The organic-inorganic hybrid materials vanadium oxide [(VO2)-O-IV(phen)(2)](.)6H(2)O (1) and [(2,2'-bipy)(2)(VO2)-O-V](H2BO3)(.)3H(2)O (2) have been conventional and hydrothermal synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analyses, respectively. Although the method and the ligand had been used in the syntheses of the compounds (1) and (2) are different, they almost possess similar structure. They all exhibit the distorted octahedral [VO2N4] unit with organonitrogen donors of the phen and 2,2'-bipy ligands, respectively, which coordinated directly to the vanadium oxide framework. And they are both non-mixed-valence complexes. But the compound (1) is isolated, and the compound (2) consists of a cation of [(2,2'-bipy)(2)(VO2)-O-V](+) and an anion of (H2BO3)(-). So the valence of vanadium of (1) and (2) are tetravalence and pentavalence, respectively. Meanwhile it is noteworthy that pi-pi stacking interaction between adjacent phen and 2,2'-bipy groups in compounds I and 2 also play a significant role in stabilization of the structure. Thus, the structure Of [(VO2)-O-IV(phen)(2)](.)6H(2)O and [(2,2'-bipy)(2)(VO2)-O-V](H2BO3)(.)3H(2)O are both further extended into interesting three-dimensional supramolecular.

The oxamido-bridged heterobinuclear copper(II)-nickel(II) complex, [Cu(oxbe)Ni(phen)(2)]ClO4.3H(2)O (1) and homotrinuclear nickel(11) complex {[Ni(oxbe)](2)Ni(H2O)(2)}.2.5DMF (2) have been synthesized and characterized by means of elemental analysis, IR, EPR. and electronic spectra and magnetic susceptibility, where H(3)oxbe is dissymmetrical ligand N-benzoato-N'-(2-aminoethyl)ox-amido, phen = 1.10-phenanthroline, DMF = dimethylformamide. Complex I has an extended oxamido-bridged structure consisting of planar copper(II) and octahedral nickel(II) ions. The chi(M) and mu(eff) versus T plots of 1 is typical of an antiferromagnetically coupled Cu(II)-Ni(II,) pair with a spin-doublet ground state, and magnetic analysis leads to J = -57.1 cm(-1). The molecular structure of 2 is centrosymmetrical, with one octahedral nickel atom lying at an inversion center and two terminal Ni(II) atoms in approximately square planar environment. Through the hydrogen bonds and pi- pi stacking interactions, a 2D supramolecular structure is formed.

A new compound, [Ni(en)(3)](2)[Ni(en)(2)(H2O)(2)][As6V15O42] . 4H(2)O, was first prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TGA-DSC, ESR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Crystal data: monoclinic, space group C-c, a = 1. 523 6(3) nm, b = 2. 051 8(4) nm, c = 2.395 9(5) nm, beta = 97. 41(3)degrees, V = 7.427(3) nm(3), Z = 4, R = 0. 057 0, wR(2) = 0.135 7. The polyanion consists of six AsO3 pyramids and fifteen VO5 pyramids. Counterions are complex ions with octahedral structure, which consist of NH2CH2CH2NH2 and Ni2+.

The branched crystal morphology of linear polyethylene formed at various temperatures from thin films has been studied by atomic-force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron diffraction (ED) pattern and polymer decoration technique. Two types of branched patterns, i.e. dendrite and seaweed patterns, have been visualized. The fractal dimension d(f) = 1.65 of both dendrite and some of seaweed patterns was obtained by using the box-counting method, although most of the seaweed patterns are compact. Selected-area ED patterns indicate that the fold stems tilt about 34.5degrees around the b-axis and polymer decoration patterns show that the chain folding direction and regularity in two (200). regions are quite different from each other. Because of chain tilting, branched crystals show three striking features: 1) the lamella-like branches show two (200) regions with different thickness; 2) the crystals usually bend towards the thin region; 3) the thick region grows faster by developing branches, thus branches usually occur outside the thick region. The branched patterns show a characteristic width w, which gives a linear relationship with the crystallization temperature on a semilogarithmic plot.

