Raman spectroscopy was used to study the molecular structure of a series of selected rare earth (RE) silicate crystals including Y2SiO5 (YSO), LU2SiO5 (LSO), (Lu0.5Y0.5)(2)SiO5 (LYSO) and their ytterbium-doped samples. Raman spectra show resolved bands below 500 cm(-1) region assigned to the modes of SiO4 and oxygen vibrations. Multiple bands indicate the nonequivalence of the RE-O bonds and the lifting of the degeneracy of the RE ion vibration. Low intensity bands below 500 cm(-1) are an indication of impurities. The (SiO4)(4-) tetrahedra are characterized by bands near 200 cm(-1) which show a separation of the components of nu(4) and nu(2), in the 500-700 cm(-1) region which are attributed to the distorting bending vibration and in the 880-1000 cm(-1) region which are attributed to the symmetric and antisymmetric stretching vibrational modes. The majority of the bands in the 300-610 cm(-1) region of Re2SiO5 were found to arise from vibrations involving both Si and RE ions, indicating that there is considerable mixing of Si displacements with Si-O bending modes and RE-0 stretching modes. The Raman spectra of RE silicate crystals were analyzed in terms of the molecular structure of the crystals, which enabled separation of the bands attributed to distinct vibrational units. Investigating the activities of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in the process of addiction is valuable for understanding the neural mechanism underlying the impairments of the PFC after drug abuse. However, limited data are obtained from primate animals and few studies analyze Electroencephalogram (EEG) in the gamma band, which plays an important role in cognitive functions. In addition, it is yet unclear whether drug abuse affects the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC) - the two most important subregions of the PFC - in similar ways or not. The aim of this study is to address these issues. We recorded EEG in the OFC and DLPFC in three rhesus monkeys. All animals received a course of saline (NaCl 0.9%, 2 ml) injection (5 days) followed by 10 days of morphine injection (every 12 h), and then a further series of saline injection (7 days). A main finding in the present study was that morphine decreased EEG power in all frequency bands in a short period after injection in both the OFC and DLPFC in monkeys. And gamma power decreased not just in short period after morphine injection but lasted to 12 h after injection. Moreover, we found that although the changes in EEG activities in the OFC and DLPFC at 30-35 min after injection were similar, the DLPFC was more sensitive to the effect of morphine than the OFC. ZnO thin films were prepared on Si (1 11) substrates at various temperatures from 250 to 700 degrees C using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique in order to investigate the structural and optical properties of the films. The structural and morphological properties of the films were investigated by XRD and SEM measurements, respectively. The quality of the films was improved with the increase of the temperature. By XRD patterns the FWHMs of the (0 0 2) peaks of the ZnO films became narrower when the temperatures were above 500 degrees C. The FWHMs of the peaks of (0 0 2) of the films were as narrow as about 0. 19 degrees when films were grown at 650 and 700 degrees C. This indicates the superior crystallinity of the films. The optical properties of the films were studied by photoluminescence spectra using a 325 nm He-Cd laser. The two strongest UV peaks were found at 377.9 nm from ZnO films grown at 650 and 700 degrees C. This result is consistent with that of the XRD investigation. Broad bands in visible region from 450 to 550 nm were also observed. Our works suggest that UV emissions have close relations with not only the crystallinity but also the stoichiometry of the ZnO films. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two strong photoluminescence (PL) bands in the spectral range of 550-900 nm have been observed at room temperature from a series of a-SiOx:H films fabricated by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique. One is composed of a main band in the red-light region and a shoulder; the other is located at about 850 nm, only found after 1170 degrees C annealing in N-2 atmosphere. In conjunction with infrared (IR) and micro-Raman spectra, it is thought that the two PL bands are associated with a-Si clusters in the SiOx network and nanocrystalline silicon in SiO2, respectively.

Microcrystalline silicon films were deposited by very high frequency (VHF) plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) with different hydrogen dilution. The microstructure of these films was investigated using Raman spectroscopy and infrared absorption (IR) spectra. The crystalline, amorphous, and grain boundary volume fractions X-c, X-a and X-gb were estimated from Raman measurements. An interface structure factor (R-if) is proposed to characterize the grain boundary volume fractions in IR spectroscopy. The density of states (DOS) of the microcrystalline crystalline silicon films were studied by phase-shift analysis of modulated photocurrent (MPC) and photoconductivity spectroscopy. It was observed that DOS increases with increasing grain boundary volume fractions, while the values of electron mobility-lifetime product mu T-e(e) disease.

