Electrochemical polymerized polyaniline(PAn) film electrode was used to investigate the electrocatalytic effect of PAn on the electrochemical redox reaction of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMcT), PAn film electrode was electrochemically treated or immersed in DMcT solution before it was scanned in 1.0 mol/L HCl electrolyte. The cyclic voltammograms of PAn film electrode in 1.0 mol/L HCl solution changed with the above treatment, implying the electrocatalytic effect of PAn on the redox reaction of DMcT, The formation of electron-donor-acceptor adducts through the interaction between thiol or disulfide groups of DMcT and amine or imine groups of PAn during the treatment was probably the reason of the catalysis, The electrochemical properties of the adduct were different from those of PAn and DMcT, The adduct possessed a higher electrochemical activity and a better electrochemical reversibility than DMcT or PAn used alone.

Antibody was covalently immobilized by amine coupling method to gold surfaces modified with a self-assembled monolayer of thioctic acid. The electrochemical measurements of cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy showed that the hexacyanoferrate redox reactions on the gold surface were blocked due to the procedures of self-assembly of thioctic acid and antibody immobilization. The binding of a specific antigen to antibody recognition layer could be detected by measurements of the impedance change. A new amplification strategy was introduced for improving the sensitivity of impedance measurements using biotin labeled protein- streptavidin network complex. This amplification strategy is based on the construction of a molecular complex between streptavidin and biotin labeled protein. This complex can be formed in a cross-linking network of molecules so that the amplification of response signal will be realized due to the big molecular size of complex. The results show that this amplification strategy causes dramatic improvement of the detection sensitivity of hIgG and has good correlation for detection of hIgG in the range of 2-10 mug/ml. In this paper, blends of Nylon 6,6 with the liquid crystal polymer Vectra A950 are considered; specifically we focused our attention on Nylon 6,6 modifications by interchange reactions that can occur in the melt, as a function of mixing conditions and blend compositions. Two matrix samples have been used, characterised by a slightly different relative amount of amine and carboxylic end groups, being the latter predominant in both cases. The dried polymers Nylon 6,6/Vectra, combined in weight ratios between 95/5 and 50/50, were subjected to reactive blending with different methods (single-screw extruder, Brabender, pyrex reactor). Pure Nylon samples have been also investigated as reference materials. The soluble Nylon 6,6-rich fraction of each blend was separated from the insoluble Vectra-rich one and used for molecular and spectroscopic characterisations. Thermal and morphological analyses, as well as testing of tensile properties, were carried out on the blends. Evidences of the occurrence of interchange reactions are given and the most probable ones are suggested. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A method was developed for the determination of total mercury in biological samples. The effects of aqueous ammonia, ethylenediamine and triethanolamine on Hg signal intensity by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry has been evaluated and the possible mechanisms discussed. It has been proved that the signal intensity of Hg significantly increases with adding, in the presence of small amounts of aqueous ammonia, ethylenediamine or triethanolamine. The normalized intensity (the signal intensity ratio with amine and without amine) of Hg increases as the concentration of aqueous ammonia, ethylenediamine or triethanolamine increases, but the degree of enhancement of aqueous ammonia was smaller than that of ethylenediamine and triethanolamine. The normalized intensity of Hg with aqueous ammonia, ethylenediamine and triethanolamine decreases as the nebulizer flow rate increases, but decreasing degree of aqueous ammonia was smaller than that of ethylenediamine and triethanolamine. The higher the RF powers the higher the normalized intensity of Hg at the same nebulizer flow rate. The addition of aqueous ammonia, ethylenediamine and triethanolamine into analytical solutions significantly improved the transport efficiency of Hg. The detection limit of Hg is improved about ten times by the addition of ethylenediamine or triethanolamine under the optimum experimental parameters. The method has been used to determine mercury in biological standard reference materials (SRM). The analytical results are very close to the certified values and the determined values for similar samples.

The protonation process of two DTPA bis(amide) derivatives, DTPA-BDMA and DTPA-BDEA, was studied by using H-1 NMR titration and MOPAC calculation. Their protonation process was proposed in the order of the central amine, the terminal amines, the central carboxyl, the terminal carboxyl, the other terminal carboxyl and central amine. During the protonation of the terminal amine, there existed a large fraction of proton transfer from the central amine to the other terminal amine.

Aryl polyester dendrimers and dendrons have been prepared by using 'branched monomer strategies', in which the surface and the focal point of the multi-branched monomer have been protected with two different kinds of protective group. The protective group for the focal point was stable during deprotection of the surface. Different wedges could be attached to the multi-branched monomers to form large dendrons whilst active dendrons could be attached to different cores to form various dendrimers with different wedges and different cores.

The fragmentations of three bifunctional phenylether compounds including 2-(2, 6-dichloro)phenoxyl propionitrile, N-hydroxyl-4-butoxyl phenylacetyl amine(bufexamc) and 2-(1-methylethoxyl) phenol methylcarbamate (Propoxur) under electron impact ionization were reported, Metastable ion(MI) and collision-induced dissociation(CID) at a low energy have been used to study the fragmentation pathways from molecular ions. Apart from the simple bond cleavages, and the unimolecular dissociations via ion/neutral complex intermediate as a competitive mechanism were demonstrated, Moreover, the intramolecular hydrogen transfer and double hydrogen transfers in the fragmentations of these compounds were discussed in detail.

