The exciton states in isolated and semi-isolated quantum wires are studied. It is found that the image charges have a large effect on the effective Coulomb potential in wires. For the isolated wire the effective potential approaches the Coulomb potential in vacuum at large z distance. For the semi-isolated wire the effective potential is intermediate between the Coulomb potential in vacuum and the screened Coulomb potential at large distance. The exciton binding energy in the isolated wire is about ten times larger than that in the quantum well, and that in the semi-isolated wire is also intermediate between those in the isolated wire and in the quantum well. When the lateral width increases the binding energy decreases further, and approaches that in the quantum well. The real valence-band structure is taken into account, the exciton wave functions of the ground state in the zero-order approximation are given, and the reduced mass is calculated. The effect of the coupling between the ground and excited states are considered by the degenerate perturbation method, and it is found the coupling effect is small compared to the binding energy.

We present an efficient method to generate a ultrashort attosecond (as) pulse when a model He+ ion is exposed to the combination of an intense few-cycle chirped laser pulse and its 27th harmonics. By solving the time-dependent Schroumldinger equation, we found that high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from He+ ion is enhanced by seven orders of magnitude due to the presence of the harmonic pulse. After optimizing the chirp of the fundamental pulse, we show that the cut-off energy of the generated harmonics is extended effectively to I-p+25.5U(p). As a result, an isolated 26-as pulse with a bandwidth of 170.5 eV can be obtained directly from the supercontinuum around the cut-off of HHG. To better understand the physical origin of HHG enhancement and attosecond pulse emission, we perform semiclassical simulations and analyze the time-frequency characteristics of attosecond pulse.

Isolated transition metal ions/oxides in molecular sieves and on surfaces are a class of active sites for selective oxidation of hydrocarbons. Identifying the active sites and their coordination structure is vital to understanding their essential role played in catalysis and designing and synthesizing more active and selective catalysts. The isolated transition metal ions in the framework of molecular sieves (e.g., TS-1, Fe-ZSM-5, and V-MCM-41) or on the surface of oxides (e.g., MoO3/Al2O3 and TiO2/SiO2) were successfully identified by UV resonance Raman spectroscopy. The charge transfer transitions between the transition metal ions and the oxygen anions are excited by a UV laser and consequently the UV resonance Raman effect greatly enhances the Raman signals of the isolated transition metal ions. The local coordination of these ions in the rigid framework of molecular sieves or in the relatively flexible structure on the surface can also be differentiated by the shifts of the resonance Raman bands. The relative concentration of the isolated transition metal ion/oxides could be estimated by the intensity ratio of Raman bands. This study demonstrates that the UV resonance Raman spectroscopy is a general technique that can be widely applied to the in-situ characterization of catalyst synthesis and catalytic reactions. For the films and powder of polymers containing conductive oligomer are usually obtained from solution, the choice of better solvents for the regular arrangement of oligomers is very important for the higher conductivity. Because of the poor solubility of the oligomers, it is difficult to study the arrangement directly in most common solvents, so, we synthesized a triblock copolymer, mPEG2k-aniline pentamer-mPEG2k, as the model to investigate the arrangement-solvent relationship. For the poor solubility of the AP block in common solvents, the copolymer self-assembled into spheric micelles in toluene and into lamellar crystals in water and THF. The crystallinity (X-c) and crystallization temperature (T-c) values of mPEG blocks in powders prepared from different solvents differed obviously, which may be the effect of different self-assembled structures. From the two-phase model of one-dimensional electron density correlation function of SAXS, the long period of copolymer prepared from THF was presumably equal to the long period of pure mPEG plus the chain length of AP, which demonstrates that the AP blocks arrange regularly in the noncrystalline regions.

A water-soluble crude extract prepared from Ornithogalum caudatum Ait. (OCA) showing a high immunomodulating activitiy was isolated and characterized by virtue of get filtration and column chromatography. The presence of the monosaccharides has been established by the chemical analysis. The quantitative analysis of the alditol acetate derivatives of them showed the ratios of the monosaccharides analyzed by means of GC respectively. The concentrations of protein(280 nm) and carbohydrate (496 nm) were detected respectively. The information of the molecular weight from the pure polysaccharide was obtained by several standard Dextrans from the Sephadex chromatography.

The general and synchronous spectra of phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)) isolated from Chinese agkistrodon blomhoffii Ussurensis snake venom were studied. The chromophores of PLA(2) were mainly contributed by tyrosine and tryptophane residues when the intervals between the excitation wavelength and the emssion waveleagth (Delta lambda) were 20nm and 75nm, respectively. The pH of buffers could change the fluorescence intensities of PLA(2) by changing the charge distribution of its amino acid chain. Ca2+ can not only increase the emission fluorescence intensity of PLA(2) but also improve the reaction rate of PLA(2) with its corresponding substrate DPPC.

C-phycocyanin (CPC) and allophycocyanin (APC) were purified from Spirulina platensis, then the CPC was attached covalently to the APC by reacting their epsilon-amino groups. The excitation energy could be transferred from the CPC to the APC in the CPC-APC conjugate. Intact phycobilisomes (PBS), consisting of CPC, APC, colourless linker polypeptides, and APC B or L-cm, were isolated from S. platensis. Spectroscopic properties of the isolated PBSs kept at 20 degrees C for various times showed that the connection between the APC and the APC B or L-cm was looser than that between the CPC and the APC in the isolated PBSs. The CPC-APC conjugate was more stable than the isolated PBSs, and the linker polypeptides had a minor influence on the excitation energy transfer characteristic between different phycobiliproteins in the PBS.

A new fermentative hydrogen-producing bacterium was isolated from mangrove sludge and identified as Pantoea agglomerans using light microscopic examination, Biolog test and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The isolated bacterium, designated as P. agglomerans BH-18, is a new strain that has never been optimized as a potential hydrogen-producing bacterium. In this study, the culture conditions and the hydrogen-producing ability of P. agglomerans BH-18 were examined. The strain was a salt-tolerant facultative anaerobe with the initial optimum pH value at 8.0-9.0 and temperature at 30 degrees C on cell growth. During fermentation, hydrogen started to evolve when cell growth entered late-exponential phase and was mainly produced in the stationary phase. The strain was able to produce hydrogen over a wide range of initial pH from 5 to 10, with an optimum initial pH of 6. The level of hydrogen production was affected by the initial glucose concentration, and the optimum value was found to be 10 g glucose/l. The maximum hydrogen-producing yield (2246 ml/l) and overall hydrogen production rate (160 ml/l/h) were obtained at an initial glucose concentration of 10 g/l and an initial pH value of 7.2 in marine culture conditions. In particular, the level of hydrogen production was also affected by the salt concentration. Hydrogen production reached a higher level in fresh culture conditions than in marine ones. In marine conditions, hydrogen productivity was 108 ml/l/h at an initial glucose concentration of 20 g/l and pH value of 7.2, whereas, it increased by 27% in fresh conditions. In addition, this strain could produce hydrogen using glucose and many other carbon sources such as fructose, sucrose, sorbitol and so on. As a result, it is possible that P. agglomerans BH-18 is used for biohydrogen production and biological treatment of mariculture wastewater and marine organic waste. Two anthraquinone compounds were isolated from the culture broth of a marine actinomycete isolate M097. The structures were elucidated as Aloesaponarin II and 1,6-dihydroxy-8-hydroxymethyl-anthraquinone by detailed interpretation of their spectra. It is the first time that the latter has ever been reported as a secondary metabolite from a wild-type strain. The results showed that the actinomycete isolate M097 could be a promising material for studying the biosynthetic pathway of polyketides and the production of novel recombinant polyketides.