Reactions of the Rh hydrido complex [Rh(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(EtOH)(2)]ClO4 (1) With nitrogen ligands such as 2-(4-thiazolyl)benzimidazole (tbz). pyridazine (pdz), imidazole (im) and pyrimidine (pmd) in CH,Cl, afforded Various mononuclear Rh hydrido complexes, [Rh(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(tbz)]CIO4 (2), [Rh(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(pdZ)(2)]ClO(4)(.)2CH(2)Cl(2) (3). [Rh(H)Cl(PPh3)(2)(pdz)(2)](ClO4CH2Cl2)-C-. (4). [Rh(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(im)(2)]ClO(4)(.)2CH(2)Cl(2) (5). [Rh(H)Cl(PPh3)(2)(im)(2)](ClO4CH2Cl2)-C-. (6). [Rh(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(pmd)(2)](ClO4CH2Cl2)-C-. (7) and the Rh non-hydrido complex [RhCl2(pmd)(4)]ClO4 (8). The Rh complexes 2. 3, 5 and 6 were crystallographically characterized. The formation process was monitored by H-1 NMR and UV-Vis spectra. In all the Rh hydrido complexes, the Rh atom is coordinated by two PPh3. ligands in trans-positions and two nitrogen ligands in the cis-positions. The remaining sites Lire occupied by one or two hydride atoms to form a saturated 18-electron framework in a slightly distorted octahedral geometry. For complex 2 an appreciable inter-molecular pi interaction is observed between planes of tbz and PPh3 ligands, while an intra-molecular hydrogen bonding interaction between C-H and Cl atoms is found in complex 6.

Single crystal of butyl branched polyethylene with various molecular weight formed from the melt in the presence of electric field was studied. It was found that electric field influenced morphology and structure of the butyl branched polyethylene single crystals formed. The lateral habits of the single crystals were circular shape, which was different from truncated lozenge or lenticular shape single crystals formed from the melt in the absence of electric field. The stems in the single crystals formed in the presence Of electric field were perpendicular to the basal plane of the single crystals, which was different from chain tilting in single crystals formed from the melt in the absence of electric field. The electron diffraction patterns showed that the structure of the circular single crystals was a quasi-hexagonal with looser chain packing. This looser chain packing was favorable to thickening growth of single crystals through chain sliding diffusion. The thickness of the single crystals was much larger and depended on molecular weight. It indicated that the single crystal in the presence of electric field should be an extended chain type Single crystal.

The anion of MeO2CCH2CH2SnCl4 - was obtained by decomposing the yellow solution of MeO2CCH2CH2SnCl3.(2-OHC6H4CH=NC6H5) by standing for 15 days, which is the product of 3-methoxy-carbonylethyltin trichlorides with Schiff base (2-OHC6H4CH=NC6H5). The title compound was characterized by elemental analysis, IR. H-1 NMR,C-13 NMR and X-ray diffraction analysis. The crystal of the title compound belongs to orthorhombic system, space group P2cn, a=7.852(2), b=12.236(1),c=16.952(4)Adegrees, V=1628.7 Angstrom(3), Z=4, D-c=1.79g/cm(3) F(000)=860, mu=22.2cm(-1), R=0.0449, Rw=0.0382. The title compound exists as a discrete molecule, and the tin atom attains a distorted octahedral geometry via the coordination of intramolecular carbonyl oxygen and chloride ion. The coordination number of tin atom is 6.

A new molybdenum-citrato cluster containing [Mo2O2(mu-S)(2)(C6H5O7)(C6H4O7)](5-) anion was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-Vis spectra, XPS and X-ray diffraction. The parameters of the crystal structure of the compound are monoclinic, space group P2(1)/c, a = 2. 376 6(5) nm, b = 1. 327 4(3) nm, c = 2. 247 1(5) nm, beta = 118. 21 degrees, V = 6. 247(2) nm(3), Z = 8, D-c = 2. 128 g/cm(3), F(000) = 3 984, mu = 1 694 cm(-1), R = 0. 083 1 and R-2,R-w = 0. 154 9. The anion is binuclear molybdenum-citrato complex with mu(2)-S bridge. Each molybdenum atom pocesesses a distorted octahedral struture, which is coordinated with a terminal oxygen, two sulfur atoms, three oxygen atoms of hydroxyl, alpha-carboxylate, beta-carboxylate from citrate.

Three new compounds, [ZnL1.5(H2O)(SO4)]. 6H(2)O 1, [ZnL1.5(H2O)(2)][NO3](2). 2H(2)O 2 and [CdL1.5(H2O)(2)(SO4)]. 4H(2)O 3 were obtained from self-assembly of the corresponding metal salts with 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole) (L). In both 1 and 2 zinc ion is five-co-ordinated, showing a less-common trigonal bipyramidal co-ordination polyhedron, while cadmium ion of 3 is six-co-ordinated with a common octahedral arrangement. The sulfate ions of 1 and 3 are co-ordinated, however the nitrate ions of 2 are not. Each of the three compounds is composed of a (6, 3) network with the hexagonal smallest circuit containing six metal ions and six L; each L is co-ordinated to two metal ions, acting as a bridging ligand. In 1 the 2-D sheet of (6, 3) networks is interpenetrated in an inclined mode by symmetry related, identical sheets to give an interlocked 3-D structure, while the (6, 3) networks of both 2 and 3 stack in a parallel fashion to construct frameworks having channels.

