The theoretical method to design negative refractive index metamaterials by single negative permittivity metamaterials is presented. By designing the electric and magnetic response metamaterials separately, the complexity of the design work can be simplified a lot. For the magnetic response metamaterials, the metallic post structure is adopted. Varying the height of the post, the response wavelength can be adjusted linearly. For electric metamaterials, wire-mesh structure is adopted. The effective material parameters, including refractive index, impedance, permittivity and permeability are given. Such a structure has negative refractive index during a broad frequency band and easy to design.

Intense near infrared emission was observed from Al3+ and Yb3+ ions co-implanted SiO2 film on silicon. It was found that the addition of Al3+ ions could remarkably improve the photoluminescence efficiency of Yb3+-implanted SiO2 film. No excitation power saturation was observed and trivial temperature quenching factor of 2 was achieved.

Charge trapping in the fluorinated SIMOX buried oxides before and after ionizing radiation has been investigated by means of C-V characteristics. Radiation-induced positive charge trapping which results in negative shift of C-V curves can be restrained by implanting fluorine ions into the SIMOX buried oxides. Pre-radiation charge trapping is suppressed in the fluorinated buried oxides. The fluorine dose and post-implantation anneal time play a very important role in the control of charge trapping.

It was theoretically predicted that when a beam of light travels through a thin slab of optically denser medium in the air, the emerging beam from the slab will suffer a lateral displacement that is different from the prediction of geometrical optics, that is, the Snell's law of refraction and can be zero and negative as well as positive. These phenomena have been directly observed in microwave experiments in which large angles of incidence are chosen for the purpose of obtaining negative lateral displacements. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. It is found that when a light beam travels through a slab of optically denser dielectric medium in air, the lateral shift of the transmitted beam can be negative. This is a novel phenomenon that is reversed in comparison with the geometrical optic prediction according to Snell's law of refraction. A Gaussian-shaped beam is analyzed in the paraxial approximation, and a comparison with numerical simulations is made. Finally, an explanation for the negativity of the lateral shift is suggested, in terms of the interaction of boundary effects of the slab's two interfaces with air.

It is theoretically shown that the simultaneously large positive and negative lateral displacements will appear when the resonant condition is satisfied for a TE-polarized light beam reflected from the total internal reflection configuration with a weakly absorbing dielectric film. Appearance of the enhanced negative lateral displacement is relative to the incidence angle, absorption of the thin Elm and its thickness. If we select an appropriate weakly absorbing dielectric film and its thickness, the simultaneously enhanced positive and negative lateral displacements will appear at different resonant angles. These phenomena may lead to convenient measurements and interesting applications in optical devices.

We investigate the controllable negative and positive group delay in transmission through a single quantum well at the finite longitudinal magnetic fields. It is shown that the magneto-coupling effect between the longitudinal motion component and the transverse Landau orbits plays an important role in the group delay. The group delay depends not only on the width of potential well and the incident energy, but also on the magnetic-field strengthen and the Landau quantum number. The results show that the group delay can be changed from positive to negative by the modulation of the magnetic field. These interesting phenomena may lead to the tunable quantum mechanical delay line. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We investigate the large negative lateral displacements of TE polarized light beams reflected from or transmitted through an active slab surrounded by transparent medium. The large negative displacements can be achieved when the incidence angle of the beam is less than but close to the critical angle for total reflection. It is also shown that both the reflectivity and transmissivity of the beam that correspond to the large negative displacements can be enhanced by active medium. A novel Nd3+-doped lead fluorosilicate glass (NPS glass) is prepared by a two-step melting process. Based on the absorption spectrum a Judd-Ofelt theory analysis is made. The emission line width of NPS glass is 44.2nm. The fluorescence decay lifetime of the 4F3/2 level is 586±20μsec, and the stimulated emission cross-section is 0.87×10-20cm2 at 1056nm. A laser oscillation is occurred at 1062nm when pumped by 808nm Diode Laser. The slope efficiency is 23.7% with a 415mJ threshold. It is supposed that NPS glass is a good candidate for using in ultra-short pulse generation and amplification by the broad emission bandwidth and long fluorescence lifetime.
