and 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (2,2',3,3'- and 3,3',4,4'-BPDA) were determined. The dianhydride isomers have different symmetry caused by difference in two anhydride group positions and the dihedral angles between the two phenyl rings are 62.9 degrees for 2,2',3,3',-BPDA and 0 degrees for 3,3',4,4'-BPDA respectively. The polyimides from 2,2',3,3'-BPDA exhibit enhanced solubility, higher thermal stability, and higher glass transition temperature (T-g) compared with those from 3,3',4,4'-BPDA.

Novel poly(amide imide)s (PAI) containing alkyl-substituted cyclohexylidene moieties were synthesized by conventional polycondensation of trimellitic anhydride chloride with novel aromatic diamines followed by chemical imidization using acetic anhydride and pyridine. The inherent viscosities of the resulting PAIs are relatively high and range from 71 to 112 mt g(-1). The prepared PAIs show excellent thermal stability and good solubility. The glass transition temperatures (T-g) measured by DSC are observed in the range of 312-342 degrees C. Furthermore, all the polymers are readily soluble in less hygroscopic organic solvents like cyclohexanone, gamma-butyrolactone as well as aprotic polar solvents.

Miscibility and crystallization behavior of solution-blended poly(ether ether ketone)/polyimide (PEEK/PI) blends were investigated by using DSC, optical microscopy and SAXS methods. Two kinds of PIs, YS-30 and PEI-E, which consist of the same diamine but different dianhydrides, were used in this work. The experimental results show that blends of PEEK/YS-30 are miscible over the entire composition range, as all the blends of different compositions exhibit a single glass transition temperature. The crystallization of PEEK was hindered by YS-30 in PEEK/YS-30 blends, of which the dominant morphology is interlamellar. On the other hand, blends of PEEK/PEI-E are immiscible, and the effect of PEI-E on the crystallization behavior of PEEK is weak. The crystallinity of PEEK in the isothermally crystallized PEEK/YS-30 blend specimens decreases with the increase in PI content. But the crystallinity of PEEK in the annealed samples almost keeps unchanged and reaches its maximum value, which is more than 50%. The spherulitic texture of the blends depends on both the blend composition and the molecular structure of the PIs used. The more PI added, the more imperfect the crystalline structure of PEEK. Para-para linked aromatic poly(amic ester) precursors of rodlike polyimide (PI) BPDA-PDA and polyetherimide (PEI) HQDPA-ODA were synthesized. The para-para linked poly(amic ester)s were employed in this work to obtain, in theory, full-imidized polyimides. The two precursors were mixed by dissolving them in N, N'-dimethyl acetamide and subsequently coagulating in methanol. After thermal imidization, the miscibility behaviour of the resulting composites has been studied by means of dynamic mechanical analysis (d.m.a.) and differential scanning calorimetry (d.s.c.). The composites show a single glass transition temperature (T-g) at both d.m.a. and d.s.c. in which the T-g increases with increasing PI content. These Tg values are reproducible in repeated heating cycles, suggesting the true miscibility of the blends. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The aggregation slate of polyimide in solution and in the solid state were studied using the NMR and fluorescence techniques. The experiment results show that the decay of spin-spin relaxation of polyimides with concentration can be described as a single exponential, biexponential, triexponential, biexponential profile. Meanwhile, the intensities of fluorencence spectra increase rapidly with the concentration, and some peaks have a red-shift. Based upon these experiment results, it can be concluded that polyimide in solution is very flexible, and there are several critical concentrations at which polyimide has distinctly different aggregation states. The existence of intermolecular charge transfer interaction between polyimide chains has been proved, and the interaction has a profound effect on the glass transition temperature, T-g, and the dynamic mechanical modulus of polyimide. Gas transport properties of home- and copolyimides prepared from 3,3',4,4'- and 2,2',3,3'-thiaphthalic dianhydride (p-TDPA and m-TDPA, respectively) with 4,4-oxydianiline (ODA) were investigated. The fractional free volume of m-TDPA-ODA is larger than that of p-TDPA-ODA, and the chain segmental mobility of the former is lower than that of the latter. The permeability coefficients of m-TDPA-ODA to H-2, CO2, and O-2 are more increased by 48, 69 and 75%, at 30 degrees C and 10 atm, respectively, than those of p-TDPA-ODA; but the permselectivities of m-TDPA-ODA for H-2, CO2, and O-2 toward N-2 are more decreased by 33, 77, and 26%, respectively, than those of p-TDPA-ODA. The permeability coefficients and the diffusion coefficients of the copolyimides can be described by the following equations: log P = Phi(p) log P-p + Phi(m), log P-m and log D-a = D-a = Phi(p) log(D-alpha)(p) + Phi(m) log(D-a)(m), respectively. The variation of the permselectivity is controlled predominantly by diffusivity selectivity. These observations are interpreted in terms of variations in the fractional free volume of polyimides. The polycrystalline powder of para- and meta-dimethyl ester of pyromellitic acid (PMDE) have been prepared by fractional crystallization, and their crystal structures have been determined by Wide-Angle X-ray Diffraction (WAXD). Both p-PMDE and m-PMDE was found to be orthorhombic crystal system, and their unit cell parameters a = 0.840 nm, b = 0.707 nm, c = 1.136 nm and a = 1.032 nm; b = 0.835 nm, c = 0.714 nm, respectively. Space group all belongs to P-mmm. p-PMDE has two molecules per unit cell with crystal density 1.388 g . cm(-3), while m-PMDE has two molecules per unit cell with crystal density 1.522 g . cm(-3). Indices of crystal diffraction peaks are also detailed in the present work. The difference in crystal structures between p-PMDE and m-PMDE has thus been used to explain the curing behavior of isomerically pyromellitic dianhydride-based poly(amic ester)s.