Mg-doped GaN layers prepared by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition were annealed at temperatures between 550 and 950℃. Room temperature (RT) Hall and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy measurements were performed on the as-grown and annealed samples. After annealing at 850℃, a high hole concentration of 8 × 10~(17) cm~(-3) and a resistivity of 0. 8lΩ·cm are obtained. Two dominant defect-related PL emission bands in GaN.. Mg are investigated; the blue band is centered at 2. 8eV (BL) and the ultraviolet emission band is around 3.27eV (UVL). The relative intensity of BL to UVL increases after annealing at 550℃, but decreases when theannealing temperature is raised from 650 to 850℃, and finally increases sharply when the annealing temperature is raised to 950C. The hole concentration increases with increased Mg doping, and decreases for higher Mg doping concentrations. These results indicate that the difficulties in achieving high hole concentration of 10~(18)cm~(-3) appear to be related not only to hydrogen passivation, but also to self-compensation.

In the present study, we investigated the mechanisms of apoptosis resistance and the roles of the phosphorylation of BRCA1, p21, the Bax/Bcl-2 protein ratio and cell cycle arrest in IR-induced apoptosis in MCF-7 cells. X-irradiation, in particular at low dose (1 Gy), but not carbon ion irradiation, had a significant antiproliferative effect on the growth of MCF-7 cells. 1 Gy X-irradiation resulted in G1 and G2 phase arrest, but 4 Gy induced a significant G1 block. In contrast, carbon ion irradiation resulted in a significant accumulation in the G2 phase. Concomitant with the phosphorylation of H2AX induced by DNA damage, carbon ion irradiation resulted in an approximately 1.9–2.8-fold increase in the phosphorylation of BRCA1 on serine residue 1524, significantly greater than that detected for X-irradiation. Carbon ion irradiation caused a dramatic increase in p21 expression and drastic decrease in Bax expression compared with X-irradiation. The data implicated that phosphorylation of BRCA1 on serine residue 1524 might,at least partially, induce p21 expression but repress Bax expression. Together, our results suggested that the phosphorylation of BRCA1 at Ser-1524 might contribute to the G2 phase arrest and might be an upstream signal involved in preventing apoptosis signal via upregulation of p21 and downregulation of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio.

We describe a new molecular approach to analyzing the genetic diversity of complex microbial populations. This technique is based on the separation of polymerase chain reaction-amplified fragments of genes coding for 16S rRNA, all the same length, by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). DGGE analysis of different microbial communities demonstrated the presence of up to 10 distinguishable bands in the separation pattern, which were most likely derived from as many different species constituting these populations, and thereby generated a DGGE profile of the populations. We showed that it is possible to identify constituents which represent only 1% of the total population. With an oligonucleotide probe specific for the V3 region of 16S rRNA of sulfate-reducing bacteria, particular DNA fragments from some of the microbial populations could be identified by hybridization analysis. Analysis of the genomic DNA from a bacterial biofilm grown under aerobic conditions suggests that sulfate-reducing bacteria, despite their anaerobicity, were present in this environment. The results we obtained demonstrate that this technique will contribute to our understanding of the genetic diversity of uncharacterized microbial populations.

The nanocrystalline Sry(2)O(4):Eu3+ was prepared by a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)+glycine-assist combustion method. The results of x-ray diffraction indicate that the resulting Sry(2)O(4):Eu3+ nanocrystals have much broader and less intense peaks compared with those in bulk material. The charge-transfer bands in Sry(2)O(4):Eu3+ nanocrystals shift to higher energies in contrast to those in bulk material. The spectral results revealed that in bulk SrY2O4: Eu3+ the Eu3+ ions occupied three nonequivalent sites, with one at the Sr site: one at the Y(1) site and another at the Y(2) site, while in nanocrystalline SrY2O4: Eu3+, the Eu3+ ions occupied only two nonequivalent sites; one at the Y(1) site and the other at the Y(2) site. Finally, by theoretical calculation and analysis, the analyzed results are in reasonable agreement with our experimental results.

A series of novel cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes bearing 2,4-diphenylquinoline ligands with fluorinated substituent were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, NMR and mass spectroscopy. The cyclic voltammetry, absorption, emission and electroluminescent properties of these complexes were systematically investigated. Electrochemical studies showed that the oxidation of the fluorinated complexes occurred at more positive potentials (in the range 0.57-0.69 V) than the unfluorinated complex 1 (0.42 V). In view of the energy level, the lowering of the LUMO by fluorination is significantly less than that of the HOMO. The weak and low energies absorption bands in the range of 300-600 nm are well resolved, likely associated with MLCT and (3)pi-pi* transitions. These complexes show strong orange red emission both in the solution and solid state. The emission maxima of the fluorinated complexes showed blue shift by 9, 24 and 15 nm for 2, 3 and 4, respectively, with respect to the unfluorinated analogous 1. Multilayered organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were fabricated by using the complexes as dopant materials. Significantly higher performance and lower turn-on voltage were achieved using the fluorinated complexes as the emitter than that using the unfluorinated counterpart 1 under the same doping level.

