Self-organized Al0.3Ga0.7As islands generated on the (100) facet are achieved by liquid phase epitaxy. Three particularly designed experimental conditions-partial oxidation, deficient solute and air quenching-result in defect-free nucleation. Micron-sized frustums and pyramids are observed by a scanning electron microscope. The sharp end of the tip has a radius of curvature less than 50 nm. It is proposed that such Al0.3Ga0.7As islands may be potentially serviceable in microscale and nanoscale fabrication and related spheres. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Illustrated in this paper are two examples of altering planar growth into self-assembled island formation by adapting experimental conditions. Partial oxidation, undersaturated solution and high temperature change Frank-Van der Merwe (FM) growth of Al0.3Ga0.7As in liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) into isolated island deposition. Low growth speed, high temperature and in situ annealing in molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) cause the origination of InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) to happen while the film is still below critical thickness in Stranski-Krastanow (SK) mode. Sample morphologies are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) or atomic force microscopy (AFM). It is suggested that such achievements are of value not only to fundamental researches but also to spheres of device applications as well. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A novel technique of manufacturing Al0.3Ga0.7As pyramids by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) for scanning probe microscopy (SPM) sensors is reported Four meticulously designed conditions-partial oxidation, deficient solute, air quenching and germanium doping result in defect-free homogeneous nucleation and subsequent pyramid formation. Micrometer-sized frustums and pyramids are detected by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The sharp end of the microtip has a radius of curvature smaller than 50 nm. It is believed that such accomplishments would contribute not only to crystal growth theory, but also to miniature fabrication technology.

Chemical-looping reforming (CLR) is a technology that can be used for partial oxidation and steam reforming of hydrocarbon fuels. It involves the use of a metal oxide as an oxygen carrier, which transfers oxygen from combustion air to the fuel. Composite oxygen carriers of cerium oxide added with Fe, Cu, and Mn oxides were prepared by co-precipitation and investigated in a thermogravimetric analyzer and a fixed-bed reactor using methane as fuel and air as oxidizing gas. It was revealed that the addition of transition-metal oxides into cerium oxide can improve the reactivity of the Ce-based oxygen carrier. The three kinds of mixed oxides showed high CO and H-2 selectivity at above 800 degrees C. As for the Ce-Fe-O oxygen carrier, methane was converted to synthesis gas at a H-2/CO molar ratio close to 2:1 at a temperature of 800-900 degrees C; however, the methane thermolysis reaction was found on Ce-Cu-O and Ce-Mn-O oxygen carriers at 850-900 degrees C. Among the three kinds of oxygen carriers, Ce-Fe-O presented the best performance for methane CLR. On Ce-Fe-O oxygen carriers, the CO and H-2 selectivity decreased as the Fe content increased in the carrier particles. An optimal range of the Ce/Fe molar ratio is Ce/Fe > 1 for Ce-Fe-O oxygen carriers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that the microstructure of the Ce-Fe-O oxides was not dramatically changed before and after 20 cyclic reactions. A small amount of Fe3C was found in the reacted Ce-Fe-O oxides by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis.

A prominent methanol-tolerant characteristic of the PtCeOx/C electrocatalyst was found during oxygen reduction reaction process. The carbon-supported platinum modified with cerium oxide (PtCeOx/C) as cathode electrocatalyst for direct methanol fuel cells was prepared via a simple and effective route. The synthesized electrocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the cerium oxide within PtCeOx/C present in an amorphous form on the carbon support surface and the PtCeOx/C possesses almost similar disordered morphological structure and slightly smaller particle size compared with the unmodified Pt/C catalyst.