The lateral habits of low molecular weight short chain branched polyethylene single crystals from the melt were studied. Three crystallization temperatures (102, 104 and 106 degrees C) were selected for single crystal growth. It was found that the lateral habits of single crystals were asymmetric at all the crystallization temperatures selected. The electron diffraction patterns and tilting series experiments evidenced that there existed chain tilting in all the lamellae. It was the chain tilting that lead to the asymmetry of the growth rate and of lateral habits of the single crystals about the b-axis. The lateral habits substantially changed from the growth at 102 degrees C where the truncated lozenge single crystals formed with straight (110) faces to the growth at 104 degrees C where the lenticular single crystals appeared. This change occurred at 20 degrees C lower than that in a low molecular weight linear polyethylene with the same molecular weight. Furthermore, kinetics theory analysis evidenced that the change of lateral habits from truncated lozenge to lenticular shape resulted from the transition of growth regime. The results were the same as that of high molecular weight linear polyethylene but different to that of low molecular weight linear polyethylene. The twisting growth of a branched polyethylene single crystal formed from the melt was observed directly by means of transmission electron and atomic force miscroscopy. The surface stress asymmetry arising from the asymmetry of the surface-fold structure and, chain tilting resulted in the twisting growth of the single crystals. The handedness of the twisting lamellae was consistent With the chain-tilting direction. When multilayer lamellae piled up in a thicker film, the lamellar twist would be inevitably causing screw dislocations.

Metallocene-catalyzed short chain branched polyethylene single crystals, formed from the melt at a higher crystallization temperature of 114 degreesC, were obtained. Highly elongated lamellae were formed, which are different from truncated lozenge or lenticular shaped single crystals formed at a lower crystallization temperature. It was found that there existed a definite line in the lamellae along the longitudinal growth direction and two regions were separated by the definite line. The lateral habits of both the regions were asymmetrical about the b-axis due to the chain tilting, which was the same as that at a lower crystallization temperature. Generally, the highly elongated lamellae were not straight, but curved towards the opposite direction with chain tilting direction due to a series of edge dislocation within a lamella. The inner side of a lamella was serrated and the outer side was smooth due to the lamellar curvature. The thickness of both regions of a lamella was different, the broader region was thicker than the narrower region, which was different from the uniform thickness of the lamellae formed at a lower crystallization temperature. The different thicknesses within a lamella were considered as the result of the initial thickness difference and the impact of isothermal thickening. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. The nanoscale and microscale fibrillar crystals of nylon 10 10 were obtained by atomizing the very dilute formic acid solution. The length-diameter ratio of these fibrillar crystals increases as the concentration of the atomizing solution increases. Electron diffraction (ED) analysis showed that the hydrogen-bonded sheet in these solution-grown fibrillar crystals was imperfect and had a lower order. Both electron diffraction and characteristic morphology show that melt-crystallized fibrillar crystals always possess perfect packing order and stable structure. A rather perfect ED pattern of the triclinic form of nylon 10 10 along the [001] zone was obtained by tilting the specimen 41 degrees along the elongated direction of the crystal. Fibrillar crystals from bulk have a great tendency to aggregate with parallel packing to form crystal clusters, which look like shish kebabs in morphology. Thirty - two title complexes (ROCOCHRCH2SnCl3)-C-1 . (2 - HOC6H4CH = NC6H4 - X) (R = Me, Et, n - Bu; R-1 = H, Me; X = H,4' - Cl, 3' - Pr, 3' - OH, 3', 4' - Cl-2, 4' - OMe) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis,UV - vis, IR, H-1 NMR. The crystal structure of n - BuOCOCH2CH2SnCl3 . (2 - HOC6H4CH - NC6H4OMe - 4') were determined by the X - ray diffraction analysis, The crystal belongs to monoclinic system, with a = 1.4661 (3)nm, b = 0.9307 (2)nm, c = 1.7888 (4)nm, beta = 94.04 (3)degrees, V = 2.4348nm(3), D-c = 1.581mg/m(3), Z = 4, F(000) = 1160, mu = 1.405mm(-1), R = 0.0354, R-w = 0,0486, space group: P2(1)/c. The complexes exist as a discrete monomer. The tin atom has a distorted octahedral geometry due to intramolecular coordination of the carbonyl oxygen and the phenolic oxygen of the Schiff base ligands, The coordination number of tin atom is 6.

An interesting interface structure between diamond film and silicon substrate has been observed. That is, according to the deformation of the diamond film crystal sturcture, a strictly 3:2 matching of the two lattices across the interface is obtained. This result clearly indicates that misfit dislocations at the interface and "epitaxial tilting" are not the only two ways to overcome the 1.5% residual misfit.