The fully relaxed single-bond torsional potentials and orientation-related rotational potentials of 2,2'-bithiophene (BT) under the interaction of an external electric field (EF) constructed by point charges have been evaluated with semi-empirical AMI and PM3 calculations. The torsional potentials are sensitive to both EF strength and direction. While the EF is parallel to the molecular long axis, the torsional barrier around C-x-C-x' bond obviously rises with increasing the EF strength, whereas the relative energies of syn and anti minima show a slight change. The interaction between the EF and the induced dipole moment has been proposed to elucidate this observation. On the other hand, the relative energy difference between the syn and anti minima shows an obvious change, while the EF is perpendicular to the molecular long axis. This feature has been ascribed to the interaction between the EF and the permanent dipole moment of BT. Furthermore, conformational and orientational analyses in two dimensions have been carried out by changing the torsional and rotational angles in the different EF. The conformation and orientation of a gas-phase BT in the EF are governed by both the above factors.

The banded textures in the films of a thermotropic liquid crystalline poly(aryl ether ketone) containing a lateral chloro group have been studied by means of transmission electron microscopy(TEM), electron diffraction(ED) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The crystallization-induced Landed texture without external shear can be formed when the thin films were annealed at the temperature range(320-330 degrees C) of the liquid crystalline state from the melt, The results show that the banded regions have high orientation of single crystal based on the orthorhombic packing and the growing direction of the Lands is along the b axis of the crystals, This kind of single crystal-like bands is due to the different orientation of the packing molecular chains, The molecular chains of the dark bands in the bright field electron micrograph are perpendicular to the film plane, while the ones of the bright Lands are tilt along the b axis with the tilt angle upto +/-20 degrees.

We present the synthesis of the AgLnMo(2)O(8) oxides with Ln = La-Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb and Y. These compounds represent a scheelite-related structure type characterized by MoO42- tetrahedrons. The IR spectra show three transmittance bands in the region of 1000-400 cm(-1), which correspond respectively to the nu(1), nu(2), and nu(3) modes of the tetrahedral MoO42- groups. All of AgLnMo(2)O(8) are insulator materials at room temperature. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibilities of AgLnMo(2)O(8) (Ln = Ce-Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb) show Curie-Weiss Law behaviors with two anomalies occurring at low temperature, whereas AgLaMo2O8 and AgYMo2O8 both exhibit diamagnetic properties as expected. The magnetic moments at room temperature fit very well with those corresponding to rare earth sesquioxides. This suggests that rare earth ions exist in +3 oxidation state in all AgLnMo(2)O(8) compounds.

An integrated CaF2 crystal optically transparent infrared (ir) thin-layer cell was designed and constructed without using any soluble adhesive materials. It is suitable for both aqueous and nonaqueous systems, and can be used not only in ir but also in uv-vis studies. Excellent electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical responses were obtained in evaluating this cell by cyclic voltammetry and steady-state potential step measurements for both ir and uv-vis spectrolectrochemistry with ferri/ferrocyanide in aqueous solution, and with ferrocene/ferrocenium in organic solvent as the testing species, respectively. The newly designed ir cell was applied to investigate the electrochemical reduction process of bilirubin in situ, which provided direct information for identifying the structure of the reduction product and proposing the reaction mechanism.

The infrared spectra of the bilayer system dodecylammonium chloride has been studied as a function of temperature. Unusual splitting of some vibrational modes helps us to characterize the structure of different solid states. This study provided the evidence for the occurrence of an order-disorder phase transition whose onset occurs at 327 K and its completion ends at 339 K. In the low temperature phase below 327 K, the virgin crystals form a well-ordered phase with all-transhydrocarbon chains. In the intermediate state between 327 and 339 K, the data demonstrate the introduction of intramolecular as well as intermolecular disorder. The coexistence of solid and liquid-crystal-like states is shown by the persistence of factor group splittings together with the existence of defect bands in the wide intermediate temperature range. In the high temperature phase over 339 K the crystals convert to a liquid-crystal-like system with extensive motional and conformational disorder, but still show characteristics in their infrared spectra which indicate the presence of ordered segments in the hexagonal solid phase.