Phenolphthalein poly(ether ether sulphone) (PES-C) was found to be miscible with uncured bisphenol-A-type epoxy resin, i.e. diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA), as shown by the existence of a single glass transition temperature within the whole composition range. Miscibility between PES-C and DGEBA is considered to be due mainly to the entropy contribution. However, dynamic mechanical analysis (d.m.a.) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies revealed that PES-C exhibits different miscibility with four cured epoxy resins (ER). The overall compatibility and the resulting morphology of the cured blends are dependent on the choice of cure agent. For the blends cured with amines (4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) and 4,4'-diaminodiphenylsulphone (DDS)), no phase separation occurs as indicated by either d.m.a. or SEM. However, for the blends cured with anhydrides (maleic anhydride (MA) and phthalic anhydride (PA)), both d.m.a. and SEM clearly show evidence of phase separation. SEM study shows that the two phases interact well in the MA-cured blend while the interface between the phases in the PA-cured blend is poorly bonded. The differences in the overall compatibility and the resulting morphology between the amine-cured and anhydride-cured systems have been discussed from the points of view of both thermodynamics and kinetics.

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) was found to be miscible with uncured epoxy resin, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA), as shown by the existence of a single glass transition temperature (T(g)) in each blend. However, PEO with M(n) = 20 000 was judged to be immiscible with the highly amine-crosslinked epoxy resin (ER). The miscibility and morphology of the ER/PEO blends was remarkably affected by crosslinking. It was observed that phase separation in the ER/PEO blends occurred as the crosslinking progressed. This is considered to be due to the dramatic change in the chemical and physical nature of ER during the crosslinking.

The proton-translocating NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (complex I) has been purified from Aquifex aeolicus, a hyperthermophilic eubacterium of known genome sequence. The purified detergent solubilized enzyme is highly active above 50 degreesC. The specific activity for electron transfer from NADH to decylubiquinone is 29 U/mg at 80 degreesC. The A. aeolicus complex I is completely sensitive to rotenone and 2-n-decyl-quinazoline-4-yl-amine. SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis shows that it may contain up to 14 subunits. N-terminal amino acid sequencing of the bands indicates the presence of a stable subcomplex, which is composed of subunits E, F, and G. The isolated complex is highly stable and active in a temperature range from 50 to 90 degreesC, with a half-life of about 10 h at 80 degreesC. The activity shows a linear Arrhenius plot at 50-85 degreesC with an activation energy at 31.92 J/mol K. Single particle electron microscopy shows that the A. aeolicus complex I has the typical L-shape. However, visual inspection of averaged images reveals many more details in the external arm of the complex than has been observed for complex I from other sources. In addition, the angle (90degrees) between the cytoplasmic peripheral arm and the membrane intrinsic arm of the complex appears to be invariant.

An impedimetric immunosensor was fabricated for rapid and non-labeled detection of sulfate-reducing bacteria, Desulforibrio caledoiensis (SRB) by immobilizing lectin-Concanavalin A using an agglutination assay. The immobilization of lectin was conducted using amine coupling on the surface of a gold (Au) electrode assembled with 11-Mercaptounclecanoic acid. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to verify the stepwise assembly of the sensor system. The work conditions of the impedimetric immunosensor, such as pH of the buffer solutions and the incubation time of lectin, were optimized. Faradic impedance spectra for charge transfer for the redox probe Fe(CN)(6)(3-/4-) were measured to determine SRB concentrations. The diameter of the Nyquist diagram that is equal to the charge-transfer resistance (RI) increased with increasing SRB concentration. A linear relationship between R-ct and SRB concentration was obtained in SRB concentration range of 1.8 to 1.8 x 10(7) cfu/ml. The variation of the SRB population during the growth process was also monitored using the impedimetric immunosensor. This approach has great potential for simple, low-cost. and time-saving monitoring of microbial populations. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A pre-column derivatization method for the sensitive determination of aliphatic amines using the labeling reagent 1,2-benzo-3,4-dihydrocarbazole-9-ethyl chloroformate (BCEOC) followed by HPLC with fluorescence detection and APCI/NIS identification in positive-ion mode has been developed. The chromophore of 2-(9-carbazole)-ethyl chloroformate (CEOC) reagent was replaced by the 1,2-benzo-3,4-dihydrocarbazole functional group, which resulted in a sensitive fluorescence derivatizing reagent, BCEOC, that could easily and quickly label amines. Derivatives were stable enough to be efficiently analyzed by HPLC and showed an intense protonated molecular ion corresponding m/z [M + H](+) with APCI/MS in positive-ion mode. The collision induced dissociation of the protonated molecular ion formed characteristic fragment ions at m/z 264.1, m/z 246.0 and m/z 218.1, corresponding to the cleavages of CH2CH2O-CO, CH2CH2-OCO, and N-CH2CH2O bonds. Studies on derivatization conditions demonstrated that excellent derivatization yields close to 100% were observed with a 3 to 4-fold molar reagent excess in acetonitrile solvent, in the presence of borate buffer (pH 9.0) at 40 degrees C for 10 min. In addition, the detection responses for BCEOC derivatives were compared with those obtained with CEOC and FMOC as labeling reagents. The ratios I-BCEOC/I-CEOC and I-BCEOC/I-FMOC were, respectively, 1.40-2.76 and 1.36-2.92 for fluorescence responses (here, I was the relative fluorescence intensity). Separation of the amine derivatives had been optimized on an Eclipse XDB-C-8 column. Detection limits calculated from an 0.10 pmol injection, at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3, were 18.65-38.82 fmol (injection volume 10 mu L for fluorescence detection. The relative standard deviations for intraday determination (n = 6) of standard amine derivatives (50 pmol) were 0.0063-0.037% for retention times and 3.36-6.93% for peak areas. The mean intra-and inter-assay precision for all amines were <5.4% and 5.8%, respectively. The recoveries of amines ranged from 96 to 113%. Excellent linear responses were observed with correlation coefficients of >0.9994. The established method provided a simple and highly sensitive technique for the quantitative analysis of trace amounts of aliphatic amines from biological and natural environmental samples.
