Well-aligned TiO2/Ti nanotube arrays were electrochemically formed in a HF solution for different anodization times. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images reveal that anodization time had a great influence on the morphology of TiO2/Ti nanotube arrays. The composition of resulting nanotubes was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Field emission properties of the prepared samples with different morphologies were investigated by the Fowler-Nordheim (F-N) theory. The results indicate that the morphology can affect field emission behaviors. TiO2/Ti nanotube arrays with clear, uniform, and short nanotubes display moderate field emission properties, and have the better turn-on field of 4.6 V/mu m and good field emission stability. Nanocrystalline Tm3+-doped La2O3 phosphors were prepared through a Pechini-type sol-gel process. X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, photoluminescence, and cathodoluminescence spectra were utilized to characterize the synthesized phosphors. Under the excitation of UV light (234 nm) and low-voltage electron beams (1-3 kV), the Tm3+-doped La2O3 phosphors show the characteristic emissions of Tm3+(D-1(2), (1)G(4)-F-3(4), H-3(6) transitions).

In this study, we investigated the electroluminescence (EL) mechanisms and processes of hole block material in the multilayer devices with Eu(TTA)(3)phen (TTA = thenoyltrifluoroacetone, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) doped CBP (4,4'-N,N'-dicarbazolebiphenyl) as the light-emitting layer (EML). First, the hole block ability of 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (BCP) was experimentally confirmed by comparing the EL spectra. With increasing hole injection, BCP emission emerges and increases gradually due to the increasing hole penetration from EML into the hole block layer (HBL).

LaGaO3:Sm3+, LaGaO3:Tb3+ and LaGaO3: Sm3+, Tb3+ phosphors were prepared through a Pechini-type sol-gel process. X-Ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, photoluminescence (PL), and cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy were utilized to characterize the synthesized phosphors. Under excitation with ultraviolet light (250-254 nm), the LaGaO3: Sm3+, LaGaO3: Tb3+ and LaGaO3: Sm3+, Tb3+ phosphors mainly show the characteristic broadband emission (from 300 to 600 nm with a maximum around 430 nm) of the LaGaO3 host lattice, accompanied by the weak emission of Sm3+ ((4)G(5/2) -> H-6(5/2), H-6(7/2), H-6(9/2) transitions) and/or Tb3+ (D-5(3,4) -> F-7(6,5,4,3) transitions). However, under excitation by low-voltage electron beams (1-3 kV), the LaGaO3: Sm3+, LaGaO3: Tb3+ and LaGaO3: Sm3+, Tb3+ phosphors exhibit exclusively the characteristic emissions of Sm3+ and/or Tb3+ with yellow (Sm3+), blue (Tb3+, with low concentrations) and white (Sm3+ + Tb3+) colors, respectively.

Many efforts have been devoted to exploring novel luminescent materials that do not contain expensive or toxic elements, or do not need mercury vapor plasma as the excitation source. In this paper, amorphous Al2O3 powder samples were prepared via the Pechini-type sol-gel process. The resulting samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), photoluminescence (PL) excitation and emission spectra, kinetic decay, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR).

Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) characteristics of a red fluorescent dye 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-t-butyl-6(1,1,7,7-tetramethyljulolidyl-9-enyl)-4H-pyran (DCJTB) were significantly improved by assistant Forster energy transfer. The coguest-host system was composed of an electron transport organic molecule tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq(3)) as host and a green fluorescent dye (10-(2-benzothiazolyl)-1,1,7,7-tetramethyl-2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H,5H,11H-[1]benzopyrano[6,7,8-ij]quinolizin-11-one) (C545T) as assistant dopant codoped with the guest red dye DCJTB as emitter in a matrix of polystyrene (PS).

A novel strategy for obtaining white electroluminescence (EL) is based on the mechanism of electron trapping on host. Phosphonate-functionalized polyfluorene is chosen as host owing to its strong electron affinity. Electrons are confined mostly by host pendants in the EL process, which suppresses charge transfer from host to dopant. White EL with CIE coordinates of (0.34,0.35) is achieved.

Starburst-substituted hexaazatriphenylene Compounds have been designed and synthesized by introducing various peripheral aryl substituents to the central heterocyclic core. The effects of various substituent groups on the photophysical and electrochemical properties of the substituted hexaazatriphenylene have been investigated. Significant red-shifts of the absorption peak (from 413 nm to 530 nm) and emission peak (from 432 nm to 700 nm) were observed when the electron-donating ability of the aryl substituents was increased, corresponding to a decrease in the band gap from 2.90 eV to 2.05 eV. Introducing bulky substituents with weak electron-donating ability enhances the fluorescence quantum yield from 23% to 87%. In contrast, incorporating aryl substituents with strong electron-donating ability decreases the fluorescence quantum yield.

Blue, yellow and white light emissive LaOCl:Tm3+, LaOCl:Dy3+ and LaOCl: Tm3+, Dy3+ nanocrystalline phosphors were synthesized through the Pechini-type sol-gel process. X-Ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), photoluminescence (PL) and cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra were used to characterize the samples. Under UV radiation (229 nm) and low-voltage electron beam (0.5-5 kV) excitation, the Tm3+-doped LaOCl phosphor shows a very strong blue emission corresponding to the characteristic transitions of Tm3+ (D-1(2), (1)G(4) -> F-3(4), H-3(6)) with the strongest emission at 458 nm. The cathodoluminescent color of LaOCl:Tm3+ is blue to the naked eye with CIE coordinates of x = 0.1492, y = 0.0684. This phosphor has better CIE coordinates and higher emission intensity than the commercial product Y2SiO5:Ce3+.