Organo-functionalized MCM-41 containing non-covalently linked 1,10-phenanthroline (denoted as Phen-MCM-41) was synthesized by template-directed co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane and the modified phenanthroline (denoted as Phen-Si). XRD, FTIR, UV/VIS spectroscopy as well as luminescence spectroscopy were employed to characterize Phen-MCM-41. No disintegration or loss of the Phen-Si during the solvent extraction procedure could be observed. When monitored by the ligand absorption wavelength (272 nm), the undoped MCM-41 produces a broad band emission centered at 450 run, whereas europium (III) doped Phen-MCM-41 displays the emission of the Eu3+, i.e., D-5(0) --> F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) transition lines due to the energy transfer from the ligands to Eu3+ as well as a broad band emission centered at 442 nm.

The electrochemical behavior of a series of undecatungstozincates monosubstituted by first-row transition metals, ZnW11M(H2O)O-39(n-) (M=Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu or Zn), was investigated systematically and comparably in aqueous solutions by electrochemical and in situ UV-visible-near-IR spectroelectrochemical methods. These compounds exhibit not only successive reduction processes of the addenda atoms (W) in a negative potential range, but some of them also involve redox reactions originating from the substituted transition metals (M) such as the reduction of Fe-III and Cu-II at less negative potentials and the oxidation of Mn-II at a more positive potential. Some interesting results and phenomena, especially of the transition metals, were found for the first time. Moreover, possible reaction mechanisms are proposed based on the experimental results.

The possibility of the formation of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films with dimethyldioctadecylammonium (DODA) after the addition of cobalt(II)-substituted Dawson-type tungstodiphosphate anion (briefed as (H2O)(CoP2W17O618-)-P-11) in the subphase has been explored. Marked modifications of the compression isotherms are observed when this anion is dissolved in the subphase, which demonstrates that the polyanions interact with the monolayers. LB films have been readily obtained from this system. The adsorption Fourier transform IR (FT IR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) have been used to investigate the morphological and molecular structure of the deposited film. The FT IR results showed the presence of the polyanion within the LB films, and the shift for its characteristic bands may be related to the presence of positively charged DODA. AFM measurement reveals that the LB films of DODA/(H2O)(CoP2W17O618)-P-II are regularly and uniformly deposited on the substrate. XRD experiments prove that the lamellar structure of the LB films of DODA/(H2O)(CoP2W17O618-)-P-II is well-defined. The LB films of DODA/(H2O)(CoP2W17O618-)-P-II immobilized onto an indium-oxide (ITO) glass, in aqueous solutions of pH 2.0-5.0, show quite facile redox reactions even for multilayers. All the experiments carried out in the present study suggest that the new materials of heteropolyanions can be formed by LB techniques and beneficial physicochemical properties of heteropolyanions can be maintained/enhanced through molecular-level design. Two groups of mixed oxides La2-xThxCuO4+/-lambda (0.0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.4) and La2-xSrxCuO4+/-lambda (0.0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1.0) were prepared. Their crystal structures were studied with XRD and IR spectra, etc. Meanwhile, the average valence of Cu ions and nonstoichiometric oxygen (lambda) was measured through chemical analyses. Catalysis of the abovementioned mixed oxides was investigated in phenol hydroxylation, good results were obtained for some mixed oxides, and found that the catalysis of these mixed oxides have close relation with their defect structure and composition. A radical substitution mechanism was also proposed for this catalytic reaction.

The electrochemical behavior of the title compound (denoted Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)(13-)) in aqueous solution has been studied using cyclic voltammetry, sampled d.c. voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry and bulk electrolysis with coulometry, The stable pH range of Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)(13-) is determined with UV-visible spectra. In the potential range between 0.70 and -0.45 V vs. SCE, the anion in pH 3.8 aqueous solution undergoes one-, one-, two- and two-electron steps of four redox processes attributed to electron addition and removal from the molybdate-oxo framework. The adsorption of the anion on the dropping mercury electrode and a self-inhibition influence of the adsorbed anions on the redox process of those anions dissolved in solution are found. The unusual dependence of the formal potentials on pH is explained with the competition of the protonation and ion-pair formation due to the high negative charge of Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)(13-) and its reduced forms. The electrocatalytic effects of the anion on the bromate are investigated.
