The alpha decay half-lives of the recently produced isotopes of the 112, 114, 116 and 118 nuclei and decay products have been calculated in the quasi-molecular shape path using the experimental Q(alpha) value and a Generalized Liquid Drop Model including the proximity effects between nucleons in the neck or the gap between the nascent fragments. Reasonable estimates are obtained for the observed alpha decay half-lives. The results are compared with calculations using the Density-Dependent M3Y effective interaction and the Viola-Seaborg-Sobiczewski formulae. Generalized Liquid Drop Model predictions are provided for the alpha decay half-lives of other superheavy nuclei using the Finite Range Droplet Model Q(alpha) and compared with the values derived from the VSS formulae.

The alpha-decay half-lives of recently synthesized superheavy nuclei (SHN) are investigated by employing a unified fission model (UFM) where a new method to calculate the assault frequency of alpha emission is used. The excellent agreement with the experimental data indicates the UFM is a useful tool to investigate these alpha decays. It is found that the alpha-decay half-lives become more and more insensitive to the Q(alpha) values as the atomic number increases on the whole, which is favorable for us to predict the half-lives of SHN. In addition, a formula is proposed to compute the Q(alpha) values for the nuclei with Z >= 92 and N >= 140 with a good accuracy, according to which the long-lived SHN should be neutron rich. Several weeks ago, two isotopes of a new element with atomic number Z = 117 were synthesized and their alpha-decay chains have been observed. The Q(alpha) formula is found to work well for these nuclei, confirming its predictive power. The experimental half-lives are well reproduced by employing the UFM with the experimental Q(alpha) values. This fact that the experimental half-lives are compatible with experimental Q(alpha) values supports the synthesis of a new element 117 and the experimental measurements to a certain extent.

To evaluate biological action of microorganism exposed to charged particles during the long distance space exploration. Induction of inactivation and mutation in a red yeast strain Rhodotorula glutinis AY 91015 by carbon beams of different LET values (14.9-120 0 keV mu m(-1)) was investigated It was found that survival curves were exponential, and mutation curves were linear for all LET values The dependence of inactivation cross section on LET approached saturation near 120 0 keV mu m(-1) The imitation cross section saturated when LET was higher than 582 keV mu m(-1) Meanwhile, the highest RBEI for inactivation located at 120 0 key mu m(-1) and the highest RBEm for mutation was at 58.2 key mu m(-1) The experiments imply that the most efficient mutagenic part of the depth dose profile of carbon ion is at the plateau region with intermediate LET value in which energy deposited is high enough to Induce mutagenic lesions but too low to induce over kill effect in the yeast cells (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

A new numerical emulation algorithm was established to calculate retention parameters in RP-HPLC with several retention times under different linear or nonlinear binary gradient elution conditions and further predict the retention time under any other binary gradient conditions. A program was written according to this algorithm and nine solutes were used to test the program. The prediction results were excellent. The maximum relative error of predicted retention time was less than 0.45%. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Density functional calculations have been employed to investigate the locating and binding of lanthanum cation, i.e., La(OH)(2)(+), on HZSM-5 zeolite. Through geometry optimization, it was determined that lanthanum ions are favorably accommodated in the two 6-T rings of the straight channels (Clusters 1 and 2, see Sec. III A for details). Cluster 1 was found to exist in prior to Cluster 2 due to the preference of Al substitution in the T11 site (Cluster 1) rather than in the T8 site (Cluster 2). Geometry-optimization of Cluster 1 containing another two lanthanide ions Nd3+ and Yb3+ was also carried out and it was found that a monotonic decrease in Ln-O bond length will take place as the atomic number increases, conforming well to the rule of lanthanide contraction. Some of the optimized parameters are comparable to the corresponding experimental values in Y zeolite, which confirms that the optimized configurations are acceptable. The average frequencies of hydroxyls attached to La3+ or Yb3+ in Cluster 1 fall at 3609.16 and 3579.76 cm(-1), respectively, with the gap of these two frequencies close to that in the sodalite cage of Y zeolite. Compared to H-form zeolite, the charges on both Al and O atoms in Ln-ZSM-5 zeolite show an obvious increase, which will undoubtedly lead to a stronger mutual interaction and hence enhance the stability of the [AlO4](-) anion. Moreover, the Ln(OH)(2)(+) seem to have thickened the zeolite framework, which can effectively retard the process of dealumination. Through the evaluation of the possibility for dimer formation, it turned out that when the exchange degree arrived to approximately 0.28, lanthanum monomers began to aggregate into dimers, and were completely converted into dimers when the exchange degree approached 0.60. beta-NaYF4 microcrystals with a variety of morphologies, such as microrod, hexagonal microprism, and octadecahedron, have been synthesized via a facile hydrothermal route. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and photoluminescence (PL) spectra were used to characterize the samples. The intrinsic structural feature of beta-NaYF4 seeds and two important external factors, namely, the pH values in the initial reaction solution and fluoride sources, are responsible for shape determination of beta-NaYF4 microcrystals. It is found that the organic additive trisodium citrate (Cit(3-)) as a shape modifier has the dynamic effect by adjusting the growth rate of different facets under different experimental conditions, resulting in the formation of the anisotropic geometries of various beta-NaYF4 microcrystals. The possible formation mechanisms for products with various architectures have been presented. A systematic study on the photoluminescence of Tb3+-doped beta-NaYF4 samples with rod, prism, and octadecahedral shapes has shown that the optical properties of these phosphors are strongly dependent on their morphologies and sizes.

We demonstrate the pH-induced assembly of 2-mercaptosuccinic acid-functionalized silver nanoparticles (MSA-Ag NPs) in the absence of hard or soft template. Two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) networks of silver NPs were achieved by tuning pH of the medium. The assembly process was monitored using atomic forces microscopy. The key factor affects the formation of network of silver NPs may be intermolecular hydrogen bonding between two carboxylic acid groups of MSA on two adjacent silver NPs.

In the framework of lattice fluid model, the Gibbs energy and equation of state are derived by introducing the energy (E-s) stored during flow for polymer blends under shear. From the calculation of the spinodal of poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) and polystyrene (PS) mixtures, we have found the influence of E., an equation of state in pure component is inappreciable, but it is appreciable in the mixture. However, the effect of E, on phase separation behavior is extremely striking. In the calculation of spinodal for the PVME/PS system, a thin, long and banana miscibility gap generated by shear is seen beside the miscibility gap with lower critical solution temperature. Meanwhile, a binodal coalescence of upper and lower miscibility gaps is occurred. The three points of the three-phase equilibrium are forecasted. The shear rate dependence of cloud point temperature at a certain composition is discussed. The calculated results are acceptable compared with the experiment values obtained by Higgins et at. However, the maximum positive shift and the minimum negative shift of cloud point temperature guessed by Higgins are not obtained, Furthermore, the combining effects of pressure and shear on spinodal shift are predicted.
