A promising application for biomass is liquid fuel synthesis, such as methanol or dimethyl ether (DME). Previous studies have studied syngas production from biomass-derived char, oil and gas. This study intends to explore the technology of syngas production from direct biomass gasification, which may be more economically viable. The ratio of H-2/CO is an important factor that affects the performance of this process. In this study, the characteristics of biomass gasification gas, such as H-2/CO and tar yield, as well as its potential for liquid fuel synthesis is explored. A fluidized bed gasifier and a downstream fixed bed are employed as the reactors. Two kinds of catalysts: dolomite and nickel based catalyst are applied, and they are used in the fluidized bed and fixed bed, respectively. The gasifying agent used is an air-steam mixture. The main variables studied are temperature and weight hourly space velocity in the fixed bed reactor. Over the ranges of operating conditions examined, the maximum H-2 content reaches 52.47 vol%, while the ratio of H-2/CO varies between 1.87 and 4.45. The results indicate that an appropriate temperature (750 degrees C for the current study) and more catalyst are favorable for getting a higher H-2/CO ratio. Using a simple first order kinetic model for the overall tar removal reaction, the apparent activation energies and pre-exponential factors are obtained for nickel based catalysts. The results indicate that biomass gasification gas has great potential for liquid fuel synthesis after further processing.

Local vibrational modes(LVMs) in tenths of InP samples reveal clearly existence of complexes related to hydrogen. Complexes of vacancy at indium site with one to four hydrogen atom(s) and isolated hydrogen or hydrogen dimers and complexes of hydrogen with various impurities and intrinsic defects are investigated by FTIR. Especially hydrogen related complexes between various transition metals and hydrogen or hydrogen related complexes between hydrogen with point defects. New LVMs related to hydrogen will be reported in this paper. Dynamical formation mechanism of defects in the annealed nominally undoped semiinsulating InP obtained by high pressure, high temperature annealing of ultra purity materials is proposed. Hydrogen can acts as actuator for antistructure defects production. Structural, electronic and vibrational properties of LVMs related to hydrogen as well as their temperature effects are discussed.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production patterns and the influence of oxygen (O-2) concentration were studied based on a well operated composting plant. A real-time, online multi-gas detection system was applied to monitor the concentrations of H2S and O-2 in the pile during composting. The results indicate that H2S was mainly produced during the early stage of composting, especially during the first 40 h. Lack of available O-2 was the main reason for H2S production. Maintaining the O-2 concentration higher than 14% in the pile could reduce H2S production. This study suggests that shortening the interval between aeration or aerating continuously to maintain a high O-2 concentration in the pile was an effective strategy for restraining H2S production in sewage sludge composting. Ferric trisacetylacetonate has been deposited within the zeolite MCM-41 and the product characterized by XRD and IR. In water at pH 7 it catalyzes the oxidation of phenol by H2O2, giving 58% conversion in 1 h at 50 degrees C: products are catechol (66%), hydroquinone (27%) and benzoquinone (7%). Other oxidants and solvents are much less effective. UV-VIS spectra suggest a radical substitution mechanism, and a pollution-free process for phenol hydroxylation is now possible.

Superconductor mixed oxides were often used as catalysts at higher temperature in gas phase oxidations, and considered not suitable for lower temperature reactions in the liquid-solid phase; here the catalysis of YBa2Cu3O7+/-x and Y2BaCuO5+/-x in the phenol hydroxylation at lower temperature with H2O2 as oxygen donor was studied, and found that the superconductor YBa2Cu3O7+/-x, has no catalytic activity for phenol hydroxylation, but Y2BaCuO5+/-x does, even has better catalytic activity and stability than most previously reported ones. With the studies of catalysis of other simple metal oxides and perovskite-like mixed oxides, a radical substitution mechanism is proposed and the experimental facts are explained clearly, and draw a conclusion that the perovskite-like mixed oxides with (AO)(ABO(3)) and (AO)2(ABO(3)) structure have better catalytic activity than the simple perovskite oxides with (ABO(3))(3) structure alone, and (AO) structure unit is the key for the mixed oxides to have the phenol hydroxylation activity. No pollution of this process is very important for its further industrial application.

Steam reforming of ethanol over CuO/CeO2 was studied. Acetaldehyde and hydrogen were mainly produced at 260degreesC. At 380degreesC, acetone was the main product, and 2 mol of hydrogen was produced from 1 mol of ethanol. The formation of hydrogen accompanied by the production of acetone was considered to proceed through the following, consecutive reactions: dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehyde. aldol condensation of the acetaldehyde, and the reaction of the aldol with the lattice oxygen [O(s)] on the catalyst to form a surface intermediate, followed by its dehydrogenation and decarboxylation. The overall reaction was expressed by2C(2)H(5)OH + H2O --> CH3COCH3 + CO2 + 4H(2). Ceria played an important role as an oxygen supplier. The addition of MgO to CuO/CeO2 resulted in the production of hydrogen at lower temperatures by accelerating aldol condensation. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