Nanocrystalline LaOCl:Tb3+/Sm3+ phosphors were synthesized by a Pechini-type sol-gel process. Under UV and electron-beam excitation, LaOCl:Tb3+/Sm3+ show the characteristic emission of Tb3+ (D-5(3,4) -> F-7(6), ... (2)) and Sm3+ ((4)G(5/2) -> H-6(5/2),(7/2),(9/2)), respectively. In particular, the cathodoluminescence (CL) color of LaOCl:Tb3+ can be tuned from blue to green by changing Tb3+-doped concentration, and their CL intensities (brightness) are higher than those of commercial products Y2SiO5:Ce3+ and ZnO:Zn, respectively. White CL can be realized by codoping with Tb3+ and Sm3+ in a single-phase LaOCl host. The obtained white light is very close to the standard white light. These phosphors are promising for application in field-emission displays.

LaInO3: Sm3+, LaInO3: Pr3+ and LaInO3: Tb3+ phosphors were prepared through a Pechini-type sol-gel process. X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, photoluminescence, and cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra were utilized to characterize the synthesized phosphors. XRD results reveal that the pure LaInO3 phase can also be obtained at 700 degrees C. FE-SEM images indicate that the LaInO3: Sm3+, LaInO3: Pr3+ and LaInO3: Tb3+ phosphors are composed of aggregated spherical particles with sizes around 80-120 nm. Under the excitation of ultraviolet light and low voltage electron beams (1-5 kV), the LaInO3: Sm3+, LaInO3: Pr3+ and LaInO3: Tb3+ phosphors show the characteristic emissions of Sm3+ ((4)G(5/2)-H-6(5/2,7/2,9/2) transitions, yellow), Pr3+ (P-3(0)-H-3(4), P-3(1)-H-3(5), D-1(2)-H-3(4) and P-3(0)-F-3(2) transitions, blue-green) and Tb3+ (D-5(4)-F-7(6.5,4.3) transitions, green) respectively. The corresponding luminescence mechanisms are discussed. These phosphors have potential applications in field emission displays.

It has been found that cesium hydroxide (CsOH) doped tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq(3)) as an interfacial modification layer on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) is an effective cathode structure in inverted bottom-emission organic light-emitting diodes (IBOLEDs). The efficiency and high temperature stability of IBOLEDs with CsOH:Alq(3) interfacial layer are greatly improved with respect to the IBOLEDs with the case of Cs2CO3:Alq(3). Herein, we have studied the origin of the improvement in efficiency and high temperature stability via the modification role of CsOH:Alq(3) interfacial layer on ITO cathode in IBOLEDs by various characterization methods, including atomic force microscopy (AFM), ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS), X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and capacitance versus voltage (C-V). The results clearly demonstrate that the CsOH:Alq(3) interfacial modification layer on ITO cathode not only enhances the stability of the cathode interface and electron-transporting layer above it. which are in favor of the improvement in device stability, but also reduces the electron injection barrier and increases the carrier density for current conduction, leading to higher efficiency.

By introducing an effective electron injection layer (EIL) material, i.e., lead monoxide (PbO), combined with the optical design in device structure, a high efficiency inverted top-emitting organic light-emitting diode (ITOLED) with saturated and quite stable colors for different viewing angles is demonstrated. The green ITOLED based on 10-(2-benzothiazolyl)-1, 1, 7, 7-tetramethyl-2, 3, 6, 7-tetrahydro-1H, 5H, 11H-[1] benzopyrano [6, 7, 8-ij] quinolizin-11-one exhibits a maximum current efficiency of 33.8 cd/A and a maximum power efficiency of 16.6 lm/W, accompanied by a nearly Lambertian distribution as well as hardly detectable color variation in the 140 forward viewing cone. A detailed analysis on the role mechanism of PbO in electron injection demonstrates that the insertion of the PbO EIL significantly reduces operational voltage, thus greatly improving the device efficiency.

By fusing an electron-deficient ring system with the phenyl ring of a 2-phenylpyridine (ppy)-type ligand, a new and synthetically versatile strategy for the phosphorescence color tuning of cyclometalated iridium(III) and platinum(II) metallophosphors has been established. Two robust red electrophosphors with enhanced electron-injection/electron-transporting features were prepared by using an electron-trapping fluoren-9-one chromophore in the ligand design. The thermal, photophysical, redox and electrophosphorescent properties of these complexes are reported. These exciting results can be attributed to a switch of the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) character of the transition from the pyridyl groups in the traditional Ir-III or Pt-II ppy-type complexes to the electron-deficient ring core, and the spectral assignments corroborate well with the electrochemical data as well as the timedependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. The electron-withdrawing character of the fused ring results in much more stable MLCT states, inducing a substantial red-shift of the triplet emission energy from yellow to red for the Ir-III complex and even green to red for the PtII counterpart.
